"When All Through the House"

"When All Through the House"

0 INK

"Fistbump for surviving another family Christmas?" Jadeling muttered.

1,211 readers have visited "When All Through the House" since ViceVersus created it.

Introduction

'Twas the week after Christmas, when all through the House .. "

Despite heavy reluctance, the families of the House (a brooding, secretive organization of runic magic) have agreed to spend Christmas together. One would think that a group so obsessed with blood ties and close-knit relations would be more receptive to the idea of togetherness. However, a schism has grown down the center of the fold - between the Tano branch, and the Galletti branch.

Ethan Tano's name has caused ripples in the world of High Magic. Their willingness to work with the SCD and improve the "public nature" of High Magic is seen as the greatest of betrayals by the other members of the House.

Michele Galletti is becoming increasingly reclusive, hiding away in his study, whether working on academia or plotting to reclaim the Godeaux (which has grown curiously, amusingly sentient) no one knows.

Both families have children, and those children are caught in their own webs. Jadeling's recent, hush-hush exploits into the realm of combat magic; Cloasse's strange friendship with none other than the Godeaux, and Jase's curiously growing resentment of the home and family he once loved - it all boils down to presents, Christmas turkey, and lots of pretending to know great uncles and aunts no one's ever met before ..

Michele, unsurprisingly, took the decimation of the roll as a sign of victory, and preened happily as he listened to the resulting conversation. Jase knew well enough not to say exactly what they had been learning - he deserved all the pride that Michele could dredge up from the depths of whatever organ was in the place of a heart.

"Jase has been studying with me... naturally, it's rather sensitive work. Not the sort of thing that can be spoken of in company such as this. Regardless of what he has been doing, Jasen has been doing it very well. I could not be more impressed with someone's magical capabilities than I am of Jasen's."

Cloasse ruefully thought that Jase's head might inflate so much that it simply exploded if Michele kept on the way he was going. Could not be more impressed, indeed! And right after mention of her tattoos, too - these weren't transferable! The Galletti daughter mirrored Jade and cut through a vegetable with rather unnecessary force.

"Hipster," Ida repeated, outwardly amused at the conversation and antics at the table. "What an odd phrase!"

"Jade, why don't you .. tell everyone what you're learning at school!" Marceline redirected things smoothly.

All eyes clapped onto the Tano heir. Her jaw dropped slightly, at the attention.

"Uh, well, we just rounded out the semester with, like, Stein theory and stuff. And how Clek's Variable only works with some figures in the Aegean set," the girl's eyebrows drew together. Marcy nodded as though this made perfect sense.

"Well, we know how Clek can be, sometimes!" Ethan gave a disarming smile, picking up a discarded piece of his roll, and popping it into his mouth.

"Yeah, I mean, it's alright," Jade hinged on the word. As she started her next sentence, more energy poured from her words. "There's so much happening at the school, though, it's great. I've been sitting in on some extra classes, when I have a free period here or there, meeting lots of great friends, everyone's just great, y'know .. "

"Extra classes, Jadeling? That's marvelous!" Marceline beamed.

"Yeah, I don't miss being homeschooled," Jade grinned. In her lap, Thermometer raised his head, squeaked, turned about, shifted position, and fell back into another nap.

There was a snort of derision from one of the Galletti guests, and it needn't have been surprising to know that it was Michele who sported nothing but distaste for public schooling. Education, to those in the House, was a private manner, carefully tailored to one's purpose and magical prowess. It simply was not possible to teach a hundred what you could teach one in the same time.

"It's nice to hear that you are enjoying school, Jade," Ida graciously nodded. "I hear of so many children disliking it immensely. You must be quite special."

Cloasse, meanwhile, was frowning. Exactly how much time did school take up? Jade was attending her classes and extra ones, with time left over for friends? But...

"I could've sworn that I'd seen you in Blixon, Jade," Cloasse ventured in an almost conversational tone. "With Mister Gerasene? I'm sure it was you."

She raised an eyebrow at the expressions her parents wore.

"At least, I thought it was. I could be mistaken, of course."

Thunderstruck. Jade's mouth formed a perfect o.

"You must - I .. I've never been to Blixon. That's like, the Crossworld or something, isn't it?" the Tano heir chuckled. She leaned back, touching her chin, the back of her hair, nearly upending Thermometer on her lap. Jade cast a helpless glance at her father. "Right? It's .. "

"Blixon City, yes, it's the Crossworld," Ethan laced his fingers together, settling in closer to the table.

"Never been there before in my life!" Jade chirped.

This was, of course, a lie. Jade was spending almost all of her free periods in Blixon City with Legion Gerasene, learning combat magic and discussing her future. The ex-demon had become a mentor of sorts to the girl, reluctantly, for whatever reason. He was a close friend, a close companion. Jade would shrivel up and die if her parents knew she was spending most of her free time in Blixie, the Crossworld's watering hole.

But looking closer at Cloasse, again, and really looking at her, Jade thought she could remember a dim gray shadow always in the corner, during her sessions with Legion. Oh my God. It's why Cloasse had seemed familiar. It was who Legion would occasionally wave at. Please, please, please, no.

"Anyways!" Jade tried to change the topic. "School! Yeah, school is great. I'm learning just so many .. things."

"But if you're being taught by Legion, that's good too, isn't it?" Cloasse asked, happily oblivious to whatever damage she was doing to Jade's cover. "He's a very knowledgeable person. He's very polite, too! In fact, I'm quite sure I've seen you with him - he waves, you see, and I do take notice of things that aren't ink and parchment, honestly, I do. What is it that Legion teaches you? It must be fascinating!"

Ida considered her daughter, brow furrowing just enough to cause the slightest of wrinkling in her skin. She may not spend a lot of time with the girl or be particularly interested in what she was up to, but it was hard to miss something as obvious as the scope of Cloasse's memory when a five-year-old could recite entire paragraphs after a mere few readings of a textbook. Relaxing, the woman smiled rather differently than she had been prior, and that was because this smile was for Michele alone.

Michele grinned back, and for the duration of such an odd expression, he looked quite handsome and human.

"I did think you looked awful familiar when we arrived, but I didn't want to ask where we may've met in case I had been mistaken, but it's come to me now. You're with Mister Gerasene when I see him in Blixon," Cloasse affirmed, nodding.

Marceline leaned close to Ethan. "Who's Legion?" she whispered. Ethan did not answer. His eyes were fixed on his daughter.

"Seriously, I don't, like. It's not me, I'm at the University all day!" Jade lifted her hands in the air, shrugging her shoulders together as though for protection. "I don't even know how to get to this Crossworld place. Like."

The Tano heir began stabbing at the food on her plate again. No one was speaking to fill the silence. She squirmed in her seat.

Ethan took pity on the girl. He lifted the platter of meat in front of him, eyebrows raised.

"Who wants more?" he smiled.

Jase thrust out his plate instantly. The platter was passed. Jade exhaled. Her head drooped forward. Ethan started a polite conversation topic, something about the recent recall of Malachi of Desiat's published works - Jade took the opportunity to shoot Cloasse a rather hurt and bewildered glance.

Why? her eyes seemed to beg.

Thermometer sniffed up his nose at Clo, twisting around an about-face so his hindquarters were firmly facing the young scrit.

Jade's hands were shaking as she took up her fork once more. Why ..

"But I could've sworn..." Cloasse trailed off, not uncertain but unused to having to think about people she had seen as opposed to text. "I just thought..."

"Legion?" Ida mouthed, an eyebrow raised as she sent a questioning look towards her husband. Michele's reply was merely a smug, loping smile, and then he had turned his attention to Ethan's latest topic.

"You can't have been that surprised, surely," the man hummed. Of course, Michele liked to think he was all-knowing.

Meanwhile, Cloasse was considering her cat and her cousin with confusion. She reflected Jade's begging glance, brow pulled low with a severe lack of understanding. Somewhere in the back of her head, Thermometer sighed. It wasn't good when a paper cat understood more than his human, after all.

"Did I say something wrong?" the Galletti child wanted to ask. "What did I do?" Instead, she merely offered Marceline a meek shadow of a smile and gestured hopefully at the dish in front of the woman.

"It's very well seasoned, ma'am."

"You've done nothing wrong, Cloasse!" Ethan gave the girl a reassuring smile. "I'm sure you just saw someone who looked like Jade."

"I've .. " Jade's heart was still thumping in her chest. She fiddled with her fork, trying to force her heart back to a normal pace. "I've just got one of those faces, I guess."

"I do wonder," continued Ethan, refilling his water glass and passing the pitcher to his wife, "what the Crossworld holds for a Galletti daughter. Doesn't seem the sort of place someone would normally hang around .. "

The attention was turned back on Cloasse. Jade refused to look her in the eye. All she wanted was to stop talking about the Crossworld at all ..

"Of course, Jadeling. One of those faces," the Galletti matriarch agreed with a Ida's hand stilled around her glass, fingers millimetres from the condensation gathering on the cool surface. Michele's brow rose just slightly, and then lowered over narrowed eyes which settled on the wider, matching pair sunk into his daughter's gaunt face.

"I..." It was Cloasse's turn to feel her heart nudge her ribs, insistently reminding her that she didn't quite know what to say. "Well... Well, there are some nice book stores. And, I mean, I hear that the magic used there is full of anomalies, and anomalies are fundamental in research... I - I also have friends there."

"We would prefer it if she were to remain at home more often," Michele stated, raising his chin as if daring Ethan to make comment on his daughter's actions. Of course, it wasn't out of any desire to protect Cloasse, but instead to protect his own reputation. "There are far better book stores closer to home."

"Our own libraries are likely more than adequate," Ida commented with a half-smile. "Unfortunately, we can't keep her from straying. Curiosity takes her from us." Ida almost sounded sad. "Marceline, tell me... Who made your beautiful dress?"

Almost.

Ida didn't seem particularly interested in the question, and Marceline, in turn, was not particularly interested in the answer. It was filler. Distraction. Deadwood, meant to try and stop any sort of poisonous darts between the two men of the room. Still, the Tano matriarch gave a valiant stab at an answer, while passing the water pitcher to Jase.

"Oh! It's from Chanel, I got it while visiting .. "

"These friends you say," Ethan pressed, sitting forward in his seat just a little. His expression and tone were completely conversational. He brought the cool glass of water to his lips, sipped, then lowered. "Are they, perhaps, the magical anomalies you're studying?"

What an odd question. There was something about her father's comment that made Jade frown. Something else was going on here, something that she was not privy to.

Legion would know! she assured herself, then glanced quickly at her father, filled with the irrational fear that he could read her thoughts, and by extension, her admission.

In her lap, Thermometer purred like a pencil sharpener, and coiled up into a tiny ball.

"Chanel." Ida drawled the word as if tasting it on her tongue.

Michele pointedly ignored the wives' chatter. All mindless entertainment in the form of Edan discovering his daughter may've been in and out of the Crossworlds aside, Galletti did not want whatever dalliances his daughter may've been involved in aired at this dinner table.

"Well... I couldn't really experiment on one of them. She's - I... just wouldn't want to try. But I did try - with Fletcher!" Cloasse enthused, a smile brushing onto her face like the hint of blush that crawled onto her cheeks. "I thought it might be interesting, but it really wasn't quite as exciting as I'd hoped."

As Cloasse named her friend, Michele's knee jerked underneath the table, bumping into Ida's and prompting a disgruntled frown. "Michele, would you like some more water? Jasen, dear, pass your uncle the water, please."

Jasen's 'uncle' was too busy staring down his daughter to even notice whether or not Jase carried out his aunt's request.

"I've met a few other people, too... but it's mostly the books I go for," Cloasse hastily amended. "Only the books."

Fletcher? The face of Blixie's reluctant bartender swam into familiar memory. Jade exhaled slowly. The more that everyone talked about the Crossworld, the more likely it was that her cover was going to get blown .. again. She had to find a way to derail the conversation, and fast.

Across the table, Jasen set the pale yellow water pitcher down with a dull thud. His uncle's water glass was still totally full. Jase's expression was cautious as he beheld Michele's uncharacteristically animated reaction. Never seen him get so --

OW.

Jasen hissed. Someone had kicked him under the table. He looked up to see a fierce expression on his Jade's face. Thermometer perked up from his sister's lap, bracing paper paws on the table and added his two cents worth to the staredown.

"Actually," the Tano heir clenched her fork, "I'd like the water, please."

"All yours," Jase gestured in front of him.

"Gonna pass it, then?"

"If your foot can reach over here, I think your arm can, too."

"I'm not reaching. I don't want to catch whatever it is you've got."

Their tones were terse. Eyes peeled off of Cloasse and Ethan.

"Jadeling," Marceline whispered.

"Son, pass your sister the water," Ethan reiterated.

Jasen remained stony, immobile, until he received the barest of nods from Michele. Then and only then did he heft the pitcher and deliver it to her side of the table. He took care to slosh onto the tablecloth.

"Thank you," Jadeling's tone turned sweet in an instant. She refilled her glass. "Great meal so far, mom."

Whilst the two bickered, Michele pinned Cloasse with a look. He did not frown, nor raise an eyebrow - he didn't even move his head. He merely caught his daughter's eye, and then held her there with the sheer disappointment wafting from him.

Cloasse broke their contact first, dipping her head down as Marceline implored for her daughter's co-operation. Her fork was placed delicately on the edge of the plate, and then her hands were clasped in her lap. The Galletti child's eyes traced the outline of the cutlery before her, but she did not make a move to reintegrate herself with the 'conversation'.

"Manners, Jasen," Ida murmured, elegant brow raised at the young man before the same expression was turned on her husband. "Michele, please call the driver." Cloasse's head jerked up - was she being sent home? Was her mother going to take them all back home and away from this 'family' dinner? "The presents will be required soon and they are stored in the car."

Michele grimaced - the very thought of presents made nauseated him; so much happiness. Without a word, he removed a nondescript card from the pocket of his suit jacket and tore it neatly in half. "He will return as we end our marvellous meal," the man rumbled.

The child glanced over at her cat. Now he wasn't even speaking to her. Vaguely, Cloasse wondered if this is what heartbreak felt like. Still, this feeling didn't warrant all of the high-pitched whining and shrieking that she'd heard in Blixie. Perhaps not.

They ate in relative silence for the next few minutes. Forks scraped against plates, platters were passed stiffly, without eye contact. Jade chewed slowly on a roll. Marceline pushed her food around with a fork, a slight frown on her face. Ethan was just finishing, making the last small, neat cuts to his meat before popping them into his mouth with great care. Jase was still heaping food onto his plate.

"I hope everyone got enough to eat!" Marceline chirped. "We do have a desert, but we can take that later."

The peal of the doorbell rang out through the room. Jade shoved her chair back so hard the legs screeched against the floor. Thermometer nearly went flying.

"I got it!" the Tano heir blurted, standing. She cupped her hands for the little paper cat, and rushed out of the room.

Ethan watched her go with a measured expression on his face. It was often hard to tell what he was thinking, but just before he turned his attention back to the table, the barest hint of a grin lifted the corner of his mouth.

"Ida? That will be your driver. And possibly our cue to retire to the living room .. "

____________________________

Jade stalked through the hall to the foyer. Her head was buzzing, but she kept her eyes fixed on Thermometer. His was licking hi tiny folded paws, and seemed quite content where he was. His tail curled around her thumb.

She veered to the wrap-around sofa, gently putting the paper cat on its large arm.

"Sorry, hang on just one second," she whispered to him. Making sure he stayed put, she returned to the door and yanked it open.

Thoroughly blinded by the Colorado sunlight bouncing off the snow, she took in the Galletti's driver and the cart of presents sitting on their porch.

"Hi," the teen said dully.

She heard heels clicking behind her. They were not her mother's. Jade backed up, turning to look at Ida on her way to the door. The blotchy purple splotches from the sun made the Galletti matriarch seem positively psychedelic.

"All yours," Jade drawled, walking away from the door back to the sofa where she had left Thermometer. She sucked in her breath. She dashed to the cushions, upending them, glancing around. Her heart sank.

The tiny paper cat was gone.

Re: [OOC] "When All Through the House"

Hot topics for the Christmas dinner discussions:

1. Cloasse's "friendship" with the Godeaux.
2. Jadeling's plans to not go into High Magic, but join the SCD (hopefully.)
3. Jase running away from home and learning to hate his family.
4. Marceline bought a new set of table runners, and they are just to die for.
