Setting
There are stairs at the end of the corridor. Down those stairs are 6 doors either side. Left: living room, library, diner. Right: office full of papers, empty room, kitchen.
The living room has red sofas and a huge TV that has been smashed.
The library has a lot of books about the development of weapons.
The diner has a long table, and all the chairs have chains that wrap around the ankles and wrists.
The office has a lot of papers. Bank papers, mostly.
The empty room. It's empty.
The kitchen is the clean part of the house. It has food, too. Eggs. Like, a million eggs. Hope you like eggs.
"Is this because I'm a girl?" Lexi asked then. "Because I wasn't in the stupid room because I'm a girl. And you are all male," she shivered. She didn't want to keep the secret she was keeping much longer. "Um...you have to work the riddles out first!" she blurted out. Ainsley couldn't find anything, apart from blood, on the knife, and handed it silently back to Lexi. After all, it could be someone else's. Lexi might not have done it.
He didn't have much more to say, just began shrinking back more and more, visibly terrified of Lexi. He'd never encountered any girl like her before, with such a remarkably threatening spirit. He found it harder to steady his voice.
"Hey, John, take a breath. You're brave, sticking up like that," Ainsley whispered, squeezing his hand. The poor guy looked like he needed a hand.
"Right, okay, looks like you guys need some help. 'Join The Society'. That's right. But you'll need some help. What do I get in return?" Lexi smiled. She loved sly deals. They always ended up with Lexi getting the better deal.
"This society," Lexi replied calmly, "is something that nobody chooses to enter. I don't work for anyone but myself." That was rephrased wrong...it made her sound very selfish. "I have the keys because I was given them."
"Then how c-can we join! You don't -- you don't make sense! W-W-Why would you be given the k-keys!" He sounded out of breath and angry, very very rare. He would have scared himself. "I... I want... I just want to go home... Let us go..." The anger subsided quickly.
Still holding the little knife, Lexi goes crashing onto the floor, stabbing herself in the neck, crimson blood trickling down her front now. She's lucky she can speak. "You idiot you could have killed me and for that, I'm not helping!" she goes outside, with the keys, sulking in the hall.
"Great, just great, let's go downstairs," Ainsley sighed. "There must be like a book or something on this society."
CJ and John would hear crying and talking.
Ainsley stood up and Lexi started crying and mumbling about the society into his shoulder. He looked uncomfortable but wasn't going to move her any time soon. Right now Lexi was probably as scared as they were. And they were pretty scared.
"I'm going to see if Lexi and Ainsley ar-are okay." He got to his feet, all wobbly and off balance. Gradually he made his way out, holding onto the door frame for support.
Ainsley grinned, "She's not half tough, especially for a girl. I'd be crying still. She told me about this society. You can join by swearing an oath on your life that you'll do anything they say. That's why we are here. Like a test, you know?" CJ had come out, "We won't pass. I'm not swearing on nothing. What's in it for you?"
"Don't know, she didn't say."
"I don't think we-we can trust her..." John frowned.
CJ glared at Lexi, something about her just triggered angry mode. Like, he wanted Ainsley dead, but he'd never hurt him physically. And John was an annoying nerd to CJ, but the guy was alright. Lexi...just. No. CJ automatically hated her. Maybe it was the way she spoke jibberish.
What confused CJ was, why did she join this society? Like, a lot of things can be offered to someone: fame, fortune, beauty...but Lexi had them all the day she was born. Maybe it wasn't offered? Maybe it was taken and she could have it back if she joined?
What if it was her life?
"What did you get from this society, Lexi?" Ainsley stole the words from CJ's mouth.
"What did you get from this society, Lexi?"
John just watched her, judging her movement.
"Spit it out," CJ muttered darkly.
"I didn't get anything," she lied, using her acting skills to pretend like she'd just realised.
