Introduction
The only problem? So-called monster hunters are on the loose and trying to get inside. It's up to the citizens to keep the unwanted at bay, or else you -and everyone else kept safe within the city's walls- are no more than side shows in a circus or science's next new anomaly.

Depositing the box in his bedroom before locking all of the doors on the upper floor, Theo headed down the stairs, taking them two at a time. It had been a long day, he was ready to have a cup of tea and snuggle with his cat. He whistled three short notes, and soon enough he heard the pitter patter of tiny paws coming down the stairs behind him. Scooping up the animal barely larger than a newborn kitten, he sighed and tried to get his deceased family off of his tired mind.
"Oh Adam sorry." I mumbled, trying moving past him. All I needed now is a long, hot shower, let's just hope that Theo doesn't pay for his water in this city because by the end of the month you would've spent a million on water just because of my showering habits.
He carefully set the frame back on the nightstand and walked down to the kitchen, knowing that's where Theo always gravitated. Adam just didn't expect to find the necromancer asleep at the table, a leather-bound book as his pillow and his cat nestled snugly in his grasp.
It's almost as if I was in a fire. The hot water steamed the glass window and the mirrors, making it look like smoke. After standing there, in the shower for what seemed like hours, I got out and wrapped myself in a towel to dry off, before clothing myself. I wrapped the towel around my head in a "screw" and went downstairs, I was starving after today's "adventures". I saw Theo lying on the table, cat snuggled to him with some book by his side. Adam was at the fridge, his eyes roaming the chill box for food.
"Found anything?" I asked, sitting on the small kitchen counter.
Adam dropped the small cat into the pocket in his shirt with a sigh, the little creature poking his head out and looking around. "Is it just me, or does it feel like we got hit with a train after everything that's gone down today?" He shook his head and put a kettle of water on the stove for some tea.
"Feels more like an airplane ran over me." I mumbled and just watched him make tea, I knew snooping around would be a bad idea. When was it a good one?
"We'd find out sooner or later somehow." I tried making things less tense, but I'm not really sure it worked.
Adam shook his head and grabbed for some cups to put the tea in. "Don't think I'll be able to see him the same again, honestly. I'd hate to have that looming over my head like that, I don't think I could take it."
"But bringing it up will make him remember, let's just try not to think about it, or at least keep our thoughts to ourselves. It's hard to lose someone, and a reminder is only going to make it harder. I'm not trying to say we shouldn't think of it at all I mean how can anybody forget that? Let's just try to support him." I ranted on. Everything seemed fine but something was missing. Theo is sleeping, Adam drinking tea, I sit on the counter...
"Where's Dawn?" I remembered.
"Righto, Raccoon Boy," came a voice from the back corner. Dawn suddenly materialized where nothing had seemingly been before, pouting in an exaggerated manner. "Am I really getting that predictable, or do I just spend waaayy too much time around ya?" She nommed on the cookie in her hand, giving her friend big puppy eyes.
Adam shook his head and sipped his tea before pouring two more cups and dumping an obscene amount of sugar in each. "We've known each other since birth, whataya expect? Now hush, Theo's actually sleeping and it's kinda adorable." He handed a cup off to Dawn and set the other in front of Theo for when he woke up.
"I'm gonna go lay down. You guys have a good night." I said and hopped off the counter and grabbed the mug with tea, mumbling a "thanks" to Adam and walking to my room past Dawn. I closed the door and went over to the bed, sitting down. I took a sip from the mug and reached to get my phone, I haven't used it since Alfonso left me here. So it was charged. I unlocked it to call Alfonso, I miss him like crazy.
"Ciao! Angel how are you my tesoro?" I head the familiar voice of Alfonso speak, his Italian accent is thick.
"I miss you all, I just wanted to call really quickly to see how you were." I said, taking another sip.
"Oh we're good, we miss you too! Have you made any friends?" obvious question.
"Si, a few." honestly I felt so tired that even talking felt like running a marathon. "Look I'm sorry but I'm so tired so I'm going to sleep, tutto apposto?" I could feel him nod, even though I didn't see.
"Buona notte"
The sun had just finished setting, the sky still lightly stained with color as the stars began to appear. Theo smiled softly as he sat beneath the big old tree in the backyard, leaning up against the sturdy trunk as he took a sip of his cooling drink and dunked one of the cookies.
"Hey babe," he said softly as he looked up at the stars through the leaves. "Still missing you. Still wishing you were here with me. Still wondering what would've happened if I'd stayed."
Theo finished his tea and set the cup aside with a sigh. His eyes slipped shut and he let his hand rest on the ground. He could've sworn that something cold and strong slipped between his fingers and gave his hand a tight squeeze. The scents of cigarettes, hard booze, and old blood filled the air, and he felt himself smile.
He opened his eyes, but the ghost was gone.
I woke up with gasp, sitting up and not really remembering what had caused me to sweat and shake in fear. A nightmare? I used to get them a lot after my mum died. I put my head down on the pillow again, closing my eyes, trying to fall asleep, but failed miserably. I turned in different positions for what felt like hours, trying find a comfortable position for me to sleep in. After giving up, I stood up with a sigh, it was still in the middle of the night, or at least it was dark, and anything dark for me is night. I put on some ballerina shoes that I never remember using and a hoodie, walking down the stairs carefully, not wanting to wake anybody. I head something squeak behind me and I jumped in fear. I didn't see anything, but felt something smooth rub against my bare leg.
"What the hell!" I whisper-yelled only to remember Theo owned a cat. I sighed in relief again and exited the house. A walk at night is always nice, but I remember not to go near the Fey park or the woods ever again. The stars where shining bright, the wind was blowing softly, not enough to be cold, but not hot enough to be warm. I walked a steps and saw a dock with a small boat further down that I hadn't noticed. I decided to walk there. The moon was shining on the crystal water. It looked so welcoming. I lied down on the hard material, breathing the fresh and chilly air near the water. I relaxed and closed my eyes, listening to the wind, opening my eyes here and there to watch the sky. My peaceful moment was interrupted when I felt something grab my foot. I quickly pulled it in and looked around, there was a wet hand print on the shoe.
"Who's there?" I asked quietly. No answer came, but after only a few days on this town, knowing any sign of crazy supernatural creature and you better go the other way, which I did.
The man was more aquatic than human, with silver scales covering his entire body and shimmered ever so slightly in the moonlight. His arms were crossed over his chest, water dripping slowly off his limbs. Two thick canines protruded from his lower jaw, which would've looked menacing if Theo didn't know him so well. He was one of Theo's best, if not oldest, friends, and the owner of the town mortuary. His appearance could only mean one thing, but Theo was still too out of it for a sinking feeling to kick in.
"What is it, Atticus?" Theo grumbled as he pushed himself up to lean against the tree. "Can't a guy sleep around here for more than ten minutes anymore?"
Atticus shook his head, water droplets flying in every direction. "Apparently not. Xavior and I found something in our evening swim, figured you'd need to see it."
I walked away from the water, closer to Theo's house. There was this tall tree standing between the house and dock, a swing handing by two ropes was softly moving back and forth from the wind. I moved towards it and put my whole weight on it, relaxing as I felt the wind hit my face as I swinged. I usually hated to swing, it made me nauseous, but I'm actually enjoying it so I decided not to ruin it for me.
As I hummed on a melody I heard muffled voices talking, coming closer towards me. I look around but it was too dark to see. Maybe someone couldn't sleep too? I stood up from the swing and decided it would be enough for tonight and started heading back when I walked into something, making me fall on my butt. This has happened way to many times lately. Maybe I'm used that everyone on Alfonso's family is short.
"Theo?" I said, rubbing my eyes to see better.
"And while we're here, have you seen anything stranger than usual tonight? Not that you've seen all the crazy we have to offer yet, but still. I've been given word that there's an injured mermaid down by the docks, thanks to this ass." He gestured to Atticus, who just awkwardly waved. "Atticus, Angelina. Angelina, this is Atticus, my best fish friend who's gonna have to carry me soon because I'm still running on about an hour of sleep and I honestly have no idea how I'm still standing." Theo was swaying slightly as he spoke, eyes half closed and words beginning to slur together.
"Yeah haha I agree" I laughed nervously. If I was Theo, I would be mad at me, I'm literally the biggest pain in the arse. I looked over at the man beside Theo, Atticus.
"Well I did go down to that dock down there by the water and it felt as if someone grabbed me by my foot...?" I pointed to the dock. "Maybe I was just tired though." I explained. "Why?" I'm sure Adam would want to hear about this later.
He went to take a step, only to almost trip. Atticus just shook his head and scooped up the necromancer, who fell asleep not ten seconds later. "Want to join? Mermaid fishing can be...interesting, at the very least." Atticus asked her, adjusting his hold on Theo with a sigh.
I looked at Atticus with a friendly smile.
"Sure, it's not like I want to go back to sleep." I said trying to hide the excitement, I've never seen a real mermaid before, you could probably tell by now that I'm a night owl.
We headed towards the back of Theo's house, I believe there should be some...equipment for the um "mermaid fishing" and to put Theo in a real bed, the poor man is exhausted. And thinking about the "fishing" it sounds kinda rough, like do we use a hook? Or are we going to ask this mermaid "nicely" to come out of the water? I'm not really sure, but it will probably be interesting.
"So do you need any help?" I asked, looking at Atticus with wide eyes, it is night and I'm no cool werewolf to see in the dark.
"If you could help carry these, I would be grateful," he said, holding out a relatively large net out to her. He was a bit hard to understand, though his English was near perfect, a heavy accent masking half of his words.
He snatched up a large bucket and a waterproof flashlight before shutting the closet. "And now we go." He glanced back at Theo, feeling guilty for just leaving him there like that. Oh well, he'd had enough excitement for one day, might as well let him sleep.
I was confused but still took the net, leaving Theo on one of the hospital beds.
"So it's like we're really fishing?" I asked. What if we hurt the mermaid? What are we even catching it for? Is it a threat? Well it did grab me by my feet so that's kinda creepy, mermaids are what I call a "fox" foxes are snakes, they lie and put on an act, that's what out family always told me.
"Isn't that a little...rough for an alive "things"?" I asked, walking behind him with big steps.
"We're capturing her so she can be healed and so she can't harm anyone else in her school by accident. Besides, if there's something in there attacking the 'maids, it'll need to be found so we don't have to keep going out in the middle of the night to heal them." Atticus shrugged, swinging the bucket back and forth gently as he walked.
I nodded, walking behind Atticus, he looked to be more fond of these things. But don't mermaids need water to survive? Like they don't have legs and unless you illegally decided to shade your royal family and go sell your voice for a pair of hairy legs then I'd rather stay a mermaid, swimming with dolphins.
"So should I watch or.?" I asked confused as we stopped just in front of the dock. I stood there, land feeling safer then usual as Atticus prepared his net.
Atticus shook out his net and kicked off his shoes. "She can't have gone far, I'll be back in the shake of a lamb's tail. Zeus help me if I come up empty handed." He glanced over his shoulder at her with a grin. "I'd hate to see Theo's wrath if I come back without something, meaning I woke him up earlier for nothing." He glanced at the moon, back at the water, and jumped right in.
I nodded as Atticus jumped into what I imagine is very cold water. I looked around for any signs of movement in the water and sat down on my knees in front of the water, leaning down with the bucket to fill it with water, I was about to pull the bucket out when it became too have and well right down into the water, sinking.
"Shit!" I muttered under my breath and took of my sweater, putting my whole arm under water to search around for the bucket, how deep can it be? When I thought I felt something hard, I grabbed it and pulled it out only to scream loudly at the thing staring back at me. I had grabbed the mermaid by her tail, my hands slippery.
"EWW!" I yelled, wiping it off on my pants. I hadn't noticed the girl looking at me with an amused face.
"What?" I snapped rudely. She just kept staring at me with an amused face. She reached out to touch me legs, but I flinched away fast, making her furrow her brows. She opened her mouth and let out an unrecognisable word.
Atticus climbed out after a bit of vigorous splashing happened beneath the surface, the mermaid struggling slightly in his arms. An unsightly gash tore up her side from the bottom of her seashell bra to where her tail met torso. A few other cuts littered her arms and tail, but there didn't seem to be any blood. He frowned down at the fish girl for a moment, whispering something in her ear and causing her to fall asleep almost instantly.
"Much better," he said with a smirk, adjusting his grip and glancing towards Angelina. "Fun part's over, time to go wake up sleeping beauty so he can fix the Loch Ness Monster."
