| Name: Istrain Derastil Garmold | Age: 26 | Gender: Male | Sexuality: Bisexual | Height: 4'9"" | Weight: 122lbs |
| Race/Species: Dwarf | Hair Colour: Dark brown | Eye Colour: Hazel | Skin Colour: Tanned | Trade: Merchant |

Image

Appearance:
Istrain stands at only four feet and nine inches of height, and is of average weight. He has toned muscles and tanned skin, and he keeps his face with a small amount of stubble. He has hazel eyes with a slight almond shape that are somewhat sunken in, and his eyebrows are neither thin nor bushy. He has an average, slightly pointed nose and he has full bow lips. His dark brown hair comes down to approximately his chin and is straight. He typically dresses in comfortable clothes - plain pants and a plain shirt - but he usually wears expensive, fancy jackets with embroidery and beading.

Image

Personality:

Ever since he was a child, Istrain has been an extremely sly and charismatic individual. An excellent liar and a master manipulator, Istrain's charisma makes him an excellent trader as he is easily able to persuade customers and clients to buy from him - often at prices higher than his competitors might offer. Istrain is extremely ambitious, wanting to profit immensely from his trade and seeking to eventually live a life of comfort and luxury. He can be somewhat deceptive and manipulative, particularly when it comes to relationships both business and personal, and while he is flirtatious, he has commitment issues when it comes to romance. He tends to engage only in the physical aspect of his relationships. Istrain is extremely family-oriented, and would do anything for his parents or his siblings, even at cost to himself or his wealth. Istrain's family is the only thing that matters more to him than wealth and material goods, and it shows in his interactions with him as he is extremely warm and loving, while outside of his family, he tends to be much colder.

Image

History/Bio:

The second-eldest of eight siblings, Istrain exhibited a remarkable talent for lying and convincing others to listen to him. As such, when it came time to pick a career path for him, his parents decided that he should pursue the merchants’ trade, knowing that his charisma would make him an excellent trader and barterer. He was trained by a pair of Master Traders, a married couple called Eliseo and Yamina who were eager to train the clever young boy. Istrain became close friends with Eliseo and Yamina’s son, a boy named Adagov who was a year older than him and also learning the merchants’ trade. When they were old enough to start working on their own, they worked as partners, and they quickly gained vast amounts of success.

Shortly after Istrain’s younger sister Barynn left Bhagh-Nernwahrum to venture to the surface world, Istrain and Adagov ran into some trouble with a client. They were in Bhagh-Nernwahrum’s upper area, where the merchants from the surface world came to trade with the dwarven merchants without entering the city itself, and a pair of human traders shortchanged them in a deal. Istrain and Adagov confronted the human traders, and the human traders revealed that they were members of a prolific gang on the surface. They threatened Istrain and Adagov, telling them that they were going to ruin the two of them if they ever tried to do business with them or any of their contacts again.

Istrain and Adagov decided not to let the threats phase them, and they continued their business. It was a few weeks later before they encountered the human traders again, and they discovered that one of the elven traders with whom they’d made a few deals earlier in the week was a client of the gang. The human traders demanded that Istrain and Adagov step outside and fight them, but the dwarves refused. Then, the human traders presented them with a choice: if Istrain and Adagov didn’t step outside, they’d track down and find Istrain’s younger sister, Barynn, who they knew to be working in a jewelry shop in the nearest town to Bhagh-Nernwahrum.

Istrain, who valued his family above all else, and Adagov, who’d always had something of a secret crush on the second-eldest Garmold daughter, refused to let such a threat stand, so they agreed to fight the two. They exited the trading area and brawled with them. Istrain, who was a decent fighter, fared well against his opponent up until the other human merchant pulled out a hidden dagger and used it to stab Adagov. Istrain was shocked, and he ran back into Bhagh-Nernwahrum. He told the city officials about what had happened and the human traders were banished from trading with the dwarves, but that wasn’t good enough for Istrain. Determined to avenge his best friend’s death and to protect his younger sister in case the gang attempted to pursue her, Istrain decided to leave Bhagh-Nernwahrum and to pursue the gang. With the help of some allies he found on the surface world, and with the help of his extreme charisma and cleverness, he was not only able to find the traders responsible for Adagov’s death, but he also managed to dismantle the gang from within over the next few months, earning their trust and then betraying them.

Once he was satisfied that the gang was no more, Istrain decided that he wanted to stay in the surface world. He’d come to quite like it, and he’d realized that there were countless trade opportunities to pursue on the surface. So, he said goodbye to his family and then set out to make it as a traveling merchant in the surface world. Right now, he is slowly traveling towards Veritas Isle, where he knows that his sister has settled down and where he wishes to surprise her with a visit, as he made his family agree not to tell her that he’d left Bhagh-Nernwahrum permanently to live on the surface solely to surprise her.

Istrain smiled curiously as he heard them telling him about the drink. He took a smaller sip to examine the taste more, and then nodded. "Well, I like it," he said. It was definitely his kind of drink. He chuckled a bit at Haera's comment about Istrain wanting a piece of Birger and he nodded when the bartender turned him down. "Fair enough," he replied, though it didn't much stop him from sneaking a peek as the man walked off to tend to some other customer. His gaze shifted towards Haera when she spoke and a dark grin began to creep across his lips. "More than you can, I'll tell you that much right now," he replied confidently.

Birger laughed from across his tavern, "He says more than she..." The rest of the customers who knew Haera, which was most, laughed with him. She smirked and patted his shoulder, "We are gonna let him have his pride... I mean... that is all he really has." She said and downed her drink. "Ya adorable, kid. Real adorable." She said. Haera didn't need to scan the room for someone to take tonight, she only ever took Birger when she was here because she knew he could put out. "So what job is it you have? Since you were rude not to answer Birger." She said.

Istrain smiled, giving a roll of his eyes. He new he could outdrink her any day of the week, but if she wasn't willing to rise to the challenge then that was fine with him. Besides, he was enjoying this new drink and, to a certain degree, the company, so he didn't want to rush it. "I'm a trader," he replied, not entirely sure how he'd missed the question but not caring that he'd given Haera another thing to tease him for. "Trained my whole life with a pair of Master Traders from back home. That's why I decided to come to the surface; way more opportunities topside than down below."

Haera listened before smirking. Birger walked back around the bar, "Be nice, Hae." He said and she huffed. "Be nice... have I not been this whole time, Bir? His face is still intact, thank you." She said and looked back at the small man. "It isn't... I guess... a bad occupation. Though it is surly not the manliest, but hey... you gotta make a living somehow. Mmm though traders are good at being little cunt tarts. We had one a while back deceive a nice little family. Single mom... two kids... he almost paid with for it with his life. Had to use him as an example of not to fuck with our people... but I am sure you not one of those guys, right?" She asked. Birger glanced at him, his seemingly nice expression fading a bit before going back to normal when a pretty strawberry blonde girl came up and asked for ale.

Istrain gave a slight roll of his eyes at Haera's comment about trading being not the manliest of jobs. Of course it wasn't, but he'd had little interest in smithing. His mouth and his mind were his strongest assets when it came to work, and trading had made more than a little sense for him. "I'm not here to deceive anyone. I'm only here to help my sister with her shop, and then I'm going to be on the road again." It was true, after all. He'd come to visit Barynn only to find her still working on her shop and struggling with a break-up with the person who'd gone and paid for everything. Istrain wasn't going to leave while she was struggling, so once her shop was open and she was making enough income to break even, then he'd leave. His hazel eyes flitted towards the pretty girl who approached the counter briefly, taking a moment to admire the look of her.

Haera nodded, "Good, we can only take so much of you. Giving us a break would be nice." She joked, though she knew about his sister and frowned a bit. Luther had walked in a moment later and Haera turned, "Hot damn... I would ride that." She said and Birger looked before laughing. "Hey, Luther. Just in time... the shipment arrived early today." He said and walked out to the back of his tavern. Haera looked up at him, he was a tall man. Just how she liked them. Luther looked down and smiled before chuckled, "Haera, Penelo's girl." He said and Haera, for the first time in ever blushed. "Yeah... how did you know?" She asked.

"I am a friend of your mother's. I have seen pictures. I am Luther, nice to meet you." He said and stuck out his hand to shake her's and she took it, shaking it not as firmly as she had with Istrain. Luther was ignoring the dwarf man like he wasn't even there. Luther just wanted his stuff and then to leave.

Istrain narrowed his eyes when he saw Luther coming in and scoffed when he heard Haera's comment that she would ride that. Luther wasn't an unattractive man, but Istrain could only see red when the man was around after what he'd done to Barynn. "Luther, good to see you," he said sarcastically, before downing the last of his drink. "Haera was just commenting how fast she'd hop on top of you given the chance. Of course, you seem to have that effect on women, don't you?" He saw the blush on Haera's cheeks when Luther recognized her and he scowled. "I wouldn't waste your time with this one, Haera. Even a bitch like you deserves to pass her time with better. At least you're good enough to admit when you're just in it for the sex - Luther here's the type to make someone fall for him, then fuck them and leave them, aren't you, Luther? Because that's what you did to my little sister, right? Fucking bastard," he said, glaring coldly at the tall man. He wasn't too drunk yet, but he was definitely drunk enough to tell off the bastard who'd slept with his sister and then made her cry.

Haera's eyes glared at both men. She didn't like blushing to begin with and him calling her out on it was enough to annoy her. She looked up at Luther, hoping he could or would explain his side of the story. It was clear that he was fighting the urge to throw the dwarf across the room and she had to fight the urge to smile. Luther rolled his eyes and shook his head. "If anyone used anyone it was your sister. I was trying to do a good thing by helping her. She had little money. If she used it on food and housing alone she would have never gotten that shop. Or even if she did get the shop she wouldn't have enough to get the things she needed to make her jewelry. Shit wouldn't have hit the ceiling if you knew how to talk to people. Did you know your sister almost got raped and killed a few nights before your stupid ass walked in? That if I hadn't had the feeling shit was gonna happen and stayed she would have been fucking dead. I really liked your sister, enough to want to keep her safe. So your showing up, clearing looking like more trouble than good, turned on that protective switch. Instead of simply saying you were her brother you got attitude. It came off a bit more worrisome than that of good nature and of course your sister's head was so far up your ass that she couldn't see how much of a fucking prick you are."

He was so beyond done with him and his sister. Haera looked over at Istrain now and seemingly she was beginning to remember why she didn't like dwarfs to begin with, though it was partially her fault for making him look the way he did, but she couldn't do anything now for them. Birger came over with a box and Luther signed before looking back at Istrain. "The sex wasn't suppose to happen. I made sure NOT to have sex with her because I wanted to get to know your damn sister before hand. If she had said no, I would have stopped. I liked Barynn, but then the more I knew of her the more I didn't think it would work. She is too naive and ignorant to be with anyone." He said and headed for the door.

Istrain glared after Luther as he started to leave, already sick and tired of him. "She didn't use you, you idiot, she fell in love with you and you broke her heart," he shouted after him before turning back to face Birger, relieved that he'd come back. "I'm going to need a refill or two if I'm going to keep from going after him," he said, pushing his empty glass towards the other man. Barynn had never had feelings for anyone before. If she was in a relationship with Luther, it must have been a big deal. Her feelings towards him must have been deep, and intense, and real. He shook his head slightly before turning his gaze towards Haera. "This is why we don't go and catch feelings, kids," he said, not even able to smile at his own little joke what with how pissed he was.

Birger poured Istrain a glass before looking of at Haera. "From what I was hearing it looked like Luther isn't the only one at fault here. Maybe he felt like she was just using him for the money and then the sex thing was like his parting gift to her. Can't blame any one of them, but I understand being pissed off because she is your sister and I would probably have beaten his ass if I was in your shoes." She said and looked at Birger who nodded and poured her a glass. He knew Luther wasn't the type of man to use and throw away so harshly. He was a good man, with some demons, but a good man. It was sad though, because he had seen the face of a man falling and then crashing.

Istrain sighed, shaking his head and taking a drink. "That's basically his entire argument here, though. He seems to think it was all about the money, but she's very insistent that she wasn't taking his money. She had every intention of repaying him for everything once the shop got running and she had income. She was with him because she had feelings for him, and he doesn't seem to get that," he said, resting his chin on his hand and his elbow on the counter. "Whatever. We've all learned an important lesson about love and how frivolous it is, so let's just leave it at that." He took another drink, but his heart wasn't really in it any more. He'd been enjoying sitting and talking with Haera and Birger, but now he just wanted to leave. To go take a walk, to have a nap - maybe punching something would be nice. He was relieved that Haera seemed to see his side in this, though.

Haera shook her head. She had loved Birger once like that, but it didn't work out. She still loved him though, they were the bestest of friends. "Mmm love is a very inconvenient thing." She said and Birger scuffed. He knew before long someone out of the two were gonna have feelings for each other. The way they bickered and jabbed at each other made it pretty clear something was going to happen, but he made no remark about it. Instrain better just treat her right or he would be thrown off the island. Haera looked at Birger, "I will get his tab." She said and Birger nodded. "Come on, cowboy, we gonna go take a walk." She said and slid the money to her friend before hopping off the stool. "Damn tall people seats." She huffed with a smirk and looked at Birger. "Sorry you are so short, Hae." He said and she glared.

Istrain raised an eyebrow when Haera slid the money across the counter to Birger. He hopped down from the seat and looked towards her. "You didn't have to do that," he said, having been all set to pay his own tab and maybe buy her a drink or two. It did amuse him, though, when the tall man commented on Haera's height. Perhaps that was where she got it from, or perhaps her friend had picked it up from her.

Haera shrugged, "I know." She said and walked with him out of the tavern and turned to go back to the lake island. She stayed quiet for a good portion of the walk. There really wasn't much she needed to say and she didn't like filling the silence with just any kind of chit chat. So while staying quiet she thought why the hell she was hanging out with a dwarf. She hated them, more so the men really. They reminded her of her grandfather and she hated that. He was a waste of space. They made it to he private beach and then looked at the dojo. That wasn't there when she left. It could have been for Codon, she would ask later, and continued to walk until the got to the cliff that over looked the lake and sat down. "Now you can look over a nice scenery and calm down." She said before laying back and closing her eyes.

Istrain walked silently along with Haera. He wasn't sure where she was taking him, or why she'd suddenly decided to be so nice, but he wasn't in any position to complain about it right now. He appreciated her paying for his drinks, and when they reached the cliff that looked over the lake, he appreciated her bringing him here. It really was magnificent. He sighed slightly, sitting down beside her and gazing out at the beautiful scenery. After a bit, he couldn't help but to smile slightly. "There are so many beautiful things about the surface world that we lack underground," he said finally.

Haera opened one eye and looked at him before closing it again. "Yeah, I have seen dwarf homes underground. Couldn't say I would want to live there. You can't see the sunset or rise under there. It was actually quite depressing." She said. Haera had gotten curious as to how her mother lived before moving and she figured that was why the men were so shitty. Haera poked his side. "Contrary to many beliefs I don't always fight when I'm angry." She said with a smile.

Istrain chuckled a bit when Haera poked his side and he shook his head. "Most of us don't even know about the sun, let alone the sunsets and sunrises," he said. "I mean, we've all heard stories about it, but until you actually see it with your own eyes..." His voice trailed off slightly and he smiled a bit, thinking back to the first time he'd seen the sun. He'd never known something could be so big, or so bright, or so far away, or so beautiful.

Haera shook her head and let the cold wind blow over her. It helped her come off of that buzz. She listened and caught him smiling. Doofus. She thought. He hadn't made a comment on her not fighting all the time and she smirked. He was so wrapped up in the sun that it made him seem childlike. "Everyone should see them at least once before they die." She said.

Birger had a look in his eyes before they left and they were starting to bug her. She didn't like that look. It meant he knew something she didn't l. She would get it from him soon enough.

Istrain nodded slightly, smiling. "I can agree with that," he said, and then glanced over at her. "Thanks for bringing me here," he continued, offering her a small smile. "Maybe you're not as much of a bitch as I initially thought. I mean, you're still a bitch. Just not as much of one." It seemed like she was warming up to him. Not that anyone wouldn't, of course, since he was charming and sexy as hell, but he hadn't really expected her to have a change of heart.

Haera glared at him for a moment before smirking. "Always a bitch, I will never not be a bitch and if I am not a bitch then something is possibly wrong." She said and sat up. "And you will forever be a pain in my ass, kid." She said. They sat in silence for a bit before watching the sun go down. "I would ask if you are afraid of the dark, but you lived under a rock all your life." She said and watch the sun hit the horizon.

Istrain nodded slightly, smiling. "Definitely always a bitch," he agreed with a slight chuckle. He looked away from her, his hazel eyes shifting to watch the setting sun. It was spectacular to watch, and he was silent for a bit while he sank lower and lower. "Definitely not afraid of the dark," he said when she asked, shaking his head. "There's no more reason to fear the dark than the light. It's all the same, if you think about it, just sometimes it's easier to see."

Haera nodded, saying nothing for a while till it got dark and then realized they were just sitting there in the dark. She didn't do this with men unless it was Birger and they were hunting or killing someone... or just done with the catching up. Haera smirked at Birger before looking at where he was. "I mean... well yeah... but it would be easier to just push someone off the cliff and have no one see. You came so willingly without even being worried I would kill you. You damn dwarfs are too trusting." She said.

Istrain chuckled slightly, nodding. "You've got that right," he said. "But if you pushed me off the cliff, I'm fast enough to grab hold of you somewhere - anywhere - and take you down with me. Haera laughed a bit, "Damn your reflexes. Well you are alive if you can swim, that is the thing. But nah... I wouldn't kill you yet. I'm not bored of you yet." She said proudly, like it was something to be proud of in the first place. "But... I could push you off... and pretend I jumped in after you and say I saved you... and look like more of a hero." She said matter-of-factly. "I saw thats a win win for me. Then I will get all those hot ladies and guys you try so hard to get." She winked.

Istrain laughed, glancing her way. "I think we both know that if you came jumping in after me, it'd be because you don't want to get rid of me," he said with a wink, though he wasn't sure if she'd see it now that darkness was descending over the island. "And who's to say I won't push you over first? Maybe I'll get bored with you and decide I've lost interest in the competition?" He knew that he was too good to simply kill her in cold blood, but she didn't need to know that - assuming, of course, that she hadn't figured it out on her own. He wouldn't be surprised if she had.
