Hazmat

Matthew Joseph Miller; Super Cop for the NYPD

0 · 248 views · located in Marvel Earth

a character in “United We Stand, Assembled We Fight”, as played by Sonata

Description

GENERAL INFORMATION

Image
Full Name: Matthew Joseph Miller

Monikers: Joe, Hazmat/Matt, Broseph (if you want to annoy him), and Super Cop.

Age: 27

Gender: Male

Race: Caucasian-American

Occupation: Works for the New York City Police Department (NYPD)

Orientation: Heterosexual

Religion: Christian

Personality: Hazmat is a fearless police officer, which also makes him reckless. He will take risks to make an arrest, and he isn’t the sort of guy to let a criminal get away. He is very determined, and simply, no joke. Any criminal that refuses to turn him/herself in will find the cop on their ass until he is stopped in some shape or form. Hazmat takes his job seriously, and he is an avid believer in upholding the peace.

On the other hand, he is easy to get along with. He has a sense of humor and he can show cockiness. He loves a nice cup of hot coffee and pastries to start his morning. His morning doesn’t begin until he’s had them. When situations get tense, Joe is the type of guy to crack a joke to lighten the mood. He is very reliable, and others tend to find his courage—although foolish—admirable. Hazmat has a never give up and never surrender attitude.

The officer is lenient on most criminals, but if anyone scratches his baby, ie. his car, they’re going down. When his car gets smashed, it’s a blow to his soul. The repairs not only come out of his stipend but his paycheck, and that makes him cry.

Psychological Disorders: Joe can sometimes feel aloof. He grew up with his grandparents and he believes his father disowned him. He never knew his mother but knows that she must have been an amazing woman for his father to feel so torn by her passing to get rid of his son. When it comes to others talking about their families, Joe feels indifferent. He doesn’t know how to respond, and he doesn’t like talking about his parents. Deep-down, he wishes he got the chance to meet his mother to apologize for having caused her such a misfortune.

Equipment

POWERS AND ABILITIES

Primary Power: Energy Conversion; Joe’s ability to absorb one form of energy and convert it into another form. There are multiple forms of energy that naturally exist, but Joe can only absorb one form at a time, and either A) harness it, B) convert it into a useful form of energy, or C) wield it as a weapon. When Joe absorbs a substantial amount of energy, the energy can be seen enveloping his body in the form of electricity, heat, light, or radiation as his nickname Hazmat was born from. Once Joe harnesses the energy, it can suit several purposes, such as if unleashed upon the ground, propel him through the air like a rocket, or if absorbed, it becomes a chemical and electrical energy that the body uses to repair afflicted tissue, kill harmful germs, bacteria, and viruses, and pretty much keep him at optimum health. This explains why Joe rarely takes sick-leave.

Secondary Power: Besides his primary power, Hazmat can sprint up to forty-five miles per hour (useful for chasing down criminals), is resistant to most small-power/small-arm weapons, and possesses a strength-class of Superhuman 25+ tons to 50 ton range.

Weapon(s): 9mm police-issued firearm, can of mace, riot baton, taser, and handcuffs. This also includes his trademark cop car. The vehicle is modified using Stark Tech. It contains the typical red and blue lamp, siren, and it can travel up to speeds of 300 mph on ground, and mach speeds in the air—yes, his vehicle can transform and take flight. The cop car comes with missile defense, mini-gun barrage, ejection, tail missile and smoke screen, and wings that can slice through another aircraft like blades through paper. The car is his child and comes with an AI guidance system named Alice.

Besides his police-issued gear and car, Hazmat is adept in self-defense. He isn’t anywhere near a Grand Master martial artist, but due to his police training, he has learned a bit of MMA. When chasing down criminals, he has also unintentionally picked up parkour.

Other Notes: Hazmat doesn’t naturally generate or produce the energy he uses. He absorbs it from the environment and he can only absorb one form of energy at a time. If he is currently wielding heat, then he is stuck with heat until he releases it back into the atmosphere. He cannot travel too far from a source of energy, say, if he is using electricity, then he cannot fly too high or away from the electrical source or he won’t have any energy to use. Hazmat is still experimenting with his powers to see what other energies he can absorb. The substantial use of his powers can put a dramatic strain on his body, resulting in him growing weakened or collapsing from hunger and exhaustion. The cop has natural human weaknesses and is always experimenting with his powers to see what other form of energy he can absorb.

When on the job, he tends not to show-off his powers if he can help it. The NYPD knows he’s a super cop, but they expect him to act like any normal officer would in the field. This is so he doesn’t discourage the other officers or even frighten them.

Background: Before Matthew Miller came to be, his father, Dean Miller, was a police officer working for the New York Police Department. On one assignment, he was to investigate an illegal shipment that was supposed to arrive in the harbor at midnight. During a gunfight with smugglers, Dean was pushed into a crate stack that near crushed him flat when it came down. After the smugglers escaped, Dean and his partner searched the cargo for illegal drugs and from the rubble of the shattered crates, Dean discovered a titanium suitcase. Upon opening it, he found an ecstatic object (possibly having been disturbed by the fall) that unleashed a bright flash before winking out of existence. The flash had dazed Dean and made him slightly nauseous and unaware of its true effects on his being. The FBI wasn’t too happy that he had “tampered with evidence,” and submitted him to several rounds of interrogations. Afterwards, SHIELD took over and Dean was further interrogated and was put through several physical and mental examinations, screening him for abnormal characteristics. When SHIELD was left dry, Dean was allowed to return home to his wife Charlotte Miller, unaware of the contamination he carried on his being.

It was passed onto Charlotte and during her pregnancy, she was horribly ill and the doctors were unable to figure out what was wrong, but suspected the growing infant inside her was making her sick. They predicted that whatever illness was affecting Charlotte would either deform the baby, kill it, kill her, or them both. Months later, when the baby was to be born, Charlotte died giving birth to a boy she named with her last words Matthew. Matthew was what the doctors thought to be a miracle for he came out to be a healthy baby boy; and though Dean was relieved to hear of Matthew’s well-being, he was devastated upon learning of Charlotte’s passing.

Dean retired from the NYPD to take care of Matthew, and as he grew, the relationship between him and his father was cold. Dean blames Matthew for Charlotte’s death and has raised him, knowing that Charlotte would have wanted him too. Dean hadn’t noticed Matthew’s unusual talents until a vengeful convict known as The Brutalizer was released from prison. The Brutalizer tracked down Dean’s residence and broke in, wielding his trademark bat wrapped in barbwire. Dean and The Brutalizer got into a scuffle, and a worried Matthew came downstairs. Upon seeing the brute of a man about to smash his father’s head in with a bat, Matthew held out his hands and the electricity in the room began to flicker until electric chains shot from his hands to electrocute the criminal. The Brutalizer collapsed to the floor smoking and in a spastic fit. The Millers were without power for a few days, and during those days, Dean was arranging to have Matthew live with his grandparents.

Due to his Christian beliefs, Dean believed that Matthew was a hell spawn that had taken the life of his wife. Dean dumped Matthew off at his grandparents, and since then, Matthew hasn’t seen his father in seventeen-years. His grandparents gave him the love and life he deserved and he was able to go to New York University. He got accepted into the School of Law and got his degree in Criminal Justice.

The incident where his father was nearly killed was his motivation to become a police officer and to keep bad guys like The Brutalizer behind bars.

A Bugatti pulled up to the police line as a dark-haired officer popped open the door and quickly stepped out. He closed it before striding toward a female officer who was kneeling behind the safety of her car door.

“Miller, where the hell were you?” she asked irritably.

The officer grasped the lip of his police cap and raised it up to give air to his crown before he adjusted it. He didn’t know how to answer her question. He simply was late, which didn’t happen on a regular basis. Actually, it hadn’t ever happened until today.

“What’s the current situation?” Matthew questioned in his attempt to change the subject. There were more important matters.

“A strange girl went inside the bank and murdered all the robbers.”

A brown brow lifted above the rim of his black shades.

“Here she comes now!”

Hazmat watched SWAT swarm the girl, who continued to saunter toward them. She was unarmed, but if she had murdered the bank robbers that had been holding the place hostage—by herself—she was no one to underestimate. Matthew crossed his arms before his chest. He didn’t think SWAT would shoot an unarmed person, but they wouldn’t let her escape either. If she wound up being a major problem, he was there to take care of it. Hazmat wasn’t going to let her escape either.

The cop winced as he watched the SWAT resort to tasing. They didn’t seem to care if the criminal was a man, woman, or child, they took her down with similar respects.

“Man that looked like it sucked,” Hazmat said.

“And maybe this wouldn’t have happened if you had shown up on time,” the female officer teased.

Officer Maryanne Cassidy was her name and she and Officer Miller were acquainted to put it innocently.

Hazmat flashed a grin at her and held out his hands as he replied jokingly, “What? Does everyone think I’m a super hero all of a sudden?”

Officer Cassidy’s pink lips twisted into a sultry smirk. “I just know you would have handled it better. Maybe none of this would have happened.”

“Maybe
” Hazmat replied with a serious air. “If that strange chick came outta nowhere while I was dealin’ with the situation, I don’t know what I’d do.” His hand rose to soothingly rub the back of his neck as he imagined the situation playing out differently. “She killed criminals who could have just as easily murdered those hostages, and they weren’t given the chance to. By law, she’s a murderer, but realistically, I guess she’s a hero.”

Officer Cassidy holstered her pistol and secured the strap. “I’m goin’ to lunch. Don’t you have similar break hours as me?”

“Yes, ma’am I do.”

She smirked again at his formalities. “I was thinkin’ Subway.”

Hazmat made a childish face. His nose wrinkled and his brows knitted in his disgust. “Ya know, I’ve hit that place up so many times that I don’t think I could eat a sub sandwich even if it was my last meal on Earth. How ‘bout we head to China Town and get some Thai?”

Officer Cassidy glanced haphazardly to the side for a moment as she mused on the choice. “I don’t think I’ve had Thai in years.”

“Just stick to the Pad Thai if you’re unsure. It’s the safest option. See ya there, don’t stand me up.”

The red-headed officer sauntered over to her vehicle as she replied, “Stand you up? I think it’s you stand me up. I know how you go runnin’ after every civilian that throws a can on the ground.”

“You know it!”

Ugh, he sounded so proud of it, Officer Cassidy mentally groaned. “See ya there.”

Pongsri Thai Restaurant, on Baxter & St. Mulberry 12:00PM

The two officers were sitting in a booth along the restaurant walls. Matt was facing the café windows; the light of the noon sun pouring in to highlight the lush-green, vegetation décor, burnished wooden interior, and the brass elephant statues that seemed to walk the place in still-life.

Steam rose in a white pillar into the air above their booth as Officer Cassidy sat in silence and fascination as she watched her partner’s appetite at work. Her chicken and coconut milk soup and chicken pad thai were untouched as her jade eyes watched Hazmat grasp with chopsticks a steamed, vegetarian spring roll, dip it in peanut sauce, and devour it in two bites. He then gathered a lock of noodles that he raised to his mouth as though to join it with the flavor of the spring roll and slurped up the hair-like tendrils before sitting back in his chair with a glass of Thai ice tea to wash it all down with.

“I’m not a vegetarian obviously, but those spring rolls are just awesome. You should try some,” Matt offered.

Officer Cassidy glanced to the empty saucer dish, and then back to the other officer. “I would have, but you ate them all.”

Lowering his glass, Matt glanced to the saucer dish in disbelief, and then blushed in his embarrassment.

“Sorry; we can just order some more,” he sheepishly reasoned.

“Where does it all go?”

Matt smiled with playful arrogance as he answered, “To a good place. Why do you think I’m so strong?”

“Gym. You eat like a fat ass, and I’m surprised you’re not one of the deputies huffing and wheezing as you chase down thugs.”

That was right. Officer Cassidy had just transferred last month, and she didn’t know him beyond his humanity.

“Yes. You’re right. The gym
and nothin’ slows me down.”

“Not even 1000 calories?”

“It’s just fuel for the fire baby.”

It took great discipline not to violate PDA (Public Display of Affection). Officer Cassidy was a smoking-hot officer and her personality was one of his three favorite types: laid-back, down-to-earth, with a sense of humor. If he had met her somewhere out of uniform, he would have taken her out on a date. Technically, this was the closest date he’ll ever have with her.

Officer Cassidy rolled her eyes as a smirk twisted her lips.

Just then, a report crackled from the black radio perched on the table. Officer Cassidy observed how Hazmat’s expression became tense and serious as they listened about a disturbance at a cafĂ©. He grabbed his napkin, wiped his face, and would have stole from the booth if she hadn’t put her leg up. Matt scooted right into her ankle and then glanced to the red-headed officer with a shrewd gaze as though she were getting in the way of his dreams.

Officer Cassidy’s thin, red brows rose in surprise to have received such an expression as she enlightened, “You’re not about to leave a lady with the bill are you? Also, did it occur to you that we’re on break? It’s just a disturbance. If it’s anythin’ serious, then they’ll let us know. Relax, Miller. The city isn’t burnin’ down.”

Hazmat’s expression softened as he scooted back to his original spot. “Man, I’m just screwin’ up today. You know, I wouldn’t have-”

Officer Cassidy’s eyes glimmered in disbelief as she slurped long and hard to mute the bullshit that was about to slip from Matthew’s lips. They both knew he would have ditched her at the restaurant without a second thought about it. Hell, he might not have recalled what he had done until the situation was handled and over.

“So
spring rolls?” Hazmat questioned, changing the subject.

Matthew had long finished his meal and was watching Officer Cassidy eat, trying to hide the fact that he was actually counting the minutes until their break was over. The radio had been going crazy, and as much as he wanted to believe that there were other officers besides him on the force that could handle most problems, there weren’t. He was unique.

convict was identified to be The Shocker. All units are in pursuit
Baxter & St. Mulberry

Hazmat’s brown eyes darted from the radio to the cafĂ© windows to see a police car flying right towards them.

“Get down!” he alerted.

Both he and Officer Cassidy slid under the table of their booth as the café window shattered, sending flying glass and shrapnel clattering overhead. While crouched beneath the table, Matthew raised his wristwatch before his eyes and grinned almost wickedly.

“Looks like breaks over,” he informed.

Rolling out from the booth, he grabbed his hat from the rung of his pants and secured it on his head. He then charged out of the restaurant past the car and leaping out the gaping window.

“Miller!” Officer Cassidy called as she gingerly crawled out from under the table. “That’s The Shocker!”

They would need backup to handle such a supervillain.

The Shocker lowered his hands as he overheard someone shout surrender over his shoulder. He slowly turned his head, setting a single white eye on some plain-Jane girl. Who knows what was going through her head? For all he knew, she must have lost it if she thought she could take him on.

“Princess, Spiderman ain’t ‘round no more, so he won’t save you from bein’ blast to pieces if you decide to get in my way,” The Shocker threatened.

“That maybe true, and as much as I miss seein’ Spiderman swingin’ around and kickin’ your ass, I’m sure I’ll make it look better,” came another voice.

The Shocker’s attention went from Jane to the cop that was standing five yards away from him with his gun drawn on him.

“Another cop?” The Shocker queried almost boredly. He then glanced to the unconscious officers already folded about the street, having already received a taste of his gauntlets. He laughed at Hazmat condescendingly. “Ah’m gonna scatter you ‘cross this street.”

Matthew happened to notice a familiar criminal not standing too far away from The Shocker. Hadn’t he seen her just get taken away? His brows rose in surprise to think that she had escaped. So she hadn’t been a common criminal. She was just as dangerous as The Shocker.

“Halt! Put your hands behind your head!” Officer Cassidy ordered.

The Shocker glanced from Miller to Officer Cassidy and slowly began to fold his arms behind his head. His left hand was above his right and as his gauntlets roared, a white blast of vibrated air particles shot in Officer Cassidy’s direction. The female officer dove to the side as it connected with a lone police car. Unfortunately, the police car happened to be Hazmat’s Bugatti.

At that moment, it felt like he was on a PCP trip. The sounds of distant police sirens sank into low, contorted blares as Hazmat watched his baby fly off the curb and go flipping through the air. The driver’s side door had a big dent in it as though another car had smashed into it, and it wasn’t over.

SMASH!

The car landed on its back, the red, white, and blue lamps completely crushed and the windows shattered. Where was he? Who was he? What the hell just happened? It looked like his car had just got wrecked. Matthew glanced at the blank spot where it had once been, and then at the totaled vehicle on its back on the sidewalk.

“Miller!”

Officer Cassidy’s cry of warning entered his ears just as a concussive blast struck him in the gut. A harsh gasp left his lips as he was thrown across the street. He then struck the ground and went rolling across the asphalt to become another addition to Schultz’s collage of downed officers. Hazmat, however, was completely conscious. He coughed a few times as his brown eyes, shrunk in his disbelief, and in shock gazed back into his mind at the Bugatti that was being wrecked over and over again. He wasn’t even sure his insurance would cover it or even if the NYPD would. The car was expensive, and no one was rich during this financial crisis.

The Shocker chuckled as he pointed his left hand at Jane. He hadn’t forgotten about that cocky bitch.

“Shows over!” he informed as another blast roared from his gauntlets, similar to the last two that had been displayed, shot in her direction.

Officer Cassidy was horrified to see her partner get blasted and thrown across the asphalt. She quickly dashed from the sidewalk between two parallel-parked cars into the street where she knelt at his side, her hands upon his abdomen where she noticed bits of his shirt were torn unveiling the Kevlar vest beneath. Could the vest have absorbed the impact of the shock? In actuality, it had been Hazmat’s durability. The hum of The Shocker’s gauntlets put the female officer on alert as she immediately glanced to The Shocker to watch him blast an innocent civilian—so it first appeared. To see the girl’s chest implode enlightened her to how dangerous The Shocker’s weapons really were.

Hazmat had come out of his internal-grieving condition. He had raised his head to watch The Shocker blast that girl from before. His eyes couldn’t get any wider to see her murdered in cold-blood. He might have said, Karma’s a bitch at that moment, but this was no laughing matter. The Shocker was serious and he needed to be too.

“Stand back,” Matthew warned Officer Cassidy who quickly glanced in his direction. She hadn’t expected her partner to recover so soon.

“Miller, he’s dangerous,” she warned.

Frowning sternly, Hazmat removed his police cap and his badge. He dumped his badge into the hat and tossed it to the ground at his feet.

“I’ll be fine. He won’t,” Hazmat told her.

The Shocker had been observing the effects of his gauntlets at such close proximity. The girl’s death had been unintentional for an assassin/thief of his caliber didn’t go around killing little girls. His attention returned forward as he now noticed the cop was facing him in a showdown.

“Yer duelin’ against the wrong outlaw,” The Shocker growled. He was feeling a little unnerved to see that the cop he thought he had gotten rid of was standing before him unharmed.

“Shocker, huh? I’ll show you shocking,” Hazmat said.

He spread his feet shoulder-width apart and diagonally held out his arms to his left and right. His fingers splayed as thin, spidery branches extended from the dormant lamp posts to his fingers. The hair-like charge gradually thickened as it flickered along his knuckles and down to his wrists. Hazmat was trying to keep his breathing calm as he worked his powers. It had been a long time since he had the opportunity use it, and he felt a little nervous that he may not be too familiar with how he used to use it.

Come on, this is taking too long. You just have to do it. Do it! his conscience cheered.

Tensing up, Hazmat suddenly crossed his arms as he reached out with his ability and began soaking in like a sponge all the electricity within the vicinity. Television sets and computers flickered off, laptop batteries were quickly drained, and the hoods of the cars parallel parked around him popped open as the batteries began spewing forth energy. Officer Cassidy backed away from her partner squinting. She raised her hand to veil her eyes from his flickering form and jumped when a rope of electricity shot from a vehicle behind her to latch onto Hazmat’s form. Strings of electricity flickered around Hazmat like a web as he uncrossed his arms and boldly straightened in his stature with his fists clenched at his side.

The officer was pure white and flickering brilliantly. He appeared made of electricity as it wrapped and embraced him like a body suit.

“Draw,” Hazmat said gruffly.

The Shocker was disturbed to see that there was another New York super hero he would have to deal with. He had never seen him around when Spiderman ruled the city. So who the hell was he? No matter. He was going to test the strength of his gauntlets against this power house. He wasn’t going to hold back. His gauntlets would either rip this hero to pieces or put him in the electric chair. Thrusting his fists forward, an electric-blue beam shot from them toward the officer as Hazmat thrust his own hands forward to expel the absorbed energy. The two attacks collided, the friction of the two powers causing the asphalt to melt where the collision currently was.

The two supers were deadlocked—for the moment. The Shocker could probably go all day because of the device he was using would do all the work. Hazmat had stamina, and if he didn’t overwhelm the villain soon, he was going to get winded and then obliterated by his attack.

The Shocker was completely focused on overwhelming the cop. He could feel the vibrations rippling through his muscles as his gauntlets roared on at Level 5. It was when hands settled on his shoulders that Shultz’s snapped his head over his shoulder and was stunned to see that the girl he thought he had killed was on her feet.

“You-!”

He barely got a chance to utter before he was slammed upon the asphalt. If it hadn’t been for the durable, padding of his suit, he might have suffered paralysis. Hazmat felt the tension give, his beam of concentrated electricity had shot forward freely. His arms parted, his palms turned inward as he began absorbing the energy again. His attack hadn’t been to kill like The Shocker’s but to incapacitate. The beam retracted, widening before it broke into the haphazard branches that began clinging to every metallic source in the vicinity.

Hazmat had to concentrate on releasing the electricity back carefully. Turning his wrists to have his hands point outwards towards the lamp posts again, he charged the lamp posts and the batteries of the vehicles around him. Arching electrical bridges appeared over cars and crackled along the street. Slowly, Hazmat’s original form was coming into view as he continued to disperse his powers. Thrusting his hands downward, he rose a few feet off the ground as the final wave of electrical energy went dancing in chains across the asphalt.

Dropping to one knee, Hazmat was panting as though he had run a marathon. His clothes were smoking, having been burnt in several places, and his brown hair was standing on end from static. Weakly, he glanced down the street to see The Shocker on his back and that girl he thought was dead. Had she stopped him?

“You’re dead,” Matthew spoke between breaths. “I saw you. How are you still alive?”

He settled onto his rump, bowing his head to continue catching his breath as his arm rested upon his knee.

Officer Cassidy was up against the restaurant wall and gazing in awe at Hazmat and the girl. How was that girl still alive? She saw The Shocker kill her with her own eyes. Slowly, she moved away from the wall after she saw the chains of electricity fizzle out of existence. She cautiously approached the exhausted officer and when she stood only a foot away, she didn’t know what to say. Never would she have thought he was a super.

Hazmat didn’t look at her as he kept his brown eyes downrange at Jane and The Shocker. He wanted to believe that she had saved him the trouble or saved him period, but she was a killer. He didn’t know what her business was with The Shocker. So far, she had been present around two crime scenes and here she was an escaped detainee.

“What are you and what do you want? Seriously, what’s your deal? You’re a murderer, an escapee, and I don’t even know what this is,” he said waving his hand to the whole big mystery of why she was here and why she had gotten involved. The police had already tried taking her to jail once and it didn’t seem to work. If he had to take her in, he would, and hopefully, he didn’t have to risk the life of Officer Cassidy to do it.

A news chopper was flying overhead and civilians were watching from the windows of stores, hotels, and apartments the battle that had been in the street. Flashing red and blue lights were making their way down the road in mass. Her radio had been jammed earlier during the electrical storm, but apparently, Officer Cassidy’s message managed to get through to dispatch.

Jane carefully studied as the electrical current began to arc backwards, its path seemingly under control as it was brought towards the hero who she could not identify. Jane did not move as she watched the control over electricity, and the precision that was involved in harmlessly releasing the current into nearby devices. Her eyes did not seem to convey any emotional reaction, and despite the fact that her body had just finished sealing her external wounds, she did not seem to be in any visible pain.

Jane leaned forward slightly as she spit out a mouthful of blood, already coagulated it came out as an amorphous blob that she spit onto the pavement. She dabbed her lips with her fingers, a senseless gesture given the amount of gore on her body. She slowly leaned down on one knee while looking at the officer and reached to place a hand on the shocker's chest. She then slowly rose back to her feet.

Jane tilted her head slightly and opened her lips to draw in a breath, the officer had asked her a question, it seemed appropriate to answer him. "Reassemblage takes a few moments. Restoration of bio-matter should not be foreign to you. There have been several prolific public figures who have displayed this capability." She looked around at the damage to the area, it was fortunate that the conflict did not escalate further.

What are you, the question caused her to pause for a few moments and contemplate her own existence. What exactly was she? She did not think she was machine, because she was almost entirely organic materials, yet she would not immediately refer to herself as a person either, this did not currently seem to be true. Despite the confusion the question brought to her mind, she still began to approach the man asking her.

"I do not have an answer as to what I am. My want is apparently more difficult than I had anticipated. I need to develop a reputation as a Hero so that high profile individuals will attempt to contact me." She thought about his accusation, "I believe that I acted within the regards of self defense. There was an immediate danger to myself an others, perhaps I did not understand the concept correctly. However I did indeed escape from the police, I cannot allow myself capture at this time.

She took a look back at the Shocker for a moment, "If you would like to disable his devices, I am not familiar with them. It would be unfortunate for him to make an escape." Her eyes came back to Hazmat as she stopped walking a few feet back from him. She was unsure what he might do, but she did not raise her guard and her hands lay peacefully at her sides. "If there is need for you to pursue me, I will wait until you have secured this man before I make my attempt at escape." Her expression continued to be flat, with little emotion displayed.

Matthew stretched out to grasp his hat off the ground. He ran his right hand back through his brown hair to smooth it down before he removed his badge and set his cap upon his head. The whole time, there was a scowl on his face. He didn’t like the idea of not arresting a criminal. Reassemblage, bio-matter, hero
huh. She sounded crazy.

Officer Cassidy had her pistol trained upon Jane as she approached her and the other officer. Resting a hand upon his knee, with a soft and almost lazy groan, Matthew stood to his feet and pinned his badge back onto
what was left of his shirt. There were black, crispy holes in the blues and greys of his attire. Self-defense

Matthew glanced at the unconscious form of The Shocker and then at the emotionless girl standing before him. The longer he stared, the more he felt creeped out. She was like one of those glass dolls that only crazy women collected and thought were adorable. The cop had too much pride, and he remained silent as he decided to march past Jane to The Shocker. She said she would escape and since she had done it before, he didn’t doubt her claim.

He unbuckled one of the leather compartments on his belt and removed the handcuffs. He locked them about The Shocker’s wrists and then forcefully removed the gauntlets from his hands. If they had been attached to his suit, well, they weren’t anymore.

A few minutes before the cavalry would arrive, Matthew spoke loudly over his shoulder, “You might want to leave. My friends won’t be too happy to see you, and if you have no intention to surrender peacefully, then I rather not be arsed in tryin’ to catch you in front of them.”

Officer Cassidy lowered her pistol away from Jane, regarding the girl in confusion. So much had happened in the past thirty minutes. She felt lost on how to react to the situation. She had just seen a dead girl revive and Miller light up like some science project. She didn’t even know if she knew him anymore. Was he the same man she had lunch with or was that all a big show?

The police pulled up in half a ring before Hazmat and the unconscious Shocker. Chief of Police, David McNeil sprouted from a police vehicle along with other officers who immediately rushed toward Officer Miller and Officer Cassidy.

A young, black officer named Sean gazed in awe at Hazmat and his charred police uniform. “What the hell happened to you?”

Hazmat uncomfortably scratched at the corner of his right sideburn as he answered, “Long story.”

“Wow, you caught The Shocker by yourself?”

It bothered Matthew to have to take credit that wasn’t entirely his. That strange, escaped prisoner and serial killer had helped him, but he couldn’t mention her not without becoming her accomplice. “Officer Cassidy helped too.”

Sean glanced to Officer Cassidy who slowly nodded—she was still lost for words.

Chief McNeil crossed the distance in his black, long coat and waved his hand dismissively at the new recruit.

“That’s enough of your questions. Let’s get this criminal behind bars ASAP.”

Two officers, including Sean, stooped down to heft and drag The Shocker toward a police car, while a third confiscated his gauntlets. The chief then set his hand on Hazmat’s shoulder and asked, “Can I speak with you for a moment?”

Oh lord
here it comes. Hazmat just walked with the chief over to his ruined vehicle. It made him ache to see it again. The chief released his shoulder and continued, “Now before you go tellin’ anybody else. What exactly happened here? And look at you, you look like a firefighter. You used your powers didn’t you? I know The Shocker is called The Shocker and all, but he’s a different kind of shock. You better make sure you tell me everything because if I see this anywhere on Youtube, I’m gonna be on your ass Miller!”

Hazmat smiled nervously and explained, “I might have used my powers a li-” He had raised his right hand, emphasizing what he would have meant by “a little” by pinching the air between his index finger and thumb; but the chief had given him the stink eye. “l~lot
okay, this part of the city was lit like Christmas, but I had no choice. He had kil-erm
he had tried to kill Officer Cassidy.” He then threw his hands in the direction of his car. “He wrecked my car. Look at this? Do you know how much this is gonna cost me? I can’t afford this! I nearly spent my life buyin’ the damn thing and havin’ it modified into a police car.”

Chief McNiel’s brown brows furrowed. If he had used his powers in the way that he described, then the whole world must have seen him. He turned his attention away from Miller to sweep the windows of the apartment complex. He saw glowing in the window a cell phone that some kid must have been recording the whole thing on. His nose wrinkled angrily before he asked, “I noticed we lost our radio for a few minutes. Do you think it was because of your powers? If we lost radio, then your ability could have acted like an EMP for all electronics in the area, which means the chances of anyone recording your fight is impossible?”

Matthew stared at the chief stupidly for a few seconds—brows raised and eyes wide. He had no idea. All he knew was that he had the ability to absorb different forms of energy, but beyond that he didn’t know what the externalities were. His hat tilted forward a little as he scratched the back of his head.

“Yeah
” he said dubiously.

The chief glanced to Officer Cassidy who was looking a little spacey.

“How is Officer Cassidy taking this?”

Matthew dropped his hand and glanced to the female officer who was watching the rest of the crew setting up police tape. Her hands were clinching her biceps as though she were holding herself. She seemed slightly unsettled.

“I’ll have to talk to her about it.” It wasn’t like she was his partner.

“You do that, and
” the chief sighed. “We’ll see what we can do about your car. You just keep your mouth shut to anyone else about this. This includes the press if they get in your face. You be sure to tell Officer Cassidy the same.”

“Will do, Sir,” Hazmat replied. If the NYPD was planning to handle his expenses, then that put him in a better mood.

Once the chief strode away, Hazmat walked over to Officer Cassidy. How was he going to do this?

“Hey, we need to talk,” he began.

Officer Cassidy faced Officer Miller with a chatisizing demeanor all of a sudden. She didn’t look like the lost and confused belle she had a second ago.

“When were you gonna tell me?” she asked.

Matthew arched a brow at her. “What? When? Never if I could help it.”

Officer Cassidy frowned. “So this whole time I would have never known that I was eating lunch with a super man?”

“Hey, I’m nowhere near comparable to that guy. The chief doesn’t want me usin’ my powers because it may draw negative attention to the NYPD and discourage the other officers.”

“Negative attention? I think it’s great that the NYPD has a leg up on all these super villains. Do you know how tiring it is to show up at a crime scene only to be considered cannon fodder for the super hero handling the situation? We were always the cleanup crew, but now we have a super cop” she playfully emphasized.

“Keep your voice down. I’m not a super cop. I’m just your typical defender of the peace.”

Officer Cassidy rolled her eyes. “And I’m Wonder Woman.”

“Can we not talk about this anymore? I need to find that girl.”

“Did you tell the chief about her?”

“Of course not. If he knew we let her go, he would have our badges.”

“And what are you gonn do when you find her? You can’t arrest her because she said she would escape.”

Hazmat scowled in frustration. “I don’t know. I guess I just want her in my sights at all times. I can’t have her goin’ around killin’ whomever she pleases. I want to learn what she’s all about and see if there’s any way she can get some sort of help. She couldn’t have gotten far unless she has some sort of super speed.”

“You can take my car.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah, just don’t wreck it like yours.”

“I didn’t wreck it. He blew my baby up!”

Officer Cassidy smirked. He always got so touchy when people mentioned his car. The female officer removed her keys and handed it to him. She then turned to help with the clean up.

Rolling her keys in his hand, Hazmat watched Officer Cassidy saunter away and asked, “Hey, when do you get off?”

She turned a green eye over her shoulder. “When you do.”

“You want to have dinner later?”

“Sure. Call me.”

“Will do!”

Hazmat grinned egotistically. She made him feel like a pro at this. Tossing the keys up, he caught them in his hand and set out to search for that Jane Doe.

It didn’t take Hazmat too long to locate the mysterious Jane Doe just on the outskirts of China Town. She not only looked like an evil doll, but she was sitting on the dirty sidewalk like a bum when there were plenty of benches. The cop car pulled up to the sidewalk, and Hazmat reached over to the passenger door and opened it. Gazing sternly at the killer, Hazmat grabbed the speaker and spoke on the loud speaker, “Get in the car.”

He wasn’t going to tell her twice.
