"Yeah, me too. But I've been there." Fletcher did look tired. He still half-grinned at her, but he was definitely slowing down. "Don't ditch me because you wanna sit and sulk on your own, Doodler. I've had a hellova year, and even after fifty of 'em. people still like telling me what it is I want."

That was it. Fifty years, that was the most Fletcher had ever mentioned about what he had gone through. He took another swig of his drink, and wiped his mouth with his arm again. "You've got about twenty minutes till it's officially closing time. After that, you can split or whatever. I'll probably be re-stacking the dishwasher long into the night."

He jerked his thumb over his shoulder.

"But seriously. The plastic dishes go first, no matter the detergent. Clearly, Dom's never scrubbed anything by hand if he thinks he can get away with stacking things his way. I'm not kidding. This is serious business."

Fletcher shook his head. "Kids these days, right?"

The vampire slid off the counter, leaving his second bottle there half gone. He took up a broom and started in the far corner, sweeping absently. He was actually doing a decent job, whistling slightly as he went.

Was it that hard for a man who had been through what the Godeaux had, to simply say he wouldn't mind a little company in his own Gethsemane?

The answer?

Fletcher swept the corner booth, cursed, ducked, squinted, and decided he did not want to know what it was making an odd chattering noise. "Ew."

.. yes.

"I'm not going to tell you what you want."

That made sense. How the hell was she supposed to know what the weird vampire wanted, anyway? Fangs? A birthday present?

Cloasse fell silent after her short statement, eyes settled on the counter that Fletcher had now vacated. Imagine something as ordinary as a counter holding so many memories. The first time the two had met, she'd clambered onto the bar top in order to draw on Fletcher's face. The first time she'd gotten well and truly drunk, the fangless wonder had settled her on top of it, and she'd been ever so pleased because it had meant he thought she was pretty.

It probably hadn't, though. He'd most likely been doing it just to keep her happy and not sobbing on him in order to save staining his favourite t-shirt or something equally egotistical and heartless.

"If you're just going to clean up, can I go? There's nothing else to say, I already told you about the uneventful shopping trip."

Surely he'd say she could go now. There couldn't possibly be anything else he could magic up that'd hold much of her interest when she was struggling to hold in her emotions.

If he wanted time to himself, Cloasse was more than happy to provide it. Especially when it meant that she could leave, because she assumed that it would make her feel better...

"Why .. " Fletcher asked this earnestly as he leaned on the broom. " .. Are you acting like you just can't wait to get away from me? Is it something I did? I've been gone a lot this past year, yeah, but that's because .. remember the kid with the spikey hair?" Fletcher made his fingers into a 'claw' and placed them on the crown of his head. "Yeah. Sort of ended up dead, and then suddenly not. So you know, that was time-consuming."

The vampire didn't get it -- he really didn't truly understand it. If this was a product of what the Torment had done to his brain, or if he honestly was lacking that much common sense -- it seemed like Fletcher couldn't put it together that Cloasse still very much was in love with him.

"Maybe reading Vogler's books and getting real close with your dad, talking with him like -- maybe that's it?" Fletcher started sweeping again. There was no measured anger to his tone, he sounded conversational as ever. "You're like, you're not really all that interested in talking with me anymore -- it would be like reading a book that you've already got memorized?"

Bitterness did not suit Fletcher's voice, and his words were mercifully devoid of it. He was full of the apathetic nonchalance, not unlike what he displayed the first time Cloasse came back, after her four year absence.

"I mean, if that's it, that's fine." It honestly would have been fine. Fletcher bore no heartache, not anymore. He couldn't.

"Get over yourself, Fletcher," Cloasse snapped, uncharacteristically exasperated. "It's not you that has a problem for once. Sure, it kinda involves you, but you're not the one who has to deal with it, because you're clearly oblivious to it!"

She took a breath, eyes screwed shut in embarrassed disbelief; she hadn't actually said that, had she?

"I mean... just..."

And now she was stuttering. Joy. What next, tears? Sobbing declarations of love that would leave Fletcher in stitches of laughter?

"I'm not talking to my Dad. Not unless I have to... And I do reread books that I've memorised. Especially certain books." Like the one in her bag, the one that she had been reading during the shopping trip and the one that had been in front of her before Fletcher appeared.

That same bloody book, because it clearly meant ever so much to her sentimentality.

"It's not you who has a problem, so... just go back to sweeping or talking about whatever it was you were talking about and I'll try again. I'll try to pretend I'm interested."

There. That was making an effort. That should be good enough for Fletcher.

"I'm .. I'm not the one who has to deal with it?" Fletcher repeated her words, exalting them with a skyward toss of his free hand. "Wow. That -- that's a good one. It really is, Cloasse. You've got a great sense of humor."

He stared at her in disbelief, her outburst still ringing in his ears.

"Sorry about you and your dad." He shrugged as he lied. "Hopefully it won't be too awkward on Friday, you being in the ceremony and all."

His hackles lowered. Fletcher wanted nothing more than to drop the broom, climb up in the non-existent rafters, and take a nap.

"Right. As long as you're gonna pretend to be interested, I might as well tell you that I didn't want you to be invited to the wedding, but Gina had already put you on the list." The vampire said it casually, offhand-like. "Those idiot kids, too. Not if things are going to turn into a blood bath."

Fletcher glanced up at the ceiling, where his friends the rafters used to be. "I saved you once, I could probably do it again, but I'd rather not. I'd rather you just stay at home, safe, tucked in your little .. I don't even know. Your little study room, then come out and get into the middle of this. But you already are, so says that neat tattoo on your back. And me, I am too."

He threw up his arms. "So that's it, that's more or less what I wanted to say. It's about as real as you'll see me get -- or as real as I can get, like it or not. Your twenty minutes are up, you can do what you like. I'll be seeing you Friday afternoon regardless of what we both want, anyways."

'What we both want' could have meant any number of things. The vampire's expression was -- oddly -- thoughtful. He seemed to realize he still had a broom in his hands, came off of it, and started sweeping slowly once more.

Cloasse couldn't help it. The urge had been in her mind ever since she'd started talking to Fletcher, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't stop the wave of emotion that was soon to come in floods.

The disgruntled Rune Scrit tutted.

Okay, so maybe it wasn't a flood of emotion, but it was some form of expression, anyway.

"I don't know what you're talking about. I don't want to go to the wedding, but it's not because of the House or... Dad or anything like that..."

Could she actually just come out and say it?

"There's this thing that I have to tell you and I'm not sure how to go about it because I think you're just going to laugh at me for it..."

Come on! Talking was the easy part!

"I'm... I'm..."

More words. That sentence needed them.

"I'm going to the wedding with Jase."

What? That wasn't what had been coming out! She was meant to be telling him the really important thing, not her social plans! How could she make this right without coming off as a real idiot? Somehow, she didn't think it was possible...

"Who is Jase?"

Fletcher stopped sweeping again. He hadn't gotten very far in the last four seconds or so, but the inconsistency didn't seem to bother him. The vampire needed his whole mind -- even the bits that moved brooms back and forth -- to puzzle out who this mysterious Jase was.

"What, is that your pet name for Jacey or -- aaah .. "

The memory came back to him, a night about a year ago. Cloasse had more or less newly-returned proudly with a 'boyfriend' in tow. Fletcher recognized a House spook from a mile away; the ensuing confrontation left Cloasse without a date, but in exchange a rather annoyed father.

"Good ole hugs-for-hire, huh?" Fletcher grinned. "I suppose in a ceremony that's gonna be bristling with SCD Agents dressed for war -- not to mention a Geddes Vogler who might actually do something this time -- that's the best security the House can afford. By the way, I don't think his eyes are quite level. From what I remember. Or maybe he just got really troll-like, the way I remembered him. You could do better."

He grinned. "With our luck, maybe he'll get knocked unconscious when the fighting starts. Poor guy, probably won't be too glad to see me again .. "

Her eyes really stung this time. Hugs-for-hire. It wasn't like she was paying him.

"..." Cloasse had opened her mouth to say something and instead found herself incapable of stringing words together. How the hell was she supposed to tell him now? 'Oh, by the way, I'm still in love with you after all of this time. Don't think me a weird stalker though, I'm just loyal. Like a dog.'

"I'm like a dog." That went well. Real swell, so that was. Time for a good old pat on the back before nipping home to commit suicide due to the level of utter embarrassment that was spreading across her cheeks with a dull pink colour. She stooped to pick up her bag once again, scowling at how much heavier it felt now that she needed to leave.

"Ignore that. It doesn't matter that I still like you or anything, I'm just going to go home and sleep."

Cloasse looked back at Fletcher, pausing to extract a coat from her bag and slip it over her shoulders before marching on ahead into the task of buttoning up the dozens of clasps on the garment.

"Then I'll wake up and before I know it I'll be in some ugly dress, walking down some stupid aisle with a man I extremely dislike on my arm, with the bride walking in behind me when it should've been me."

Cloasse, unlike Fletcher, was struggling to keep the extreme bitterness out of her tone.

There were a number of things Fletcher could have said as Cloasse's fingers fumbled to close her coat. Most of them had a prerequisite that he not be what he was, and as a result the Godeaux just sort of stared.

She still liked him. While he had never understood what that was about in the first place -- despite asking and getting a sort-of answer -- Fletcher realized that he approached the idea with no small amount of caution. So what? So what if she still liked him? Gina had been saying she loved him for years, now -- and as the date of their wedding drew near, it was looking more and more like the marriage was just an elaborate ruse to catch three very very bad men.

Too many decades of being Fletcher Godeaux -- a ridiculous name, a French name? A name that was literally a curse -- left the fangless vampire more crippled than he'd like to admit. It was easy to smile and agree that yes, he was amazing and yes, everyone wanted him, because that was the truth. That was how he felt. Things got more complicated when the feelings were directed towards him, though. When he realized that despite knowing and feeling everything there was to know and feel, there were some things he couldn't control.

Like Cloasse getting up and walking out that door. She was already halfway done with those damn buttons.

Maybe he was just a book. A full-color photo, one that walked and talked; just a slightly-nuclear periodic table printed in a textbook. People did what pages couldn't -- they refused to just shut down and stare blankly. They were not rendered useless by vulnerability. Or were they?

It had been so long since Fletcher Godeaux had a real last name, or a family. He couldn't remember how he was supposed to act, in the correct context, or even if he would be able to. And with that sense of self, had the Torment taken his ability to love?

Nothing so cheesy as that! The back-and-forth played itself out just like it had all the times before. Things worked out better when he didn't ask questions -- things like why, what for, and how.

And so as Cloasse neared the door, Fletcher didn't drop the broom, run to her and kiss her -- there was no Hallmark moment, nothing precious or worth special note.

"Goodnight." The Godeaux tried. "Goodbye? I'll see you on Friday. Make sure you catch the bouquet, and have a good night's rest."

That wasn't what she wanted to hear. That was never what she had wanted him to say.

"Goodbye?"

If she had thought that the barb about Jase was painful, it didn't compare at all to hearing that one word come from him. In all of the novels, 'goodbye' meant forever. 'Goodbye' meant that the hero and heroine were going their separate ways, except in those books they always managed to end up with one another, professing undying love and fidelity.

That was not going to happen here. Cloasse didn't think it was, anyway. Far too much to ask, not that she'd ever asked for anything before. One little wish...

"Fletcher." She had stopped, just inside the doorway with one hand on the flat plane of the solid door. "I just... I don't know exactly why I still love you. You're a jerk. You're cruel and you hurt my feelings more than I think you know, or maybe you do and you don't care, but you're still you. You don't change depending on who is around you. Even when the House is crawling around on their hands and knees trying to get any scrap of information they can about you, you're still the same old Fletcher. Having gone through so much... there's no way in hell that you should be the Fletcher that you are."

Cloasse pushed the door open, turning for a bare moment to look Fletcher in the eye.

"I love you 'cause you're you, Fletcher. Everyone else sees this... inhuman experiment that they've named the Godeaux because they're afraid of it. All I see is Fletcher... It doesn't matter."

With that said and completely out of the way, Cloasse left. The only thing she was proud of was that she had managed to get through that whole speech without crying, even if it did mean doing so when she got home.

"It's a green Ellie Saab dress with a layered bottom .. " she couldn't have been older than twenty from the way she looked -- petite, Asian, arms folded and leaning against the wall. The girl smiled slightly at the wolfdog crouched near her feet, "I didn't want any fringe, or to go too short, you know. It may be a summer wedding, but sometimes, you know, too much is just too much!"

The creature lay flat on its belly; linoleum was cooler than being on four paws anyways. The tail gave a thump, then a half-hearted sway. At least the dog was trying to seem like it was listening.

"And I really think the green will match the amulet Liesha's making me wear. You know, so I don't get blown to bits at random. That'd really soil the fabric, don't you think? I think so, anyways."

This was the SCD's New York office -- one of the largest branches, and the home of the Director herself. Past the girl and the dog, across the hall the scene widened and there were nothing but agents darting back and forth in their workplace, dropping reports off at desks, watching the news, or just chatting. For the most part, no one was paying them any attention. The girl chattered on while the dog's amber eyes fixated on the elevator's closed doors.

"But, of course, there's always the risk of clashing with the bridesmaid's dresses. Griff wouldn't go with me the second time when I had to take the first dress back, you know. No matter how much I asked him. He said something about being emasculated, which is nonsense because in about ten years he'll have to do it for his own daughter someday."

Anyone watching the scene might have wondered why this small, Asian girl was talking so much to the dog. Anyone watching might have been surprised, then, when the dog lurched to its feet and gave itself a shake.

"They're coming." He grunted, just as the elevator gave a ding!

"So we're clear right? We want to do our best to make friends. That means Simon, no being a smart-ass, and Cally..." Sonya was leaning against the side of the elevator, one leg crossed behind the other casually, shoe rested against the metal. The platinum blonde woman trailed off, waving her hands vaguely. "Cally... don't be..."

"Cally? Don't be Cally? I'm certain that's what you're looking for." Simon's grin was a mixture of quietly self-satisfied and friendly, jokey. You weren't quite sure if he was mocking you, or just teasing. The dark haired Brit was watching the number at the top of the elevator pass by, floor by floor.

Sonya rolled her eyes. "No, Simon. Cally just needs to be... a quieter version of Cally, for a while."

The girl in question was staring at her reflection in the mirror that adorned the side of the elevator, adjusting her dyed red hair with ginger pushes and touches. "Yeah yeah, I get it, no blowing anything up. Are we nearly there yet?"

"That's not exactly what I mea-" Sonya began, before abruptly... "Ding!"

The three occupants of the elevator turned in unison to face the door and the two agents standing outside. Sonya stepped forwards, propelling herself off of the wall with a gentle flick of her heel. "Afternoon." she said in greeting, putting on her best smile. Which wasn't fantastically charming, like that of Simon behind her, or believably 'kooky' like Callysta's; but it was a smile nonetheless.

First contact had been made. One small step for Sonya, one giant leap for-- was that a talking dog?

"Welcome to New York!" the Asian girl beamed, and held out a slim hand for Sonya to take. "I'm Special Agent Wren Mishoyu, and this is Special Agent Tiberius Rex -- "

" -- pleasure."

" -- and we're with SCD Major Cases. Glad you all could make it out on such short notice."

Was she eighteen? Nineteen? There was no way she was part of the SCD's most elite team of investigators.

"Everyone's in the war room. Ti and I will take you there."

The SCD office was all sleek metal and glass, cool blues and bright lights. There were television monitors against the far wall mosaic-style with real-time news footage all across the globe. Wren (with Ti trotting at her heels) led the SOD team through the wide maze of cubicles and interrogation rooms, up a half-flight of stairs to a raised balcony over what the Major Cases squad affectionately called their 'bullpen'.

They came to a steel door with no visible handles, or seams. Wren raised her palm and let it rest lightly against the material. There was a soft whoosh! and the thing suddenly found a gap, dividing and letting them in.

"Welcome, Agent Mishoyu."

If the bullpen had been light and cool, then the war room was dark and streamlined. Ti bounded past the rest of them and down a handful of stairs that spread like a semi-circle pair of arms around an even larger, brighter mosaic-style screen. The wolfdog came to rest next to a slim figure silhouetted against a live newsfeed of troop withdrawl in Iraq. This was Director Liesha Kennicot.

"No. I can't see anything, but make sure the East papers don't pick the story up," she turned, headset in place, finger pressed to the microphone. "If word gets out, Shaheed, there's only so much damage control I can do from my end."

The footage whirled away from marching soldiers to a wide map, four key points blinking in wild crimson.

"My team is on it," Liesha snapped her fingers, and a handful of technicians against a panel of complicated-looking computers set about to frantic typing. "We will talk tomorrow. Shalom."

There was a beep as the call disconnected. The screen behind them faded to black. For a moment they were plunged in darkness (save for the emergency stair lights). A half-second later, though, the florescents flicked on. Liesha removed the headset.

"Nice to see you three," Liesha beckoned that they all sit. A comfortable looking couch was situated in the back of the war room. "Why don't we have a seat before the others get here?"

Sonya raised an eyebrow. The first thing she noticed about this girl was that she was young; abnormally so. Sure, she herself was only twenty six, but Special Agent Wren Mishoyu looked like she was only fresh out of High School. But it was not her place to comment, or judge - the girl probably had valuable assets.

Unfortunately, Sonya's pondering of the agent's age and the reasons for it distracted her enough that she didn't notice the girl's extended hand until it was being retracted. Great job there.

"Ah, afternoon," Sonya began, pretending that she wasn't even the slightest fettered by the talking dog, "I'm Special Agent (because Special Operator sounded more like a particularly talented phone company employee) Sonya Ballifrey, and these are Special Agents Simon Keane and Callysta Crowe."

The two behind her nodded, and offered their own greetings as their names were spoken, briefly and formally. At least that was going well so far.

In the nine months it took to plan this wedding, Geddes was slowly working up the nerve to ask Liesha to be his 'date'. Too bad Jack got there first.

Letting bygones be bygones would mean admitting defeat, and Jacqueline has attempted to arrest the lovely bride too many times in the past for THAT ..

When asked, Liesha respectfully declined the position of bridesmaid. Working out how to keep everyone ALIVE was a bit higher on her priority list.

Is only going so she can support Fletcher... Not to mention Gina made her.

Seeing as Jack recently retired from the SCD, he plans on getting vigorously drunk at the wedding -- battle or no battle -- without worry of professional repercussions.

If this wedding were the perfect trap, then Dusk plans to walk right into it, guns blazing. After all, Gina is HIS girl.

The Torment himself volunteered his estate and other services in the name of holy matrimony. What could he have up his fine silk sleeves?

Character Portrait: Malachi of Desiat

Awkward reunions are inevitable at some weddings. In Malachi's case, running into Geddes -- the man whose work he stole then consequently betrayed -- sure ranks up there with the worst.

Character Portrait: Elaina Ballifrey

Kastner's ever so delightful partner, Elaina is determined to get the bumbling fool to adopt some sort of dignity, in the form of a snazzy outfit. Surprisingly, Elaina is unlikely to be pleased to hear her sister is coming.

Invited or not, these eerie harbingers of death may drop by to give their congratulations, and their condolences.

Where's the SCD Major Case's tactical expert when you need her? In New York, on a shopping trip, still looking for just the right dress to wear ..

Walking through closed doors has never been a problem for Zane, so 'infiltrating' a wedding on an open 23.5 acre plot shouldn't be too hard, either.

Weddings might not be his 'thing' but if it means capturing the bastard who kidnapped and nearly murdered his daughter, Griff will definitely be there.

Being betrayed, and generally wanted dead for the past half year left this 17-year-old Desian mage looking forward to a quiet, peaceful wedding in the Hamptons ..

[OOC] 'Till Death Do Us Part

This is the auto-generated OOC topic for the roleplay "'Till Death Do Us Part"

Hello, friends. If you've been accepted to this RP, then you have a general idea of what's going on -- some of you more general than others.

When posting starts, it's not going to begin exactly at the wedding. Parabola and I have some pre-wedding things to handle, and so do the rest of us! I never got around to writing anything about going out to get gowns or anything interesting and fun like that. It'll be hilarious to watch Gina force Cloasse to go try things on, and to have Jacey snickering into her hand.

So, that said -- I have an issue with where things are going to start off. Parabola and I were going to begin with Director Liesha Kennicot calling the WCPD to warn them about a possible shitstorm, but chronologically the shopping and the other little things would happen first. I was hoping that you all still check your posts, because then we can go ahead and address that here and now, while the forum still yet exists!

I don't know if this has been said -- actually I know it's been said several times, but I'm going to iterate something that's already been iterated -- this is the end of my ten-year canon. It puts the cap on a very long, very complicated story arc -- a very long and very complicated story arc that I haven't even worked out yet. So if something seems like an ass-pull, that's probably because it is. I'm the kind of writer that likes to start off with a big flashy finale, so that when I go back to fill the gaps in, I know what to write towards.

That said, if you're confused, just keep your shirt on because I'm probably feeling the same way. LOL!

But in all seriousness! I want this to be moved to the Competed Roleplay's section once we're all done having our way with this plotline. So even if it's not perfect, and even if it all doesn't fit together .. we're gonna have a wedding, one way or another. If that gets finished, then as far as I'm concerned, that was all the story we wanted to get together!

I should have addressed this earlier on in the post, but if you're going -- Sato! Why can't I see my character? Did you accept it? don't worry. There's a character limit for displaying avatars at around 20. Eric pointed out that with over 20,000 characters in the Multiverse, it would be crashcrash!lag! central if all of them could be seen at once. That said, there are more characters than there appear to be.

I'll just try and break them up into groups/factions.

The SCD Agents (my characters)
-- Director Liesha Kennicot. Most of you should be pretty familiar with her.
-- Jack Calumet. Ignitor. Recently retired. You guys will have heard of him, but that's an extensive canon I haven't glossed yet.
-- Shad Lieffers. Negator. Part of Liesha's former West Coast team.
-- Griff Raley-Sinclair. Pusher. See above.
-- Wren Mishoyu. Tactical Analyst. See above.
-- Tiberius Rex. Tracking expert. See above. Also worked (briefly) with both Liesha and Gina in the past.

WCPD/SOD (Parabola's characters)
--Katy Lockhart. WCPD Commander.
--Alison Sanderson. Head Researcher, acting as coordinator for the ground team.
--Sonya Ballifrey. SOD Team Leader, ground team leader.
--Callysta Crowe. SOD Explosives Expert, ground team.
--Simon Keane. SOD Infiltration Expert, ground team.

The Chromatic Order (my characters)
--Geddes Vogler. Huge priss. 'Nuff said.
--Probably some more. idk.

The House (Cloasse's in charge, technically.)
--Cloasse's dad, whose name escapes me.
--Assorted NPC croonies

Tano Family
--Jadeling Tano

From Desiat Academy
--Liam Skorn
--Keen Chaucer
--Malachi of Desiat

From Aramai
--Zane Diamond
--Rita of Aramei

The Torment
--Sir Nicolas Godeaux

The Savage
--Dusk

Miscellaneous
--Harriet Gaidal. Bartender. (Parabola)
--The Mystic (Kastner). Exiled Mage. (Parabola)
--Elaina Ballifrey. Kastner's partner, Everian mage tutor. (Parabola)
--Lyra Dannavar. Dead chick. (Glint)

Now that all of that's been said and I made a huge organization fail, I think I can leave that be. Hopefully tomorrow we'll catch each other and head to the forum, as I'm a bit fed up with chat right now.

_________________________________________________________________________

At Parabola's suggestion and my agreeing, this is going to be a crude sort of timeline.

1. Liesha makes the call to the WCPD, warning them about the fireworks that are about to go down. Though the baddies present range from Malachi of Desiat to Sir Nicolas to Dusk himself, the SCD Director dwells only on Dusk, as he has caused the most inter-departmental cooperation.

2. Parabola's scene -- his characters out shopping for clothes.

3. Gina/Jacey/Jadeling/Cloasse/Gina's mom/Liesha out for bridesmaid dresses. This, of course, is where I'm stayed a bit. Can't be too soon before the wedding, but chronologically it could be first.

4. Cloasse/Fletcher's scene. This would take place at the bar, but not .. like .. there. You know what I mean.

5. Liesha's team meeting Sonya's team. Doesn't have to be immediately before the wedding, it's feasible that they'd come to the USA a few days before the wedding.

Thats about all I can think of. After that, then I'll open the actual wedding.
