Personality: Is crotchety old man a good definition? When he's not drunk he tends to complain about everything. He's not the most pleasant of men, he angers quickly and typically forgets about why he was mad about in the first place by the time he calms down. Hazel complains about how forgetful he is all the time, which is why she makes sure Lucy has access to what she needs when she has to leave her with him. Because more than likely he's going to forget to do anything for the little girl unless Lucy is doing something to aggravate him.
Background: Herb actually was born in one of vaults his family left the vault after a transition period where they lived into the vault and left to explore. His father was an engineer, so he learned allot about how machines work from him. When Herb was ten his parents and two older brothers ventured out to stake their claim in the world. They ended up in L-Mart, afte a while their, his parents turned to farming like many in the community. When he was seventeen a new family moved to the town, that's when he met Camille Faustener. Needless to say he was smitten by the red head and by the time they were nineteen they had called themselves married. He had never really been much for farming, so he fell back on things he'd enjoyed back in the vault. Those machines and tools that his father had worked on. He started searching the wastes for anything like that he could manage to scrape together. Now this meant he spent allot of time away from Camille, but the benefit of the caps he made became very important when Camille gave birth to their son. Will was a smart boy who loved what his father did as much as he did. Herb did his best to teach his son he skills he'd picked up over the years, Camille of course taught him other important things.
He was proud of his small family, it made him sad when his son left but he understood. A few years later tragedy struck, his wife Camille had taken to joining Herb on some of his trips. With no son to dote on at home she wanted to spend time with Herb, on one such trip they were attacked by raiders. Camille was shot and killed in the midst of the firefight, Herb was devastated and dove head first into the first bottle of alcohol he could get his hands after burying her. He managed to send a courier to his son, who didn't even bother to write back. Angry and depressed he sunk deeper into his alcoholism. Most of the time between his wife's passing and when he opened the door to find his son holding the hand of a little red haired girl, was all kind of a foggy haze. But one look at the girl and he could see his Camille made over. What choice did he have but to take them in, the little girl's smile just melted away any hard feelings he had against his son. His son took up the work he'd given up on years before, even as far as making part of their land a little shop. After a while, it all seemed like a blur, Hazel had grown into a beautiful teenager, then for whatever reason he just never understand why Will came home with an orphan. Taking the little thing in as his own was just crazy to Herb, but then again Will was always more like his mother when it came to things like that. The kid so far has been nothing but a pain in the ass, but his son loved them so Herb wouldn't deny him that. Now that his son hasn't been seen in almost a year, since he dared to venture into Chicaghoul, Herb has sunk into his drinking once again believing his son dead. He knows he should try to help Hazel more, but he just can't pull himself out of it.
