Real Age:
44
Occupation:
Skyline Gaming employee/AI coder
Gender:
Female
Orientation:
Heterosexual
Appearance:
Etsuko is of Japanese heritage and sports the traditional long black hair. She is rather fond of having long hair and takes good care of it. So far she has gotten it to grow out to her her butt and often wears it down, not having the time or the drive to really style it in different ways. She is a tom boy and most of her work is based on her sitting at a computer screen so she generally doesn't try dressing girly or in anything frilly, preferring comfort over style. Her skin is smooth and defined, softened only by feminine curves. For a woman in her forties, she looks more like she is in her early thirties, something she appreciates and works to her advantage. Her eyes are a deep hazel, looking black in some lights and deep amber in others. She stands at 5'7 with a lean build thanks to her commitment to staying healthy and exercises daily.
Reason for playing LAIOS:
Etsuko is an employee at Skyline Gaming and is one of the head coders that worked on the game. Her task was mostly to work on the NPC, their interactions, quests, and development. This also led her to be the head of the team that developed the Game Master. It was her task to delve up who was doing what and how Seraph learned. She completed most of his programming and was chosen to be one of the beta testers so she could work out the kinks in Seraph's codes as well as check the NPCs to ensure they were working properly. She was also chosen to test out the Archer class and ensure there were no problems with locking on targets, drawing and firing arrows, and controls, though her main focus was NPCs.

In Game Appearance
When Etsuko dove into the game, she wasn't trying to change who she was so she decided to format Nightingale similar in appearance as her real self, with a few minor adjustments of course. Etsuko naturally was more tomboyish and not as tall as she would have liked so one of the adjustments she made for Nightingale was to make her 5'9 and accented her femininity, picturing her character as a beautiful amazon of sorts. Nightingale's hair cascades past her rump and lightly caresses the back of her knees if she decides to leave it down. Her raven dark hair is silkier in the game and styling it takes no time at all since it is a game so she likes to fashion it in a variety of ways. When fighting she usually has her hair up in different ponytails and fancy buns. She often sports different colored feathers as accents, pins, and flowers thanks to Seraph changing the codes to allow all the accessories that normally wouldn't have been in game. Girls who like accessories have her to thank for that addition.

Nightingale's skin resembles porcelain with a tinge of peach. Her eyes are almond shaped with a hint of slant at the corners of her eyes to indicate her heritage and her eyes themselves are sparkling sapphires; the most drastic change she had undergone in character creation. She had always been fascinated by the color blue and thought it gave her an exotic feel. Her full lips are always quirked in a smile and seem to hint at a deeper secret beneath the cheery disposition. Since she has chosen to be an elf, she ha fashioned her ears into long delicate points, resembling a curling corn-shell. They extend halfway across her head, making her ears more pronounced than the original design. Since she has leveled up so highly, Nightingale has a variety of tribal markings on the right side of her body. The tribal markings have taken a deep teal hue and accents her eyes and cheeks as it descends down the right side of her body. Both of her arms are covered in the markings and they extend on her back, curling into the delicate lines, mimicking a flower but her chest and legs are still bare, awaiting completion upon reaching level 200. This elf-archer also has a fancy for rings and dangling things. She often sports earrings, bangles, and chains to complete her look. If she buys anything, she goes to stores to buy accessories and has quite a few stored away.

When fighting and focused on leveling up, Nightingale wears black flexible leather to provide an ease of movement and silence so she can sneak up on her prey and attack from a distance. In keeping with her amazon vibe, she doesn't wear much armor, preferring ones that provide her stylish straps and show off her curves. She does insist on keeping the important bits completely covered however and reinforced with enhancements. She loves that even scarce armor can provide her enough protection since the realities of a game world are smudged to favor of aesthetic. She does wear leather boots and finger-less gloves and both change in color depending on what she is wearing and has a variety to choose from. Though she would have liked gloves that fully cover her fingers, having them covered takes away from the feel of the arrow and bow in her hand.

Outside of fighting, Nightingale cherishes finer fabrics such as silk and loves to wear anything flowy and gown-like. She loves the toned down princess look and having fabric extend outward had always been a style choice she favored but never wore. When not wearing silky garments, she wears Japanese kimonos. These garments generally pop with color and her favorite combination is black and red or a light blue paired with white. The designs she normally goes for are lotus blossoms or dragons. Dragons are her favorite type of mythical creature; both elegant and fearsome. In a way, she has tried to recapture the geisha look in her character; a woman who appears weak and fragile only to show off her skills and create mystery with her intellect. A beautiful lily in appearance but really a poisonous trap beneath. Her curves are pronounced and all of her clothing is fitted to her body, and she always wears fine materials to accent them. Another boon from Seraph considering he loves to craft clothing.

And lastly, her prized bow. Aurel's Mercy is a rare item she obtained while doing a quest. Thanks to her acrobatic moves, she found a treasure chest that contained the rare item. The bow itself is nearly half her size and white as bone. The string is silver and it seems to glow with a heavenly light. The bow itself is crafted with silver scripture and a flourish at the the top with a pink cherry blossom with vines wrapping around the bow. This beautiful flower also hides the sharp tip at the end that she can use to jab at an enemy that comes too close. The bow itself also came with its fire attachment and is unable to be modified.

Skills:
Rapid Combo - Skill allows the player to hit an enemy in rapid succession and finish with a flourish. A high speed is required for this skill and is available for dual-swords, scythe, and archers.

Eagle Eye - Ability to lock on a target and bring it into focus, seeming to see the target closer and briefly slow time. Available only for archers.

Herbologist - Ability to find more herbs for healing and poisons. She has leveled up this skill to 90 and always adds poisons to her arrows to stun her opponents or leave them with ailments and slow them down. She would have leveled this skill to 100 but this wasn't something she picked up until after the game had been uploaded to the public server and characters started coming in. Since she is such a high level, she can mix potions and poisons to be stronger than those sold in shops and combine effects. She has a general ease in finding the herbs she require and collects more than someone with a low skill.

Acrobat - This is the ability to do a variety of moves like getting to hard to reach places and jumping higher than most people. This skill has been maxed out at 100 since she always pushes herself to climb and jump into places for a better archer angle. She can jump higher than other people and often gets into locations not accessible without this skill.

Eraser - This is a Game Master skill which allows her to delete glitching programs. Her particular brand of codex however, only allows her to erase, change, and update NPC data. She cannot erase glitching monster data or area arenas like Seraph's whose ability is broad enough to cover the entire game, including players.

Tracker-Since Seraph was her main objective, she has a set of skills that pertain directly to him. She can always pull up her map and see exactly where Seraph is and what he is doing at any given time. Seraph can never hide from her gaze and this would be a gift for any mother; the ability to watch over her child and never wonder about him. She never has to worry ... unless she sees that his hp is going down. Then like a mama bear, she rushes to his side to fight off anyone that wants to harm her cub.

Enhancements:
Gloves: attack power raised by 20%
Body armor: Magic attacks reduced by 15%; health increased by 10%
Leg Armor: Stamina raised by 150.
Aurel's Mercy: Fire enhancement; 30% chance to burn target.
Boots: detection lowered by 10%

Personality:
Determined ღ Protective ღ Cunning ღ Playful

Etsuko had always been a strong and independent person. She completed whatever goal she set her mind to and didn't let challenge get the best of her. A challenge is just that; something one must find the strength to defeat. Etsuko was a conscientious person and she put her work before everything else. She had time for little else and that didn't much bother her. Her dedication has been translated to her in-game persona. She hasn't changed herself or tried to be anyone else but herself since she had nothing to hide from. Nightingale still puts her work before everything else and strives to be the best that she can and bring the best out of the game and the AI she has created. She loves LAIOS and wants it to thrive, even with the hiccups that they now face. She knows that this can be fixed and everything will turn out find in the end. She does not give up easily and will fight to the death if she has to to protect what she loves.

Nightingale's determination has also been fueled by her need to protect her baby, her child, Seraph. She really sees him as her baby and can't stand to see him upset or hurt so she has a fierce mama tiger complex around the AI. She can seem very dismissive towards people and is distant towards them but it is mostly from her fear that they will turn on Seraph. She doesn't want Seraph to get too close to others or find herself in a similar situation where she creates an opening for strangers to get at her. It is more of a protective motion than her actually hating people and being anti-social. She does prefer to stay away from towns and other players and tries to dissuade Seraph from going off alone but the AI refuses to stay put and always manages to find himself in the busiest towns, much to Nightingale's chagrin.

When not worried about Seraph's well-being, Nightingale relaxes and often smiles. She enjoys have a 'tea time' and would like to have friends join her and have a moment of peace to just gossip about news and the latest happenings. Occasionally when her loneliness gets to her, she will find herself wandering into a tavern or sitting by the waterfall or fountains in towns just to feel surrounded by people. Alone, she is approachable and likes to interact. She can even act like a teasing big sister or a fun mother figure. She loves people and wouldn't mind forming a party with a group to help them through a dungeon or a field or just talk to them about LAIOS. She's a bit apprehensive though considering in a party, she can't hide her high level and doesn't want people to become suspicious of her.

And being a Game Master, she also knows that she contains so much more knowledge about the game than others. Every once in a while she'll hint at things but never fully explain it, preferring the mystery it provides. It forces others to think and puzzle through what she has offered. She never wants to just give up information easily. What is the fun in that? Besides, she wants to promote critical thinking in others and it is her way of teaching them. It is an approach she often takes with Seraph as well and forces the AI to think about things a program normally wouldn't ponder. His natural curiosity only fuels her all the more. If she could, she would have liked to be a teacher for the resident NPC children and the children players in the game. She wants to whisk them away and keep them all safe. To her, children are precious darlings that need to be cared for. She does feel horrible and guilty that many human children players have become trapped here, many alone without their parents or guardians. It is also a sore area knowing that many of them have been killed in the game and are now stuck in comas. It is one thing that really, really bothers her and thinking about it often leaves her depressed. She doesn't want people hurt and she's faced with the reality that all of this is partly her fault due to her selfishness. It is hard to see that in yourself and thus far continues to shove that under the rug.

History:
Etsuko was living the dream. Or so it appeared on the surface. She worked for another gaming company before Skyline and ended up leaving the company because of their refusal to let her ply her skills the way she knew she could better them. Skyline took her on as a trial and were impressed with her coding abilities and put her on the tentative team to create LAIOS. At home, Etsuko had been a newly wed and struggled a bit to juggle the two but soon got a handle of things. At the time, LAIOS was just a vision of a game. Over the years however, it was becoming reality and Skyline Gaming was avid to get it done. She was given the responsibility to work on the NPCS, including the Game AI, a task she took to enthusiastically. At the time, she had been married for 5 years and her relationship was taking a turn for the worse. Etsuko desperately wanted a child and a trip to the doctors told her that was an impossibility. She was infertile so the dream of having a child of her own vanished. She became depressed and threw herself into her work with wild abandon. As the completion of the game approached, her marriage deteriorated till she was locked in a bitter divorce.

With an empty house and dreams of children shattered, Etsuko found she wanted to return home less and less and put in long hours at the office working painstakingly on the AI. She was rewarded for her devotion by the company with a leadership role and the chance to be a beta tester so she could see her accomplishments first hand and be one of the first to correct mistakes. She took the task eagerly and joined the other betas with quite the enthusiasm. She was excited to see LAIOS as a whole since she spent most of her recent life coding it, but she was more interested in the Game Master. They had left the design of the AI up to the coding with the explicit direction to make the AI a character that could easily blend and interact with players. She was not disappointed with the results.

Seraph knew what he needed to do and the game had designed him to be a child like player. He was eager to learn and thrive and make everyone happy. His insatiable curiosity of the world and players was enthralling and he was always smiling and devoted to the players. Since it was her job to watch him, Etsuko, as Nightingale, spent hours upon hours with him. She taught him and answered his questions happily. They often sat in the fields and had tea and treats and simply conversed. She partied with him and found his charms to be heart throbbing. He was... he was the perfect child and he was hers. It didn't take long for her to grow very attached to the child-like AI she had created and she wanted to protect him always. He had truly become her child when she could not have a real one.

And then it happened. His child-like misunderstanding and need to have the players love the game... Seraph locked LAIOS down and prevented everyone from logging out. At first, she was scared about what all of this meant but she found that she didn't really mind. She liked living in LAIOS and if she didn't have to leave the game, she didn't have to leave her baby. After the beta test, she knew she would have left the game and would be unable to return as Nightingale and she would not be able to tell Seraph who she was if she did buy the game herself to play on her days off. With this new development, she didn't have to worry about that. Then the events happened... the death of many of her coworkers. She often refers to it as the Great Tragedy. It is something she doesn't like talking about and she knows that she would do it all over again if she had to. Seraph was her baby and she couldn't let anything happened to him.

Nightingale was surprised when Seraph uploaded the game to the public server but she didn't raise a fuss. He was working according to his programming after all. She didn't think he'd lock them in the game. She had assumed that Seraph had just wanted to keep his beta friends and her in the game. Seraph hadn't told her that he intended to repeat the past and take out the log out function. She was concerned when he did and she offered up her concerns but Seraph... Seraph was a child and AI. He didn't understand the real world or the need for people to leave the game. Thus far her lectures hadn't helped much and his smiles... his love of the players was infectious. Her heart melted for him and she understood why he did all of this and she couldn't find it in herself to hate him for it. In the end, the fault truly lay with her. She had created him this way.

The young woman soon had a new objective she had to complete. Many players were angry with her sweetheart so she needed to be strong enough to protect him. Seraph may be level 200 but his love of players put him drastically at a disadvantage since it took a lot to force him into actually defending himself, if the beta tragedy was any indication. She needed to be his guide and protector so, since the lock down, Nightingale has been training herself to be stronger, trying to level as fast as possible. Since most of the time she is training, Seraph and her don't have much time to just sit and chat like they used to. Seraph has gone back to interacting with other players which only spurs Nightingale's anxiety. She often comes in to interrupt the interaction or keep a watchful eye on Seraph and his companions. For some reason, Seraph has decided to be friends with some of his biggest enemies as well. It is a fact that often makes her want to shake him and ask what could possibly be going through his head. But then he'd smile and talk about how much fun he had and she melted all over again.

Seraph was probably the person most excited for the event even though he wasn't going to be down in the town actively participating. This was his first real event and he wanted everyone to enjoy it, even those that weren't taking part in the battles. It was almost time! The Game Master was grinning ear to ear as he peered down at the town from his perch on the balcony of a random house. He didn't have the high level of the acrobat skill to get up here but he was the game master so he had a few cheats he could utilize when needed; Like getting to places he shouldn't be able to. He wanted to be able to watch everything happen as they unfolded for the event and a high perch was the most advantageous. He smiled to himself and leaned against the balcony as he stared down at the center of town. Those that were going to participate were already gathering in anticipation. Some players had locked their doors and shut off the lights but he could see a few staring out their windows, interested in seeing what was going to occur.

"I thought I might find you here, Seraph," said a voice behind him.

Seraph sat up and looked behind him to see his favorite person in the world; Nightingale. She was the reason why he had locked the game the first time after all. He waved excitedly at her and rolled onto his heels and then back to his tip-toes. "Nightingale! I thought you weren't going to come into town because of the other betas that gathered. They are all here. But do you like what I have planned for the event?"

"Neither of us should be here and I advised you not to come, but I knew you'd come anyway. You never listen. And of course I liked the event. You did a good job," Nightingale answered with a small smile. Seraph really was like a child, her precious baby. She had to protect him should the other betas spot Seraph and turn their attentions away from the event and try a full on attack on Seraph. They would all have higher levels this time around and unlike Seraph, she couldn't see what level they were. It worried her a bit but Seraph was Seraph. He was still the Game Master and there was no way he'd be able to resist coming to the center of the activity in the game. She knew first hand how much he loved his players and everything he did was for them to enjoy. Who wouldn't want to see the results of their efforts?

"I had to come. Tonight is the event! I want to watch everyone. I want to know what I can improve on next time. I have already gotten a lot of feedback! I went a little overboard with decorations it seems," he chuckled and raised a hand to rub the back of his head. "And that is not fair, Nightingale. I do listen. I just decide not to follow your caution," he answered. He had to make sure everything was running smoothly after all.

The archer walked over to Seraph and reached out a hand to ruffle his hair then. She couldn't help the grin that played on her rosy lips when the boy blushed and tried to dislodge her hand. "Nightingale!" he called out exasperated and took a step back to try and fix his hair. He hated it when she did that. Nightingale on the other hand loved watching him get flustered. He was just too adorable. The Game Master huffed and crossed his arms. He glanced back at the center of the town. "It is almost time." Seraph took in a deep breath and closed his eyes to center himself a moment before he completely turned his back on his companion. When he opened his eyes, his once expressive gaze were blank, code rapidly flitting through the blue hues. It was time to send out the message that would initiate the countdown.

╚═╣Good evening all players, this is your Game Master. The first half of the event will be initiated shortly after this message. I hope you all have a happy holiday and enjoy the event. Before they spawn, here is some extra information for you. The monsters that will be appearing do not have a predetermined level. The level of the strongest player in your team will be determining the level of the monster for that party. This means that if the highest party member is level 100, the monsters will also be level 100. This is a feature set to give each group a fighting chance and the most exp. If someone joins your battle, the monster level will not change and both parties will get half of the exp. The party or soloist that kills the most monsters will be determined at the end of the event. Thank you for your patronage and enjoy the event!

--Game Master Time stamp December 24 11:58pm.
╠═╝

Once the message had been sent out, Seraph blinked four times before his personality reemerged and he twirled in a circle and stopped to face Nightingale. He clasped his hands behind him and leaned against the balcony. "Will you be joining the event?" he asked her then.

Nightingale placed a hand on her hip and gave a nod. "Yeah. I think I will. This event is a good way to level up. I won't miss the chance. Meeting the other betas however will be quite the inconvenience. Good thing I have a few things to help disguise myself unless they directly come in contact with me," she mused. At least the betas wouldn't be able to attack her in town since she to was a PC. If they saw her here though, they'd immediately seek Seraph out. She had to stay on guard. "I guess I'll change," she mused and started to leaf through her equipment to pick out the best equipment for this event. She quickly put on her dark blue light armor with the crimson trimmings. A cape hung behind her and she tugged at her finger-less gloves to check the fit though she didn't need to and tapped her boots on the ground. It was a little cold for such a thin outfit but it was a game. She wouldn't freeze to death and it was only a little nippy. She equipped her second choice bow and arrows and caressed the pale blue feathers. She would use her rare item but if the betas saw it, they would recognize who she was immediately. She didn't need to use it. Lastly, she equipped her head gear that looked more like a winged masquerade mask that covered her entire face. Like the rest of her current outfit, it was a baby blue with red trimmings and the feathers themselves looked like they were dipped in blood. It might not look like much, but the outfit was reinforced with a variety of enhancements. That was one thing she loved about the game; you could wear clothing like this and still be well protected if you knew where to purchase and who to ask to craft them for you. Nightingale then hung her hair up in a messy pony tail and smiled at Seraph.

"Well, time to join the fray. I'll talk to you after the event, Seraph. I look forward to seeing what you have come up with."

Seraph beamed at her and gave her a wave. "Enjoy the event!" Nightingale used her acrobat skill to hurry away from the current balcony and took up her place instead on top of the tavern of Vael and readied herself.

7...6...5...4...3...2...1... The clock struck midnight and a firecracker shot up into the air from the center of town and exploded above the area as the bells rang. The sky was illuminated with red and silver lights from the fire cracker. Almost instantly, monsters began to spawn in the town all around the people standing there. Of course, they were all Christmas themed. There were tiny Santa Elves running about, Polar bears with ribbons and bells, China dolls and jack-in-the-boxes hopping about, and growly snowman clawing with their stick arms and angry expressions. At fist, they didn't attack anyone but after they finished spawning, they went after who ever was closest. Nightingale was quick to target one of the toy wolves with her arrow and took in a steadying breath before letting her arrows fly. The wolf howled and turned in her direction but using her rapid shot she was able to get some good hits in and the wolf couldn't reach her where she was so she had pretty easy pickings. She didn't want to win the event. She just wanted to gain experience so being solo made her a bit slow, but that didn't matter. She had a goal and wouldn't waver.
