The first: charismatic and charming, beloved by friends and strangers alike, but secretly manipulative and ready to rip down others to reach a goal. The second: quiet and intimidating in appearance, yet kind and gentle, wanting nothing but the acceptance of his peers and schoolmates. XXX
When the second realizes the first's lying facade, they strike up a bargain to keep things under wrap, and end up by one another's sides far often than many had expected. XXX
Perhaps, beneath all the lies, certain truths will now arise. XX

"I'm still at the top of the class, Otousama," Takashi phrased carefully, because really, what had he been doing the past few days? "Everything has been successful, sir." Takashi himself wasn't aware of what "everything" consisted of, but he had to say something.
Miyamoto Kenji narrowed his eyes, staring Takashi down through his glasses, the way he did to intimidate the employees in the Miyamoto business who made even the most minor and fixable of mistakes, before firing them. "So you have not been productive," he said simply, his tone calculating and authoritative. "I was considering giving you an internship at the company - a chance for you to do menial labor eight hours a day for the business - but I am afraid you have a long way to go before you could even catch a glimpse of the basic standards for a proper Miyamoto at the halfway point of our metaphorical mountain; I have been immensely easy on you Takashi, and if you were to not clean up your act, do you think it would still be proper for me to call you my son?"
It took a few seconds for that to sink in. Luckily for Takashi, he was spared from responding to his father when one of his and Aki's most trusted and steadfast maid/bodyguard/everything's stepped forward, bowing forward in Kenji's direction. "I apologize for intruding, but I must speak with -"
"Ah, yes, thank you for reminding me about that," Takashi tried to interject as politely as possible as he got up from his seat, although it didn't matter too much since Yseult was the maid and not Takashi. He bowed his head in his father's direction. "May I be excused, Otousama?"
Takashi's father had a disapproving look in his eye, but he airily flicked his hand in the direction of the door, allowing Takashi to leave. Miyamoto Kenji wasn't one of those brutish types; he had the ability to act nonchalant but menacing at the same time, which was precisely what made him so much scarier than the typical man.
"Has he woken?" Takashi whispered to Yseult as soon as they were out of his father's earshot. Yseult nodded.
"And he still has his sanity," she added dryly. Yseult was one of the few who could say this like that to Takashi without being punished; after all, she raised Takashi more than his mother did.
"Tell him that I'm going to speak with him in a few minutes," Takashi stated briefly. He looked back at the dining hall. "After all, there is no way in hell I'm going back there."

In seconds the woman is at his side, rubbing calming circles into his back and whispering something he doesn't really hear. Jirou stands to go to the bathroom and she follows, and he ends up leaning against her half of the way there. He vomits again into the toilet, this time most of it bile and saliva, and the woman continues to rub his back with one hand, gingerly tucking his bangs behind his ears and out of the way. XX
Jirou doesn't so much see the other woman come in as hear her, a soft voice not unlike his mother's, but speaking too low to be heard over the pounding in his ears. He dry heaves a couple of times and then he simply collapses over the toilet bowl, trying to catch his breath as the pain slowly fades. Footsteps leave the room and a hand helps him up. XX
The traces of vomit are wiped from his face and he's led back to the bed, bundled up in the covers until only his head peeks out. He stares up at the woman with half-lidded eyes and she smiles at him warmly. XX
Jirou passes out, and when he wakes up, there's finally a familiar face. XX
"You," He mutters to Miyamoto, still half-asleep. "Why did you help me? I pissed you off, you had every reason to wanna leave me there. Why did you bring me here, to your house, with your family, when I'm the last possible person you'd ever want to call your friend? Tell me why." XX

Takashi nodded at his maid. "Thank you."
Yseult smiled, something dangerously fond in her eyes. Takashi narrowed his eyes slightly, which caused the woman to roll her eyes and shove him in the direction of the door.
Takashi silently walked in the door, barely sparing a sleeping Honda Jirou a glance as he paced around the room, finally stopping near the bookshelf at the edge of the room. He sifted through the books, finally pulling out a German classic - Die Leiden des jungen Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He sat down in the chair next to the bed, flipping through the pages in a bored manner.
Takashi almost jerked back in surprise when he lifted his eyes to see Honda staring back at him.
"You," Jirou muttered to the other teen, his voice rough with sleep. "Why did you help me? I pissed you off, you had every reason to wanna leave me there. Why did you bring me here, to your house, with your family, when I'm the last possible person you'd ever want to call your friend? Tell me why."
Honda's words forced Takashi to think; why did he save the shorter boy, in all honesty?
Finally, Takashi sighed, staring at the German book in his hands. "You're not the last possible person I'd want as a friend," Takashi remarked. It was clear that he was trying to sound confident and aloof, but his words were truthful and raw instead. You're a failure, Takashi. Running away from your father's rejection. Since when did I stoop low enough to associate myself with people like Honda?
"And besides," Takashi considered bitterly, his voice almost low enough to make it seem like he was talking to himself, "why can't I help someone who fainted in some alleyway? Isn't that what a 'good' person would do? Or is it too late for me to be like that?"
That may be what a good person might do, but good people never survive in this world. You should know that by now. 'The fucking idealism of a hero is always cancelled out by how unforgiving human society has become' - isn't that what Aki always says? That's probably why Honda is in a goddamn ditch right now - wasting all his efforts trying to save a mother who, inevitably, will die very soon. He's the good person, and I'm the bad one, but I'll be the successful one at the end of this.

"And besides, why can't I help someone who fainted in some alleyway? Isn't that what a 'good' person would do? Or is it too late for me to be like that?" Miyamoto sounds small, smaller than he ever has. xx
I wonder if this is what Miyamoto's really like behind that perfect mask. xx
"No," Jirou says, pausing to sit up a bit more and rub the sleep from his eyes. "It's not too late for you to be kind. And you haven't been evil so far, you know. You never told anyone I had a job, even when you had every chance to take down someone who could easily be considered less than you. You could've coerced me into just about anything, but you just asked for academic help. Not what a real delinquent would." xx
Jirou has to take a moment to catch his breath, chest still aching a bit from throwing up so much. "But...I can't stay here. I'm sure your parents won't be happy to know you've let a homeless runaway sleep in one of their guest rooms, and my mom needs me. I've already missed too much work sitting here, and I doubt sleeping is gonna help me much." xx
Except trying to get out of bed doesn't work so well, and he ends up on the plush carpeted floor in a heap, dizzy with headrush and weak from probably a whole lot of things he doesn't want to acknowledge. xx
This is ridiculous. Why do I have such terrible luck? I got suspended, collapsed, and now I'm stuck in this guy's house, barely able to stand, while mom's still in the hospital with no one to pay her medical bills. Am I really this destined to have everything in my life just go to hell?! xxx

The black-haired boy gasped for a few moments. "But . . . I can't stay here. I'm sure your parents won't be happy to know you've let a homeless runaway sleep in one of their guest rooms, and my mom needs me. I've already missed too much work sitting here, and I doubt sleeping is gonna help me much."
Honda collapsed onto the carpet on the floor in his attempt to get off the bed. Takashi stood still for a few moments, surprised, before sighing, gently grabbing Honda by his shoulders and leading him back to the bed.
"Firstly, you won't be able to work for shit if you can't even walk," Takashi said, hiding nothing. "And yes, my parents will probably kick you and me out if they found out about you. But the maids here are saints. They'll keep you alive out of the goodness in their hearts. I've always admired that," Takashi added casually. "Just eat whatever they give you and you'll be fine. The best you can do right now is to rest, as cliche as it sounds. You can't help your mom if you can't help yourself."
Takashi sat down on the chair near the bed once again, absentmindedly fiddling with the German book he had pulled out previously. "Let's play a game," he said wryly. "Tell me about your mom. Or your life, or you in general. For everything piece of significant information you tell me, you can ask me a question about my family, and I'll answer honestly if I can." He leaned back in his chair. "I may be the spawn of ruthless businesspeople, but I try to play fair."
Takashi stared at the small words of German in the novel he was holding in her hands, contemplating his decision before speaking once again. "Bonus points - if you somehow convince me that you're not just another poor kid, or just another kid with a sick parent out of the hundreds of millions of kids out there who are in the same situation, then maybe I'll feel tempted to help. No strings attached. Of course, if you're too proud to accept free help, that's your own decision."

Then Miyamoto is explaining his offer, and Jirou can feel the confusion showing on his face. Because why would Miyamoto, who truly seems like he couldn't care less - though even that is questionable, now that he's practically saved Jirou from dying in the cold - want to know jack shit about the personal life of someone his parents would kick him out for being friends with? Why the Hell would the guy risk himself for Jirou? xx
It doesn't matter though, does it? He may have ulterior motives, and if I have any idea what they are or not doesn't matter because he offered to help mom. That's all that matters. Who knows what'll happen to her... xx
"Okay then. You wanna know about my mom?" Jirou says, almost too quiet, still unsure. "Well...she was a nurse once upon a time. Which I guess makes it pretty ironic that she refused to acknowledge she was ill." A pause, a sigh. "She loves flowers, but forget-me-nots are her favorite. She has tons of clothes in that one really pale shade of pink." xx
Jirou pauses, picking at the skin peeling off his palm, trying to ignore the voice in his head telling him not to say these things, because what else can he talk about? There's nothing interesting about Jirou himself. xx
"When I was a kid she used to read me Disney princess stories because she didn't want me t o grow up in that 'boys can't love princesses' kind of mindset. And when I said I wanted to be the princess in my primary school play she went to my teacher and nagged him 'til i got the part." xx
"She's always kind, even when people aren't kind to her back, and I always resented that part of her, a little. She never stands up for herself, says she doesn't want to inconvenience anyone, as if she should give a shit about that. But she does. She conceived me and my brother all on her own because she thought it would be selfish of her to ask a lover to stay and have children by her side. Even if she deserves that." xx
Silence stretches, and Jirou tries to ignore the fact that he's about to tear up over a ridiculous chit-chat conversation, in front of Miyamoto. xx
"You said you'd answer a question if I told you about me. I think all that is more than enough to earn one question." Jirou says blandly. "So tell me, why would you risk your relationship with your family to help me?" xx

Takashi found it intriguing how Honda seemed to know such small, trivial things about his mother. Come to think of it, what is Angelina Kiefer's favorite flower? he mused. He didn't know. Does Mother even like flowers?
Honda continued to speak, unaware of Takashi's internal musings. "When I was a kid she used to read me Disney princess stories because she didn't want me to grow up in that 'boys can't love princesses' kind of mindset. And when I said I wanted to be the princess in my primary school play she went to my teacher and nagged him 'til i got the part. She's always kind, even when people aren't kind to her back, and I always resented that part of her, a little. She never stands up for herself, says she doesn't want to inconvenience anyone, as if she should give a shit about that. But she does. She conceived me and my brother all on her own because she thought it would be selfish of her to ask a lover to stay and have children by her side. Even if she deserves that."
Wow, Takashi thought to himself, if everyone had a mother like that, the world would certainly be a much better place.
"You said you'd answer a question if I told you about me. I think all that is more than enough to earn one question," Honda said, Takashi agreeing silently. "So tell me, why would you risk your relationship with your family to help me?"
That's a good question, Takashi admitted to himself.
"My relationship with my family is already weak as fuck," Takashi began, not completely sure on what he was going to say. ". . . The only thing that would get my father to become even the slightest bit supportive of me is to perhaps surpass everyone at school - unfortunately, we both know the likelihood of that ever happening. Even then, that's only a fraction of it. If I'm good enough, then maybe he'll let me become an intern at his company. I'll have to prove that I can make his company even more successful, prove that I can be a better CEO than him - I don't understand business at all compared to my sisters, and my father knows that. I think he already gave up on me - not helping you wouldn't have benefited our relationship anyways. Sometimes, I feel like the only reason he keeps me around is to beat me down so he can boost his problematic ego.
"My mother is in Germany right now. She doesn't give a shit about any of us. She only married my father for a business merger - that's painfully obvious to anyone. Everyone who works in, for, or with my father's company knows it. She hates kids because children are far too immature for her; the only reason why my mother had four kids is because the first three were girls and it's tradition for the heir of the family to be a male. She barely knows us, though. I remember how she forgot one of my sisters' name and called her by the wrong name for three months before we dared to tell her. She doesn't know how old we are, or when our birthdays are. In fact, I probably know you better than she knows me.
"My oldest sister, Rina, is already disappointed in me. But she holds little influence, so I don't give a damn about her relationship with me. My second oldest sister, Hikari - she's the one who had her name forgotten - doesn't care about the company, or what I do in my free time. The only person I respect enough to an extent that I would go out of my way to preserve our relationship is Aki, my other sister. She likes to act harsh and merciless in some sweetly sadistic way, but she's been so kind to me - she went out of her way to treat me like a normal little brother when she was never obligated to. If helping you meant that she'd be disappointed in me, I would never have done it. But she's aware of what I'm doing for you, and knowing her, this is far too trivial a matter for our relationship to be at risk over.
"As for why I'd help you in general - I'm going to be a bigger person and admit that I don't know completely. But I'm helping you anyway, so why should it matter?"
Takashi stopped speaking, before finally deciding to add, "your mother sounds like a beautiful person. The type of mother you'd find in one of those really happy fairy tales."

"As for why I'd help you in general - I'm going to be a bigger person and admit that I don't know completely. But I'm helping you anyway, so why should it matter?" He's right. I guess it really doesn't matter why. xx
If someone is being kind, they should be able to show their kindness without people like me trying to find some ulterior motive within them. xx
And that's what he's been trying to do. Ever since Miyamoto found him in that cafe and chased him down to give that intimidating speech in the middle of a crowded roadway, Jirou's been sitting around trying to figure out what on Earth Miyamoto's endgame was. What did he want to gain from all this? What he possibly gain in the first place? And now he realizes that perhaps Miyamoto didn't want anything from it at all. xx
Maybe he wasn't being coy and secretive when he said that following Jirou was just a matter of satsifying his curiosity. Maybe it was the truth. xx
"Your mother sounds like a beautiful person. The type of mother you'd find in one of those really happy fairy tales." Miyamoto adds, so softly. xx
Jirou can feel himself smiling at the image. "Y'know... she really was." xxx
"It's my turn again, isn't it?" Jirou says hurriedly, wanting to change the subject before he starts crying in front of Miyamoto. "There's honestly not a lot to me, so I doubt I'm going to convince you I'm not another sob story. If you look at the big picture, that's all I really am to anyone." xx
Shoving the memories of his mother out of his mind, Jirou continues. "I was in Track & Field last year, I don't think we were in the same class. I liked the exercise because it made me feel powerful, like I was in charge of my strength and could do anything at all. And to be honest, I liked the attention I got from it, too. People always cheering for me..." xx
"There was barely even a week between my brother dying and my mother being hospitalized. It was like my whole world came crashing down around me, and I could nothing to stop it. For the first time in my life, I felt utterly powerless. I stopped going to meets, stopped talking to the people around me, and eventually I quit Track & Field entirely." xx
"I've read stories about athletes who put everything into their workouts when something goes wrong, because that's the one thing they can control in life. But it wasn't like that for me. When my world went all to shit, I I didn't want to do anything but graduate. And that's been hard." xx
"I listen to every word in class and study into the wee hours of the morning, but nothing I do feels like enough. It might be, who knows." xxx
Jirou takes a moment to lament the fact that he's spilling all of this to Miyamoto Takashi, someone he never would have dreamed of being friends with before now, much less... whatever this was. It's real strange. xx
But somehow, it feels really fucking good to talk to someone about the shit he's been bottling up, 'cause God knows he can't go to his mother. xx
"And here I am, in your bed, wearing your clothes, unable to so much as take a piss without collapsing in a heap on the floor. Pathetic, eh?" xx
