| Name: Istrain Derastil Garmold | Age: 26 | Gender: Male | Sexuality: Bisexual | Height: 4'9"" | Weight: 122lbs |
| Race/Species: Dwarf | Hair Colour: Dark brown | Eye Colour: Hazel | Skin Colour: Tanned | Trade: Merchant |

Image

Appearance:
Istrain stands at only four feet and nine inches of height, and is of average weight. He has toned muscles and tanned skin, and he keeps his face with a small amount of stubble. He has hazel eyes with a slight almond shape that are somewhat sunken in, and his eyebrows are neither thin nor bushy. He has an average, slightly pointed nose and he has full bow lips. His dark brown hair comes down to approximately his chin and is straight. He typically dresses in comfortable clothes - plain pants and a plain shirt - but he usually wears expensive, fancy jackets with embroidery and beading.

Image

Personality:

Ever since he was a child, Istrain has been an extremely sly and charismatic individual. An excellent liar and a master manipulator, Istrain's charisma makes him an excellent trader as he is easily able to persuade customers and clients to buy from him - often at prices higher than his competitors might offer. Istrain is extremely ambitious, wanting to profit immensely from his trade and seeking to eventually live a life of comfort and luxury. He can be somewhat deceptive and manipulative, particularly when it comes to relationships both business and personal, and while he is flirtatious, he has commitment issues when it comes to romance. He tends to engage only in the physical aspect of his relationships. Istrain is extremely family-oriented, and would do anything for his parents or his siblings, even at cost to himself or his wealth. Istrain's family is the only thing that matters more to him than wealth and material goods, and it shows in his interactions with him as he is extremely warm and loving, while outside of his family, he tends to be much colder.

Image

History/Bio:

The second-eldest of eight siblings, Istrain exhibited a remarkable talent for lying and convincing others to listen to him. As such, when it came time to pick a career path for him, his parents decided that he should pursue the merchants’ trade, knowing that his charisma would make him an excellent trader and barterer. He was trained by a pair of Master Traders, a married couple called Eliseo and Yamina who were eager to train the clever young boy. Istrain became close friends with Eliseo and Yamina’s son, a boy named Adagov who was a year older than him and also learning the merchants’ trade. When they were old enough to start working on their own, they worked as partners, and they quickly gained vast amounts of success.

Shortly after Istrain’s younger sister Barynn left Bhagh-Nernwahrum to venture to the surface world, Istrain and Adagov ran into some trouble with a client. They were in Bhagh-Nernwahrum’s upper area, where the merchants from the surface world came to trade with the dwarven merchants without entering the city itself, and a pair of human traders shortchanged them in a deal. Istrain and Adagov confronted the human traders, and the human traders revealed that they were members of a prolific gang on the surface. They threatened Istrain and Adagov, telling them that they were going to ruin the two of them if they ever tried to do business with them or any of their contacts again.

Istrain and Adagov decided not to let the threats phase them, and they continued their business. It was a few weeks later before they encountered the human traders again, and they discovered that one of the elven traders with whom they’d made a few deals earlier in the week was a client of the gang. The human traders demanded that Istrain and Adagov step outside and fight them, but the dwarves refused. Then, the human traders presented them with a choice: if Istrain and Adagov didn’t step outside, they’d track down and find Istrain’s younger sister, Barynn, who they knew to be working in a jewelry shop in the nearest town to Bhagh-Nernwahrum.

Istrain, who valued his family above all else, and Adagov, who’d always had something of a secret crush on the second-eldest Garmold daughter, refused to let such a threat stand, so they agreed to fight the two. They exited the trading area and brawled with them. Istrain, who was a decent fighter, fared well against his opponent up until the other human merchant pulled out a hidden dagger and used it to stab Adagov. Istrain was shocked, and he ran back into Bhagh-Nernwahrum. He told the city officials about what had happened and the human traders were banished from trading with the dwarves, but that wasn’t good enough for Istrain. Determined to avenge his best friend’s death and to protect his younger sister in case the gang attempted to pursue her, Istrain decided to leave Bhagh-Nernwahrum and to pursue the gang. With the help of some allies he found on the surface world, and with the help of his extreme charisma and cleverness, he was not only able to find the traders responsible for Adagov’s death, but he also managed to dismantle the gang from within over the next few months, earning their trust and then betraying them.

Once he was satisfied that the gang was no more, Istrain decided that he wanted to stay in the surface world. He’d come to quite like it, and he’d realized that there were countless trade opportunities to pursue on the surface. So, he said goodbye to his family and then set out to make it as a traveling merchant in the surface world. Right now, he is slowly traveling towards Veritas Isle, where he knows that his sister has settled down and where he wishes to surprise her with a visit, as he made his family agree not to tell her that he’d left Bhagh-Nernwahrum permanently to live on the surface solely to surprise her.

Barynn couldn't help laughing as she watched the interaction between Luther and the dragons. It was adorable how much he cared for little Orra, and she smiled at the sight of them cuddling while she leashed up Longrus. He gave a flick of his tail, apparently perfectly fine with leaving despite how much fun he'd been having with Orra. It was a relief to her that she at least had a relaxed, lazy dragon who was fine with whatever she did. She still felt uncomfortable with how seemingly upset Luther was with her, so she gave him a small nod that she was ready to go with him.

* * *

Veritas City, Istrain thought, was certainly a sight to behold. A floating island in the sky that could only be reached on the back of a dragon? The short dwarven man was a bit shaken from the dragon ride as he emerged from the landing station and into the streets of the city, but he could certainly understand why his sister had wanted so badly to see this place. It was magnificent. He could only imagine the trade opportunities that might abound in this place. Maybe he'd end up staying, too - he and Barynn could get a decent-sized place together, he imagined, since her jewelry shop would certainly bring in more than enough for her to get by, and his trading would do the same. He could have women over, and she could do....whatever it was that Barynn did when she wasn't working. It would be perfect.

Of course, he still liked the idea of traveling. Perhaps he'd wait and see. For now, he just wanted to go find that little jewelry shop that she'd been working on in the last letter their sister had received from her. His understanding was that it was a small building in a decent neighbourhood, though the city was large and he was small, so it might take him a bit to actually find the place. Maybe she'd have a sign up out front that would help him out. Again, he'd have to wait and see. That was fine, though. Istrain was an opportunistic man, good at waiting to see what would happen and then striking when the moment was right. Not that meeting up with his sister was similar to a business transaction, of course, though he did intend to invest in her shop. He'd saved up a good sum of gold that he wanted to put towards her business. She had real talent and her shop deserved to have the best possible start.

Luther brought Barynn back to her shop. She had things to do for her shop, though he did kiss her on the head and told her he would come back with a surprise before he left. Luther made his way back to his house where he took a much needed nap to clear his head.

Haera decided to come back home. She had spent enough time away from her family. She knew Roshia had to have had her babies now and she knew that Nasir had the twins. Also Elwin's baby had to be born too. So she was excited to head back home and meet her new nieces or nephews. She had ridden with a dwarf man the whole way there and almost pushed him off the dragon when he kept acting like a baby about flying the thing up to the islands. When they had touched land she hopped off with no assistance and watched the man walk away. She followed for a bit since it was the way to her village. "Try not to cry when you get lost, kid!" She said as she passed him and waved a hand.

Barynn smiled when Luther kissed her on the head, relieved that he wasn't letting his annoyance with her affect their relationship. She'd been concerned. She always heard about couples who were mad at one another who acted as if they were no longer in love, and it had just been another reason she didn't want a relationship. Luther had made everything seem different, though. Once inside the shop, she locked the door, unleashed Longrus, and went to get the care package that Luther had left there with her. She took out the bag of food, turning it over in the hope that there would be some directions written on it somewhere, but there weren't. She frowned, looking down at the dragon. He looked excited, standing upright and watching her intently. "Can I trust you to just eat what you're supposed to?" she asked, opening the bag and setting it on the floor. Longrus didn't respond in any way, simply went straight to the bag, stuck his little face inside, and started to eat. Barynn smiled a bit and then headed into the back to get back to work on those tiny jewel cuts she'd been working on.

* * *

Istrain frowned as the woman behind him passed him by and spoke. She was an attractive enough blonde, but there was a harsh look in her eyes and an unpleasant demeanour about her speech. He preferred his women more gentle and demure. He'd not caught her name, but he didn't particularly care to find out, either. "Try to get home quickly," he said to her. "I'm pretty sure you need a nap. It must be exhausting going so far out of your way to be a bitch all the time. I'm too sober for this," he said, muttering the last part more to himself than to her.

Luther woke up some hours later and sat up before trying to realize what the hell he had to do before it popped up and he hurried out the door with Orra. He hurried to the bakery and got them two big slices of chocolate cake with chocolate icing and headed back to the shop. He knew he was harsh with Barynn, but what Nasir had told him made him rethink somethings and also put him back on track. Luther didn't want another Erorn and he didn't want to be that person he was with him. Getting to the shop, Luther did his knock, and waited.

Haera stopped what she her walking and people around him started to murmur. Everyone who lived here and been here for a while knew of the Keavaris' and especially knew of Haera. She turned around and walked back. "I wouldn't be so cranky if I didn't have to hear your stupid CHILD like cries coming from behind me on the ride up here. And since when do children grow facial hair? You must be part monkey or something." She said and leaned down. "No scurry along and go find your mother." She said.

Barynn was hard at work when she heard the knock. She jumped slightly, setting her work aside and leaving the back room. Longrus, much to her relief, was just jumping off the futon when she came out. He hadn't eaten too much of the food - in fact, she thought, he'd eaten less than she probably would have given him if she'd been putting it in a food bowl, so apparently he knew how to regulate himself. He bounded to the door while Barynn followed him, opening it up and smiling up at Luther. "Welcome back," she said. "I fed Longrus!"

* * *

Istrain raised an eyebrow, adjusting the pack that hung from his back and looking up at the woman. He couldn't help smirking despite the situation. "I have to admit, I'm impressed," he said. "You're flexible enough to have your foot in your mouth and your head up your ass at the same time. I bet the men just love you." His hazel eyes flickered with amusement. He wasn't concerned. There was nothing this woman would do in the middle of a busy city. She had the appearance of a warrior, but she certainly didn't have the heart of one.

Luther looked down when she opened the door and laughed when she said she fed Longrus. "Well damn... look at you being all grown up and stiff." He said before walking in and letting Orra go at it with Longrus. He turned to her and opened the box to reveal two big slices of cake. "And here is my surprise... though... I forgot that we have to eat real food. So after our walk we can go eat at a dragon friendly diner." He chuckled.

People around them gasped and Haera laugh. It looked like she had taken it as a joke, but that was far from how Haera was feeling right now. She swung her fist and made contact with his jaw. "You talk a lot of shit of such a short ass man child. Go back to sucking daddy's dick and get the fuck out my city." She growled.

Barynn giggled at his comment as he walked in. She shut the door behind him, smiling when she saw Orra rush straight to Longrus. They were just the cutest pair. She watched Luther open the box and her hazel eyes went wide, lighting up with delight. "Luther!" she exclaimed, grinning up at him. "Have I told you that you're the best? Because you're absolutely the best," she said. This was definitely a surprise worth waiting for.

* * *

Istrain was still smirking even after Haera took a swing at him. The contact was hard, and he lifted a hand to gently rub the spot where she'd made contact. He pulled his hand back, glancing at it to be sure that there was no blood, and then he looked back up at her. "You've got a good swing," he said. "You'd be a lot more likable if not for that hole in your face that all the noise comes out of." With that, he took a step forward and threw an uppercut towards Haera's jaw, making his own satisfying contact. He hadn't been looking for a fight, but apparently she had been, so what kind of gentleman would he be not to oblige?

Luther chuckled, "well who am I to deny a woman her chocolate cake addiction? Hm?" He asked before handing her a fork and a piece on a throw away plate before getting his and sitting down. "So... I went home and had a nap, because I like to be productive." He smiled before taking a bite, chewing, and swallowing. "What about you? How is your piece doing?" He asked.

Meanwhile in the streets of the city Haera and Istrain had being fight in the streets. She spit blood at him after they were broke up by Uncle Q. "You hit like the child you are." She said before walking off to her parents place before she got past Uncle Q and killed the man. Haera could have killed him, but he wasn't warranted for death. Just a few more punches to the face. She smirked though, the fact that he hit her back meant he was either stupid as fuck or he didn't take shit from anyone.

Barynn giggled softly, taking the fork and the cake eagerly. She sat down with him, taking a bite while he told her about his nap. She giggled. "Very productive," she said. "But you brought cake, so you definitely accomplished something," she added teasingly, giggling a bit. "The piece is coming along well. It's almost done. I've cut and shaped all the little parts, I just have to do the metalwork and then set all the stones. That's the easy part, though. It should be done soon." She smiled somewhat dreamily. She was excited about this piece, and she knew it was going to look great when she finished. Longrus, meanwhile, wandered over to the still-open food bag and stuck his face in, starting to eat as well.

* * *

Istrain scowled as he watched Haera leave, rolling his eyes. He straightened off, lifting a hand and wiping the blood from his face on the back of it. An unexpected road bump, but he had places to be and people to surprise. Besides, Barynn would probably have something to clean up his face when he found her. She wouldn't be surprised to see him like this. He glanced around at the people who had been watching before he started to walk off, figuring he'd best get to work on finding Barynn's shop.

Luther listen as she talked and nodded when he needed to. He was curious as to what this piece would look like if it was taking this long. He knew Penelo had already talked to her customers about the shop and they were eager to come look. So maybe someone would but this expensive piece from her the day she opened. He looked over at Longrus and raised an eyebrow. "You... didn't even pit the food in the bowl?" He asked.

Barynn followed Luther's gaze towards Longrus and she gave a shrug of her shoulders. "I told him I trusted him not to overeat," she said. "And he ate less like this than what I would have put in the bowl if I'd been guessing, anyways. He's a good boy." At hearing this, Longrus seemed to perk up slightly, removing his head from the food bag and looking her way. Barynn giggled, waving at him before taking another bite of her cake.

Luther shrugged, "If it works I guess... but you are going to eat out of a bowl at my house, mister." He said before taking another bit of his cake and watching Orra hop on his back and tap it. "Orra no... he is not your damn ride. You have freaking feet and wings. Use them, child." He said and she blinked at him like she had no idea what he was talking about. "Jesus..." He said. Luther looked at Barynn. "Oh gosh you got some chocolate on your face." He said and leaned down, licking it off her lips.

Barynn giggled as she watched them. Longrus seemed content with Orra on his back and he started to walk around, giving her a ride around the room. Barynn blinked in surprise when Luther commented that she had chocolate on her face, and then stifled a giggle as Luther leaned down to lick the chocolate off her face. She moved her lips delicately against his, turning the motion into a soft kiss.

Istrain had been walking around town for a little bit now, garnering strange looks from the townspeople. Finally, though, he decided to just admit defeat and ask for help. He ducked into a nearby hotel, politely asking the clerk whether there was a jewelry shop in town. She informed him that the town's jeweler was retiring, but that there was a new shop opening up soon from what she'd heard, and she pointed him in the right direction. He soon found the building she'd indicated. No signage whatsoever, because of course Barynn wouldn't think to put something up to at least advertise what the building was going to be. He laughed to himself, shaking his head as he walked up. He grabbed the door handle and gave it a pull, but the door didn't open. A frown came to his lips. If he knew his sister, she was definitely in there, though the sun was starting to set just enough that he couldn't see inside the windows. So, he lifted up a hand and knocked a few times loudly on the door.

Luther kissed her back and leaned her back on the futon and kissed down her neck and tracing his fingers up her thigh. "Mmm the things I could do to you, babe." He whispered into her ear before kissing her collar bone and letting his hands travel up until they met a certain spot. He as going to take it further when there as a knock at the door. "Mmm sorry babe..." He whispered before getting up and looking throw the window. It was a dwarf man and looked a bit like Barynn. He opened the door and looked down, "Can I help you?" He asked politely.

Barynn set the cake aside quickly when Luther started to push her back. She shivered as his lips kissed along her neck. Her mouth fell open slightly as his hands wandered upwards and she wondered if, finally, they were going to -

They were interrupted by a knock at the door.

Barynn groaned loudly when Luther got up to go answer the door. "You don't have to get it," she whined before he opened the door. She sighed softly, smoothing down her dress and shifting back into a sitting position on the edge of the futon. She couldn't see past Luther, so she had no idea who it was.

Istrain raised an eyebrow in surprise when a tall man answered the door instead of his dear sister as he'd expected. He adjusted the pack on his back and ran his thumb along the small cut on his cheek from one of the blonde woman's punches. It was still bleeding a bit. "Yeah, actually, I'm looking for a woman named Barynn," he said. He held a hand up just above his head. "About so tall, dark hair, most beautiful thing you've ever seen," he said with a smirk. If that wasn't enough information for this man then obviously his sister hadn't been here.

Luther raised an eyebrow and looked at hims beat up self. "Yeah I know her, the question is what business do you have with her at this time of night?" He asked. It wasn't like he was going to let the guy in just like that and by the look of him he didn't seem so... trustworthy. He met a lot of guys who brawled and the look in this guy's eyes didn't sit right with him.

Barynn listened curiously, but the door was just far enough away and she was just small enough that she couldn't quite hear what was being said. Longrus had moved to sit beside her feet, though he didn't seem too concerned about the man at the door. Perhaps it was because he knew that Barynn was in good hands as long as Luther was around.

Istrain frowned as he heard the man's words and he folded his arms over his chest. "What are you, her bodyguard?" he asked. "It's none of your business what my business is with Barynn. Is she inside?" he asked. He tried to peer past the tall man, but he couldn't see. He was quickly becoming irritated with this city as a whole - first the aggressive blonde with the mean right hook, now the tall man who wouldn't let him see his own damn sister.

Luther blinked, "Yeah... you can say something like that. Excuse me if you could just... move along, we won't have a issue here." He said and raised his foot before gently pushing him back and closing the door before locking it. "Just ignore it. Some beaten up man came asking for you, but he sounds like an asshole. Now... where were we?" He smirked.

Barynn raised an eyebrow curiously as Luther came back. A frown came to her lips when she heard his words, her mind suddenly curious about the man at the door instead of what Luther had been about to do before the knock had came. "Asking for me? Do you mean by name?" she asked, standing up from the futon. "What'd he say? Did he give his name? Was he a dwarf?" It didn't make sense for someone to be asking for her by name. Hardly anyone in town knew her name, and all the people who did know her name in town were people that Luther knew. If he didn't know this person but the person knew her...then perhaps it was someone from back home? Or someone from her old town?

* * *

Istrain's hazel eyes widened as the tall man pushed him back with only his foot. The nerve of him! He was seeing red. He couldn't believe that this man would not only keep him from his sister, but also be rude enough to push him aside with his foot. He rolled his sleeves up and lifted a hand, knocking a little harder on the door than he had the last time. He had no intentions of leaving until he either saw his sister or was at least directed to where she was.

Luther blinked, "He didn't give me his name, just demanded that he see you, yes he said your name. Uhh yeah or a really short man." He said and looked back at the door that he was banging on. "He looked roughed up. I asked what he wanted and he said it was none of my damn business. So I assumed he had more bad intentions than good." Luther said and by the look on her face he went to open the door. Luther was getting tired of trying to protect her. To each their own.

Barynn grew more and more curious the more he said. A dwarf had come asking for her and Luther hadn't assumed it was important? There came another knock, and she was relieved when Luther got up to answer it. This time, she stood up and went with him. When the door was opened, she peered under his arm and let out a gasp when she saw her brother on the other side. She gently pushed past Luther and all but threw herself into Istrain's arms.

Istrain was waiting patiently outside the door when it opened. He was pretty close to reaching up and clocking the tall man, but then he saw Barynn peering out from behind the door as well. He breathed a sigh of relief, his tense stature immediately softening. "Barynn," he said. He let out a slight 'oof' when she threw herself at him, but he caught her with ease and then spun her around. "I'm so glad to see you," he said, setting her down and kissing the top of her head, though he kept his arms wound around her. "Your tall monkey here didn't want to let me in."

Luther watched the scene unfold hand. He wondered what kind of family this was and thanked the gods above for sending the midget man over to keep him from doing anything stupid with her. Luther wanted to know her more before just jumping the hay. It was clear the dwarfs from down below were more mongrels than respective people. Maybe he should have taken Penelo's words to heart when she said she was a rarity dwarf. When the midget man called him a monkey Luther glared, "You want to come by me with that name again? Maybe if you knew how to talk to people you would have gotten to see her the first time." He said. It looked like he didn't know how to talk to people. From what he looked like he opened his mouth and got the shit kicked out of him. Luther was not going to have a hard choice when it came to Barynn. He could easily put her off.

Barynn sighed softly when she heard both Istrain's and Luther's words. She stepped back from her brother and folded her arms over her chest. "Okay, look. You two are going to need to get along. Istrain, be nice," she said, pointing a finger at her brother before turning towards Luther. Despite her annoyance that they were already fighting, her hazel eyes were bright with excitement. "Luther, this is my big brother, Istrain. He's the one I told you about, the trader that always used to trade for gemstones and things that I could use in my jewelry," she told him, grinning before she turned back to her brother. "And Istrain, this is my boyfriend, Luther."

Istrain glared up at Luther when he spoke, but then turned his gaze back towards Barynn and nodded. "I'll be nice," he said, giving her a sly smile. A bright and genuine grin came to his lips when Barynn told the tall man that Istrain was the brother she'd told him about, and he reached over and grabbed his sister's hand. "Good to know that even this far from home, I'm still the favourite brother," he said with a grin. When she introduced the tall man as her boyfriend Luther, though, his smile started to fade into an expression of confusion. "Your boyfriend...?" he asked slowly, looking back and forth between Luther and Barynn a few times. "You look like my sister, but who are you really?"

Luther figured he was her brother and really didn't need an introduction, but he smiled, and did a small wave when he was introduced as the boyfriend. He stayed quiet and let them talk since he didn't have much to say and he was thinking things over. Right now seemed like a horrible time to meet family when he was debating breaking up with her.

Barynn giggled a bit at how confused Istrain seemed to be. She smiled, squeezing her brother's hand gently. "It's a long story," she said softly before glancing up at Luther. "All you really need to know is that I'm very happy with Luther. I've never felt this way about anyone before. You should come inside! Tell me what you're doing here, because last I heard, you were back home!" She glanced up at Luther for him to move aside so the three of them could come into the building and out of the street. It was getting dark, and if there was one thing she knew about Luther, it was that he'd probably feel better if she was inside than standing outside the shop in the street.

Istrain smiled when he heard Barynn's words. As much as he already didn't like Barynn's boyfriend, he also knew that if she loved him enough to be his girlfriend, there had to be a good reason. He looked up at Luther, contemplating for a moment before sticking out a hand with a slight smirk. "If my sister cares about you, then you must be something special," he said. "You'll have to forgive my confusion. Barynn's always been something of a solitary one, never really showed any interest in romance."
