Their love was forbidden. Sariel made a trip to earth to survey the land; as a right of passage. Uriel was a Knight, sworn to protect the King. Uriel discovered her in the woods alone, the sunlight illuminating her halo just so. He was the first human Sariel had ever met, the red string of fate had tied them together. Sariel fell from benevolence, her halo had been revoked and she was sent to earth to live in disgrace. Uriel married her, the two living together in secret, until a fellow knight followed him home and discovered the angel there. Interbreeding was illegal, Uriel was jailed by the King and Sariel was taken by slavers, where she discovered she was pregnant. She had her baby in secret, naming her Yuna. The other slaves assisted Sariel in keeping the baby a secret, until her chest began to leak milk and she was beaten until the location of the baby was revealed. They planned to drown the infant in the river, but Sariel knew she could not let that happen. Halflings were bad luck, the baby needed to perish. Sariel used the last of her power to gift her daughter with a bit of magic. She died to save Yuna, who floated peacefully down the river and into the arms of a traveling caravan.
The caravan, believing they had stumbled upon an angel, welcomed Yuna into their arms. A grieving Mother, who had lost her child in birth, became Yuna's wet nurse. She remained with the caravan, being yielded as a symbol of good luck, until the caravan was raided by bandits. They kidnapped the infant, but after one of their horses broke its leg, they abandoned her, believing the child to be unlucky. Yuna crawled right into the hands of slave traders, who kept her caged and locked in a dark carriage between auctions. The child was starved and tormented for fun, unable to fend for herself. Due to the undernourishment and mistreatment, the toddler became catatonic. She was dumped on the side of the road, caged and caked in mud, the slave traders believing that nature would take its course.
It was an old man that came upon her, believing he could get a pretty penny in exchange for the angel. For once, it seemed as though she were in luck.
It was her Father that recognized her, a servant in service of the King. He had never met the baby, but he would know those feathers anywhere; those were Sariel's wings.
Uriel convinced the head maid to make the purchase, exclaiming that the Princess would need a friend and had yet to choose a handmaid. The woman agreed, making the purchase and nursing the toddler back to health. Thus began her training as a handmaid, now able to toddle around on her own.
She worked in service of the Princess, never knowing who her parents were, that her Father was so close and yet, unreachable. When the castle burned, Yuna ran with the Princess, believing that her rotten luck had struck once more.
