She loved Derrick so much. They'd been trying ever since they've gotten married, and now, their dreams and prayers were finally coming true. They were pregnant. Sammie was going to burst if Derrick wasn't home soon.
She'd made a big banner, it hanging on the ceiling, reading, "Congratulations, Daddy!" with a rattle painted by the "y". Sammie made the banner herself, similar to the one Derrick made for her when they met in high school.
Scott Andrews was returning home from work, as usual. He drove down the same old road, going to the same house, where his wife was probably flipping through the channels on their flatscreen. He sighed, seeing her sad, and went upstairs as he always did, and played his guitar. Scott was in the same routine life he'd been in for years now. Yet, everything seemed so different for some reason. Yes, he'd lost his son recently, but it felt as if a new life would be brought soon, and that gave him the tiniest slither of inspiration for a song. He'd jotted down the simple lyrics,
"Life, such a precious thing."
It had been a total of seven months since sheād lost her son and everything had changed completely. Sheād stopped spending time with her husband not because she didnāt love him, but because every time they were together it ended in a fight, because of her. She blamed herself heavily for what had happened to Oliver and it had definitely put a strain on her marriage.
She had slept half the day, drugged up on her depression medication, than sheād made herself a cup of tea but hadnāt drunken any of it. Sheād lost a noticeable of weight, because she couldnāt bring herself to eat. She sat on the couch mindlessly flipping through the channels, before finally slipping in the DVD of Oliverās sixth birthday party and sheād nearly worn the disk out watching it so much. She knew itād probably piss Scotty off when he got home, heād had to take it away from her and hid it, because it only mad her depression that much worse.
She made her way back over to the couch pulling a throw pillow to her lap and hugging it to her chest as the Camera fell on Oliver chasing Scotty around the back yard with a squirt gun. Scotty had been the most amazing father. Daisy, their golden retriever started to bark, which meant Scotty was home and Chrissy knew she should get up and turn it off, but she couldnāt bring herself to do it.
It had easily been the worst week of Derrickās life. For starts on Monday heād gone out with his best friend Scott for drinks, only to end in the two of them getting kicked out of the bar. Tuesday heād gotten a parking ticket and a speeding ticket in the same day. Wednesday, some old women had back into his car and lastly Thursday heād gotten ālaid offā, which was the nice way of saying. Thanks for your services pal, but your fired. Only heād gotten up this morning like any other morning and pretended to go to work, because he wasnāt exactly sure how he was going to break it to his wife yet.
He loved her so much, the that thought of letting her down was agonizing. It didnāt help that theyād been trying to have a baby, which was all the poor girl wanted was to be a mother, like her friend Christy had been, but he couldnāt even give that too her and now heād lost half their income. It was frustrated and heād spent the whole day sitting in the park dressed in a suite, getting strange looks, trying to figure out exactly how he was going to tell her.
He pulled in the drive way, got out of his car slipping inside. Heād convinced himself that he just had to man up and tell. āBaby? Iām home.ā He called out to her as he made his way into the living room, freezing when he saw the banner reading Congratulations Daddy.
Scott came downstairs and saw Christina watching the video. "Baby.. that's not helping you, and you know that." He sighed, and walked up behind her on the couch, wrapping his arms in front of her, and kissing her cheek. "I love you." He sighed, just waiting to hear the usual, "I don't think you do. If you did, then why aren't you helping me?"
Truth was, how could he help his wife get over the death of their son, when he wasn't over it himself? Oliver was his child. His son. A father and son should never be separated, ever. But, Scott knew Oliver was in a better place now, and it was all part of a big plan God had for them.
Sammie squealed as Derrick walked in, and saw his face. "Baby, you're home!" She hugged him tightly, her head on his shoulder, and arms around his waist. "I love you." She said, and hugged him, smiling.
She was honestly at a loss for words.
Finally, she let go of Derrick, and held his hands. "Sorry.. you know how excited I get, and especially about this. Oh, baby, I love you, so, so, so, so much." She kissed his cheeks, then giggled. "I'm sorry.. were you gonna tell me something, Derry?" She loved using that nickname.
She head her dog stop barking as she jumped off the couch to great Scott, whoās footsteps she heard coming down the stairs but she couldnātā pull her eyes away from the screen. It was painful, because she knew the second Scott said something or touch her sheād get defensive and push him away, because sheād turned into a grieving mother who was feeling to help her own husband. She knew he was in just as much pain, but she couldnāt push her own pain aside for him, the way he did for her.
"Baby.. that's not helping you, and you know that." she heard him sigh, before he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her cheek and her entire body tensed. "I love you." He sighed like he already knew what was coming.
She pushed him off of her, turning the tv. Off before she stood up from the couch. āYeah, I know itās not helping me.ā She spat bitterly. āI get that Scotty, but I canāt move on like you. Itās not that simple for me.ā She knew it was cruel to accuse him of being able to move on like he wasnāt hurting. She tried to fight the tears the threatened to escape her eyes, but it was no use they sliced down her cheeks. āEverything so fucked up, but your acting like nothingās happened.ā She breathed through her tears.
She slipped out the back door then, wondering if heād follow, even though it would probably end in them fighting, she hoped heād follow, because at least when he was there she wasnāt alone. She light herself a cigarette, taking a long drag off of it, wiping away her tears.
"Baby, you're home!" Sammie squealed excited and he smiled softly as she came over to him. [/b]"I love you."[/b] sh said wrapping her arms around him hugging him and he hesitated before wrapping his arms around her.
How the hell was he supposed to tell her that heād lost the man source of income, when she was so happy that after all these years, she was finally going to be a mom. That was practically all sheād wanted since theyād gotten married. There was no way he could tell her, at least not now.
"Sorry.. you know how excited I get, and especially about this. Oh, baby, I love you, so, so, so, so much." she said kissing his cheek and pulling him from his thoughts. He was honestly so stunned, he was at a loss for words. "I'm sorry.. were you gonna tell me something, Derry?" she asked and he loved the way she called him Derry.
He rand his fingers through her hair, pulling himself together quickly. āThatās the best news Iāve heard all week sweetie. My news can waitā He smiled kissing her forehead. He pulled her close wrapping an arm around her waist and lifting her chin so she had to hold his eyes, before he lend in and kissed her, deeply and lovingly. āI love you Sammie Marks, were finally starting our family.ā He breathed against her lips, pulling away. āWe should go to dinner to celebrate.ā He said āWhere ever you want to go.ā He shrugged.d

"Everything's so fucked up, you act like nothing happened."
How could she constantly shoot him down like that? It's like they weren't married, they never had emotions for each other. They were just strangers in the night who decided to throw their problems on the other.
"Yeah? Well, he wasn't just your fucking son, Catherine! He was MINE too!" He yelled at her, as she slammed the door.
God, he hated getting in fights with her. He didn't know how to help either of them. She always says he's heartless. He's stubborn. He couldn't take it anymore..
He just wasn't that monster she thought he was. Scott didn't want to follow her because he knew if he did, then she'd just blow up again, telling him how much of an emotionless creep he was.
Sammie just couldn't believe they were finally going to start a family. She'd been waiting for so long.
But, something wasn't right. From the way he hesitated to hug her, the nervous running of his hand through his hair, and the "deer in the headlights" look he had, she knew something was up. She always knew if Derrick was hiding something. That's what came with years of marriage.
"Derry?" She asked, looking up at him. "Derry, baby, what is it?" She also, now, had fear in her eyes, and she felt her grip tighten on his shirt, causing wrinkles to form. "You can tell me anything.."
