A Profile on Alice Singh
as told by River Sideras
This month's featured artist is the indie folk singer songwriter duo,Indigo Seas. You may not have heard of them, though you've definitely heard their songs one way or another. We sat down with the couple to get to know the lovebirds behind some of the biggest hits on the radio. This time to make it a little more fun, we asked them to answer the question for their counterpart.

A: Uhhā¦ Alice Singh, singer and songwriter in Indigo Seas and my girlfriend. Sheās born in London, but raised in Trinidad and NYC. [*leans back, shuffles a bit, looks like he has no idea how to answer*]. Sheās super beautiful, sheās got an amazing accent, sheās 28, sheās got a dog named Sampson that she calls Sushiā¦. And she's pretty cool.
Q: Anything that drives you mad about them?
A: Gaaaash, youāre going in heavy right at that start. Nothing reeeeeally bothers me about Alice, but I guess if you need me to force one out...sheās kinda messy? In a cute way, she keeps her clothes in a pile in our room and leaves mugs everywhere and sometimes forgets to drink all her tea after I made it.
But I canāt really say I outright hate it, because when she was on a trip to see her family- this was one of the longest times weāve been apart in a while- I kept finding mugs in the weirdest places all over the house. It felt like she was a squirrel or something hiding her nuts all over the house and I was sort of angry and in love at the same time.
[*pauses for a second, glancing at Alice who looks at him with a probing gaze*] And actually, she does have a bad habit of interrupting me. Iāve never been that good with words, I sort of stumble over the correct way to say things. But Alice almost has too many- she's got ten ways to explain something and a knack for trying to supply me with the words I canāt think of. It was a problem early on if we ever fought, but she's a lot more patient with me now.
Q: Oof - always hard to receive criticism, but you two are pros! Letās change the mood, what about some strengths they may have?
A: Well, I guess what I just said could also be viewed as a strength. Her ability to understand language and write a song is what first drew me to her. I think her combination of words and empathy is what makes her an actually amazing person. Sheāll say she's super shy, but I actually think that's because group social situations overwhelm her. If you get Alice alone in a room, she will give you her undivided attention for hours.
Q: You two have known each other for quite a few years now. How would you describe the otherās general personality?
A: [*laughs*] I'm biased, but Alice is completely captivating. Youāve seen her, she's beautiful, but it's sort of beyond that? Franco, drummer of Vandals, said she āhad somethingā the first time we saw her walk onstage. She has it offstage too, a magnetism, but she's too shy to really use it properly. She's soft, playful, but has one of those fiery angers that scares the shit out me sometimes. Sheās also stubborn as hell.
Q: So other than making amazing music for yourselves and others, what talents do they have outside of music?
A: For the most part I do a lot of the cooking, but its basic stuff. Everyonce and awhile Alice decides we are going to feast and spends the whole day cooking caribbean food. Listen, no matter you think the best meal is, this is it.
Q: Alright, youāve probably told the story a hundred times but letās hear it from you again River. How did you two meet?
A: Alice was an opener act at a music festival I was headlining with Midnight Vandals back in the day. I managed to sneak away from whatever band itinerary we had going on and actually got to check out some music. I think her mom was there that day? Anyway, she played her song Where Did I Go and I was instantly sold. I went backstage to meet her and it was the basic me being socially awkward and her being too shy to hold the conversation very long. So I started going to her showās every week that I could while we were recording that fall. It probably looked so desperate, but we actually started off innocently. She was super talented and I wanted to make sure the world could hear it- I was also looking at getting into producing and she was the perfect opportunity.
Q: So we know you guys have a dog, explain the others parenting style?
A: Oh shit, listen, can we just make the whole interview about that dog? His name is Sushi, he's a pomeranian, and he's unapologetically actually our child. The hierarchy of our house definitely goes Alice, Sushi, and then me. Sushi thinks Alice is the whole world and I'm pretty sure he thinks I am the hired help.
Q: Have you guys introduced the other to your parentās yet? Howād that go?
A: [*flops back on the chair and groans loudly*] Listen, my mom is wild. She can get anyone to do anything she wants, I think it's part of her āsingle mother with a chaotic sonā schtick. The first time I took Alice over there, my mom got Alice so drunk and they giggled on the porch for hours. I wasnāt invited or something, they just got up and walked into the backyard without me around 10pm.
Q: So whatās your process usually when writing a song? How do you decide which ones you keep and which ones you sell?
A: We don't go at a song as a ākeeperā or āsellerā. We always have a rotation of half baked ideas that worm their way out of us eventually. Some songs we finish and finally get to listen to and we both feel like it's not really us- maybe we were telling someone else's story or it's not the vibe we were feeling for that album. Those are the ones that get put on the back burner or sold. Weāve had a few hired gigs that we had to create music for someone specifically and that was super interesting. I think our team works well because Alice and I both trust each other as professionals- I know she's the best at what she does and I know she thinks the same of me.
Q: You two are honestly couple goals - though one has to wonder, do you two ever argue? How do you two handle it when it happens?
A: I am very bad at actually getting angry at her. I get angry in the moment and then by the time I remember to say something Iām over it. It's something weāve talked about and she knows I do it, but it's one of those endless struggles. Sheās much better at speaking her mind when she feels she needs to and Iām glad for it. Weāve lived with each other for two years so we know each other's pet peeves. She leaves wet towels in the bedroom, I finish the pot of coffee before she's awake. I think what's important is trying your best to avoid the things that make the other person's day harder.
