Drake lifted a hand at Cleo’s mention of condolence, closing his eyes and dismissing her empathy rather quickly. “No need for that. I was very young... And besides, it’s in the past now,” he replied calmly. It was the humans who bothered him most, admittedly. Their craving for destruction as well as their ignorance to the life around them was something to be despised. That forest had more than his kind in it. There were trees and fauna, and they were killed in the blazing fire of murder as well. Homes and wildlife destroyed, and simply for the eradication of his species alone. It was nothing short of monstrous.
The boy’s eyes opened in surprise as the small fae girl continued to speak. So he was right. The Grove was real, and this girl seemed awfully willing to take him there. He was a little surprised at how easy that had been, actually. Perhaps even a little too easy.
Drake made a note to offer his assistance in guarding the Grove’s secret in the future. Perhaps he would accompany the fae girl from here on out. Keep an eye on her.
“Cleo?” he repeated, letting the name roll off his tongue. Memorizing it.
“Pleasure meeting you. My full name’s a bit of a mouthful. You can call me Drake.”
Drake Coleman.
His human name.
He had grown quite accustomed to it over the years and even became rather fond of it recently.
The boy followed suit, keeping his distance a bit as he still wasn’t sure if she was trustworthy yet. There was always the possibility that this was a trap, after all, and he wasn’t going to drop his guard now after coming all this way. Drake peered at the small girl with some degree of curiosity, however. She seemed rather young. Not quite as young as Kyle had been, but young nonetheless. “If you don’t mind me asking… How old are you?”
