Tathyldras "Tate" Smith

a character in “Veritas Isle”, as played by FyreT1ger

Description

Name: Tathyldras “Tate” Smith
Age: 55 looks 20
Race: Fae-touched human

Appearance: He stands six feet (2m) tall with wavy light brown hair just past his broad shoulders, usually pulled into a ponytail. Though he is human, strange magic gave him pointed ears, and he has no body hair either. Other traits associated with Fae and Elves don’t apply to him though. His skin is tanned and weathered from much travel. He bears a hammer and anvil tattoo on his right bicep and wears a woven gold and silver chain on his neck with three gemstones, fire opal, emerald, and sapphire.

History: Tate was the eldest child and only son of a well-to-do human blacksmith in another country. By a strange twist of fate, he was taken to the faerie world as a child and escaped, though he wasn’t unchanged. As with all those who enter Faerie Realms, the mundane world loses a bit of its luster, if one ever returns to it. In Tate’s case, he both lost and gained. He lost an appetite for anything with salt in it and his ignorance of the hidden world, but he gained new allies and knowledge and abilities he didn’t have before.

After he left the faerie mound, creatures known only in myth or completely lost from human memory started showing up around him, seeking him out. Some came to kill the abomination they believed Faerie magic turned him into, but others came to him for help. Both types carried him on strange paths.

Because like calls to like, he too sought out other Fae-touched humans. Through them and the creatures that were friendly to him at least, he gained knowledge and strength. He learned what of the human food would still satisfy his hunger, and although it also would shut down any Fae abilities he gained, he could still pursue his family’s trade. Faeries, most faeries, can’t stand iron, but as a blacksmith, iron is his primary medium.

One Faerie gift was not removed with iron. Faerie Magic extended his lifespan, and slowed his aging. Unfortunately, this would eventually cost him all his human connections, except the Fae-touched. His extended lifespan allowed him to master more than one trade, but he only joined the guild of one of those trades, the blacksmith’s guild, the same guild his human father would be a member, if he ever found him again. He missed his human family, and sometimes even the Fae that raised him, but as he was he couldn’t fully be a part of either, which troubled him.

So begins...

Finally it was over. He could finally stop worrying about werewolf territory disputes and evil wizards. Why did the werewolves ask him anyway? Didn't they have a wolf elder council or something? They did last time he dealt with werewolves, but maybe the evil wizard was outside their jurisdiction. Both wizards and werewolves usually keep to themselves.

He silenced the questions and put them in the back of his mind. It was over. He did what he had to do, his infernal geass was satisfied. That's the only reason he could think so many creatures suddenly wanted his attention. It's over, it's over. He repeated in his mind and turned to his map. At least he won't have to hide who he is at his latest stop. The information he had on the place said it was home to a number of fae and mythical creatures. He worried about the fae population though. Despite still having a taste for faerie food and the familiar human longing for life within it, he didn't want to go back. He knows what it costs and can no longer bear the price.

A dragon escorted him to the floating archipelago, and now he stood in the main island's central city. He gave the dragon a gold bracelet for his hoard by way of thanks and officially entered. Long life had its advantages. Then he took a deep breath and walked to the town's inn.

Inside the lobby, a young girl, no woman, sat behind the desk reading a book. She would be considered a child by fae standards, and his too considering he was older than he looked, but she was a human young woman. "Excuse me," he spoke English, but had a strange lilting accent. He just hoped it was understood. "I would like a room for the night, please."

Ofelia had finished her third round of rides for the day and it was time to give the dragons a rest before sending them flying again to carry more passengers on and off the floating island. So she went about her normal business. She refreshed the water supply for her dragons, checked on her small dragon eggs, and fed the new hatch-lings that had emerged just two days before.

Once she was finished these chores she moved on to her next task, a couple had asked her to make reservations at the hotel for them, as they would be traveling back to the island in a few days and wanted to be sure they would be able to get a room. So she set off from the ranch into town, stopping by the general goods store and picking up a few groceries. She paid and carried her single bag out with her to the short walk to the hotel. Once she arrived she wiped her feet on the man and entered the building. It wasnt long before she realized that River was already speaking to a customer. Ofelia stepped up to the counter next to the man River was assisting and greeted River politely.

Tate twisted and untwisted the straps of the knapsack over his broad shoulders while he waited for the girl to respond. He wondered if she understood him and started to repeat himself, but she looked up and smiled at him before he could speak. He smiled back and nodded to her question. "Yes, it's just me."

Someone stepped beside him and he flinched away a step. The pale skin and pointed ears, made him fear some of his fae opponents caught up to him. After a moment, he realized she was an elf not a faerie. He took a deep breath, collecting his wits again, and gave her a smile too. "Good day, miss." He wasn't comfortable saying any more yet, so he turned back to the clerk.

Ofelia greeted the man who seemed started by her presence. "Good afternoon, Sir." She said with a small bow. She wondered if she might have accidentally snuck up on the man, causing him to startle when he saw her. Though she also thought that, perhaps, he had been deep in thought and simply did not realize that she had entered the building. She thought to herself that the man had a strange accent, though she didnt think too much of it, as many of her customers were from far away lands and many had accents.

Ofelia nodded when River spoke to her. "Take your time, I'm not in any hurry! I have got at least another hour before i need to be back at the boarding station to ready the dragons for flight" She said quickly. She didnt want River to think she had to rush anything. Ofelia pulled out a small box of chocolates that she had gotten from the confectionery and opened it up. There were about twelve different kinds of chocolate truffles inside. Ofelia looked them over for a few seconds and then picked up a white chocolate truffle in the shape of a sea shell and popped it in her mouth, only to quickly regret her decision. She had unknowingly picked a truffle filled with coconut, a flavor she hated, and her face definitely showed her disgust.

The clerk giggled at his expense causing a pink flush to bloom under his tan, but he quickly hid it by pretending his worn brown boots were so much more interesting than anything else going on around him. As he traced the cracks, and scuffs in the leather with his eyes, he noted that he should probably get new ones while in town. Then he'll need a day or two to break them in. No way would he walk miles in brand new boots.

Even though he wasn't looking, he heard what she said, and looked up again. He raised his eyebrows, and said, "A dragon trainer? You don't meet those every day." He studied her while she was eating chocolate. She ate a white shell one and made a face. He gave a half-laugh of his own, but looked away again.

The clerk asked him how many nights he needed the room. He normally didn't stay long in one place because of his situation, but he was able to answer without further problems. "Four nights." Even though he didn't know how long he would be free of the demands of his suspected geass, he did know he needed to resupply and that would take some time.

(We are going to be doing a short time skip as bizarre 1 is no longer active and I can not reach them)

Ofelia waited until river had finished up with the foreign man's needs and then reserved her customers a room for the requested dates. She said thank you and bowed to both river and the man she had just met and bid them farewell. She then began her rather long walk back to he dragon ranch to tend to the small dragons and hatchlings.

When Ofelia arrived in the dragon nursery she found that one of the young dragons had completely destroyed her table and chairs. She sighed deeply and scooped the culprit up. " I guess it's time for you to join the adolescents..You little trouble maker!" Ofelia chuckled slightly at the goat sized dragon she was carrying. She took him out to the pasture he kept the adolescent dragons in, and after checking for aggressive behavior from any of them, she shut the gate and began walking the property line between her farm and the neighboring families land. " I suppose I will have to order a new set of chairs and a table soon.." she shook her head.

Ofelia continued to walk the property line, looking for any dragons that might have crossed into her neighbor's land, as it had happened before and was not a pleasant deal.

It didn't take much longer to finish his business, to his relief. The two young women no longer laughed at him and neither seemed upset, which was just what he needed to get his equilibrium back. He collected his key, smiled and nodded his head to each in farewell and followed directions to his room.

He dropped his knapsack on the floor at the foot of the bed, without even bothering to unpack. The energy required didn't seem worth it. Instead, he flopped on the bed and closed his eyes. It had been a long day already and he was tired. Maybe he would get supplies tomorrow, if he was still here then.

Still here! His eyes shot open. All the thoughts surrounding that phrase took over his mind. No, he can't sleep yet. He pushed his tired body up and got off the bed to kneel next to his knapsack. He opened it and pulled out thick gloves, much too thick for the mild weather. Covering his hands with the heavy gloves, he pulled out a salt shaker from the front pocket, not touching any of his clothes or other necessities, and sprinkled a little salt on the windowsill.

He paused in front of the window and looked out over a park in the town. A young woman and a number of children and teens ran around with a ball. Tate was careful not to touch the salted windowsill, but he smiled at the scene, until the eldest player shouted something about being a million years old. He trembled and backed away. He sat on the ground next to the window. How could it be? How did they find him? How did they get here?

Tate drifted deep into his panic, trembling and feeling his age more than he had in a while. He scrambled around the room scattering more salt and snatching up his things. Just as he thought he finished, a knock came to the door and he froze. "Mr. Smith, would you like to come down to the dining hall for dinner or have it here?" Dining hall? Mr. Smith. There was no ancient power behind the name, but neither would his enemies call him Mr. Smith.

He didn't answer right away. First, he considered his options. His guest, perhaps another worker at the inn, didn't try to break in, but simply waited. With his emotions and senses on high alert, he still felt the person's presence on the other side of the door. He sprinkled salt on all the exit points already, though it would be another thing he had to pick up in town. He wrinkled his nose, not too keen on the thought. Since he left the faerie mound, he didn't like salt any better than the faeries themselves. He had something of an allergic reaction to it, but he always kept some on hand as a precaution. "I'll take my meals here, if you don't mind."

"As you wish, sir." Then the presence left and Tate took a deep breath and fell back to the bed.
"Wait!" He moved to a sitting position and called back, "I can't eat anything with salt in it, I'm allergic."
"Allergic to salt?"
"Yes!"
"I'll see what I can do, sir."

Tate would later have to explain his room, but for now he stayed put. He got up to the window again and saw the woman still running around. Well, If she was who she said she was, she hadn't noticed him yet. He went back to the bed, dropped off his bag and replaced the salt shaker. Then he left the gloves next to it.

The game continued on, the smaller kids of course were of course the first ones to go out from the teens. They made sure to throw their balls softly against them of course and it was soon down to the more larger teens...and the woman? She was still in the fight smiling with her ball still in her hand.

As soon as she spotted one of the teens run past her tree, she whistled and got his attention. She soon laughed as she readied her ball. "Muhahahaha! How unfortunate you have laid your eyes upon me! Prepare to face the mighty Comic Throw!" She pulled her arm back as the kid dropped his ball in surprise and shielded himself.

The ball sailed through the air...and it began to slow down...and then it hit the ground and just...rolled by his foot...The woman, or at the very best the good looking man blinked multiple times as she watched this. "Ahahaha!...I knew my Cosmic Throw was too powerful so...I had to reduce its power as to prevent a massive explosion! So...You are out!" She crossed her arms and gave a proud smile. The kid of course believed her story and slowly nodded as he went over to the side.

She gave a deep sigh as he bought her lie. That was totally planned, she may not be that physically fit but she was a great actor. Maybe after the game she can get some sweets for free? Free sweets were always a tasty treat. For now she decided to stay behind her tree as the other teens began to take each other out of the game. She did not notice the man looking at her, but of course she was more busy with her game of dodgeball.

Altas had woken up very early in the morning, and was typically up far before the sun ever was. He needed to prepare for his day of work at his Cafe. He had baking to do, dough to knead, cookies to decorate, whipped cream to make, and a lobby to clean. He wiped down the counters as he hummed a soft tune. Next he moved onto the plates and trays. And finally when it was nearly opening time he decorated roughly two hundred macaroon cookies, just in time to open the door for his first costumer of the day.

Though his cafe a was only open until just after noon, he had plenty of business. He had earned the patronage of a good amount of the residents of Veritas Isle, as he offered fair prices for delicious coffee drinks and pastries. Those Island residents told newcomers and tourists of their favorite bakery, and before he knew it, Atlas' cafe had exploded with business. Today was a terribly busy day though, Atlas ran around taking orders, making coffee, and serving up treats with a calm collected demeanor, and of course a smile, stopping to talk to patrons when he was able. Just as he felt overwhelmed his help for the day arrived to relieve him of taking orders and doling out the pastries. Atlas took over the coffee station, it was his passion after all, here he felt relaxed and in his zone. He could see across the way from his coffee shop, that people were playing a rather vigorous game of dodge ball. He shook his head with a slight chuckle. "Get the cold brew going!" He shouted to one of his employees, who started the cold brew immediately.

The game of dodgeball continued, at the woman hid behind her tree is safety more of the kids continued to eliminate each other until eventually all that remained was one more. Of course he had no idea there was one person left and stuck his arms in the air shouting "Victory!"

Of course busy celebrating his victory, the woman slinked from behind her tree and quietly snuck behind the teen. Ball ready to beam him however she soon smiled and laughed behind him. "Unfortunately this is my victory. It so happens that I, the great and ancient being is left. It is a great honor to face me in a duel, however victory shall be mine this day!" She spoke proudly as the teen went wide eyed.

She simply pulled her arm back making it appear that she would throw it right at him, but she ended up bonking him on the head. "Bonk!" She smiled proudly as she tossed her ball to the side and threw her own arms into the air. "I win! That was really fun!" She suddenly exclaimed as she jumped up and down in excitement.

Of course, what better way to celebrate a victory with something tasty. Like some food drinks and sweets. There was a café nearby so obviously it had food! WIth her destination set she began to skip her way to get some food.

After the inn worker left, Tate tried to calm himself. He got off the bed and watched some more of the crazy ball game, but the woman who claimed to be a million years old still hadn't recognized his presence, which was fine with him. He did want a break from dealing with the whims of others, and he especially didn't want any attention whatsoever from his enemies. It's hard to avoid attention when you are making a name for yourself in dealings with mythical creatures. A reputation, even a good one, can easily catch the attention of those who want to destroy you. He shuddered at the thought, and turned away from the window again, pacing the room.

He paced until things outside went quiet and then he checked the window again. No sign of any ball players now. The adrenaline that kept him from resting faded by now too. He lay down on the bed and fell asleep.

He woke again to another knock on the door. His food was probably ready by now. This time he actually opened the door. The worker at the door looked like an anxious young man, younger than even Tate himself looked, if he judged correctly. The man’s eyes darted around the room, but for some reason never met Tate’s own. “Is everything okay in here, sir?”

Tate paused and looked around himself. He flushed lightly at the sight. Salt was scattered all over the room, worse than some people’s dust bunnies. “The container broke and spilled. I’ll get a new one and clean it up if you’ll let me borrow a broom and dust pan.”
“You don’t have to do that, sir, you’re a guest.”
“I don’t mind cleaning up my own messes.”

Before there was another one, or the young boy could argue further, Tate took his plate from the boy’s hands. There wasn’t much on it, and he figured that’s what made him so anxious. A salt allergy was very difficult to understand for most people, for it was both a preservative and a spice, and the cheapest available to most.

The kitchen boy started shaking and Tate took his hand. “Really it’s okay. I know salt is a weird allergy. This is perfectly fine.” He held the boy’s hand and met his darting eyes, forcing him to look at him. “What’s your name?”
“Simon.”
“Thank you, Simon, I will enjoy my dinner.” Then he let the shaking Simon loose and took a seat in an armchair.

He ate the fruit salad and roll and set the dish outside the door to pick up. Since he calmed down from his fright, he decided to take a walk outside the inn. Since he spent so much of the day hiding, he thought he needed to get out. He still needed to know where the shops were, since he was new in town.

{{{Okay We are going to skip ahead about three weeks in story to the day before the summer festival, to get some things moving along! So as of this post it is now the day before the summer festival. Thanks - Fauna}}}

Ofelia

Ofelia was hard at work making sure her song for the summer festival was perfect, she had been practicing the song say and night in between her other duties. Today was a huge day for her business as he offered more trips to the island than she usually did, since her business was not open on the actual day of the festival so that she could enjoy the festivities. Ofelia didnt find herself quite as lonely as she usually did because in the past weeks she would often chit chat with Nasir when she brought dragons for Agis to play with. Even the friendly chit chat was an improvement in social skills for her, she started chit chatting with her customers more and seemed to be doing business better now that she was getting used to speaking in front of people, so when the mayors son came and asked her to sing at the festival before the fireworks, Ofelia felt she might actually be able to do it. So she had been practicing every day since.

Rowan

It was finally the day before the festival and Rowan was busier than ever, he had places to run, people to see, and plans to finalize and check over before the day was done. Luckily there hadnt been any snares in planning yet and most of his check ins went smoothly. The cafe was providing hot drinks and sweets, the tavern was providing alcoholic beverages for the adults attending, and the dragon girl had agreed to sing a the ceremony before the fireworks were to start. The local fire station would be on hand to control any accidents as well. The various shops around the island agree to open shops for a short time where they offered discounted prices for their wares, and he had people arriving in the morning to set up games and prizes that the tourists would absolutely love. Rowan decided it was about time for a break around four in the evening and went over to papoa lake to do some fishing.

Tate had been in the city for a week before he was pulled away again by one of those mythics that seem to stalk him. A week was a good length of time to recover from his last quest though. He spent his gold on the supplies he needed, and had enough time to break in the new brown leather boots.

The strangest thing is he actually came back. He was a little worse for wear, sporting a new scar under his right eye and holding his left hand in a sling, but he came back to Veritas.

In the two weeks he's been gone, an awful lot more people arrived. Because of that, he barely managed to find space at the inn. When he did, he still spent more time in his room than out of it, just because the crowds overwhelmed him. He’s been alone most of his life and couldn’t get used to it. This many people should keep his enemies from open attack though, so he forced himself to go outside. He hugged his injured arm protectively as he walked the city. He noted some decorations and booths out in the street. Some kind of fair? That would explain the crowds. Nothing draws people out like a party.
