Gently, it rose higher, unseen as of yet, but working. Working indeed. They didn't notice and soon, they would be gone.

-.-.-

In a place not here or there,
a place you could never identify on a map, globe or square
the grass grows quite tall
especially in Fall
But the seasons, their change is rare

The rivers run quick with poisonous gas
and the winds never follow where they are asked
and up on the hillside
expanding with pride
is the emperor's castle, and throne for his...

"No, no, no," he sighed, scribbling out the words. "I said no naughties. We don't like naughties. Well, we do, but they don't. Them. The public. No taste whatsoever. Hmph!"

He continued to erase and erase and scribble and scribble, until a hole was in the page. But he didn't notice. Raising his head, he gazed out into the empty street and noticed...the most peculiar cloud forming very low over the buildings.

"Curiosity...never a good thing," he told himself, but was already standing.

The turquoise churned, so strangely. He had to follow. How could he not? Gathering his bag, papers and pencil dropped inside, he took off. It occurred to him that he wasn't wearing his bare feet. In fact, boots covered unmatching socks which encircled his cold toes in a wonderful blanket. Glancing around, he hoped no one would come out and see. It was daytime. Rarely anyone was still awake.

Hurrying forward, long coat trailing behind him and hat nearly flying off from the winds the blue green smoke gave off, he found himself following the blob out of the main street. This was good, he was less likely to get in trouble for wearing shoes, but saw it was heading for the forest. Unlike most citizens, he enjoyed the forest, but knew of the myths just as everyone did. The monsters, the witches...The Knotted Forest was hardly a good place to simply follow a strange turquoise cloud.

But he continued.

He did think of his sister, though she would claim he wouldn't if she found out. She would say that he abandoned her, yadeya... He wasn't in any real danger, not that he could see. Crossing out of town and into the back fields, he nodded a good morning to a herd of cows grazing, their deep orange hides so bright in the morning light. One bull stood with them, hide so black, it shown blue when he moved. Animals seemed to quaint to him, smaller friends that he could always rely on. And as expected, each cow offered their own greeting of two nods, a Moo and one hoof stamp.

Next, he had to cross The Trail. The wide road was bustling at nighttime. Now though, no one could be seen travelling for miles both ways. He always figured daytime was more efficient for travelling, but no one listened to him. No one listened to him for a long time now, and it was rather disheartening.

But he chugged onward, hopping into the ditches and pushing tall grass out of his way.

The forest loomed ahead and he grinned. The cloud had grown in size by now, twice as tall, twice as high. Large enough, in fact, to hold about...oh say...four people.

Grinning, he ran forward, a voice already reaching his ears.

"Well, a squirrel threw acorns at me and kicked me out of a tree and now I am sitting on the ground, how are you guys doing?!"

Hurrying around the cloud, he found a girl. She wasn't what he was expecting, but that only intrigued him more.

"Well hello!" he exclaimed, running to the redhead and planting himself down on the ground beside her. He made sure his legs were crossed nicely and he gazed out to the turquoise smoke. "It's a very nice way of travelling, I must say," he commented, pointing to the shapes forming. "Though, I have to say also, that the color isn't my favorite." Eyes narrowing at his cleverness, he faced the redhead adding, "I think it would have looked better as purple."

Molly being bored with nothing to do took out her camera again and stated taking pictures of the scenery. She looked ahead of her and saw more strange turquoise fog floating around. Afraid she was about to be moved again she shoved her camera back into its bag. When she looked up from her side she saw a man running up to her. "Well hello!" He greeted her and then sat down next to her with pretzel legs. "Hi, I thought I was the only person here! Ya' know, squirrels are quite mean sometimes." He smiled and then looked to the turquoise fog. "It's a very nice way of travelling, I must say, though, I have to say also, that the color isn't my favorite." he looked back to her and narrowed his eyes as if he knew something. "I think it would have looked better as purple." "Travelling? ... Your favorite color is purple too?!" Molly looked back at the fog and made her "thinky" face. She jumped up from the ground and ran towards the fog. She stuck her head in leaving her body away from it so she wouldn't "travel" anywhere. She still couldn't see anything threw the thick turquoise, but she took her camera out and took one picture, with that she sat back down next to the man. "I'll make it purple on here!" She went to her settings on her camera and gave the picture a purple tint, she showed the man while smiling, pleased with the color. "So, how'd you get here? My name is Molly Taylor, I just woke up here next to three other people, then this fog surrounded us and I was here. I can't see them now but I think we can all still hear each other.

Ardie had been about to stand up when suddenly everyone disappeared. The cloud/fog/smoke grew larger, and afraid that standing would lower his surface area and make him more susceptible to falling straight through to God knows where, he stayed seated. In fact, he didn't move. Sure, the ground might feel solid, but the fog covered everything and he didn't want to risk it. Maybe they were five feet above ground. Maybe 500. You never knew.

"Of course my last name is Butowski," he muttered, to no one in particular, clutching his legs to him, "What else would it be? Butowski, it's Polish. My whole family is Polish. We're Jewish too, but not really. Just my grandparents. We're second generation. They moved to Poland during the 40s. They got lucky. They were trying to escape the Holocaust. Can you imagine if they stayed? I wouldn't even be born if they stayed. Maybe not. But maybe. A lot of people managed to survive the Holocaust. Well, I suppose a lot is relative, but not everyone died. I mean, there were survivors. But not with good consequences. You know, a lot of people pick on Jews, it's historic, but we run everything. The music industry, Hollywood, you name it. Irving Berlin was Jewish. Everyone knows him. Ever heard of White Christmas? Who hasn't heard of..."

The fog had been thinning, and now he realized he was in a forest. In the distance, he saw the red-haired hyper girl chatting it up with another guy he had never seen before. He still didn't get up. What if he was just hallucinating, and if he took a step he'd fall five stories? Nope, just better to stay here, where he knew it was solid.

"So, how'd you get here? My name is Molly Taylor, I just woke up here next to three other people, then this fog surrounded us and I was here. I can't see them now but I think we can all still hear each other."

Grinning madly, he laughed at her voice. It was filled with happiness. "I got here by my own means," he answered and held out his hand. "Nice to meet you Molly Taylor. And if your friends can hear us, perhaps they should come out."

Standing, he also went to the cloud, believing that the purple tint on her camera was much, much better. Still, he stuck his head in and saw a male figure on the ground. "Are you going to sit there all day and make the grass die?" he accused, bending down and pulling him to his feet. Squinting, he pulled the boy out of the fog and scratched his chin. "I want to say Apple for some reason, but that hardly makes sense. Your name can't be Apple. Who would name their child such a thing? But of course...Apples are delicious. Unless you eat the blue ones. Never cared for those."

He held out his hand anyway. "Good to meet you. This is Molly. Squirrels don't like her and you like killing grass. We're getting to know each other already." Clasping his hands together, his eyes switched between the too happily.

Molly watched as the man stood up and walked over to the fog pulling Ardie out of it. "Good to meet you. This is Molly. Squirrels don't like her and you like killing grass. We're getting to know each other already." "Ardie?! Why would you kill grass? That's not a very nice thing to do, it is so defenseless." She pet the grass to the side of her giving Ardie a sad face. She hopped up again and point at the squirrel in the tree. "He really doesn't like me, I was just sitting on the knot minding my own business when he threw his acorns at me! He really shouldn't waste those though, poorer squirrels could have brought those home to their family. Who knows how many mouth they have to feed." She walked over to the two and looked at Ardie still a little sad that he killed grass.

"Apple? My name isn't apple. It's Ardie," Ardie said, absolutely confused, "Unless you want my real name, which is Gerard. But I go by Ardie."

The comment about killing grass just confused him. For a moment he was wondering if sarcasm was being used her. If that was true, should he also try using sarcasm? With a roll of his eyes, he crossed his arms and tried to say as sarcastically as he could--which wasn't very--"Oh yeah, I love to kill grass. It's my favorite thing to do."

Thinking about that statement made him uncomfortable, though. He didn't like lying. And he hadn't been killing grass in the first place! "Besides, sitting on grass doesn't kill it. Grass is killed when you uproot it, and even then, if you put it into dirt, it doesn't die. And as for squirrels, they have no emotions, so you can't really say whether he likes you or not, because they don't even understand that concept."

Jeez, were these people dumb! Maybe he was on drugs...though how that came about he had no idea. "Excuse me," he asked the man, who seemed to be from here, simply because he hadn't seen him on the cloud, "But where are we? And who are you?"

"Ardie," he laughed, shaking his hand. "Grass does die. Very easily. Don't be so foolish. And of course the squirrels don't like Molly. Look at her hair? It's much too ostentatious for their fashion styles."

The next questions he enjoyed and poked Ardie right on the nose. "Very good, Not Apple. You are in a place you've obviously never been before and therefore that should have been your first question." He thought a moment. "Which I believe it was. Congratulations, now!" Clapping his hands together, he dove back into the turquoise fog, immediately finding another young lady and another young man. By then it was easy, the smoke thinning. He wondered how they would get home, where they came from, but none of that matter now.

Pulling the other two with the rest of the group, he positioned them all in a line. He analyzed them quickly. "Quite the bunch of bananas you are." Chuckling, he tapped all their heads and faced the two new faces. "Now what are your names? Asparagus and Bungee cord?" He pointed at them both.

"...of course the squirrels don't like Molly. Look at her hair? It's much too ostentatious for their fashion styles." "They don't like my hair? Aww, I was trying to make it turquoise before with the fog because it made my leggings turquoise, but it didn't work." She tried to look up at her head not realizing it was physically impossible, instead she just pulled it out of her messy pony-tail and took out a brush from her camera bag, she had almost anything in that bag. Hopefully the squirrels will like it more if it is brushed.

The man went back over to the fog and pulled out Asher and Bennie, Molly was very excited to see them all again. "Hi guys! Look, my hair is brushed!" The man put everyone in a line and Molly was standing on the side next to Bennie. "Quite the bunch of bananas you are." "Bananas? We're bananas? Well, now that explains everything. No wonder I was feeling so yellow before. Now I feel green but before I was definitely yellow."

Molly laughed at the names the man called Bennie and Asher. "Hahah, i'm gonna call you guys that now!" Molly started bouncing up and down excited about there new names. "Hey, can I get a cool name too?!"

"But your name is cool," he laughed. "Molly Taylor. Like a superhero. The best kind of hero in fact."

He faced the other two, who were probably ignoring him or still had travelling sickness. This concerned him. "You aren't sick are you? You can't be sick. We have too much to do."

Again he clapped his hands. He rather liked the idea of becoming the 'clapping hands' guy. "Ignoring the squirrels for a moment, I suggest we leave the forest. If I'm not mistaken, your foggy cloudy smoke was protecting you four from danger. And now, that protection is gone leaving you vulnerable and weak. Very weak," he added, glancing over them all again.

"Follow me!" he announced, starting back the way he came.

Asher heard the voices and followed them, until he had been pulled into a group with the other three from before. He had heard the newcomer's words, and was very suspicious about how he knew the group's names-or at least something close to them. As he heard himself being called Asparagus, Asher raised an eyebrow. "Now I am some kind of vegetable disliked by most children?" He asked. Numerous times had Asher's name been associated with an object. The first thing that came to mind was the word "ashes". His friends called Asher that for about 10 times, then gave up because the nickname didn't-and could never- stick. The second name was "Ash", the protagonist of Pokemon. The name stuck around for longer. But now I'm a vegetable? Asher thought.

Then, the stranger said "You aren't sick, are you? You can't be sick. We have much to do." Asher was confused. Sick from what? The cloud? As if on cue, the stranger said "Ignoring the squirrels for a moment, I suggest we leave the forest. If I'm not mistaken, your foggy cloudy smoke was protecting you four from danger. And now, that protection is gone leaving you vulnerable and weak. Very weak. Follow me!" The stranger began to walk in a certain direction.

Asher was the first to answer. "Protecting us from what? And no, I am not sick." He said as he walked with the stranger, still suspicious. "And my third, and my last, question is where are we going?"

Molly smiles as the strange ma says her name is cool. "Why thank you! It would be so much fun to be a super hero! I'd want to be able to turn any food into cake. Then i'd always have cake!" She follows along as the man leads them off somewhere. "So, what is your name? Are you a super hero?!"

They had questions, listing them off seemingly at once and he couldn't handle it. Not with the town in the state that it was. And in the middle of the day too.

Straightening his collar, he turned about sharply. "I have bad news. We're being watched." Of course they looked, and he waved his arm. "No! No, no, don't look. We need to...need to...hide. Like hide and seek, though...I've never played. You'll teach me sometime," he added, looking at Ardie knowingly. "Until then, I must bid you ado. And beg of you to run. The Emperor is looking for you. All of us anyway. So with that..."

And he vanished.

-.-.-

Pleasant's days saw no awake bodies, most efficient work accomplished during the night, naturally. So to see two squads of men marching down the main street toward the Knotted Forest was a sight. Not that anyone saw. Everyone's eyelids remained quite shut. No one in Pleasant is a light sleeper.

It didn't take long to spot them, the aliens, the ones that came from the turquoise smoke. Prophecy knew of them, spoke of them, cackled and writhed with fear and anxiety. One command was given and the men charged with spears at the ready.

The four Earthlings has little choice.

Easily, he adjusted his collar and approached the pair on the beach. He was impressed, and glad that at least two of them got away. Grinning ear to ear, he gave a wave to Molly and Asher, crouching down where they sat. "Nice hiding place," he said with a wink. "If I may say so," he added, grinning to Asher.

He had watched the pair for the past few moments, noting the hint of friendship. He liked friendship. It smelled like berries.

"But, I am sad to report your comrades aren't in any shape that is good. Especially not a triangle. Those are my favorite," he added, leaning to Molly. "Anyway, we need to hurry off this beach. I'm sure they'll be scouring it any moment now. If we double back to the forest, we might be able to reach Bungi Benni in time before trouble actually starts. And as for Archie...Arnold...Germelda...well, he's already on his way there. A bit ahead of us."

Standing, he dusted the sand from his knees. "Come along then Molly Taylor." Holding out his hand to the redhead, he added to Asher, "You too, c'mon."

The man from before approached Molly and Asher, Grinning ear to ear, waved at them."Nice hiding place," he said winking. "If I may say so," he said, grinning at Asher. Molly looked at him confused, why was he winking? Oh well, Molly doesn't quite understand gestures like that, she never knows what people mean by them. Even waving seems odd to her. "But, I am sad to report your comrades aren't in any shape that is good. Especially not a triangle. Those are my favorite," he added, leaning to Molly. "Anyway, we need to hurry off this beach. Molly still confsed looked over to him, "Germelda!?" She asked confused, but the man had no answer, he just stood up and Molly took his hand, he told her to come with him. Asher followed closely behind as Molly rambled on about zebras. Are they horses, or cats? Maybe they're apes!

Asher stared as the man from before showed up. "Nice hiding place, if I may say so." Then he winked. Asher blushed a little at the gesture. "God, you had to suggest that?" He knew a suggestive... Gesture when he saw one. However, the question was how extreme was it. I hope he only thought about kissing... Asher thought. All his life, he had friends that were... strange in the head. They rubbed off of him, eventually.

"But, I am sad to report your comrades aren't in any shape that is good. Especially not a triangle. Those are my favorite." Asher stared at the guide strangely. Okay... I don't see how that last statement had to do anything with the current situation... Asher thought. "Anyway, we need to hurry off this beach. I'm sure they'll be scouring it any moment now. If we double back to the forest, we might be able to reach Bungi Benni in time before trouble actually starts. And as for Archie...Arnold...Germelda...well, he's already on his way there. "Who the hell is Germelda?" Asher thought as he jogged to follow them.

Molly listened to Asher and saw the guide was completely deaf to him. She assumed he was too distracted to answer. She let go of his hand so she could slow down a bit, the forest was just ahead and she decided slowing down was safe to do. Looking ahead she saw the knotted trees, they were a rich green on some trees and a bright purple on others. How could she not have noticed that before? Once the group reached the forest Molly hid behind a big blue tree. She didn't see where the guide went, but Asher was close by behind an orange tree. The guide must have been close though she heard him rustling in some leaves just in front of her. "These trees are so cool, aren't they Asher?" She smiled looking up at the leaves.
