He still couldn't believe that she was gone. Every time that he awoke, he hoped that it had been merely a bad dream. Ryley was well aware that his family was worried sick about him. He'd dated Christi for nearly four years. He'd thought her to be 'the one'. They'd talked about getting married and having a family together. Thinking on it now only caused him a great sadness. He'd refused to speak with anyone since Christi's death, even Hanna. He just couldn't bring himself to.

He'd changed his appearance completely after the funeral. He'd dyed his hair black and had started wearing darker clothing. He'd even started painting his nails a dark color as well as wearing eyeliner quite often. His parents didn't know what to think about his sudden change and Ryley had refused to speak on it. Currently, Ryley was in his mother's car. She'd insisted upon driving him to the college. He suspected that she simply didn't trust him to drive himself and honestly he couldn't blame her. He'd not been acting like himself for the past month.

They rode in relative silence until they were perhaps ten minutes from campus. "Ryley, I know that you said that you were fine coming back to school but no one would think badly of you if you took the semester off." The woman said, her eyes on the road. Ryley glanced to his mother though said nothing. It wasn't worth the argument. As far as he was concerned, getting back to school would be good for him. He still needed to choose his major and once he did he planned on staying busy.

His mother sighed at his silence though he didn't care. His was still feeling Christi's death. In no time at all, they arrived at the campus. His father had already brought his things so the only thing that Ryley had with him was his phone and bag. His mother hugged him and told him to call her when he was able. Only after they'd pulled apart did he get out of the car.

He waved his mother goodbye as she pulled away. He then turned and began walking in the direction of the dorms. Normally, Ryley would have arrived much earlier so as to find Hanna and Christi. Now, though, he was simply doing good being there. Everyone around him seemed in high spirits, being reunited with their friends. He did notice a few odd looks that he was receiving but he paid them no mind. He'd known that his new appearance would come as a surprise to any that knew him.

Just as he was crossing the yard near the dorms, a voice brought him to a stop. "Hey!" Ryley turned towards the voice..the voice of Hanna he'd suddenly realized. He'd wanted to put off seeing her for as long as possible. However, it seemed that wasn't going to happen. He allowed his gaze to rest upon her, simply waiting for her to join him. As she did, she reached up, taking hold of his face in her hands. He very nearly pulled away from her though forced himself to remain standing still as they regarded each other.

"Ryley? Is that you? Are you okay?" Hanna asked. Ryley was silent for a moment, simply watching her. He had no idea how to reply to her questions. He'd been working so hard on keeping everyone out and here was the one person who would be able to see through his lies. How have you been? If you don't want to talk, I'll understand." Of course she was being nice to him. However, he was unsure of how he felt about it. She was a reminder of Christi and honestly he didn't want anything to do with her. "I've been okay. How about you?" He said, pausing for a short moment. He held her gaze and he was nearly certain that Hanna knew that he'd not been okay as he'd said. "Look, it's not that I don't want to talk to you..it's just better if I don't. Besides, I'm a bit behind. I've got to get unpacking. But, maybe I'll catch you around sometime."

It was his way of telling her that he was not planing on spending time with her any time soon. He just didn't think that he could handle being near her. He broke her gaze, feeling a bit bad. She'd lost Christi too and here he was tearing her other friend from her as well. He was unsure of how she was going to react though he he did not think that would change his mind.

Ryley left her then and headed off towards his dorm. He didn't even look back at Hanna. He couldn't. He was walking through the long hall slowly. He noted that there were not many people left wandering about. No doubt they'd already gotten to their dorms and were unpacking or spending time with their friends. Ryley was quickly brought out of thought as a hand closed about his wrist. He stopped moving and turned to see who had stopped him. Hanna If course it was Hanna. He could easily see that she was not happy with him. "Look here, Ryley, I understand that you are upset or whatever but I lost someone to. A friend, a dear friend, okay? So no need for that little attitude of yours."

She gave him no time to reply, turning and flipping her hair against him. He did not go after her, simply watching as she left him. He was glad that he was alone. Her words bothered him though he was quick to push them out of his mind. He turned and then continued down the hallway. He was glad that his assigned room was fairly close to the front of the building. He opened the door and then entered, finding his roommate. It was the same man he'd roomed with the year before and the two were fairly close.

Ryley greeted the man and it was easy to see that he was surprised at Ryley's new appearance. He made his way over to his bed and then began unpacking. Taylor was trying to ask him how he was doing but Ryley was quick to make sure that his friend knew that he didn't want to talk about it. The other man left, then, leaving Ryley alone. He was already beginning to regret returning to school.

Now that he was alone, Ryley allowed himself to fully feel the pain and sadness he'd been trying to keep buried. He gently sat down on the bed, placing his face in his hands. He remained that way even as his phone went off, signaling a message. Slowly, he lifted his head and then pulled his phone out of his pocket. He quickly opened the message and then sighed at seeing it was from Hanna. He hesitated, trying to decide if he should even bother in writing her back.

After a few moments, he broke down. He couldn't ignore her completely. He typed up a reply, telling her that it was okay..he understood her reaction. And that he was sorry. He didn't think that she would understand but he wanted her too so badly. He was quick to add that if she needed him(for anything), all she needed to do was let him know. Of course, he was still planning on staying away from her unless he had to be near her.

Ryley rose from the bed and then continued to unpack. He took his time, putting his things where he wanted them. If he wasn't going to be spending time with Hanna, he would need to find someone else to be around. Which was easier said than done. When he was finished, he ran a hand through his dark hair. His phone sounded suddenly and he quickly picked it up. He looked at the message, seeing it was from Hanna. He quickly replied to her, telling her that he was going and that he would possibly see her there.

He placed his phone in his pocket and then headed out of his room. He made his way towards the pep rally. He was greeted by a few more people and so Ryley was forced to act as if everything was okay. He entered the building and it was easy to see that most were already there. He had no idea where he should stand or sit. He easily spotted Hanna and debated about sitting with her. However, he was quick to shoot that down. Taylor suddenly appeared next to him.

"Hey man! Come on. You're sitting with us." the taller man said. He quickly began pulling Ryley to the other side of the building. They took a seat together and Ryley found himself surrounded by a few people that he'd only ever spoken to in passing. They seemed glad for him to be with them and he was glad that everything seemed to be okay for now.

His gaze fell to Hanna, watching her steadily for a few moments before the pep rally began. Everyone around him was quick to get into a good mood and was happy to be there. Ryley was trying so hard to act as if everything was okay with him. He was trying to ignore Hanna. He was certain seeing her and spending time with her would only cause him more pain in the end. Something that he didn't need right then.

At one point, he even had a smile on his face. Something that he'd not allowed to happen in some time. However, it didn't quite reach his eyes. A sign that it wasn't a real smile. He was certain that most would not notice. He feared, though, that Hanna would and try to speak to him of it. Taylor was trying to get him talking and Ryley allowed him to succeed. He began speaking with those that he was with, happy for the distraction.
