A pack of mutated dogs, all large and small in size, are scattered out in a mountain range; and must come together to stay safe from the many packs that occupy the area.

724 readers have visited To Play with Fire since MythicalGenocide created it.

Introduction

Over the widespread Valley that is surrounded by mountainous area, is a untouched forest aged by time and growth, teeming with tall pines and lumbering timbers, with humble birds that reside within them and plenty of elk to graze on the meadow's sweeping grasses that sleep in the north of the valley.

In that valley, with the pines and the timbers and the birds; feasting on the elk: are packs of wolves. Three, probably to be exact; and all more bigger and more fierce than the next. The untouched land and protection from bigger predators the mountains provide has allowed them to grow large, very large, in numbers to watch over their land. With thousands of years of rein, and of hundreds of generations; something went wrong in genetics and caused severe mutations such as extra body parts to simple mutations, like two different color eyes and health problems.
Being completely used to 'their kind' and way-ward of outsiders; the wolves, now known as 'Normies', or 'Normals', are scared of the wolves with mutations, who carry bad names like diseases, mutants, mutts, freaks of nature, and whatnot.

Some call them mutants, some call them demons; Curses from God himself.
Who really knows? They're different. Normals don't like them.
That's all that matters to them.

Its now coming to a almost-war between the Normals and Mutants, after a recent attack on a mutated wolf after a recent attack on a mutated wolf that led to three normals dead.
They attacked in fear, He retaliated in self-defense.

Jalisto slowly picked up paw from paw as he gently padded on a mountain ledge, paw from paw. Slowly, trying not to make noise. He swung his tail as he walked over the rocks over looking the valley with the golden-yellow sun lowering deeper into the background further and further as each step he took, meaning night was coming. He took a deep breath, slowly, trying not to make noise, as he didn't know what could be watching him, stalking him, or around him. His tail flicked, leaping onto a ledge taking him higher onto the mountain.

Aberration sat in the snow, perfectly disguised as she watched a wolf of such oddity. What set him apart was the sharp jagged spikes, almost like rock. Dark in color and protruding from his skin and fur starting at his tail and progressing in size and height to the top of his head where it ends in a crown of horns with two sticking out of the middle of the crown like goat horns. Beside his yellow eyes that are circled with gray are two horns just like on his back that stick out and curl downward a bit. Aberration wondered whether to speak to him, but decided that he would have to start the conversation. She breathed in the thin, cold mountain air in a sigh and then closed her eyes.

Jalisto turned a circle after he jumped onto the ledge, folding his ears back and taking a long, hard look into the snow-laced valley with sugar coated trees as the sun dwindled past the far-side mountain top and his tail wrapped around him similar to a cat's tail. He scouted the land. Looking for every trace of life he could find; either that be wolf, elk, bobcat or what ever could be lurking. Behind every tree, in every tree, lurking behind the rocks or buried in the blanket of snow. He sniffed the frigid air as something caught his eye, startling him, making him perk his ears up. Buried in the snow almost camouflaged with it's white fur was another wolf; only to be picked out by it's little black nose. He examined it, and it's body; a slender frame and what looked like... three tails? That's odd. As the three-tailed wolf appeared to be sleeping, Jalisto wanted to see if it would attack, or would it run or what. Three tails could mean its a mutant like him... or he could be hallucinating.

"Moof."
He barked, quietly hoping to get it's attention.
"Moof,"
Once more.

The wind gently carried the sound of a bark to the sleeping wolf. Aberration raised her head and met the mutant wolf's gaze. Strangely, she wasn't afraid; but still ready to bolt. She opened her mouth and let out a bark, wondering if the other wolf was friend or foe.

'Good. I have it's attention.'
Jalisto uncurled his tail and raised it high in the air and pushed himself up by his hind legs, standing now on the ledge. His ear flicked as he leaned his head out, curious, and almost skeptical of why the wolf didn't attack. He huffed, impatiently, sending a smoke stack of warm air from his nose and knowing there was more than likely going to be an attack. But the three tails.. it wasn't normal. That's what rose his interest, he wasn't one to start a fight, he clearly didn't want to. But he opened his mouth without thinking, hoping to at least speak with the snowy white wolf, and spoke "Are you going to hurt me?"

The other wolf had moved to a high ledge and Aberration now had a good view of it. The wolf was shiny, dark black, with a smokey gray lining his belly, mussel, and curling around his eyes, stopping in a point on the top of his head. His paws seemed too big for his body, and his tail seemed too short. Aberration studied it with her beady little eyes and slowly stood up in a hunter's crouch as she slowly moved to watch it with a better view. "Are you going to hurt me?" the wolf spoke. Aberration quickly scampered up a rock before answering. "Maybe, you never know."

Jalisto cocked his head and slanted his golden eyes, physically questioning what they meant by that. He really didn't want any trouble, a fight today would just mean another reason to run. Jalisto leap down from the ledge he was on and back down to the rocky mountain ground, covered with snow that chilled his pads slightly. He lowered his head down, showing he didn't mean harm, and sniffed the air hoping to get a scent of the wolf; female. Young.

Aberration looked down from her rock at the approaching wolf. He was a brute, one she didn't want to challenge; so Aberration simply asked a question. "Are you part of a pack?"

"Nope." He spoke with a slight questioning tone at the end. "Well, these things aren't appreciated much by others." He chuckled and flicked his tail, raising his head up. Jalisto didn't feel completely safe, and something about this she-wolf was... off... but he didn't feel as if an impending attack was awaiting.

"Oh." was all Aberration said. Why wasn't he? Any pack she had heard of would appreciate him, perhaps he was new at this high altitude. Whatever the matter, she did't want him to fall into their paws, he was versatile; like her. Aberration didn't want to lose a wolf just like her, so she hopped off the rock and approached him.

Jalisto quietly, paw by paw, took a single step back as the fae approached him; He didn't want to get that close. Yes, he wasn't scared, but no he didn't trust her. He didn't feel completely safe. "I've been pushed around and beaten enough to know that no tribe would care to see me in their pack."

"Then you must not know about the packs at the tip of the mountain. They fight a lot." Aberration wanted to crawl back onto her rock but forced herself to stay on the ground. "They don't want me though, I'm just a freak. You, however, look like a fighter."

"Nah," He said, flicking his ears back. "The packs around here don't like the weird ones, like me." He spoke, trying not to sound too serious, looking up to his horns and smiling, hoping she wouldn't catch that he hated them. He truely did. It was the only reason he didn't belong anywhere, and he strongly doubted that any pack would want him; being he was deformed.

"Well if you can reach the highest point which is, like, 12,000 feet in the air than a pack might take you in." Aberration cocked her head, confused in why he seemed to dislike his horns. She liked them, and he would surely be an amazing fighter if he was trained properly. "Not many wolves can take that much altitude, it's really hard to get up there." She herself had been up there before, the dangerously thin air seemed to almost boost her.

Jalisto thought about what this meant. A pack that could take him? Bah, no pack in this valley would care to see him die than to take him in. But in the mountains? This might just be his one chance to belong. His tail rose, wanting to wag, but restrained himself in order not to show emotion. He was skeptical, but highly interested.
"You mind giving me directions, or something?" He spoke with a smug smile on his snout.

"Well you wanna put up with me? I'll take you there if you promise not to let them hurt me." Aberration took a few steps forward, curious why he was looking so smug. Was he going to trick her? "Additional fees included for medical care, food, and water locations." She winked and brushed a tail over his snout as she turned to jump back on her rock.

He had never been around females before, but he was almost certain this was what flirting was. He chuckled and nodded, watching her jump back on the rock, waiting for her to take him to new worlds; where he could fit in and be normal, or be shunned and attacked, beaten like usual. His tail flickered around a bit in excitement, gazing over at the female.
"Where to?" He asked joyfully. "And I don't think I know your name,"

"My name is Aberration. We're going to the Peaks. What's your name?" Aberration peered down at him and could clearly see from his happy reaction that he was in. Bravo Aberration, Bravo. She told herself as she hopped down and started heading down an old dirt path. "I'm watching you." Aberration said over her shoulder.

Dee sniffed the air, not sure what was around. Why did finding shelter away from danger have to be so hard? Dee put her head down and sniffed the ground, making sure she was on a path that held no other wolves. She didn't want to fight; she was just too bad at it.
Dee stalked a few feet, and raised her head. She froze in fear. Two wolves were standing right in front of her.
