The Twins

Ralph's eyes fluttered open as he registered the sounds of morning. He sat up, turned his body and found that Rafe too was awake. Ralph tilted his head and felt their silent connection. They lifted themselves out of bed and pulled on their clothes, matching of course. What fun was being identical twins if you couldn't laugh at the people who weren't competant enough to tell. Exiting their tent they looked around and saw that they were the first to awaken. Oh, that wouldn't do. That wouldn't do at all.

The boys rummaged through their bountiful, and seemingly useless supplies to find the perfect prank. What to do what to do? Ralph pulled a large plastic knife that look extremely realistic. He pressed down and the tip of the knife and the 'blade' retracted into the hilt. He grinned as Rafe pulled out a bag of fake blood. Oh, yes. The first 'death' of battle was to be very, very soon.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" screamed Rafe. He screamed and screamed until his troat was sore, people were started to groan and whine of being woken up in their tents. Ralph raced after Rafe, his grin gone crazy and the knife held like a murderer. They ran and ran around almost every tent, exculding any royalty, and woke just about everyone up. Time for a big finish. Rafe's faced plunged to the ground as he tripped and fell. "He's gone mad! He's gone MAD!" he yelled finally before Ralph plunged the knife down into his twin's gut. Blood spurted out and soaked the thin white shirt he wore. Rafe then dropped his knife and sank to the ground, tears falling from his eyes. "Brother, what have I done?" his whispered softly. People tried to come close but Ralph glared at them. At first laughter was heard, then suprise was seen on the faces of the people gathering around them. Was it a prank again? Were they joking? Surely not, Ralph cried real tears..?

The White Princess was agitated. One night. One night was all she'd asked for. One peaceful night of sleep without having to wake up to the games of the twins. Of course she loved them to death. But at that very moment she could have called upon the Red Queen to chop off their heads. She sat up, icy blue eyes narrowed. Her messy white hair was tangled and poofy, looking anything but princess-like. Then again, her attire wasn't at all princess-like either. She looked filthy - then again, most of her people did as well.

She stood and examined herself in the mirror. Running her fingers through her hair was the best she could do to fix her long locks. Moments later she decided to french-braid it. It still looked messy with tuffs popping out from her short layers, but even in such a state she was glowing, beautiful. The White Princess made her way through her gathering comrades to inspect what "damage" the twins had done this time. One appeared to be bleeding while the other was weeping. For a couple moments it looked as if she'd bought it. But their princess was much more clever than that.

"Ralph," Gracen said, leaning down to eye level. Her face was soft. But then it hardened. "Clean up this mess!" She ordered before turning on her heel and marching over to their table of maps.

Mizu, The Red Princess, was still sleeping, and was having some strange dream. The only thing in her dream was the color white, and then herself, and she had no idea why. It was strange, she hated white in the first place, so why would she dream about it? Her eyes flashed open as she woke up, and then she blinked as she looked back out into the real world. She sat up in her bed and looked around. Everything was normal and all, nothing interesting going on.

Mizu stood up and looked over herself in the mirror and then grabbed her brush and started to brush her hair. Even after brushing it for quite a while, it still looked messy, like usual. She would never be able to get it to be neat and straight, no matter how much she tried. Mizu set the brush down again and then changed into a black dress that was in her closet. She put on the black stockings and the red shoes that went with the dress and then headed out of her bedroom and into the wide halls of the palace.

"Good morning Princess." One of the maids said to the princess as she walked by. She bowed to the princess and then followed the princess as she walked. "Is there anything you will be needing this morning?"
"No, I'm fine. You can leave now." Mizu replied without even looking at her. The maid silently nodded and then walked walked off a different direction. Mizu walked over to Viktor's room and peeked inside to see if he was still sleeping. Apparently, he still was. Mizu closed the door carefully hoping not to awaken him and then walked around the palace bored. There was nothing to do. Nothing interesting ever went on in the palace usually, and most of the time she would just read a book or try to find someone to mess with.
Mizu walked over to a red chair and then sat down with a sigh. "It's so boring here..." she mumbled to herself as she looked around.

The white duchess woke up to the loud voices of the twins. She opened her eyes and rubbed them. She got up off of her bed like sleeping area and went over to a little table with brushes and ribbons. She looked in the mirror at her ugly attire and messed up hair. She was wearing what the princess was wearing. She knew that the princess didn't like the attire either. Marianne brushed her long blue hair so it was nice and pretty and put a blue rose in it. She also tied some ribbons in her hair. She got out of her tent to see a bunch of people huddled around the twins. Some laughing and some shocked. Then the princess came out and told them to behave. Anne giggled a little. Covering her mouth so it would be faded.

Marianne walked over to the twins and smiled at them brightly. With a shaky yet happy voice she greeted them," Hello Ralph, Rafe. Good morning." She blushed a bit then slowly waked over to the princess. "Hello my princess! How are you today!?" She smiled brightly to The princess awaiting another greeting.

The rising sun filtered in through the paned windows, setting her beloved's hair ablaze with red fire. Her long tresses mingled with his as their breathing rose and fell in unison. He slumbered still; the chiseled contours of his face, normally so intense in waking, relaxed and at peace within his dreams. Hazelle reached a slender finger up to gently brush away a silky russet strand that had fallen across his lips. How she adored those lips... his warmth... this temporal moment of serenity. If only it could last forever. Her content was yet again shattered, the waking world becoming painfully sharp; her thoughts touching upon the disquiet she would rather forget. Hazelle looked over her lover once more, yearning to stay within his strong embrace. Instead, she placed a soft kiss between his brows, and lifting his heavy arm, slid carefully away from him and off of the bed. Drawing the sheet lightly over his large form, Hazelle dressed silently and opened the windows to let in the fresh morning air, before departing hastily.

Reaching her room, Hazelle slammed the big mahogany doors shut, sliding down them to collapse on the floor. "Why?" She uttered softly. Why. Why now? Why her? Warm tears fell from her lashes; dripped, and stained her sheer nightrobe. Oh, thrice-cursed traitorous loins her's. Of all torments within the Red Kingdom, this was the most dreadful. Her small shoulders racked with broken sobs as she let her head fall to her knees. There she sat in wordless agony until the shaking ceased.

"Stop." Hazelle chastised, as she lifted herself up from the floor. A waste of tears to weep now. With trembling fingers Hazelle undid her robe, and let it drop to a pile at her feet. She stared at her reflection in the large wall mirror; two deep glistening green eyes staring back at her. Gradually her eyes traveled down over her creamy limbs, finally to halt at her stomach. It was indeed growing bigger; protruding at least an inch beyond her hips. Hazelle covered it with her long fingers; a great wave of emotions washing over her. She did not hate children; how could she when the Red Kingdom had so few? But there were other matters to consider... Vincent. Her archangelic Red Knight..... Her Lover. Though many long years had she been his; they were not wed. How could she have a child? Crule, unfaithful womb! Hazelle fought to swallow the apprehension that arose in her throat. How would she face him? Such a fiery man; so devoted to his other matters... No. She could not. She would not tell him of the child; she feared what action he might take. He could be rash sometimes... Very rash. Dispirited, Hazelle collapsed onto the chaise beside her window. It was a beautiful vista; the Red gardens awakening to the young rays of light, but it did little to lighten her heart. Such a poisonous, condemning secret to keep alone. For once, she could not confide in her only confidant.

Hazelle took a weak breath, shutting her eyes as the turmoil overwhelmed her, a somber song slipping forth unintentionally. Her wistful, lilting voice mixing with the cheerful birdsong of early morn.

So far away,
But still so close.
So many days
I’ve had to count.

The meaning of Life
Comes true when I’m with you;
For in me there’s a flower growing...

Tell him through the leaves I am here
Whisper through the breeze not to fear
Taste it by the rain what I feel when you hold me
Reach out for the winds that we share
Then you will feel I am near.
Taste it by the snow, I am here where you left me.

I told it to the mourning tree.

The long way home
Is never too far
Unless you’ve reached the end of life.

My deepest wish
Comes true when I’m with you;
For in me, there's a miracle growing.

I told it to the mourning tree...

Vincent's eyes shot open, then immediately squinted at the rays of the morning sun. He cracked his neck a few times, then noticed something was wrong. He felt.....colder, like heat had been taken away from his bed. He then looked over to find an empty impression upon his bed. Hazelle had left before he had woken, again. She had been doing this for the past few months and Vincent did not know why. He chalked it up to her weak mind and decided to get ready for the day. Vincent hauled himself out of bed and stood collecting himself while stark naked. He took in the crisp morning air, steeling his mind for the day to come. Who knows what his lord and lady would have him do this day? He needed to be ready for anything.

He waltzed over to his chiffarobe and began dressing himself. He adorned his day tunic and crimson suit, which showed off his abdomen, a sort of taunt to would be attackers. After dawning his boots and gloves, he then attached his blade to his belt. Ah, his blade. A true masterpiece, it was crafted for his hand by the finest smiths in all of the Red Kingdom. The Dragons Tongue, it was called. The hadndle pure black outlined in scarlett, meant to resemble a horned dragons head. Then the blade was pure crimson, it was light and it was sharp. A thing so beautiful forged to kill so many. Vincent laughed to himself while thinking about it. He then shook his head and realized there were more important things to do. He threw on his cape and he was out the door.

The Red Knight walked with cold proficiency down the hall of the castle, no expression on his face. His flaming hair billowed behind, making it seem he was ablaze. He reached his Lords room, but found he was still fast asleep. On any other day, he would wake him in a loud manor. Only he and the princess could do so without incurring his wrath. Though, last night was a stressful one for the prince. With the war almost upon the realm, he seemed to be nervous, so he thought it best to let him sleep.

As he walked down through a number of other halls until he came upon the sitting room. In a red chair sat his hearts desire. The red princess sat in front of him, her hair a mess, like always. What a wonderful mess it was, always unpredictable and never bowing, just like her. The attire she had on was a suggestive one, black lace to bring out the hidden desires of one self. By all the blood in his body, she was perfect. He quickly walked up to her and knelt in front of her, his eyes never leaving hers. "My lady, I hope this morning finds you well. Though I can see that your countenance has been plagued by something, sorrow? Is there anything i can do for you on this morn? Name anything and it shall be done. Anything to see a smile come back to your face."

Ralph lifted his head as the princess snapped at him. He stopped crying and rubbed the tears from his eyes. Reassured that it was in fact a pranks some people were laughing and others were frowning. Comedy was objective afterall, and their pranks were comedy gold. It was time for a big finish. He quickly tapped twice of Rafe's wrist, so subtle that no one would've noticed antything. Rafe began to cough and suck in air as if he were a vacuum. "Brother," choked out Rafe, "Brother, am I dead?" Ralph's tears returned and he laughed. He laughed and laughed, "No Rafe, dear sweet brother, you are still with us." He droped his head to Rafe's chest so that he was in a position almost like a bow and lay there. Rafe responded by lifting his twin's head and placing a kiss on his forehead. Brotherly love indeed.

Ralph picked Rafe up and carried him like a child back towards their tent. Once inside they broke out in laughter. "Brother, brother, oh dear sweet brother. What have I done? Oh *sniffle sniffle*" mimiced Rafe, "Oh Ralph. Sometimes even I am suprised at the ingenius of our pranks. Shall we go see what the princess and the duchess thought?" Rafe stripped off his fake-blood covered shirt and pulled on a shirt identical to Ralph's. "Yes brother, I think we shall." They marched out of the tent and towards the table full of maps. "Good morning, ladies. You both look ravishing this morning." said the twins in sync.

Gracen was ruffling through the maps and plans. In three days they were going to attack the Red Kingdom and she still didn't have the correct maps to show which ways they were going. It was irritating that they were so unprepared. She looked up at Marianne with tired icy blue eyes. "Good morning," she greeted. "I'm doing fine. Tired, but fine. I'm worried that our scouts aren't back with the maps yet. They left several days ago."

The scouts had always proven useful when she needed things to be done outside of their underground base. But this time, she was worried that they wouldn't return. The White Princess played with a strand of hair that had fallen from her braid. "We have to go up and draw the maps if they aren't back in the hour," she murmured, more to herself than to Marianna at all. They couldn't just sit and wait. This was war. And was wasn't patient.

The Cheshire Cat was sitting on the Red Duchess's bed, listening to her song with pure delight. The woman was upset and it was very clear why. When the song was over, Celeste clapped for her. She had a very delightful voice. And it was pain-filled. How beautiful. "That was marvelous, dear Duchess," she said, kicking back and using her hands to prop of her head. Moments later she was floating above the bed, and then over to be beside the young lady. "But if I were you, I'd keep that baby a secret," she said with a Cheshire smile. "I won't tell anybody. What a wonderful secret it is, though."

Viktor awoke to the world with the sun shining in his face. He sat up in bed with a yawn and a smile on his face. Today was going to be a good day, he assured himself. Then again, when were the days ever bad? Always. They'd always been bad. But that was the past and this was the present--or was it the future? Shrugging at his strange, groggy early-morning thoughts, he dressed himself in proper attire to match his princely self. He checked himself over in the mirror and nodded approvingly as he ran a hand through his spiked hair. Perfect, just as a prince should be. Just as he was.

He walked down the hall and, in a second's time, a butler was at his side offering him biscuits and tea. He waved away the tea, as it wasn't time for that yet, but took the biscuit. Viktor would rather sit down and relax while drinking his tea rather than be up walking around as he was now. "Thank you," he said politely to the butler who merely blinked at him in surprise from the unexpected words of kindness. Viktor's eyes narrowed. "Now shoo fly." The butler's look of surprise quickly melted away and he gave the prince a bow and continued on quickly down the hall towards the kitchen to prepare their meals for the day. "What should we do today?" Viktor asked himself as walked and stared at the ceiling.

He turned the corner and shoved the biscuit in his mouth with the etiquette of a dog, stopping when he saw his two favorite people. "'Morning," he said to them with a mouth full of biscuit. He grinned at them and gave them a slight wave as he continued on his way down the hall, mumbling to himself every few seconds. By the time he'd made it down the hall and finished his biscuit, he realized what he'd done and hurried back to the room with Vincent and his fiance. "Oh! What shall we do today?" He looked at Mizu as he stood at Vincent's side. "Don't look so droll, my dear. What would you like to bring that smile back to your lips?"

Marianne frowned at the princesses worries. "We will make it through don't worry. I bet you we can make good maps if the scouts couldn't make it." Marianne fiddled with her hair as she studied the items on the table. She was worried and angry about the war. She hated it. Why couldn't they just resolve it peacefully? Anne would never know. Then suddenly the twins came up.

"Good morning, ladies. You both look ravishing this morning." Anne blushed as she was complimented by the twins. "Good morning again boys. Thank you, but no need to flatter." Anne giggled a bit as her face had a streak of red.

Rafe smiled at Marianne's blush. Ralph and Rafe had no romantic interests since they were five. They just couldn't bring themselves to fall for anyone who couldn't even tell them apart. Suffice to say that Mad Hatter Jr. wasn't exactly in the running. There was always the problem that they both had the same tastes. Fighting over a girl wouldn't do for them. They knew how to charm girls, and they did constantly. Perhaps it was their mischevious attitudes but they tended to flirt a bit more than people who just wanted to be friends.

"Duchess, flattery is nothing more than fact that pleases people," he ran his eyes from her head to toe and back again before settling on her eyes. Rafe placed a hand under her chin and gentle forced her to lift her chin. "and you are quite beautiful. Don't you think so, brother?" Ralph had seen his brother's act many times and knew exactly how to act. "Certainly beautiful, but is the forbidden fruit of a princess more breathtaking, Rafe?" Ralph winked at Gracen before he and Rafe backed up and laced their arms around each other's shoulders to stare at the girls.

Marianne was startled. Her whole face turned red as the twins lifted her chins and complimented her. Marianne blinked hard and got dizzy as they let go. Marianne blushed as she got embarrassed. Then they complimented the princess too. She got jealous. She didn't know why. It was the princess. She was beautiful and enchanting. The duchess admitted it but she worried if both Rafe and Ralph liked the princess. The duchess felt really jealous. She then curtsied to the princess,"I will be going to my tent my princess. If you need me." Marianne ran off to her tent and closed the flaps to the tent. She sat on her bed and sighed as she felt heartbroken even though she had no evidence.

She knew the twins would never like her. She laid down on her back on the bed. She curled up and thought about things.
