ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

Number of different types of insects:

Image

The number of extant species is estimated at between six and ten million, and potentially represent over 90% of the differing metazoan life forms on Earth. Insects may be found in nearly all environments.

Life cycle:

Image

The majority of insects hatch from eggs. Some species of insects, like cockroaches gestate inside the mother and are born alive. Some insects, like parasitic wasps, have a single fertilized egg which divides into thousands of separate embryos.

Habitat:

Insects are mostly solitary, but some insects, such as bees, ants, and termites are social and live in large, well-organized colonies.
Some insects, like earwigs, show maternal care, guarding their eggs and young.

Exoskeleton:

Insects have segmented bodies supported by an exoskeleton, a hard outer covering made mostly of chitin, these layers of fibrous chitin and proteins, criss-cross each other in a sandwich pattern, the chitin-polymer matrix has increased strength.

Biology:

Image

Many insects possess very sensitive organs of perception. Most insects are able to perceive light and dark. Many species have acute vision capable of detecting minute movements. Insects can generally hear sound if they can produce it.

An insect uses its digestive system to extract nutrients and other substances from the food it consumes. Some insects, like flies Some insects expel digestive enzymes onto their food to break it down. This strategy allows insects to extract a significant proportion of the available nutrients from the food source.

Some insects display a sense of numbers, mother wasps lay eggs in individual cells and provides each egg with a number of live caterpillars on which the young feed when hatched. Some species bring as many as twenty-four caterpillars per cell.

Some insects such as cockroaches move so quickly, they need to be video recorded at several hundred frames per second to reveal their gait.

At least a few insects have cells that detect and transmit sensations of pain. Although there is not a consensus that insects feel pain consciously.

During the Carboniferous and Permian eras, some giant dragonfly-like forms reached wingspans of 22 to 28 inches, making them far larger than any living insect. This gigantism may have been due to higher atmospheric oxygen levels that allowed increased respiratory efficiency.

Humans generally regard insects as pests. Some insects damage crops by feeding on sap, leaves or fruits, others bite humans and livestock, alive and dead, to feed on blood and some are capable of transmitting diseases to humans.

Grenfell Nebraska was your average little town, its population was barely over 1000 residents total, it was a quiet austere middle America town. The land around Grenfell was pure and clean, with beautiful rolling hills, farms of varying sizes, wide open spaces, and houses lined up and down its well-kept streets. Summers were cool and winters were harsh, in terms of property Grenfell consisted of middle to upper class dwellings, and even though it was considered a small town by most standards, the residence of Grenfell thought it to be a bustling, vibrant community.

Jack and Marge Johnson owned one of the biggest farms in Grenfell, they were an elderly couple whose ancestors were some of the first settlers in this part of the United States, they had family which stretched all the way back to the Mayflower. Most of their time was spent sitting on their front porch in their rocking chairs gazing out over their crops of prize-winning corn. By this time in the season the stalks of corn were as high as a man standing on his tippy toes, and even several inches above that. Jack and Marge knew that it would soon be time to cut down their crops, take them to the market, and sell them for the best price that they could possibly get. They of course no longer did any of the hard work around the farm, leaving that instead to helpers that they would have hired each season. Over the years they have had dozens of people working for them, both longtime residents, passersby, and even the occasional wino in desperate need of money to buy himself some booze.

During the daytime the town hall was normally vacant, and not even the mayor, who had his office at the back of the building, would be seen at the town hall when there wasn't anything to officiate. The mayor however could be found sitting on the porch of his house which stood directly behind the town hall. The Hall would also be used for meetings of the ladies auxiliary, the benevolent order of Moose, the biweekly Bingo extravaganza, occasional chaperoned dance, and even at times, a place for the mayor to actually do some work.
