Introduction

Image

You already know how this goes.

You've seen the shows, watched the movies, read the comic books... You know all about superheroes and their trials and tribulations, about their amazing feats and heroic acts of justice. You know about the devious villains, ever eager to cause chaos and calamity and hell-bent on ruining everything for everyone but themselves. It is the simple, archetypal tale as old as time –– the tale of good versus evil. Just, you know, with crazy superpowers and worldwide disasters thrown in.

This story isn't much different.

Optima City, known as the largest and most bustling metropolis on the planet, is home to the League, a group of super-powered individuals who have made it their mission to protect those who need protection. These heroes are the idols and guardians of Planet Earth and its inhabitants, as good and just as the day is long.

By contrast, their villainous counterparts are as evil and corrupt as the night is long. They pose a threat to everyone around them, and with supernatural abilities that rival even the greatest heroes, they are a rebellion that cannot seem to be stamped out.

Things were this blatant and black-and-white for a very, very long time.

But this is where the tale gets a little… muddled.

A few decades ago there was a great battle between the League and their mortal enemies. It was a battle so fierce and of such a large scale that the geographical damage can be seen from space. Heroes and villains were at each other's throats for days on end, exhausting every resource they had in order to oust the other side. But as the final stage of the fight drew to a close, it became apparent that a great majority of the most powerful beings on the planet had lost their lives in the struggle, effectively taking out nearly 70% of the population of 'Supers.' Civilians mourned the loss of their heroes and rejoiced in the elimination of the most dangerous threats the world had ever known.

With so few Supers left, the civilians were able to return to a much more peaceful and uneventful life. The Supers themselves, on both sides, had withdrawn from the mainstream in order to recooperate and factor out their losses. The villains, fearing that their much smaller numbers could mean the end for them, formed the Anti-League in order to have each other's backs. Meanwhile, the League went through drastic changes of its own; it was forced to downsize in almost every way. Many of the older members retired, hoping to take advantage of the era of calm that had come over the planet, which strained the already dwindling numbers even further. the League was forced to begin junior hero training programs with younger Supers in order to teach them to become the heroes of tomorrow.

Slowly but surely both sides have been regaining their strength and numbers, but with the changing tides nothing is quite as black and white as it used to be. The younger generations seem to have their own agendas, and since the future rests on their shoulders, who knows how things will turn out.

Regardless of the details, the heart of this story is the same as any other: everyone is fighting for something, and they will do whatever it takes to get it.

Toggle Rules

☆ ⎜ GENERAL. I'm going to keep these brief because seriously, who likes reading rules. Just because the rules are brief doesn't mean I'm going to let things slide, though! So pay attention! First up we've got all the usual stuff: absolutely NO god-modding, and keep things pg13. There's going to be violence and there's going to be swearing. I don't care about romantic stuff so long as you're following the TOS.

☆ ⎜ LITERACY. I expect an advanced-literate mindset and adv-lit role playing and adv-lit character building. That said, we're all lazy here. The minimum posting amount is a measly 300 words.

☆ ⎜ ACTIVITY. Be as active as possible –– that's a given for any role play. I'd appreciate two or three posts a week, but if something will majorly prevent that let me know. Please do not ever drop out without warning. Let me know if you want to quit, it's not a big deal.

☆ ⎜ CHARACTERS. Characters are the life and soul of this role play, so make a character you'll have fun with and who will fit well into this reality. Make them unique, too. Colorful casts at the best! I'd like a lot of variation on the powers and abilities, too, but the deets for that can be covered when you send in your reserved form. There won't be a lot of freedom in terms of aliens and other races, but we can work something out if you're really keen on something like that.

- Class S: User shows complete mastery of ability and has achieved the full extent of their power
- Class A: User has near complete mastery of ability and is close to achieving full extent of power
- Class B: User demonstrates an above-average level of mastery over ability but still has a way to go
- Class C: User has an average level of mastery over ability and is most likely still in training
- Class D: User has little control over ability and is most likely only just discovering his/her powers
- Class E: User has absolutely no control over ability and most likely poses a threat if powers get out of hand

- Stats: The four fields (Speed, Stamina, Strength, Intelligence) function as a way of categorizing a Super's overall ability. A Level 1 stat reflects the average ability of the average human being while Level 10 stats are almost always unique to S Class Supers.

☆ ⎜ INTERACTION. This role play will have a major emphasis on character relationships and interactions. There are going to be a lot of different roles, so you're encouraged to plot with other people. Some suggestions for relationships are friends (obvs), sidekicks mentor-mentees, bitter rivalries or sworn enemies, duos, etc, etc.

☆ ⎜ PARTICIPATION. Please be willing to participate and to chat it up with your fellow role players. I intend to have a lot of exciting and/or crazy events going on during the course of the role play, since I like to mix up the action and drama with comedy and fun-times. If you're not willing to throw your character into a pit of chaos then we might have a problem. Again, you are very much encouraged to frequent the ooc thread.

☆ ⎜ APPLYING. If you're cool with the above rules, you can apply! Please be sure to include all of the required information. Please also feel free to send me a PM any further questions or concerns you may have at this time. This preliminary process is pretty important so yeah.

Jacob's stomach muscles were complaining about the sudden influx of pain. Not that Jacob could really blame them as a punch to the stomach always sucked. Sitting by the bin, Jacob wrapped his lanky arms around his knees. The young man's mind was a mess of fear, confusion, panic and "Darkspawnsupersheroesstrangersohgod". Necrosis and Blur had appeared out of nowhere, Swallow was still hanging around and another super (Blake, air, rogue "Quiet brain, more important things going on right now". ) all equated to Jacob's brain having a little fit and panic. Thus most rational thought leapt out of his cranium cap and cartwheeled out of the alley, leading to something his sister had dubbed as "rabbit in the headlights" syndrome. Jacob's hands began to shake and he just wanted to get away from these people. They symbolised the things that scared him most, other supers knowing what he could do and locking him away for it. Adding in his shyness, Jacob wasn't in for a pleasant experience. Everyone knew Jacob was shy but not many people out of his family knew just how shy he was. People also underestimated just how much the idea of being taken by heroes or villains for their own purposes terrified the young technomancer.

The young man clambered to his feet, his eyes wide and face ghostly pale. His orange-brown eyes flickered all around the alleyway, looking for some way to get away from these people, coming in come what seemed every angle. Jacob's skin crawled as he felt a million pairs of eyes staring him down, scrutinising his every move. He backed away from the group in front of him, seeking any form of escape. His breathing came out in little stuttering gasps. Horrid menacing voices from the back of his mind echoed around Jacob's head, taunting him with piercing comments and fears.

What a freak, look at you, scared of everyone, scared of yourself.

Look at you, pathetic.

Can't even control yourself.

Everybody's watching you and they are all laughing at you.

They want to lock you up, Jakey, put you away.

The heroes are going to get rid of you and I can't blame them. Who would want a freak with uncontrollable powers running around?

Jacob gulped, trying to force his brain to be quiet and stop panicking so much. Unfortunately, his brain wasn't exactly in the mood to be considerate. All the possible and impossible scenarios popped into his head, supplemented with images. Electro shock chairs, experiments, immaculate cells with padded walls, brainwashing, control, mindless drones. Jacob's nail dug into his palms, drawing smudges of blood as he bit his lip hard.

"P-p-please...I..." Jacob's eyes flickered from one super to the next, backing away some more, his skin crawling as more images and threads of information fuelled his fear.

"J-j-just let m-me go...please...I...I d-d-didn't mean to c-cause any trouble..." Jacob ducked his head, his orange-brown eyes trained to the ground. He awaited the response of the heroes and of Swallow as his powers inwardly attacked his sanity by bombarding him with ugly images of torture and isolation.

Sitting at home for the rest of his life eating Cheerios and Ben and Jerry's was becoming more and more of a truly viable life option. And compared to this, a half decent, rather enjoyable life choice at that.

Eric really didn't know how Lily did it. For most of their time together, she had said or did nothing, but somehow she managed to irritate him by simply being present. Most people got the hint eventually, but it was Eric that was the first to leave, not the girl. He'd made some rubbish excuse, bound by a civil upbringing to do so, and then had left as quickly as possible without raising suspicion.

Unbeknownst to Eric, although briefly distracted by an old acquaintance, and a proper lunch at a downtown pub, he and Miss Lilith were both suffering from the same chronic problem. Boredom. Without pretty girls or a cool costume, Cuirass's appeal to the masses quickly faded away into one or two autographs and several photos. Cuirass might have been the leader of the league, but he simply wasn't a particularly cool hero; no fire balls or lightening bolts or being impaled by a sword and be entirely unaffected by it. He was the guy who stopped those heroes from being at their best. He was still a hindrance in the eyes of the public when it came to their idols.

Eric ignored his pager when it first started beeping. It was probably just a PR thing, or interviews, or some other trivial thing. Instead he continued to bask in the sunlight hitting his face at just the right temperature. A second round of beeping did just enough to get his reluctant attention. He glanced lazily at the display, sitting up a little straighter as he recognised an alert from Sam. The second beep was merely to say that Lily was on her way to assist; meaning that Cuirass could take his sweet time. Between the two of them, they could manage things just fine.

Eric straightened up slowly, stretching and cracking one or two muscles as he strolled in the direction of the alert. He began stretching out his ability to a radius of about ten feet, and from there he began to intensify the effect, just in case. Sure enough a small crowd had gathered around an entrance to an alleyway, and as he pushed through, he spotted Necrosis, Blur and a girl he didn't recognise. A pile that resembled Swallow and another boy lay on the ground.
"Freak show's over. Don't you lot have some celebrating to do elsewhere or something?" Cuirass scowled and turned on the crowd, eyeing any suspicious characters reluctant to leave.

With the crowd dispersed, Eric stalked back to Lily, Sam and the mystery girl, eyeing her suspiciously. He wasn't letting his ability down; he was unaware of how uncomfortable it would be for her, Sam and even Lily would be somewhat adjusted to it by now.

"How about you girl scouts explain to me right now what happened here," He growled, arriving in time to hear the end of what the girl said. She was promptly ignored as he rounded on the two heroes. "If you've been screwing around with your powers and got yourselves caught, I don't want to hear any bull about that sonofabitch-" Swallow was vaguely indicated on the ground with a thumb. "-starting it. You're big and bloody well ugly enough now to handle one fight a year without powers."

Eric was about to go on when the second unknown scrambled to his feet, vaguely resembling a deer stuck in the headlights of an eighteen wheeler. He began to stutter away, the negator doing little to ease his worries. Instead, identifying him as a super, he shut down his ability completely, expanding his range another couple of metres to be safe.
"Don't flatter yourself kid, we're not here for you."

Before Lily could respond to Sam's suspicions, Blake called out and strode over to the pair; he again noticed an unusual breeze picking up as she approached, causing a crackling against the electrolytic particles that were still dispersing. Sam shot a quick glance at Lily to make sure she was paying attention, then refocused his attention on Blake.

"I think that perhaps some explanations are in order?" She raised an eyebrow at the two League members, but a smile remained on her face. Her stomach growled and she blushed, "Possibly over lunch?"

The gnawing sensation in Sam's stomach returned, and his mouth began watering at the mere mention of food. He loosened his expression and allowed a genuine smile to take shape. "I won't speak for everyone," he began while gesturing to Lily with his hand, "but I would certainly enjoy-"

Sam's thought was interrupted by a familiarly loud and gruff voice: "Freak show's over. Don't you lot have some celebrating to do elsewhere or something?"

Sam sighed in frustration and turned around. It was Cuirass, sure enough, and he was clearly not in a good mood. Not that it's a surprise. A chuckle rose in Sam's throat, but he managed to hold it down with an obnoxious cough. The League idol made his way towards the group of supers with a scowl spread across his face. Within seconds, Sam felt the also familiar and uncomfortable sensation of having his power suppressed. Even with his powers dormant, the sensation made his skin crawl and body ache. Sam squeezed a fist to focus his thoughts above the dull pain. Is that entirely necessary?

"How about you girl scouts explain to me right now what happened here," Eric commanded them with a growl, "If you've been screwing around with your powers and got yourselves caught, I don't want to hear any bull about that sonofabitch-" He motioned towards Swallow. "-starting it. You're big and bloody well ugly enough now to handle one fight a year without powers."

Sam clenched his teeth and prepared to respond with the unknown super, the scrawny one who was hit, scrambled to stand up. The kid's face showed pure fear, and it looked like he was having a panic attack. He managed to stammer out a plea: "J-j-just let m-me go...please...I...I d-d-didn't mean to c-cause any trouble..."

Wow, this kid's a wreck. Again, Sam opened his mouth to respond but was silenced by Cuirass. "Don't flatter yourself kid, we're not here for you."

"Yeah," Sam continued in a more gentle tone, looking the kid in the eye, "no one here is going to hurt you." He then turned and faced Eric directly, adopting a stern face to confront his leader. "Well," he tightened his fist again in concentration, "I saw that unknown super step on Darkspawn, who was using her powers, and then get socked in the stomach by Swallow. The next thing I knew, Darkspawn picked up Swallow and slammed him against the wall before bouncing away."

Sam took a deep breath, and continued to clench and unclench his fist. I'm so sick of him treating me like a kid.

Lily gave a mental sigh of relief as she found Sam safe and sound, although she found herself glancing around as she felt an uncomfortable feeling rise up in her chest. She frowned, unable to place the invisible threat, checking Swallow and the other from afar. She nodded as her fellow Hero explained what had happened up to her arrival, blinking as he turned around quickly. She opened her mouth to ask him a question, but found he answered it anyway.
"There's something else, Lily. I think I may have another super with me."

The dark haired super frowned for a second, following Sam's line of sight to a pretty girl in the crowd. Wait, was she with them or against them? She didn't recognise her, which could have been a good or a bad thing. She glanced back at Sam, but his expression betrayed nothing. A slight breeze picked up, nothing that Lily would have noted as being unusual if she hadn't caught the look out of comrade's eye. Air manipulator? It didn't seem like she was a threat, even as she approached them.

"I think that, perhaps, some explanations are in order?"
"I think it might be of benefit," Lily nodded in agreement with Sam, the uncomfortable feeling in her chest rising into pain. Fingernails unknowingly biting hard enough into her palm to draw blood. Any other words spoken were ignored. She knew exactly who it was--Cuirass. The nature of her ability meant that his ability affected her more strongly, suddenly bringing her body to an agonisingly slow pace. One might have deemed that fact alone as reason enough to leave him alone. However since his promotion, he could hardly be seen to act like such a tyrant to one individual. She gritted her teeth as he announced his arrival, in a far worse mood than she had left him in. Sulking over not being Mr. Popular, she'd bet. As he approached, she unconsciously raised a hand to her chest. Breathing was becoming harder now being this close to him.
"How about you girl scouts explain to me right now what happened her. If you've been screwing around with your powers and got yourselves caught, I don't want to hear any bull about that sonofabitch starting it. You're big and bloody well ugly enough now to handle one fight a year without powers."
Lily swallowed a snappy insult. She didn't need Cuirass to pump up the volume any further.
Sam was speaking, but she wasn't really listening, until the latter half of his sentence drew her attention to a terrified looking figure a few feet away.
"We're not looking for a fight, today out of all days." Lily interjected softly; a frightened super with limited control over their powers was almost more dangerous than a super-charged villain. This guy is always an asshole. She didn't voice that thought, but shot Eric a filthy glare, noting Sam's clenched fists. She'd like to see him try; Eric was bad enough in their so called 'training sessions' when she landed a foot or a fist.

Jacob, still in his utterly panicked state, had not noticed the added additions of Curiass and Necrosis to the merry group of heroes until Curiass spoke to him. Well more at him than anything else. Not that Jacob noticed as the weight of a tank was shoved on his shoulders. At least that is what it felt like. A deep rooted itch started up in Jacob's core as his powers complained about being suppressed. The young man couldn't complain too much as it helped clear his head a bit more. Jacob felt that he could actually think clearly again although most of those thoughts were just a mixture of "ohmygod" panic. However, this moment of relief was marred by the fact a mental bus had just landed on his head and was inviting all its bus friends for a flaming street party. The pressure was painful and Jacob just knew, he just knew, that his powers were going to get their own back later because of this. Damn abilities and their high maintenance behaviours. The young man had been under the impression that super abilities were meant to be helpful rather than life dictating.

Ignoring the fact that his head felt it was going to cave in (restricting the flow of information suddenly was never good, especially after an overload), he cast a quick look at the group of heroes. They didn't sound...very happy talking to each other. In fact, Blur looked as if he was going to knock Curiass' head of his shoulders. Speaking of punches, Jacob's stomach was causing him some discomfort and by discomfort, he meant it freaking hurts. His shaky breathing wasn't exactly on his muscles and it kept aggravating the injury. In fact, everything was just aggravating his intense anxiety.

Jacob just wanted to go home but he had no idea if these supers who were almost guarding the exit of the alleyway were going to let him leave. Did they need a statement or anything? Did they know who he was, what he could do? Jacob hoped not but a little voice in the back of his head told him that it was highly likely.

S'not as if you've been discrete with your machine manipulation, huh, Jakey?

Jacob decided to ignore the voice in the back of his head until further notice as talking to himself was something he wished to avoid. After all, Octavia was meant to be the nutcase of the family what with the whole "in though with the spirits" kick she was currently on. The Worthings didn't need their son going off the rails while they tried to convince their oldest daughter to take back her fiancé and go back to being a lawyer. Instead, Jacob pushed Mister Negative back down and mentally skirted around the whole idea of going insane (because if his paranoid streak latched onto that idea...). Jacob let out a soft cough before moving forward a bit, his eyes still wide and throat still as dry as the desert.

"W-w-well, I-it seems you g-g-guys have some s-stuff to sort out so I-i'll j-j-just....g-go..." And this that, the young technomancer awkwardly slipped past the group of heroes and took off down the street, feeling the need to get home, get to his safe haven. Then he'd go to the park or something. Surely he wouldn't meet more supers.

However, despite this confidence, Jacob had no doubt that fate was going to screw him over around today. He could feel it in his bones. Although, on the plus side, those imaginary buses had decided to go rain on the heroes parade instead of following him and it was always a plus when your imaginary mentally crushing buses decided to bugger off.

Jacob stopped dead. Not for the first time (and certainly not the last), the young man severely hoped that no one in the current area was a mind reader or he'd be in the loony bin faster than he could say "they're hypothetical buses!" He shook his head. Obviously, the panic of the day was getting to him. Jacob looked at his watch. It was only early afternoon. Great. So far, so good.

Blake frowned as an uncomfortable pressure started building in her lungs. With the arrival of the tall guy, she started feeling woozy and almost faint.

Wait... his power was suppression, wasn't it? That guy was Curiass.

"How about you girl scouts explain to me right now what happened her. If you've been screwing around with your powers and got yourselves caught, I don't want to hear any bull about that sonofabitch starting it. You're big and bloody well ugly enough now to handle one fight a year without powers," he asked abrasively.

Artistically, Blake briefly wondered what his muscle structure would look like, how much his size would change how he was built. She would probably ponder more on it if she could just breathe.

The woman and Sam responded to him, but she for some strange reason, everything was sounding sort of fuzzy and distant. What was the matter with her? Suddenly dizzy, she braced a hand against the brick wall of the alley and rested her forehead on the cool stone. Gray eyes blinked blearily as she forced herself to focus. Her heartbeat pounded out a fast tattoo in her ears.

Think, Blake. Think.

It wasn't her blood sugar. She had gone this long without eating plenty of times before without any ill effects. The boy who had been laying on the ground earlier sped past her, but she barely noticed.

What she did notice was the small rush of air at his passing.

She felt the movement, but not the particles, not the connection she usually had with every single molecule.

Huh, so this is what power suppression feels like, she thought bleakly to herself.

Her body knew to panic before her mind did, and had now initiated what had to be one hell of a panic attack. Her muscles were locked, and all she could do was gasp at the air like a dying fish. She reached out blindly with one hand, hoping to get someone's attention.

"Get... him... away..." she choked out with a wheeze. "I... I can't breathe."

Blake's fingers dug into the grooves of the brick as she closed her eyes, desperate to hold back from either the fainting or vomiting that her attacks tended to induce.

Darkspawn hadn't been gentle with her little temper tantrum. From the moment he hit the ground, Swallow was out like a light—or at least, he had been. The instant Cuirass piled on those anti-superpower death rays of his, Swallow's entire body twitched and jolted in protest. The effect was something akin to a particularly unpleasant alarm clock. He was wide awake within milliseconds.

Immediately, he wished he wasn't. It felt like there were a hundred squirrels armed with jackhammers drilling holes in his brain. And his jaw. And his stomach. Oh, god, his tortured stomach. Valiently trying to digest things normal stomachs were never supposed to digest, which absolutely sucked because, what do you know, all of a sudden Swallow had a normal stomach.

He rolled over (and instantly felt like dying) and managed a half-hearted, squinty-eyed glare at the veteran superhero. Not that the guy noticed; stupid blustering old coot was too busy yelling his head off at his stupid underlings—wait, was that Sam he was ordering around? What the heck? Sam was a…Sam was a hero? Well, damn. And he kind of liked the guy, too.

…So…did that mean everything Sam said had been a lie—? The whole fan thing? It had all been a set up, hadn't it?

And Blake, had she been lying, too? Was she some sort of creepy undercover superhero agent in disguise as well?

Bolstered by a dull sort of anger, Swallow opened his mouth to call them out, but what came out was something markedly less coherent than he would have liked.

"Ugh-bleaurgghhh," he said, and then promptly vomited. The lovely sight of half-digested charcoal and cardboard and bits of cloth and metal flowed out for the entire world to behold.

Effing Cuirass, he thought, struggling to wobbly feet. Hate, hate, hate him. So much. All his superpowers, everything that made him special, everything that made him Swallow—gone. Stripped away on a whim, because Cuirass was a freaking superhero, and people kissed the ground he walked on, so he could do whatever he wanted. Even today. Especially today.

And yes, how hypocritical of stupid lowly Swallow, the stupid lowly villain, to think such things, when he was abusing his abilites as well! Well, screw that. He was a villain. Laws only applied to the good guys, wasn't that right? He just wanted to have fun, but noooo, Cuirass had to show his ugly face and make everything suckier than suck.

"Get…him…away…I…I can't breathe."

The horribly desperate voice pulled Swallow out of his self-hosted pity party, if only for a moment. It was, surprisingly, the lovely Miss Blake. Her face was a study in panic; one hand flailed uselessly in air, while the other clawed at the brick wall behind her like a desperate, dying fish out of water…wait, wrong metaphor. Swallow's brain was still a bit fuzzy. Still, he was lucid enough to realize that Blake probably wasn't in with the good guys, if the blatant fear on her face was anything to go by. If Swallow had been, for whatever reason, set up, then she wasn't in on it.

With a grunt and a haphazard swipe of his sleeve on his face, Swallow half-swayed, half-stumbled his way over to the group of posturing idiots. Vaguely, he noticed that a crowd was gathering as well.

He swung up an arm and pointed at the group with a finger that wobbled in a less-than-menacing way.

"You," he said, and was pleased to see that actual words were exiting his mouth this time. "You all suck."

Then he grabbed Blake's flailing hand and tugged placed it in Sam's clenched one. Bits of vomit from his sleeve stuck to Sam's skin, not that Swallow cared. If the hero-in-diguise couldn't deal with it, then too bad.

He fixed Sam with an unsteady stare. "Mr. Not-Fan. You a superhero, right? Then go do some superheroing. Here's a damsel in distress. Freaking get her out of Mr. Ugly's range."

Then, as fast as a he possibly could without throwing up, he dashed away.

"Villain exit stage left," he muttered.

Ten meters later, the oppressing atmosphere lifted. Swallow allowed himself a grin. Well, that was that. Too many crazy superheros about; it was back to HQ for him. Even if it was only, like, four o'clock or something.

All in all, it wasn't a bad day. Not exactly fun toward the end, but definitely not boring. Sure, Darkspawn was pissed at him, for whatever reason, but that was like her default setting. And he got to meet Eiseth! That wasn't something you got to do every day. Afterburn was gonna be so sorry for opting to stay back at HQ the entire day like a boring hermit sloth… Ah, he was gonna be so jealous!

His mind already alight with the tall tales he'd tell, Swallow slipped into one of the super-duper-secret entrances that led to the underground lair of villains. It was an obscure, smelly little back alley with several dumpsters, plus a dumpster that wasn't really a dumpster. With an easy heave of his arms, he lifted the top, climbed in, closed the lid, burrowed through several feet of old garbage bags, and found the latch to a trapdoor. His usual route of entrance. Bingo.

Now he'd just shimmy his way down, navigate the twisted passages that he had (uncharacteristically) memorized, and then he'd be home free. He'd relax a bit, avoid Darkspawn until she cooled down, and brag to anyone who cared to listen of his overland exploits.

Half an hour later, the door to Afterburn's bunk flew open.

"Hey, Gil!"

"Gil," aka Afterburn, looked up in dull surprise (Afterburn was the only person Swallow knew who could pull off that kind of expression).

Swallow let a slow grin spread across his face, the kind he knew annoyed the crap out of the other junior villain. "You'll never guess what happened to me today…"

Sam waited impatiently for Cuirass to question the validity of his explanation of events. He glanced at Lily, who's expression suggested she felt similarly to him. For some reason, this only made Sam angrier, and he felt his temper flare. I'd teach him a lesson one-on-one. Even if I lost, I'd teach him not to...

Sam's thoughts trailed off as his concentration waned. The power suppression was taking a heavy toll on his physical state; his entire body felt like it was being squashed and confined. Sam took a laborious breath in an attempt to relax. At least I'm used to it, he considered, this would be hell for anyone who-

"Get... him... away... I... I can't breathe."

Sam turned his head wildly towards the source of the desperate wheeze. Blake had collapsed against the side of the alley, digging her fingers into the brick wall. She gasped for air and her body seemed to flounder, clinging to consciousness. Sam felt a paralyzing mix of emotions rise from his gut: surprise, concern, fear, rage. He stood frozen in confused panic, staring at the helpless figure before him.

"You, you all suck." Swallow had awakened from his stupor, and now stood unsteadily behind the group, vomit dripping from his clothes. He pointed an accusing finger at the heroes, before stumbling past them towards Blake. The villain grabbed her hand, tugging a little, and placed it into Sam's half clenched fist. "Mr. Not-Fan," Swallow fixated on Sam, "you a superhero, right? Then go do some superheroing. Here's a damsel in distress. Freaking get her out of Mr. Ugly's range." With that, Swallow turned and ran from the scene in an awkward looking dash.

Sam suddenly felt his courage return to him, fighting back against the panic and suppression that had contained it. He took an uneasy step towards Blake, then stopped and inhaled deeply through his nose. He kneeled slightly, and lifted the girl up with all the strength he could muster. Grunting, he hoisted Blake over his shoulder.

Without a word, he turned and limped out of the alley and away from Cuirass. The crowd of civilians moved out of his way, muttering in low voices as they formed a path. Sam's strength slowly flowed back as he moved away from the suppression field, alleviating the strain on his body. Once he was clear of the alley, Sam gently lay Blake down on the sidewalk and away from the crowd. The job done, he collapsed on the street, out of breath and energy.

Blake barely registered being pulled into Sam's side and lifted over his shoulder. As he carried her through the crowd, the only thought that made its way dimly through her mind was, I sure am glad I wore a long skirt today. Otherwise, a whole bunch of strangers would've just seen my undies.

As he lay her down on the surprisingly cool concrete of the sidewalk, she finally, finally, was able to take a deep breath. The joy of being able to feel the air around her again almost made her cry, or it would have, were she given to tears. Instead, she just closed her eyes, and let her relief and control flow unfettered. A gentle current of air swirled around her, tickling the skin of her ankles and arms.

She wasn't quite strong enough to make herself sit all the way up, but was able to lean up some and use a puff of air to help her make it the rest of the way. Her gray eyes opened and refocused on the slightly drained-looking Sam who lay next to her on the street. Blake was suddenly and briefly glad that all of the streets were closed to anything but pedestrians. She had a sudden mental image of the exhausted hero's head being squashed in a gory spray by a passing car as he lay on the street.

Blake crawled the foot and a half over to his side and sat with her feet tucked under next to him. She smiled softly and murmured, "Thanks for getting me out of there. I felt like I was suffocating." Laying a hand on his arm, she continued,"Do you need any help getting up? You couldn't have been feeling much better than I when you carried me out of there. I had absolutely no idea that power suppression would feel that horrible."

She turned to look back towards the alley that Sam had carried her from. "I wonder what those two are going to do now," she mused, aware in some corner of her mind that with her powers now exposed, her life was about to become very different.

Cuirass's ability forced Lily's body to completely shut down once upon a time.

When she'd built up enough resistance to stay awake, he'd rattled her super immune system so badly that she almost died from pneumonia.

Eric, despite his status, did not play fair. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Swallow vomit, Sam's friend struggling to cope-obviously her first time dealing with Cuirass- and Sam was struggling under the pressure of suppression. He didn't do much training with the older super, and it showed.

Blood suddenly began to pump from Lily's nose. Her body didn't know how to clot blood without powers. A potentially fatal nosebleed wasn't  a laughing matter.

"Get... him... away..."

"Eric." Blood was pounding so hard in her ears, Lilith couldn't tell if she reached her desired volume.

"I... I can't breathe."

"Eric!" A shout for certain this time, although it was a pleading one. The girl was having a panic attack, and the lower half of Lily's face was coated with blood. Swallow made some kind of tirade, none of which she caught, before making a quick exit. The next glance upwards, Sam had the girl in his arms, moving out of Cuirass's range. Something told her that the girl was of a higher priority on Sam's list than she herself was.

"Eric, please. I'm begging you. Stop it. He's gone."

Did it really take that much air to sat those amount of words? Still, he wasn't doing anything to lift his ability. It was physically painful to breathe now.

"Eric."
Nothing. Not a flicker. Was he okay?
"Eric, stop it."
It was a struggle, but Lily took a step forward towards him.

There was only one way Necrosis knew how to switch Cuirass off.

Her fist collided with his jawbone before he could react. It didn't cancel it out completely, but lifted the atmosphere a fraction. She took a deep breath in just before Cuirass cracked one of her ribs. It was painful enough without the hard fall down to the ground. She was completely winded, the decidedly unnatural position of her arm and the sheer agony of trying to move it informed her of a brake. She scrambled to her feet, aiming a wild kick somewhere in Eric's direction. It somehow made contact, but only too soon, another blow to her shoulder knocked her off balance.

Lily had just regained balance when her ankle twisted, sending her tumbling backwards into a trash can. She heard the sickening sound of glass cutting through flesh before the rest of her body registered it. The pressure remained as Eric looked on in shock; he hadn't intended on impaling her. A look of something else flickered there for a second, and he was gone. Turned on his heel and left. Just like that.

Swearing under her breath, Lily carefully stood up, wincing as she felt how far the glass had gone in. A good four inches maybe? The pressure from Cuirass's ability was replaced by nausea and light-headedness. Her skin was dangerously feverish if it were touched. Wincing again as her rub healed, she forced herself not to vomit violently Swallow style, Lily made a couple of steps toward Sam and his new friend before her arm started to heal. Once again she swore under her breath, taking her arm and physically setting it back in place herself, stretching her hand and fingers as it mended. The glass in her back would not be as easily fixed. It could wait until they got back. Lily gave Sam a small smile as she reached the end of the alley, in all her bloodied glory, supporting herself against the wall.
"Sam darling, you look positively dreadful. Do you need a hand at all?"

Sam lay flat on the cold asphalt of the street, only dimly aware of the world rushing by around him. His mind remained blank as his body struggled to regain strength. Come on, Sam, get up. The motivation did no good, and he continued to remain motionless on the ground. Working under a particularly strong power suppression had taken more energy than it should have, and now his body was in hibernation.

Okay, enough of this. Sam closed his eyes and called upon his sixth sense, feeling the plasma that hummed in the surrounding environment. With a deep breath in, he willed it to him; energy trickled back into his body, bringing back the strength to move. Sam exhaled and stretched out his muscles.

"Thanks for getting me out of there. I felt like I was suffocating." Sam opened his eyes. Blake had risen from her attack and was sitting by his side. She lay a hand on his arm. "Do you need any help getting up? You couldn't have been feeling much better than I when you carried me out of there. I had absolutely no idea that power suppression would feel that horrible."

Sam gave a genuine, but somewhat pained, smile. "Don't worry," he chuckled, "you get used to it, I guess." With a bit of effort, he managed to pull his torso of the ground and sit upright, legs outstretched. "Although that doesn't do much, as you can see." Sam brushed dirt off his shirt and realized, with a small degree of annoyance, that some of Swallow's vomit had stuck to his sleeve. Nice.

Blake wondered aloud what was happening in the alley, prompting Sam to look up towards the two heroes. He only saw one, though: Lily limped out of the alley, manually setting her broken arm back in place before leaning against a wall with ironic smile. "Sam darling, you look positively dreadful. Do you need a hand at all?"

He stared in shock a Lily, who was broken and bruised all over; blood seeped through her shirt, suggesting a larger wound. "I could say the same to you," he responded, still eyeing the bleeding, "and I think I should be offering you the hand." Sam slowly stood up, pulling Blake up with him, then paused, unsure whether he wanted to ask his next question. "What happened?"
