A restless Northman
Vere has a personality that is pretty much the trademark of a man who has spent most of his life sailing with a crew of men. He is lewd, loud, and always eager to assert his dominance. He is a natural leader and very authoritative, which usually earned him a place of at least limited power on whatever voyages of which he was a part. Vere is not used to people not listening to him, and when they don't, he often becomes angry. His temper has gotten him in trouble once or twice, but it mostly convinces people that he is not to be trifled with. His bark is worse than his bite, however, and he very rarely enters into physical confrontations, and he NEVER starts them. Incredibly observant, Vere misses very little when it comes to his surroundings, which is a product of his many years of having to successfully navigate ships. The reason why he has done so well as a sailor is he becomes easily bored, and he craves the adventure that his profession brings.
Not one for weapons, Vere usually carries a small knife tucked into his boots, commonly used for cutting objects more than people. When he was a raider, he was accustomed to using a large, double-edged sword, which he still carries with him.
The son of a sailor, Vere was very eager to follow in his father's footsteps as a child. When he was ten, he joined his first crew as a deckhand, and from then he spent very little time on land. He is not estranged from his family, but he rarely sees them because of the traveling that he does. During the time he has spent as a sailor, he has participated in many different kinds of voyages, from friendly explorations to violent raids. Both suit him just fine, and he has amassed quite a bit of wealth. However, he does not hold onto it and prefers to spend his money on drink and women.
At age twenty-three, after thirteen years of sailing, Vere went on his last voyage. It was an extremely devastating raid on a small coastal city. Everything was going according to plan until, taken by surprise, Vere instinctually killed one of his attackers. When he looked upon his assailant, he realized that it was a young boy and was immediately overcome with guilt. He had never killed a child before. For that reason, Vere decided that had been doing this for long enough and it was time to try something else. His journeys have brought him all over, and he is eager to continue them and have new experiences.
