Kel jolted up as he was hit with the sudden realization that he had to go shopping. The tavern was out of several things that he used for making appetizers and other snacks that went well with his various drinks and brews. He ran up into his room and threw on a light blue, sleeveless button down shirt and strapped up a pair of sandals. As he went out the door, Cire was sitting by the door waiting anxiously.
"Okay, Cire, I've gotta run to the market and pick up a few things." Cire started jumping with excitement.
"No. You don't get to go with me." He scolded. Cire let out a growl in protest.
"Because the shops don't allow animals in them."
He let out another growl.
"Don't lie to me. We both know you won't stay outside. You'll see or smell something that will distract you and you'll end up running around in some shop and getting in trouble. I don't want a repeat of the fish market incident. Stay here and guard the house and, if you're a good kitty, I'll bring you home a treat." Cire seemed to understand and went to lie down by the garden gate and watched the door.

Kel walked to the city as quick as he could, he knew he had a few hours before he had to open the tavern, so he knew that once he got there he would have plenty of time to relax and find the best produce and ingredients for the tavern. As he was walking to the market he passed by a small coffee and pastry shop. The aroma wafting into the air was sweet and intoxicating to the point where he had to stop in his tracks. He peered in and was a little disappointed by the sing on the counter saying "Drip coffee only", but it smelled so good even that would be amazing. The pastries looked amazing as well. He couldn't resist the call anymore. He went inside and ordered a slice of the chocolate cheesecake and a large cup of the drip coffee from the person at the counter. He sat down in a corner seat near the window and did some people watching while eating. He noticed a girl that seemed to be close to his age, maybe younger, chowing down on a big spread of sweets covering her table and he also noticed two young men sitting at another table one was another elf and the other looked human. He could see by the subtle smiles and averted gazes that there was something brewing between them. He smiled, he wished he could find something like that too, but for now he was happy with his cheesecake. He ate slowly as he watched the people in the cafe and savored each bite. The texture of the cheesecake was as smooth as velvet and the chocolate sauce was rich and sweet. The coffee was the perfect pallet cleanser as well; it was fragrant, not too bitter and the perfect strength. "I should come in here every time I go to the market." he muttered to himself. "This place is awesome."
He caught the smell of the thyme and lemon and heard the human mention that it was a new recipe for the cookies he had made. His apothecary instinct struck without warning.
"Lavender goes best with lemon." He muttered under his breath. He knew they probably tasted great, but his apothecary instinct kicked in and as quickly as he had muttered the words, he wanted to take them back. Luckily, it seemed as though neither of them had heard what he said and before long the human began to clean things up. He was a bit relieved that he hadn't embarrassed himself, but his face was still bright red as he sipped his coffee.

Elwin was shocked when Atlas grabbed his hand to shake it. It was soft, but the grip was a comfortable. He smiled, "I might come again later tonight. Thanks for the lovely time." He walked out, smiling and nodded at the guy that had came in late before opening the door and looking back at Atlas as he cleaned. Elwin didn't look for too long before walking out. The sun glared at him, just like people did growing up. He tied his hair up and began for home.

I am going to get you out of that damn village and you will have a normal life. It is the least I can do for you, you have given me a peace of mind growing up, always getting into fights with the kids for picking on me. You deserve the best. Elwin walked with his head held high, just like Roshia taught him.

Atlas read his book until it was just after four O' clock in the afternoon. He closed his book and sighed heavily, then stood up and stretched before he began to trek back to the Cafe to prepare the desserts for the night. During the night the cafe had different dessert options such as chocolate souffle, rich puddings, mousse cakes and ice-creams as well as treats flavored with spirits, such as rum pudding and bourbon chocolate cake. Atlas worked until it was about six in the evening before the different confections were ready before he wiped down tables and straightened up one last time before opening the doors again. He made sure that the open sign was flipped and headed back to his station behind the counter, and just as he did, two of his employees came to even out the work load and take over should Atlas need to run out for something. Almost immediately the cafe started filling in with a steady line of customers, most getting things to go as dessert for their families.

Elwin walked down towards the cafe. He was going to order his drink and a dessert. Then he was going to sit in his regular seat and hopefully get a chance to talk to Atlas. You can do this. Have confidence. Just think of this mission as tackling a dress design. You can do anything. Ros says you can, then you can. He gave himself a pep talk until he reached the door. He saw Atlas talking to a customer. He was smiling that kind smile that made his heart skip a beat. Roshia better take good care of him.

He opened the door gently and walked up to the counter. "Told you I would come back," he smiled, "could I possible have that hazelnut coffee iced? And that delicious looking strawberry danish." Elwin pointed towards one of the danishes, looking up at Atlas.

Atlas was happily chatting away happily with one of his customers when a familiar red headed man walked into the Cafe. Atlas finished up with the few customers that were ahead in the line and smiled at Elwin. "Well, I certainly didnt expect to see you back so soon. Missed me did you?" He teased with a wink. He grabbed the pastry for Elwin and set it on a plate "Do you want it warmed?" he asked as he began preparing the iced coffee for him. "Let me know when you plan on heading out, I'll make a tea for you to take home to your sister, no charge, just let me know what kind she likes" He said with a smile as he handed Elwin his iced coffee.

Elwin tried hard not to blush. "Well, your coffee has me hooked, what can I saw." He said as he watched Atlas do his job so smoothly. "Warm, please." He was feeling a small high, maybe his sister was right, maybe he had a chance. Then he mentioned Roshia and that high fell flat. Right, you are here for Roshia. He is for Roshia, not yourself, Elwin.

"Will do, thank you." he smiled, "It looks a little busy, let me get out of your hair." He was nervous, but his smile never wavered.

Kel put away the book he had been reading and decided he had been waiting long enough. He walked outside, Cire was still chewing on the bone from the steak trying to scrape off as much meat as he could. He lit the light on his porch so he would be able to see when he got home.

"Okay, Cire, I'll see you later tonight."

He followed the trail up to the city then before he knew it he was back at the cafe. It seemed to be a quicker walk at night. He walked in and saw the elf from earlier in the day in line right next to him. He also noticed the same human working behind the counter that had been chatting with the elf. It was clear that there was something between them, but Kel felt bad for listening in on them once more. He went up to the counter.
"I'll take a the a slice of the bourbon chocolate cake and a large mint herbal iced tea." He cheerfully gave his order to the other clerk helping at the counter.
The clerk got his order for him and he went to the a table near the book shelves and sat down. He sipped his tea as he looked at the tittles of the various books available to read. He saw a book titled Rare Herbs of the Veritas Floating Islands and their Practical Uses. He grabbed it off the shelf and began to read. He couldn't help but notice the red haired elf swooning over the human. He wished there was something he could do to help bring the two together, but he knew he would just mess it up and most likely get himself hurt in the process.

He took a bite of cake and hoped he might at least work up the nerve to talk to someone.

Atlas smiled and nodded to Elwin. "I'll bring it out to you when its warmed up" He said and then continued his work. He toook a few more orders and made some more drinks, careful not to forget Elwins pastry. A few moments later Atlas retrieved the Danish from the oven. He grabbed a scoop of vanilla bourbon ice cream in a dish and brought it out for him. "I dont know if you're into this kind of thing, but its vanilla bourbon ice cream, other customers have said it pairs well with the warm danish" He said as he put the danish and ice cream in front of him. "Hows the iced coffee?" He asked. Just as he had asked that the store manager for the night had walked in, Atlas nodded to him as a hello then turned his attention back to Elwin.

Elwin had taken his seat and watched people outside walk by, What do I have to do to be as happy as them? The door jingle caught his attention and he looked to see who walked in. It was the same guy as before, Guess he likes the food and drinks here too. Or he is stalking someone. I won't judge. Elwin took a sip of his coffee and just like earlier he was in love.

Atlas walked up with his danish and ice cream, "I don't know if you're into this kind of thing, but it's vanilla bourbon ice cream, other customers have said it pairs well with the warm danish" Elwin looked up watched as his food was set on the table.

If the people love it, it has to be good. I will be honest though it has been a good minute since I have had ice cream. Oh and the coffee is lovely. He said. Atlas had looked away and Elwin took the opportunity to take a bite. The people were right, the ice cream went well with the danish. Just as he took the bit, Atlas looked back. All Elwin could do was smile with the spoon of food in his mouth.

Atlas chuckled at the sight of Elwin looking up at him with the spoon in his mouth. "You need not be shy about eating around me. Enjoy your treats as if i weren't here." He said with a reassuring voice and a soothing smile on his face, his eye glowing softly in the dim lighting as the oil candles around them danced. He sat down across from Elwin and propped his head up on his hand, tilting his head slightly. "So, about that sister of yours. She didnt wish to come out tonight huh? I suppose it is rather busy tonight. To be honest i'm about ready to leave" He chuckled slightly. Atlas was drained from making pastries and he felt it wasnt necessary for him to stick around with the store manager here. "Mmm..Perhaps I'll go shopping for a new ingredient to try in a cake or something..." He said, more or less talking to himself than to Elwin. He ended up getting lost in though, accidentally ending up staring at Elwins hair. He soon snapped out of it. "Oh, im sorry! I didnt mean to stare, I just get so captivated by the way the oil lamps light catches your red hair. I do apologize, it was awfully rude." He said bowing his head.

Elwin slide the fork out and covered his mouth as he chewed. He was so embarrassed. Swallowing he watched as Atlas took a seat in front of him once again. "So, about that sister of yours. She didn't wish to come out tonight huh? I suppose it is rather busy tonight. To be honest i'm about ready to leave" He chuckled. He is talking about Roshia again. Good. Though he felt horrible in the back of his mind. Ah yeah, she has to go out hunting tomorrow, I think. She wasn't too clear as to what she had to do tomorrow.

Elwin let him stare. It made him feel good and he liked the attention. It is okay, a lot of people like my family's hair. We have a range of blondes and reds. He smiled. Oh, if you want you can come down to the village and see if we have anything you might like. We have fresh everything. He said over his coffee before sipping it. Then you can meet my twin sister.

" Oh i would love that! Do you have chickens? I currently have to get my eggs from off of the island, shipped to me...I'll come with, but let me get your sisters tea ready first. What does she like?" Atlas waited for an answer then stood up and walked back to the counter to make her tea. He carefully added just the right amount of each dry ingredient and tea and steeped them in the water for a very precise amount of time. He then poured it into a to go mug and returned to Elwin. "Lets get going shall we?" He said his eyes beaming with excitement.

Elwin blinked. He didn't think it would have worked so fast. He have himself an imaginary pat on his back for such a good job. Roshia would be so proud of him. You go, Elwin. Doing well! "We do, we have pretty much every animal that is on these islands, except for wildlife... life deer and such, but Roshia hunts with our father. Let's see, it is the afternoon so she would be probably want something calming, so you pick. I am sure she would love it." He got up and walked to the counter. He could see Atlas was excited, Oh god, what if he is desperate for someone. What if he isn't this happy about the chickens and more so about getting to Roshia? Eh, he will be in the middle of our village. If he got weird they had the whole family. "Of course, let's go." He held the cup and opened the door, letting him walk out first.

After the inn worker left, Tate tried to calm himself. He got off the bed and watched some more of the crazy ball game, but the woman who claimed to be a million years old still hadn't recognized his presence, which was fine with him. He did want a break from dealing with the whims of others, and he especially didn't want any attention whatsoever from his enemies. It's hard to avoid attention when you are making a name for yourself in dealings with mythical creatures. A reputation, even a good one, can easily catch the attention of those who want to destroy you. He shuddered at the thought, and turned away from the window again, pacing the room.

He paced until things outside went quiet and then he checked the window again. No sign of any ball players now. The adrenaline that kept him from resting faded by now too. He lay down on the bed and fell asleep.

He woke again to another knock on the door. His food was probably ready by now. This time he actually opened the door. The worker at the door looked like an anxious young man, younger than even Tate himself looked, if he judged correctly. The man’s eyes darted around the room, but for some reason never met Tate’s own. “Is everything okay in here, sir?”

Tate paused and looked around himself. He flushed lightly at the sight. Salt was scattered all over the room, worse than some people’s dust bunnies. “The container broke and spilled. I’ll get a new one and clean it up if you’ll let me borrow a broom and dust pan.”
“You don’t have to do that, sir, you’re a guest.”
“I don’t mind cleaning up my own messes.”

Before there was another one, or the young boy could argue further, Tate took his plate from the boy’s hands. There wasn’t much on it, and he figured that’s what made him so anxious. A salt allergy was very difficult to understand for most people, for it was both a preservative and a spice, and the cheapest available to most.

The kitchen boy started shaking and Tate took his hand. “Really it’s okay. I know salt is a weird allergy. This is perfectly fine.” He held the boy’s hand and met his darting eyes, forcing him to look at him. “What’s your name?”
“Simon.”
“Thank you, Simon, I will enjoy my dinner.” Then he let the shaking Simon loose and took a seat in an armchair.

He ate the fruit salad and roll and set the dish outside the door to pick up. Since he calmed down from his fright, he decided to take a walk outside the inn. Since he spent so much of the day hiding, he thought he needed to get out. He still needed to know where the shops were, since he was new in town.

It was a typical morning for Rowan, he spent most of it signing papers, running around the island shops to make plans and arrangements for the upcoming festival, and sneaking off when he could to explore the wild smaller islands that surrounded Veritas city. Before noon he was expected at lunch with his father, the mayor of Veritas Isle, a man loved by many of its inhabitants. Rowan was expected to run for mayor when his father retired, however, Rowan despised the idea. He wanted to travel, see monsters, and explore the wonders of Veritas Isle. He didnt much care for the politics of it either. He liked his job as the Cities festival coordinator. He got to see the people of the Isle and interact with them. And most of all, his life wasnt under a microscope like his fathers is. Rowan didnt care to be watched for any little mistake.

At lunch his father gave him the usual talk. Get married, run for Mayor, Lead Veritas Isle like he dreamed his son would. Rowan knew at this point to just smile and nod when his father spoke about things such as this. "No use in arguing about it again" He thought to himself. Once lunch was over Rowan went back around to the shops to ask about participation and donations for the Summer festival. Many businesses used the day as an opportunity to gain more business by offering sales or samples that they normally didnt. Rowan worked until late in the evening then headed out to one of the Isles lakes for some afternoon fishing. He cast his line and fished for a good while.

Elwin enjoyed the walk to Atlas' cafe/home. It was quiet and not many people were out and about. He had wondered if that is why Roshia and their father would wake up early. In his family quiet only happened when they were asleep. They got to his house and he froze when the cat stared at him, hoping Atlas was right, but he was. The cat purred and rubbed on his leg. "Elwin, this is Biscuit, Biscuit, this is Elwin." He said with a chuckle. "See? She likes you already" He said next before he told them that he would be back. Elwin nodded and waited till he was gone to squat down and pet the cat. It purred and rubbed against his hand, "Can't believe he named you after a food item, but then again he is a baker." Elwin said softly with a laugh. The cat stared up at him with a blank expression, which made him laugh a bit more. He stood back up again and looked around. It was kind of bland, minus the plants and flowers, compared to his house which was stocked with colorful fabrics and crafted stuff from his family memeber. Elwin bit the bottom corner of his lip trying to force back the memories of him and his sister.

Atlas finished getting dressed just in time to hear Elwins comment about the name of the cat. He stood in the doorway to his bedroom and said. "Well, i mean, i could have named her mittens." The cat shot Atlas a look of disgust and Atlas chuckled. "I know, i know. Youre not "one of those" cats. C'mon lets get you breakfast." He said as he walked to the kitchen and grabbed the cats food in a dish and set if out for her. She meowed loudly and ate her breakfast. "Alright, lets get going to the cafe then" He said and held the door open for Elwin. They went down to the kitchen in the cafe, which was absolutely huge and Atlas started pulling bowls and whisks and piping bags from the neatly packed cupboards. He set the oven temps and washed his hands, telling Elwin to do the same.

First he taught elwin how to make a simple vanilla cake batter, and then a simple chocolate, then let him do the lemon completely by himself. "See not too hard right?" Atlas asked looking at Elwin.

Elwin looked up at the now dressed Atlas and followed him to the kitchen. It was indeed big. Then Atlas started taking out bowls and he learned how to make cake that day, when he made the lemon he looked down at the bowl, "Can I eat the batter?" He asked looking up innocently at Atlas. The batter had smelled so good with each flavor, that his mouth was watering. He never did the baking, that was Ameria and his mother's doing. Not even Roshia baked... well not often like the other two.

"Well i mean its not going to kill you if you do, go right ahead" Atlas said with a chuckle. After Elwin had finished tasting the batter, Atlas poured them into cake molds and set them in the oven to bake. He made note of the time and decided to move onto frosting. "Well frosting is easy, its just powdered sugar, milk, and flavoring. Here, I'll make a flavor and then you make a flavor of your choosing that you think would go good on that lemon cake" He said. Atlas quickly whipped up a chocolate, coffee infused frosting to go on the chocolate cake and then watched as Elwin made his frosting.

Elwin took a small taste of the batter and made a face. It certainly did not taste as good as baked cake. "Now I see why my mother and Ameria never licked the spoon." He watched Atlas pour the cake into molds and place them into the oven. Elwin watched carefully before starting on his own. He was going to make an Amaretto flavor icing to go with the lemon cake. He held up the bowl to Atlas, "Does this taste okay? I was hoping to put it on the lemon cake." He was the child asking his teacher how his project was coming along. He honestly hoped it was alright and didn't kill Atlas in his own kitchen with too much flavoring.

Atlas watched Elwins face as he prepared his own cake and put it in the oven, he was actually taking things pretty seriously. He asked him to taste his frosting for his cake, Atlas nodded and took a sample of it, thinking for a minute. "Yup, tastes pretty good to me. Should pair nicely with the lemon cake. You're doing really well, especially for someone who doesnt know how to bake...Uh, so we have a little time before we cant take the cakes out of the oven, then we have to wait for them to cool off...So...What would you like to do until then?" Elwin watched as Atlas took a taste and blushed when he said he liked it and that it would go well with the lemon. "Yup, tastes pretty good to me. Should pair nicely with the lemon cake. Kiss, but like hell that would happen. He thought, but smiled and shook his head. "I know you have work to do and making these cakes for my family took up enough time. If you need me to do anything for you I am happy to help. Roshia says I am a great helper..." He looked down at his hands. Maybe I was never really a good helper after all. Atlas gave Elwin a chuckle. "Aww what a boring answer..I was hoping youd find something to keep me from having to work" He winked and then turned around and grabbed a tray of cookies and began decorating them with patterns and designs in icing, working on a few with one color then switching to the next tray with another color until they were finished. By the time Atlas had finished with the massive hoard of cookies it was time to take the cakes out and set them to cool. Atlas did just that, carefully setting them on cooling trays. "Well, did you think of anything yet?" He asked Elwin.

Elwin watched as Atlas again. He was beginning to feel like he watched the guy way too much and wondered if he was bothering Atlas. He moved away and looked at the empty cafe. It looked peaceful. He looked around the kitchen and stepped aside for him to get the cakes. "Uhm," He looked around, a bit nervous. "D-Do you have a book where you keep your recipes?" He asked.

D-Do you have a book where you keep your recipes? Elwin mocked himself for sounding so stupid. Ugh, I don't know what to do. I thought he would make me make cakes and like...put things in places. I don't know what to do!

Atlas smiled and shook his head. "Nope, they all live in my brain. Sometimes i forget them, but then i just end up making something new, so im not worried about it. I only write the big sellers down so that the part time pastry chef can make them if im not going to be stopping into the kitchen" He said. Elwin seemed bored so Atlas started thinking of things he could have him do. "Cream horns!" Atlas said. He ran to the fridge and picked up a huge piping bag full of cream and gave it to Elwin, then walked away and returned with cream horn shells. "Here, just pipe these full of cream and put a little swirl at the top and then sprinkle some chocolate shavings on top of the cream. If you need help just yell at me." He said before he crossed the kitchen to put a basket weave of dough on top of some pies that needed to get baked.
