a character in “V.I.R.T.U.A.L 2”, as played by ArcticFox

Description

Real life appearance: She needs glasses to see, but since she doesn't like them she wears contacts which she special orders to be the amber color you see in the picture. No one knows what her real hair color is since she keeps dyeing it, this semester it just so happens to be pink. Other than that she usually seems to have either a sad look that when questioned she will brush it off as nothing or a thoughtful look.

Name: Kristy Henderson
Age: 16
Grade: 11
Personality: Out in the real world she is very shy and mainly keeps to herself and doesn't like to burden others with her personal probems. Because of this she has become a sort of unofficial peer councilor, she listens to her peers problems without judging them and gives them whatever information or advice they need or just stays silent. Her advice is usually very reliable and once her peers are done with her she fades back into the background, forgotten by her peers until they need her again, which is fine by her. In the game she is much more open and will just let loose all of her frustrations there. She is independent and can be strong-willed and is not afraid to be the center of attention or do something that might be considered embaressing or extreme because no one knows who she really is, it is a safe zone for her. She is however very protective of her true identity and won't tell anyone who she really is, parinoid that if someone were to find out that they would be disappointed with what they found. This doesn't change the fact that no matter which world she's in she's always kind, caring, protective, and loves animals.
Crush?: None at the moment

Virtual
Character Appearance: She has jade green eyes with slit pupils. Her canines elongate to sharp fangs and her nails grow to become claws whenever she engages in battle.
Image
Character Name: SilverMinnow
Character Class: Beast Master
Character Level: 30

History: Her parents have been absent from her life for the most part so it was left up to her to take care of her younger brother, Daniel, and herself. She was given a credit card when she turned 12 and was told to keep a budget for food and given restrictions on how much they could spend for clothes. Along with this they were told that if they wanted anything extra that they'd have to buy it themselves. It was at this time that Kristy had started building her computer and diving into the net, becoming an A-class hacker. She finished her computer two years later, with the money she earned working at an animal shelter where she took care of animals, trained them, and rehabilitated them to human contact. However she is always on the lookout for new tech so that she can upgrade her system. Recently she helped Esme get out of her abusive life and blackmailed her parents into adopting her so that they'd be her legal guardians, but allowed her to keep her last name. They share a room with her on the bottom bunk with her computer and other electronics set on the shelf on the inside of the bed, while Esme's took over her desk which she'd taken the liberty of upgrading and rewiring so that it'd work to a normal standard which was the best that she could do and let's her decorate the room however she wants. She also got Esme the kitten that she'd promised and helps her take care of it (the picture features a fully grown ragdoll cat, but just imagine it in a smaller form and you have a kitten). At the moment she's debating whether or not to tell Esme that she is a hacker and that she even plays Trivula Fantasy and her screen name is SilverMinnow, so far she is her closest real world friend and she hates lying to her about what she does on the computer all the time.

So begins...

"...sty... Krist... Kristy," a voice called out to her from above.

Groaning she opened her eyes and looked up to see her boss standing over her, which had her confused as she thought that she was at home. Looking around she noticed that she'd stayed the night at the animal shelter and as her memory cleared she remembered that it'd been because one of the dogs needed an injection every other hour. The dog was new to the selter and had just come from an abusive home, and since she had the most experience with abused animals she was chosen to stay the night. She'd texted Esme right then, but she doubted that she would get it until she was already at school and wondering where she was. "Gomen, sensei," she apologized sleepily as she streched and her cell alarm went off again signaling that it was time for the next dose.

"It's fine Kristy-chan, just finish up with this last dose and you can go, do you need a ride?" he asked as he handed her the syrige.

"Arigato, I would greatly appreciate it, I am already running late for school," she accepted as she gave the dog the injection and walked out of the kennel, making sure to securly close the big chainlink gate behind her.

She then disposed of the needle in the hazard waste bin and followed her boss to his car and got in. The drive to her house was quiet and when they arrived she rushed in, took a quick shower, brushed her hair and teeth and put on her uniform before going down to the kitchen to grab her bento out of the fridge and rushed out the car which was just pulling up again. She took the store bought bento from her boss and put it in her bookbag then took the sweet roll offered to her and ate it. By the time she was done they had pulled up in front of her school after she got out she bowed to her boss in respect and closed the door before running into the school and rushing to her class. Opening the door quietly to class 2-b she slipped in as a girl named Sana was introduced as she found an open seat which happened to be on the other side of the classroom from Esme.

Feeling relief at not being noticed by the teacher she was glad that she wasn't called on but with the way that thing were going it looked like it was inevitable that she'd have to speak in front of the class. Turning to her only friend she saw that seemed kind of anxious which she knew could only mean one thing. Once she caught Esme's eye she mimed texting on a cell to explain where she was last night before turning her attenion back to the teacher. The text that she'd sent the night before read: I have to stay over at the shelter tonight to give this new dog some injections but I'll be in school tomorrow.

Feeling her cell vibrate she opened it and read the message before closing it and turning her attention back to class. Once the bell rang she slowly gathered her things waiting for Esme to approach. "Yes," she answered both questions with one word. Since she'd come to live with her and her family she'd become more inclined to speak more but when she was bothered by something or if something was on her mind she reverted back to simple answers. At the moment her thoughts were once again debating the pros and cons of telling Esme her secret of being a hacker and playing Trivula Fantasy.

There, she did it again. Kristy knew that it was uintentional and that she had no way of knowing it but when she said things like that it made her feel guity. It was like she was worse than her parents, not only did she stay overnight at work but she was also decieving her best and only friend. She remembered when she used to look forward and cherished the times when her parents were home too, but as time went on and it became more and more rare and she was faced with broken promises and disappointment from them she gave up on them. If there was anything in the world that she didn't want it was for Esme to be disappointed in her and to feel betrayed by her. Taking her things in hand quickly she made a split second decision as she rushed to catch up and grabbed a hold of Esme's hand to stop her, at that moment the realization of what she was about to do crashed down on her making her more nervous than usual. Mentally shaking her head of her doubt she decided to stand firm by her decision as she started to force the words out. "I'm sorry about leaving you alone at the house, I know how much you hate it, I promise to talk to my boss about putting more trainers on the last shift so it doesn't happen again," Kisty promised, chickening out at the last second and when she noticed what she did she began to mentally scold herself.

She didn't seem to think that anything was off about her and for that she was greatful. "How about at the usual spot underneath the sakura tree closest to the main gate?" Kristy suggested with a tired grin, having not had enough sleep the night before as she let go ready to go to her next class.

Kisty smiled at the easy agreement from her friend and as soon as she left her she too left for her own class on the the advanced floor. As soon as school let out she gathered her things and made her way to the sakura tree eager to go home. "Esme-chan, how was your day?" she questioned as soon as she was next to her friend.

"Good luck with that," she sighed sympatheticly as they started on their way home. At the mention of the game her smile froze on her face anticipating the question that always followed such a statement. Kristy thought about telling her about the fact that she was already playing the game once more but then mentally shook her head knowing that she'd given more than enough hints on the game that she was a hacker. So in all if she told about one thing she would also have to tell about the other and she didn't want Esme to get in trouble as well if she were ever caught. "Well you have fun with that, I think I'll make some onigiri for dinner later then call my brother to see if he's going to be staying over at a friend's house again tonight," she informed her.

Having just put the rice in the pot to boil se heard aTHUD from upstairs. "Esme-chan!" she called, when she didn't get a response she called again this time louder "Esme-chan are you alright!"

This time when she was met with silence Kristy began to worry and ran up the stairs all the while calling Esme's name. When she finally made it to their room she found her laying on the ground with her headset still on. Rushing to her side she removed the headset fearing for the worst and when she finally saw it she was filled with devistation. She'd heard rumors of this going on, and in response she'd been working on the security every day in order to keep the two of them safe from this. This was something that she had no idea where to even begin in order to fix, the only thing that she could think of was to sit her body upright and replace the headset and game control.

When she was done she ran back downstairs and turned off the rice then went back up to log onto Trivula Fantasy to see if her avatar was still active. She jumped onto her bed, booted up her computer and placed her headset on. Diving onto the net she was able to move more freely and just slip into the game in the form of her avatar SilverMinnow.

Searching the game fratically she was relieved when she located Heartwings and immediatly moved in that direction. Before she entered the area she scanned it for other people. When it came back empty she rushed forward and wrapped her arms around Heartwings greatful that she seemed alright even though she knew that she wasn't. "Oh, I so sorry... I should've told you... I'm so sorry... I should've told you... I should've told you... This is all my fault..." she cried guiltily.

"My avatar name is SilverMinnow but my real name is Kristy Henderson, I've been playing this game since the day before you came to live with me. I am a class A hacker, I thought that all of the firewalls that I put in place would be sufficiant to keep you safe. I'd heard rumors of this happening but I thought that what I did was enough and I was constantly updating them, I swear I was going to tell you everything I never meant for you to out like this," SilverMinnow cried her confession to her best friend, tears of regret and guilt rolling down her face not daring to look up as she tightened her grip. She didn't know what to expect the only thing that she could hope for was that she didn't hate her.

Hesitantly she looked up and was relieved to see that her friend wasn't mad at her and was even smiling at her, then looked back down in regret. "No... I heard a sound upstairs and when I called you, you didn't answer me so I got worried. I found you laying on the ground and when I removed the headset you were just staring into nothing. Your mind is literally in the game now, forcefully seperated from your body..." SilverMinnow explained then began to tear up again and started crying anew, "I'm sorry... I don't know how to even begin fixing this... I should've warned you... I should've told you... I'm so sorry Esme-chan..."

"As far as I know, your body has been forced into a comatose state. My parents will pay whatever bills they have to but I will need to call the hospital in a few hours to report this and so your body gets the nutrients it needs. I was diving on the net when I came across a stray scrap of data about this but I couldn't trace the source, but it did lead me to this game. From there I discovered the files containing the information about this, but I haven't been able to crack them yet, they are heavily encrypted and protected; it took me long enough just to find them in the first place," SilverMinnow explained as she removed one hand and waved it in a circular motion, pulling up all the files that she was working on and as they floated in the air you could see the chains and locks that were covering them and they all seemed to be in an alien language. "Someone is paying big money to make sure that this doesn't go public and is going through a lot of trouble to make sure any hackers like me can't easily break in so that the public doesn't know anything about it. The only ones that really know anything are the ones that are directly involved and the victims. Hackers know about it too, but most of them are too scared to do anything in case they are targeted next, you probably heard what happened to the last group of hackers that tried to break in. Officially they were 'banned from the site, unofficially they were stripped of their memory and made to act as NPCs," she enlightened her as she replaced her arm as she glared at the troublesome files.

Setsugie had come across two female players he was about to greet them when he heard the talk about something about her comatosed state Setsugie smirked keeping hidden behind a building close by, but then the talk about hackers erupted Setsugie widened his eyes as he got serious, listening closely. 'Should I report them? She said she was a hacker also, and whats this about a file? So many questions....' he thought but then Setsugie felt something like a sudden head splitting headache Setsugie grunted he held his forced starting to breath heavily "My....Head..." Setsugie mumbled as the pain started to slowly drift away; after his little episode slowly passed Setsugie resumed to eavesdrop on the players still asking himself the questions he thought before.

"Don't worry everything will be taken care of, and I promise you won't be alone," she tried to calm her friend even her glare immediatly disappearing. Just then another blue-haired girl showed up asking if she was stuck in the game as well. "Yes, I'm SilverMinnow, and no I'm not stuck in the game. Who are you? And what do you mean 'as well'? Please don't tell me that you're stuck in here," she almost begged.

Letting go of Esme and and gave her a mana pill then turning around she dropped a specially developed rune summoning her pets to her side. Making sure to stay close to her friend she began saying a seris of seemingly random numbers and when she was done they did something that no pet in the game should've been able to do. The night that she'd first began playing and caught her pets she hadn't been training them as she'd said, instead she'd been modifying them to scan and store data on other players and NPCs. Right then they revealed their true forms of a semi-trasparent blue screen with a semi-transparent blue keyboard attached and a hover-disk.

"Have you been 'killed' sometime the past 24 hours? If so what did you attackers look like if you can remember? Give me every bit of data possible, even the tiniest detail is crucial. What were you doing at the time that this happened? Do you have any ideas as to why you would be targeted?" Kristy asked getting straight to business.

As she was speaking the hover-disk swirled around the girl she was asking questions of to scan her and sending the data back to the semi-transparent sreen where she was tapping at and sorting it, every now and then using the keyboard to type something in or to bring up a new file. If there was any doubts in Esme's mind before that she was a hacker, she knew that they were certianly gone now and that she'd just revealed herself to this girl.

When the scan came to a close Kristy expected the hover-disk to lay on the ground beside her feet, instead it flew off alerting her to another person's presence. Quickly she created a glitch in the gaming system, making any more unwelcome players automatically skip over their area as the disk swirled around the intruder to signal where they were. "Who are you? Why are you spying on us?" Kristy demanded coldly, shooting a look at Esme to not use her real name.

Setsugie had been found out 'well sooner or later they would've found out.' Setsugie thought, he walked into the open where the three girls where "Hello, I couldn't help but to over hear your conversation, I seems quite interesting." Setsugie said. Partly true Setsugie was interested in what happened to the girls though it was hard to believe he knew something was up nonetheless, "I am Setsugie." he answered; 'One of them is a hacker I got to be careful of what I say and do.' Setsugie thought " Your friend cannot log out is that correct?" Setsugie said looking that Esme's avatar.

"Neither of them can, I'm not technically logged into the game. As far as the administrators of this game are concerned I'm just a minor anomaly at the moment tha will sort itself out in a few hours. So what will it take to keep your mouth shut about me? And do you have any information reguarding this phenomena?" she demanded as she wentbck to work, confident that he couldn't and wouldn't take off on her.

"Well I can see that a problem and don't worry if you don't do anything illegal I wont report you to the administrators. Though it's weird, not being able to disconnect out of the game, comatose state, I feel like I've heard this before somewhere...." Setsugie said and started to think back feeling a slight deja vu. But the it flashed in his mind, " Know I remember it was a friend of mine, he was on the net when he stumbled upon a locked file about Trivula, he was intrigued he tried to open it but to no avail he called out a few of his colleagues and in a matter of weeks they opened it. What really shocked them was the information he and his friend found, comatose people children and adults alike he was going to release this information to the world.... But before he could he and his colleagues where sent to jail on unknown charges, and they where never heard from again, that was a ear ago, to this day I still cant contact him I search multiple times in his computer but it was wiped clean. This is the only info I have gathered in the past year from anonymous sources, and I'm not a hacker so finding that info was hard to find." said Setsugie, thinking if it was right to give hem that information.

Pausing in her work she looked over at the boy, calculations and thoughts running through her mind so fast that they would've been incomprehensible to almost any other person, hacker or not. "That sounds plausible, the most recent group of hackers were forced to act as NPCs with their memories locked, perhaps the same happened to your friend and his group. It would certianly explain why everyone else is too scared to try anything anymore or even give up what data that they had gathered so far," she thought out loud then turned back to her work as she continued speaking, "Usually we live for the thrill of a tough hack like this one but it seems that the price is just too high this time. I'm going to have to see if there are any insanes left or if they've already been rounded up."

Glancing up to give him a skeptical look she gestured to the file that she'd pulled up earlier that was still floating next to her, "I didn't exactly come across that by any legal means, to sum it up I copied the original and stole it after I started the game. Also I'm pretty sure it was illegal to alter the pets as I did. Now get over here already, there's no need for you to be seperated from the group now, you might as well see everything that I'm working on, even if you don't understand most of it." SilverMinnow then gestured for the hover-disk to scan Heartwings now, which it immediatly jumped up to do as ordered.

Setsugie nodded walking forwards to the group still in doubt "So if you get killed by certain cloaked group you get sucked into the game world?" Setsugie said resting his hand on one of his swords, "This all seems to be coming out of some manga or something," Setsugie then added taking a slight chuckle, he had read lots of manga to see where this was going, "What happens if she stays in the system for too long? Might the Game masters see her as a bug that need to be fixed and 'delete' her?" Setsugie said.

"This is no manga or dream, this is real life and it's serious," she stated with a cold anger underlineing her words that weren't directed at the boy rather at the person who dared to do this to her best friend and at herself for her incompetence of being unable to protect said friend.

"The GMs probably know all about this already so they won't do much more than just leave them be and play dumb to any questions asked about it. However if someone is persistent and starts asking too many questions or the right questions then that person might find themselves either banned or a NPC with their memory suppressed. The admins are who I'd be worrying about, they might actually start suppressing her memory right away. I don't think that they'd 'delete' them though since I don't think that even they know how it works. My theory on who's behind this is that it's a rouge sect of the company wanting revenge for some slight like stealing their ideas or wrongful termination or any number of things. Of course it could also just be a group of gamers that just happened to know a lot about programming that are doing this for the hell of it because they were bored," as she spoke her rage was rising higher and higher until she just had to stop what she was doing or risk making a mistake.

Breathing deeply she closed her eyes to calm herself for a few minutes before looking up in shame at the people around her. "Sorry, I'm not mad at any of you, just at myself and whoever did this. It says a lot about someone who's able to break through my barriers so neatly and easily, it should've taken them hours if at all, which would've been enough time for someone to come by and help or for me to log in and do something. It looks to me like the kill strike infects the player with some kind of virus that keeps all data in the game i.e. your consiousness and blocks all transmission to and from your body, which is what causes the comatose state. What I can't figure out is how to reverse it without causing any damage to the player, but it seems like you need to die first in order for the 'virus' to take full effect," SilverMinnow explained as she stepped away from the screen to let everyone else see the two diagrams of Azure and Heartwings side by side.

"Interesting, so we need to find whoever killed your friend, to get some answers seeing as Game masters and admins are not going to help us right." Setsugie said looking at the diagrams. 'Hmm, this is all starting to add up bit by bit. Soon I will find out who or what is doing this I hope.' Setsugie thought, "One question just out of curiosity, what where to happen if your friend dies in this state, would something happen to her or nothing at all?" Setsugie said looking at Heartwings 'Feeling exhaustion it might be because of the game state, her health points might be low also, she's a cleric heal might work it worth a shot it not going to hurt anyone right?.' Setsugie thought "Miss why not try and use your heal ability on yourself to see if the cause of your exhaustion is health points?" Setsugie said.

"It's SilverMinnow, hopefully it's the only name that you will know me by," she finally introduced herself as she looked from the charts to her friend that was complaining of exhaustion to the other girl who'd yet to say anything. "It could be that instead of shattering the programs that I had running were just damaged and since they are self-repairing they are using the nearest source of energy to do that which in this case is you Heartwings. But that's strange because any normal hacker or programmer would either shatter them or slip through the cracks to show off their skill, not just damage them," she explained. In her mind she thought of another theory but didn't say it aloud so as to not raise any false hopes, 'It could also be that the damaged programs are tethering her to her body as they try to repair which is causing extra stain. But the question is how to fix it without leaving where I currently am?' Not seeing any alternitive solution she looked hesitantly at her friend as she started to explain. "I have to dive to fix the problem, I can't do it from here, it'll take me about twenty minutes max depending on what the damage is," SilverMinnow explained waiting for her reaction.

Sighing she tried to think of an analogy that would make the most sense to someone who wasn't as advanced in computers as a majority of people were. "Think of the net as an ocean. All of the data going around is like the currents and water and the different programs together make up the sealife such as plants, fish, mamals, etc if you will. Sometimes, if a hacker or programmer or anybody computer savey is good enough they can dive into the net and manipulate it to some degree like when a diver goes into the ocean. It is just as dangerous as real world diving, because you can be seen as a virus or you can get turned around real easily too," she explained.

"No, if it was that I could stay right where I am. The reason I have to leave is because I need to go onto your computer where I placed all of the firewalls and other programs and see where it takes me from there to see if I can fix the damage. Kind of like a diver swimming to a different reef rather than going down into an underwater canyon," SilverMinnow clarified making sure to give her an analogy so that she could follow along with her.
