"Here I stand with just my favorite baseball bat, gun lost with that damn baldieā¦just great" She muttered , and waited for his turnā¦while scouting nearby surroundings through window
Ayden peered over and sad Zara sitting near the windowsill, looking down at the darkened streets below. Her eyes seemed to be drooping a bit; it must be around time to switch watches.
āHey, Zara,ā Ayden said quietly. āIām up. Anything eventful happen?ā
"Not really, infected walking here and there, no gunshots or screaming to be heardā¦so silent it is that itās hard to not fall asleep while guardingā Zara spoke as quietly as she could, even if outside is seemingly safe thereās always possibility that someone unwanted is nearby. She slowly stretched for the fifth time now, thinking about something.
"Ayden, remind me if you would be so kindā¦what's the state of our food supplies? "
āA few water bottles, some granola bars, some pop tarts, about 8 can of various vegetables, a bag of jerky, and an apple.ā Ayden tosses the apple at her so she can catch it. āHere. It needs to be eaten before it goes bad. If youāre tired you can get some sleep now before itās dawn. When you wake up, weāll have to talk about a new plan of attack.ā
She chuckled, and wanted to laugh at Ayden's idea.
"Plan of attack? You've got to be kidding, unless you want to be infected..."
Looking at apple for short moment, Zara took bite out of it, slowly consuming as if trying to enjoy such small thing left in this world.
Once finished, she continued.
"I came here with 4 people, two died at start, one may be alive or not, while fourth, bald one died the moment he was bit..."
She paused for a moment, waiting for it to sink in.
"If my group was armed, and used to it...yet almost all of us died, what good will plan of attack do against hordes of infected?"
She sighted.
"Our plan should be focused on something else..."
Ayden walked over and peered our the window. He saw a few shuffling forms in the distance but nothing to get worried about.
āMaybe another one of the bridges, or the tunnel, or... God I donāt know. Theyāre probably filled with infected like the bridge we tried to cross.ā
Alyson started to stir on the bed on the far side of the room. Ayden walked over to pull the covers back onto her, but her eyes opened. āIs... is it time to wake up?ā She whispered. Ayden shook his head.
āNo, we still got a few more hours until we have to get up. Go back to sleep,ā he said softly. Alyson gave a sleepy nod, a shallow yawn, and laid her head back on the pillow. Before long she was back asleep.
Still there were too many questions and so few answers, for exampleā¦how high is chance for all three of them to get out of this city alive?
Guess it depends on how lucky we are, and how much time we put into making planā¦
Zara peered through window as well, thinking about possible solutions to their problem. Bridges, tunnelsā¦are surely swarmed. There may be some tunnels that have less infected inside them, butā¦there is something they missed. Zara chuckled, and smiled lightly.
"I think we missed something important, a way out to be preciseā¦"
Out from around the corner through the darkness, he saw three dark figures sprinting pretty fast.
Other survivors? What are they running from? He thought to himself.
His eyes grew wider when he realized they weren't normal; they were the infected! Three of them sprinting down the road and then off into the distance. Luckily, they did not stop to notice three people in the second floor of an apartment. After a full minute of silence after they had run off, Ayden spoke.
"What the hell was that? Those were infected, but they were running. I've never seen them run like that before..."
"Ah, hellā¦"
She hoped here it wouldnāt get worse, but it just did. Considering disease seems to adapt to hostsā¦they could really use him now. Hyperactive infectedā¦constantly on adrenaline is what he said, easy to tackle and hard to lose once they see you.
Should I tell Ayden? If I do he will start asking how I know thatā¦
Zara took a deep breath, and sighted. She has to tell him or he may die, and that won't be useful to anyone.
"Ayden, infected you saw are on constant adrenaline, my friend named them Hyperactive infected..."
She paused, waiting for his reaction.
The thought of a infected horde was mostly troubling due to their numbers, but they were manageable because they never could reach the speed above a slow jog. It was easy enough to out run them if you only found a couple. But these running ones filled with adrenaline? It had the potential to be very bad.
"Yes, good news are that they canāt climb, and you can recognize em by the twitchiness of theirs"
Not to mention them being small in numberā¦for now.
Zara wondered what would be next, what will disease come up with to catch all those who are not infected yet, Itās funny cause it feels like disease is thinking and adapting to what we doā¦is what he once said.
If he was somehow rightā¦
"Oh, almost forgot they still like to bite, part of how they rip you apartā¦with teeth and nails " She thought about what she saw once.
"You knowā¦you scream and cry for as long as you can, pain unbearable, torment unimaginableā¦then you die, as usual"
Her legs closer to the chest now and head in between, slight comfort created.
I feel...sick, curse it.
"Better keep it as secret from your sister for a while..." Zara muttered.
He glanced at his sleeping sister wondering how she could possibly be processing all this. To be so young, and to go through so much... it would only be worth it if they could make it out of this alive.
āYou tired? You can catch some sleep before itās time to move in the morning. Thereās a market around the corner that we should scavenge when day breaks.ā
If thereās anything left to get. he thought sullenly. Chances are, it was looted long ago.
āMaybe it would even be a good idea to check the other apartment rooms.ā
"Yes, we could use more suppliesā¦and maybe weāll find weapons"
She raised head for a moment, looked into Ayden eyes, her stare flat.
"About rest...Iāll rest here, too tired to move and think"
Head slowly went down, legs straight in a more comfortable place.
"Try not to wake something upā¦" She muttered, before falling asleep.
Secrets all aroundā¦
After about 15 minutes of standing there, and making sure Zara had fallen asleep, he walked over to the couch and took a seat. Everything was dangerously silent, with only the quiet noise of nocturnal insects chirping outside.
Another 20 minutes passed before he noticed a quiet whimpering noise. He approached his sister whose face was contorted in fright. She was having a nightmare. He gently rubbed her forehead and stroked her head until she stirred awake.
Her eyes were filled with tears as she looked around frantically.
āShh, it was only a nightmare. Youāre fine,ā Ayden comforted.
That seemed to calm her down, and she took a deep breath before reaching up for a hug. Ayden hugged Alyson gently. āDo you want to try and sleep some more?ā Ayden asked. Alyson shook her head no. āIām awake now,ā she said simply. āIām hungry though.ā
Ayden looked through his backpack and fetched her a granola bar. āItās not much, but it will have to do for now. Weāre going to search for more food and supplies when the sun comes up.ā
āThis will be fine...ā Adyson whispered. She ate the granola bar in silence. Then she joined her brother on the couch and waited for dawn to break.
*Time skip 2 hours, morning*
My head, wish I had better dream at least but noā¦
She slowly stood up, noticing Ayden missing from where he should be.
"Whereā¦" She muttered, as she slowly began to realize where he was. While she was near window, he was on the couch with his sister.
"You do realize...you couldāve killed us, right? "
Then she chuckled.
"At least me, considering Iām closest to the door and window now, I guess it makes sense why I had such a bad dreamā¦"
She looked around, searching for baseball bat, only to realize itās where she left it.
Zara slowly turned around, and peered through window, one hand reaching for bat.
"You knowā¦we should stay away from main street for now" Her grip became stronger as she holded bat.
"Uhh...on second thought all streets" Zara added stroking strands of hair.
OOC - How much can I assume when it comes to your characters? I'm asking cause I'm not sure what I may write about them (to some degree that is...for example I wanted to assume that Ayden would be hugged by younger sister searching for comfort, though I left it out cause of being not sure if it's that's fine with you).
IC - Ayden nodded. The main streets were too wide and not very much cover, except for the cars that were littered everywhere. Of course, many of them were useless as their gas was ciphoned long ago. Gas was pretty scarce nowadays. He brought out the city map out of his backpack and unfolded it on the table. On it were several red marking noting where they ran into trouble, and places to avoid. They wouldnāt need to go far to get to the market he wanted to check out today, but they should try to find a way through the alleyways and backroads.
āHere,ā he said, pointing down at the map. This series of alleyways is probably our best bet, as long as we stay quiet.ā
Alyson peered over down onto the map. āWill it be safe?ā She asked.
āWeāll be as safe as we can,ā Ayden assures her.
IC ā Zara had a bad feeling about this, and no matter how many precautions she came up with, it just wouldnāt go away. Surely she could agree that this choice is the safest, but if they know itā¦so could others, recently bitten ones included. Later she'll have chance and time to tell him about sewers, possible way out about which she almost forgot. She used Ayden's map to memorize some places worth going to if they end up splitting for whatever reason it may be, it's easier risking just one life.
Ayden, I wonder if he's...nevermind.
"Fine, though we need to remember about possible infected and uninfectedā¦" She thought of what else to say, what else to keep in mind.
"We should check other apartments as you said and put on some more clothes, I hope weāll find something we could use." With baseball bat in hand, she couldn't be more ready, though she still could use some sleep.
"Ayden?" Zara said, glancing shortly at Adyson.
As much as he may hate it, we will have to tell her eventually...
Ayden pulled something out of his backpack that was bulky and sat in his hand. It appeared to be one of those old alarm clocks with the bells that would ring loudly when the alarm sounded, and the whole thing was wrapped several layers in bubble wrap. Taped to the clock in the middle was a small baggie filled with a red liquid.
āThis is our distraction if things get scary. You wind the clock and pierce the red bag with something sharp. Itās pigs blood, and will cover the clock in blood. You throw it as far as you can and the alarm bells start ringing. Any infected in the area are drawn to its noise and the smell of blood. While they rush the clock, it gives us a chance to escape. Though it only works if you havenāt been spotted yet.ā
He put the contraption back in his pack and zipped it up. āWe shouldnāt need it. At least not until weāre out in the open streets.ā
"Actually I wanted to say something but that shut me up, stillā¦I have to ask what were you studying before all this? " Another question popped up in her head.
"Wait, you mean you tested it? " She asked, while thinking of possible cons to this device. One such negative effect could be catching attention of too many infected in the area.
If that happensā¦I guess itās a good thing weāre not against a hive mind thing or something inteligent.
Though there are other questions Zara will have to ask sooner or later, after all she knows so little about them, and they know little about her.
IC - "We had to use it once before, and it worked pretty well, and they're pretty easy to make. You can use anything that makes a loud noise," he said, while putting his pack over his back. "We should get searching. Do you think it's smarter to split up while we search the apartment?"
Adyson shuffled uncomfortably; the thought of going back out there were they could get killed was frightening to her.
IC ā Zara carefully listened, knowing it was actually used calmed her slightly. Apartments could save them with supplies or doom them with hidden infected, question was different though, Zara wondered whether splitting will be profitable or troublesome.
" I see, about apartmentsā¦we will search them faster if we split, but it may be more dangerous, so itās a matter of how sure you are of being able to keep her safe" Glances at Adyson.
Ayden glanced down to Adyson, and then back up to Zara. "You let me worry about her. I've kept her safe so far, and I won't let her get hurt now."
"I'll be ok. I will be very quiet," Adyson added.
"Alright then, let's get to it," Ayden nodded to Zara. "We'll take the the rooms on the first floor, you check out the second. If anything happens, this room is the fall back place. If that's not an option, the next meeting point is the market a few blocks over."
Zara moved to door, first checking through eyelet, then slowly opening door. Corners seemed clear to her.
I wish there was more light hereā¦
She stepped outside, stairs up and down. Naturally she moved up, wondering whether will it be infected or nothing upstairs.
OOC -Np, after all you mentioned moving to new house earlier.
Oh, and Merry christmas/ Happy holidays :)

Malcom Torrance sat on a bed, scribbling about his latest experiences with the Infected. Heād just narrowly escaped a cluster of Infected that had mutated, and could sprint without tiring. Heād taken refuge in an apartment and was in a room with a chair jammed against the door. Suddenly he heard footsteps on the stairs. His heart began to pound. He ran over to the window, thinking he could make a mistake, but it was rusted with a thick layer of orange. The footsteps were getting closer, and now he could hear... voices? He didnāt know what to do. If it was survivors, heād been saved. If it were Infected.... Well... He returned to the bed and sat down. He was ready for either.
