"A smile a day keeps the fears away"

a character in “Who Dares Wins?”, as played by S1mon

Description

Image
Name: Sven Amilio
Nickname: Doesn't have a nickname per se, though due to his green hair and if he'd not in people's good books, then he has names related to that.
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Considers himself to be straight

Image

Appearance:
Sven stands tall at a height of 5'6, not towering over tons of people, nor looking up to tons of people, so he was inbetween, the average, yet he didn't seem average of the common man with the most striking feature part of himself - his hair. Wild green! It even looked wild too, as it was long and grew from his scalp and sprouted out on all sides. If he wanted, he could dye it another colour, but he'd look fantastic either way with his hair which was like a snuggle-rug and did keep him warm (though in the summer, it also made him sweat). Everything had to have pro's and con's.

Though his favourite colour is green, which is why he retains his natural colour hair like the rest of his family and others, he sees green as the colour for him (seeing that it means hope and wisdom, and likes to think he is smart and a bright light to shine in the darkness). Green was also fantastic at camouflaging himself to stay hidden, so it helps, but as far as his attire was concerned, he wore anything that he felt comfortable, whether it would be white, red, cream, blue, anything. As long as it does it's job.

Sven has a tan-like skin, with a bright face where his golden eyes and his soft complexions on his skin shone outwards, complimented by his smile since he likes to remain cheery. Due to him doing runs every morning to give him some space and keep him healthy, there is no doubt whatsoever that Sven keeps in shape and makes sure he keeps it all. Afterall, he has to remain strong and best way to be strong and feel strong inside, is to be physically fit.

Image

Personality:
Sven has a bright, illuminate personality, carrying an aura of a friendly nature. He is a really upbeat, cheerful, and friendly person. Sometimes he tends to talk too much without knowing it while being friendly, but despite such a flaw, he does encourage those around him. When others feel depressed, he's once of the first, if not the first, to be at their side to make sure they are okay, and if not, he will do his best to make them better. His friendlyness is often described as aggressive, as ironic as it sounds, with little sense of social boundary.

When he's in the mood, he is also quite energetic and puts his heart and soul in the things he loves, which brought about his love for music. His favourite instrument and the one he tends to play is the trumpet. Other instruments he likes is those that he is in control, how he can control how a sound sounds, to make sure he gets the right tone to come through. However, if he does not feel his usual jumpy and energetic self with lack of motivation, then his music would also fall aswell.

Sven has quite a heart due to how lovable and caring he can be, already having a crush on a girl, only to be rejected as his type of music was no longer desired as much as it once was. It's hard for Sven to let go off some things, especially something or someone close to his heart, which is why he begun music in the first place, in remembrance of someone who did love, and now the only thing he has left.

Likes:
  • Music
  • Food (who doesn't)
  • People being happy
  • Running/Exercising/Sports

Image
Dislikes:
  • People being upset (within reason, but he still tries to help even those that don't want the help when they do need it)
  • Bullies (though has no choice but to go through the daring game in order to get anyway)
  • His brother, Devin
  • Those who break hearts

Ambitions/Aspirations:
  • Find others like him to play with
  • Not mess up his new start at Harlow High
  • To increase his skill in playing music, maybe writing songs, or singing them since he has a voice, but for singing, he uses the [mute] button
  • Become popular, though he wasn't aware of the daring game until he went to Harlow High, and now dreads what may happen, but if he don't go through it, he will be looked down on and he can't fulfill any of his aspirations, or even find someone to love him...

Image
Fears:
  • Being alone
  • Not finding any friends
  • Being bullied
  • Rejection!

Background:
Sven was born to Christine and Victor Amilio. Well, that's how it was for him, and it was all he really accepted. His family was....complicated, and the family he was, he wasn't even sure if it was his home in the first place. Yet wherever they went, his mother, Christine, and his annoying evil brother Devin went also. Sven hated being looked down upon, so he was over the moon when he first went to school, and unlike home, he was....a big hit. His mother was the one who could care less. Afterall, she often slept around in her youth so it was unknown which child belonged to which father, and how close the ties were between his brother and an other unknown siblings who could be anyway.

He hated not knowing something, and was determined to find out. Thankfully his father, Victor was his true father and it was from him that he learnt music and attended concerts to watch his father play. Being at school, being with his father, was the best times of his life, before his mother said they were moving, but there was no sign of father until Devin told him that he was dead, before saying coldly, how he had other fathers to choose from, before leaving him in his miserable state, being all alone in his weeping.

Before, Sven just thought that Devin was just winding him up and constantly keeping him on his toes, but he was evil, cold, inhuman, and did his mother even have a heart when she passed from one man to the next. Regardless, he continued playing music in memory of his father, ignoring Devin, no matter how many times he took his instruments away before he played a dare to get it back. The instruments were all he had, so he had no choice to do them.

He missed his father. Not only did they go to concerts, but he took them away abroad, where he got his tanned skin. Sven loved the beach, and surfing with the others and then playing his instruments. Devin had no right, and never will, so he kept his stuff under lock and key. It was no way to live, and then as he came home from his last day of school, looking forward to going Harlow High after the summer, Devin asked him if he was looking forward to it, in which Sven nodded, before Devin push him against the wall, telling him of how people may be, how people's love interests grow and some get desperate, as he begun to maul him with his hand, on his face and round his waist.

Sven didn't know what on earth was happening, as he tried to bail out but Devin kept pushing him back, "What's wrong", he says, "Harlow High is for big boys, and big boys must know how to be big boys", as his hand crept under his shirt, along his skin and then reaching downwards. Sven continued to yell, telling him to get off, but then all hell broke loose when he felt Devin reaching lower, as he headbutted his chest to push him back and then pushed him away.

Devin merely laughed, "Brother is learning, but you need more than that, especially if you hit me", as he then slashed at him, kicked him in the stomach against the wall, and then threw him aside, "I'll tell mother you got beaten by big boys" he said, "Harlow High is not known to be High for nothing. There, your on your own if anything happens. It's not like your other schools, and that's all I'm saying. I'm not saving you if you get into trouble. You need to learn to defend yourself, or your done for. Happy dreams", before leaving him, still in pain.

Sven packed his belongings, took his fathers' money which he knew was stashed away. Devin might have the strength, but he wasn't as clever and cunning as he was, immediately leaving them and having time to cry to himself in his fathers' old retreat cabin. He missed his old school, he missed his games, he missed his friends, and now was afraid about going Harlow High. However, he soon lightened up to the idea, afterall, Devin had lied before, as he returned home.

Everytime Devin came towards him an odd way, he could stay well clear, or tell him to go away in a fighting posture, with Devin merely saying, "Your growing brother, your growing", which instantly made him realise that Devin merely wished to make sure he could be strong afterall and was strong enough. All the talk was just that. He wanted to scare him into action, and now Devin weren't hurting him anymore. Maybe he was alright afterall....but that still didn't explain why he was still nasty to him when they were both alot younger.

How will things go at Harlow High? Leaving with his usual attitude to a new school as usual, Sven leaves with his usual smile. Only a matter of time will everything be explained.......

So he was an Amilio. Sherry had heard of his brother, Devin, and the stories that came along with Devin's name, but she could tell that Sven was a whole lot nicer and more practical. She just knew it.

She shot the rubber band across the classroom when the teacher had his back turned, and watched as it landed perfectly on Sven's desk. She bit her lip as she watched the boy figure out how to crack the code. Sven gave a thumbs up after reading the message, and Sherry silently giggled to herself. At least she wouldn't have to sit alone during lunch.

The rest of the class seemed to go by in a blur. The bell finally rang, and everyone started to rush out of the classroom. Sherry being the naturally disorganized person that she was took a little bit more time. Once she was all packed, she headed over to Sven's desk.

She tapped on his shoulder and put on a cheerful smile as she said, "Sven right? I would shake your hand, but i'm holding all these books." She started to talk more quickly, as she didn't want to be late for her next class. "I'm the one who sent you the rubber band message. Glad you figured it out! We can meet by the entrace to the cafeteria and then we'll get the yearbook photo taken care of and stuff, if that's okay with you."
Sherry started to walk towards the doorway of the classroom. "It was nice meeting you! welcome to Harlow!" she said right before she exited. She speedwalked towards the english classroom, making sure to keep her head down so the seniors wouldn't notice her as much.

After Biology finished, which seemed to drag longer than expected, probably due to the fact that he spent a longer time in the lecture hall compared to outside where he had been confronted with all the seniors. It wasn't that Biology was a lesson that dragged, but being the new kid, being related to Devin, having all eyes stare at you, trying to buckle down, it all added up in the end. At the end of class, he heard all books being slammed shut and a whole commotion erupted in the packing, before one-by-one, his fellow classmates all dashed off to their next class. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't leave so quick as Mr Gordon cornered him to give him the catch up, and still having the "expecting what was to come" look. There was Devin earlier telling him not to mess things up for him, when he was messing up things for him. It annoyed him, yet he didn't show it, keeping his cool.

As he packed things away, he felt a tap on his shoulder, as he then turned around, seeing a young blonde female whose hair was in two ponytails with a wide and cheery smile splashed over her face. Was it that this girl was being polite, or maybe too polite, or too excited. Then again, he was like a new discovery now, and how excited scientists get when they discover something new. Not that Sven was something new, it was probably his hair as usual, always his hair, or something to do with Devin. With her smile, it couldn't be anything to do with Devin which was a good job, as long as word didn't spread around the school that he and Devin were related, or Devin would go ape at him if he done anything wrong.

"Sven right? I would shake your hand, but i'm holding all these books...I'm the one who sent you the rubber band message. Glad you figured it out! We can meet by the entrance to the cafeteria and then we'll get the yearbook photo taken care of and stuff, if that's okay with you". Gosh, the girl really did speak fast. Sven blinked a few times to get adjusted to the speed while watching her lips to get what she was saying. Without thinking, Sven simply nodded quickly too, before she then left his side and towards the door before turning back around, "It was nice meeting you! welcome to Harlow!". Sven blinked again before raising his hand to wave, "Thanks".

It was all he could say since the girl left, leaving Sven to rub the back of his head to get the gist of what had just happened, and then realised that he'd just accepted meeting her at lunch. Wasn't that the time that those seniors were supposed to be onto him. Swinging his bag over his shoulder, he then mingled in with the other freshman, and then, taking the girls' approach, rushed to the next class, hoping he was going the right way, and whenever he saw seniors spot him, he'd enter the nearest classroom and ask for directions. By the time he was back out, the ghost was clear and he was off again.

He hoped that time would go slowly as it had in his first lesson, but unfortunately for him, the lunchbell sounded, and it was time to go outside. He wasn't sure where Nicki would be since girls had their own PE lessons from the boys, so he told Jamie where he'd be and to meet them after he got the yearbook photo sorted, which Jamie told him that he had one too, before heading to the front of the cafeteria, looking around for Sherry, and hoping and praying he wouldn't be preyed upon while he was alone...

English class went amazing for Sherry (as she was considered the teacher's pet) and PE went even better, as Sherry got good grades on her quiz. Although, nothing exited Sherry more than getting to meet Sven during lunch.

She quickly put everything into her locker, grabbed her small Canon digital camera, and quickly walked to the front of the cafeteria, making sure to stay on the sides of the hallway so the seniors wouldn't see her.

Sure enough, the green haired boy was there, looking around the room.

"Heyyyyy, glad ya made it!" she said, turning her red camera on. She tapped it, waiting for it to turn to the normal screen.
Once it got set up, Sherry slowly pointed it at Sven, and backed up from him so she could get his whole face in the shot. She quickly fiddled with the buttons, setting it into focus. There was something telling her that she needed to tell Sven that she wasn't in yearbook club, but she figured he would find out soon enough.

"Alrighty, here we go." she said, and pressed the button on the top of the camera. She looked at the picture afterwards, and smiled as she saw that it came out just as she wanted it to.
"It's perfect!" she said, a natural grin appearing on her face. She put the camera away in her blazer pocket, and grabbed her lunch money from the other pocket.
"How's first day treating ya?" she asked Sven. "I'm assuming you've figured out the whole game thing already. Has your brother explained it to you?"

With everything that had happened earlier, Sven was a little on-edge than what he normally would be. It was lunchtime, which meant he had to watch out for seniors. When it was class time, he was alright as he was with people his own edge and could use his lost tactic, but he couldn't use such a tactic now. He was now a target, standing still, and clearly seen with a peach shirt and green hair. He mightswell just have a target painted on him with how bright and vulnerable he was.

Sven debated whether to stay put and wait for her, or move and be less conspiculous. It was then that he heard her approach, "Heyyyyy, glad ya made it!", turning to face her, thankful she didn't speak at 30 miles per hour as she had before, as a red camera revealed itself, "Alrighty, here we go", as Sven smiled with his hand behind his head, still wondering why. Afterall, wasn't it a bit early to take pictures for the yearbook, then again, there was always the before and after thing that they might be doing. He must of took a good photo, as she grinned, "It's perfect!". Well, least that's one person happy today.

"How's first day treating ya? I'm assuming you've figured out the whole game thing already. Has your brother explained it to you?". There it was again, his brother, as he sighed, before responding, "So far, I guess it's going alright, though I still think the whole game thing is wrong. Already had seniors come to me, Johnson she was called and a guy named Richard, came first thing, and as for my brother, he don't tell me anything except not to mess things up, so....yeah....", he smiled.

Already had seniors come to me, Johnson she was called and a guy named Richard, came first thing, and as for my brother, he don't tell me anything except not to mess things up, so....yeah...." Sven said. Although it was wrong, Sherry was happy she didn't have an older brother.
"Oh" she said. Sherry's tone of voice seemed more real, as if she was being more down to earth and less bubbly. "yeah. you have to watch out for them. I think it's wrong too...i mean, kids have taken it way too far. Just be careful, and don't let them get the best of you. Though then again, if somebody offered me a really easy dare, i'd probably do it" she said, joking. Of course, that would never be the case, but then again, Sherry wondered if it was possible.
"Alright, well, i gotta eat lunch. If you need any help or anything, just ask me. Also, if you need a place to sit or something, you can come by me. I'm gonna be alone today....freaking chess club...." Sherry started to walk away. "Thanks again. I'll see you later" she said, heading over to where the lunch was served. She bought her lunch, and then headed over to an empty spot in the cafeteria. She sat, hoping that none of the upperclassmen would corner her. Of course, that was not the case, and she could see some kids eyeing her up. They didn't come near her, but Sherry had a feeling they would. She quickly started to make game plans in her head if they did. It's hard being by yourself in the cafeteria. You become an easier target.

"Hey." The upperclassmen didn't break their promises, and they wouldn't back out from their challenges. A tanned skin boy with dreads had spotted Sven and Nicki, and took his time with approaching them. Richard was without Johnson this time, but he didn't need her to complete his task, and she would stay in the background until the game heated up. He walked up to the green haired freshmen, holding an air of confidence and hostility around him.

His face was sharp, well defined. With thin, arched eyebrows and narrow eyes he truly looked like some kind of predator, as if the wrong move would cause him to snap and attack. "You two didn't think you were getting out of this, were you?" A smirk crossed his face as he wrapped an arm around the the two freshman's shoulders. "Walk with me kid, talk with me. Richard pulled the two along, but didn't properly looking at them, acting as if he was a speck of dust rather than another human being.

This wasn't the end of it, oh no, there were big plans for today. A senior with long blonde hair took a seat across from none other than Sherry Villewski. Julia McClair wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but she was brutal, and the grin on her face backed that up. "Hello hello, chess girl." She giggled, as if that was the funniest burn in the world. "Oh," She leaned forward, frowning. "You look so lonely! Why, let me keep you company, it's the least I can do, as your elder!" The young woman giggled and sent her a wink, her legs crossing under the table.

"I want to play a game, Sher." Her arm traveled across the table, gently resting on the younger girl's forearm. "I can call you Sher, right? Anyways," Her grip suddenly tightened. For such a skinny lady, most wouldn't guess that she had such a strong hand. Her head tilted to the side, swaying much like a snake, though there wasn't much going on in that head of hers. "Won't you play with me?" Julia's voice was sickeningly sweet, almost whiny and pleading, but once she got the chance she would snap the trap shut - the freshmen would be entangled in her barbaric game in one fatal movement.

"Oh..yeah. you have to watch out for them. I think it's wrong too...i mean, kids have taken it way too far. Just be careful, and don't let them get the best of you. Though then again, if somebody offered me a really easy dare, i'd probably do it", was Sherry's consolance, which was nice. He wasn't the only one that thought it wrong, and least she had offered more help than his brother. All Devin had said was advice that wasn't really advice. Don't mess up he says, don't make me look bad he says, don't let people know I'm your brother he says. Devin really aggravated in sometimes, and already he was getting to him, since he was the one messing it for him.

When he first spoke with her, he wondered what strange girl she was since she poke at 30 miles per hour, but without the rush to class, she seemed very kind and very friendly. He didn't understand why the older ones did it, but from what Pierce had said earlier, the teachers don't interfere even if they know. All they had to hope was that from his year and Pierce's year, this thing can stop, but from the sounds of it, how Nicki's sisters spoke of this dare thing, it seemed to of been happening for a long time, and then those who were once targetted preys on others. For Sven, it was wrong, but it made him wonder how the seniors now were back when they were freshman. Maybe he'd be open about it and ask one.

"Alright, thanks!", he answered with a smile and a wave as Sherry left to get her lunch before Nicki approached, "Hey Sven!", which made his smile widen as he approached her, "Hiya Nicki! All go well?", seeing as last lesson they were divided. It seemed there was no sign of Jamie. He only hoped he was alright, since so far, they had done well. All he had to do now was have lunch, sit down, relax. Something that would have to wait, as he felt an arm round him, "You two didn't think you were getting out of this, were you?...Walk with me kid, talk with me".

It seemed it was just him rather than the other girl. At least it was only one, and maybe once they were out and he got on their nerves, maybe he and Nicki can show him something called respect. However, something bugged him into doing it, which was the fact that he rarely thought, being more of the friendly and open type, rather than bold, brash and feisty like other lads. If only he had some muscle and was strong like his brother...maybe that's why he was picked on more than the other freshman males, or the fact he was new, or that he had his wonderful green hair which resulted in being more of a curse than a joy. What joy!

"I don't know the rules sorry", he heard Nicki say. Sven looked to her and saw how red she was, so Sven thought about what Sherry said, to not let them get the best of him. "Getting out of it? Wouldn't dream of it, but couldn't you let us go a little? let us chill, and tell us about this game you spoke of, cos I don't get it, and we can't exactly run away with you beside us, and besides, I don't see why we should, seeing as your the coolest guy I've met so far". Will it work? Will it work? he kept asking himself, as he applied what people saw as his weakness, as his strength, so at least they would both be able to breathe, and Nicki would be ok.

Julia winced, covering her ears childishly when Sherry shouted. The girl frowned, listening to what she said, and her expression started to brighten, if ever so smugly. It faltered though, when Sherry, insinuated that her hair was a mess. Her hand reached upwards and patted it down, before running her fingers through it. That wasn't enough though, not for her, and the vain girl soon stood from her seat.

"I need to freshen up then." She paused, studying Sherry for a moment, and then spoke again. "I'll be right back, don't try anything funny, okay?" A smile crossed her lips once again and she leaned closer. "If you try and run away, you'll make me angry. And if you make me angry, your life will turn so terrible that you'll try killing yourself." She stood back up straight, away from Sherry, her expression pondering. "Like that boy last year...what was his name..Ben?" Her hands folded in front of her. "Before he tried to kill himself, he made me very, very angry. So be good." Julia giggled and took a few steps back. "Be right back." Her final tone was nearly sing-song, and she soon walked out of the cafeteria, and towards the washroom to fix her appearance.

---

Richard sighed and rolled his eyes, making his hold on the two freshmen tighter. "You two talk to much. The boy smirked and turned a corner, an empty hallway, except for a small group of seniors standing there, waiting for them. "I'm going to enjoy making the two of you shut up." He grinned and pushed them forward, forcing them to move closer to the group, who was eying them with excitement, like they were barely able to contain themselves and wait any longer.

A girl walked up to them first, her hair short, but her body long. "Look at what we have here!" She smiled and poked Nicki on the side, before grabbing onto her cheeks. "I think I like this one. What should I make you do, honey?" Her voice was motherly, but it was clear that she didn't want anything else to do but make their lives a living hell. Richard only pushed her away, before facing the two again. The mystery girl pouted and crossed her arms, but made no attempt to defy him, and it was soon made clear that he was their ringleader.

"Okay, listen up. Our game is simple. We give you a dare, if you don't complete it, you're given a humiliation." He leaned forward, his eyes narrowed. "And you don't have to agree to anything, it's do, or don't. The consequence is out of your control, don't think you can avoid it." Richard stuffed his hands into his pockets, smiling now. "If you refuse our dares, something even worse than a humiliation will be given to you. Your locker will be marked with red, and the whole school will know to target you. And they will." He looked over to a boy, who was bulky, clearing a man that played a sport. "Oliver, Karen, tell them what happened to you when you refused the dares of seniors."

The boy looked over to the freshmen, his eyes cold, stoney. Despite all of them facing the same treatment they were only dishing it out again, it was an endless cycle. "The first day I was jumped, they took my wallet, my phone, and I had two broken ribs." He said, and a bookish looking girl spoke up next. "They pelted me with rotten eggs for a week straight." She glared. "That wasn't the end of it." The boy nodded. "The school won't stop until you either crack, or accept the dare. That's how things work around here."

Richard chuckled and faced Sven and Nicki once more. "So you do have a choice, I guess. But it's either that until you leave our school, or play our game." The others nodded, and he went on. "Though, if you do well, you'll be rewarded. Popularity, the more you win, the more we'll recognize you. Eventually you'll be left alone, and you'll be a big dog. Fail, and you'll be at the bottom for the rest of your time here. It doesn't matter to us where you come from, or who you are, what you do. Only winners get respect around here." His hand reached over and ruffled Sven's hair. "So if you think about it, we're actually being generous. Most schools won't give unfortunate people a chance." His hand lowered, and he looked at them, now as excited as the rest of them.

"So, are you ready to play our game?"

Sherry breathed a sigh of relief, relieved that her plan worked. However, it came with a consequence. Julia had threatened to make Sherry's life pure hell if she fled from the cafeteria. When she thought about the game, Sherry realized that it would be better to play the game and lose then retreat. After all, the worst thing that could happen would be sinking to the bottom of the food chain. If that meant no more seniors constantly preying upon Sherry, she was more than glad to accept her fate. After all, Sherry's friends were at chess club. They didn't have to know ANYTHING

Thinking about what Julia would pick as a dare, Sherry decided to look over at what Nicki and Sven were doing. Maybe their dares would be the same, and Sherry would have an edge against Julia. Then again, Sherry could also see what the "mastermind" senior kids came up with for dares. Julia's dare would be like a test, and Sven and Nicki would be like a study guide. As she watched from a distance, she hoped her classmates' dares wouldn't be too wicked.

The best way, often times than not, was to not be yourself. When your general manner lured you into icy waters, then it was often required to adapt to the circumstances in order to be able to get off the shaky ice and not fall in. The little pep talk he had with Sherry helped, and his own experience with Devin to say "yes" when he really meant "no". Reverse Psychology, and desperately hoping it worked, as Nicki smiled, "Hey that is a good idea maybe I can learn by watching someone else". It was like in class, you learnt better by seeing it done rather than pushing straight into it. Afterall, it was his first day. Geeezz.

"You two talk to much...I'm going to enjoy making the two of you shut up", as Sven's eyes looked up and see Richard smirk. Well, his charming didn't work afterall. Then again, it didn't seem so bad until more seniors were in sights and then a girl coming over to fuss over Nicki. Now they were in tigers den and all of the tigers waiting to pounce on their prey. Thankfully, Richard had pushed her away and then explained the rules and about what happens if they refused. Least he had abided by that part of his request and not jumping straight into it, but the answers were not so pleasing. Surely the teachers would notice this mark, couldn't they enquire and then just keep that particular student safe-r for not playing the game. Seems it was just a case of looking after oneself where others do not.

Richard seemed amused and said they kinda had a choice, which they really didn't, and if Sven didn't accept, he'd not only have grief from home, but also at school. Then again, who knows what the dares would be, and when they were over, he'd be popular and the year after and the year after next would go smoother. Guess it could work out, though the question was what he would have to do. "Sure I am", Nicki said almost instantaneously. "I'm in", looking up and straight as possible with a smile. Was kinda hard with how Richard was holding them both, but if all went well, he wouldn't have to worry about all this anymore....what was he really getting himself into......

Julia returned to the cafeteria with a smile on her face, a bounce in her steps. Her make-up was reapplied, her mascara elongating her eyelashes, the smoky effect of her eyeshadow and eyeliner being reintroduced and there was a warm red color added to her lips. The girl's blonde hair had been fixed, brushed and sprayed to hold it in place, a large butterfly hair clip that matched the blue of eyes being placed at the left side. The senior radiated confidence, in the most shallowest of forms. There was no doubt that she was beautiful, but the way she held herself, her posture and approach was without the grace of a dainty princess. She walked back towards Sherry like a commander of an army, controlled with hostility bubbling underneath.

"I'm ready for my picture now." Her voice was light, sing-song and pleased. This time Julia didn't sit, and remained standing, idly fixing her low cut spaghetti strap dress and loose gray cardigan. She hummed, tilting her head to her side as she studied Sherry. "You're not so bad, sweetheart." The young woman smiled, placing her hands together. "I think I'll go easy on you! How about you TP the vice principles house. She's such a bitch. Come on, you should thank me, that will be fun!" She giggled. "Well, it's not like you can say no, they'll come after you if you do. Just have it done by Monday, okay? Now, lets get a move on, our break won't last forever."

---

Richard broke into a grin, an expression that could easily be seen as sadistic. "Very good, I'm glad to hear that." The others looked just as pleased, if not more so. He crossed his arms and looked over to the two underclassmen, thinking of what dares they should be blessed with first thing. His gaze met Nicki, a thought soon coming to mind, and his hands moved to be buried in his pockets. "You." He smiled and took a few steps closer towards her.

"You're a bold one, aren't you?" He chuckled before going on. "I would like to see you prove that, show us that you're not all talk." The other seniors seemed to agree, some making comments and others nodding, but they all watched with the same excitement in their eyes. "We're running low on cigarettes, so why don't you get us some." He held up his hand, sticking up three fingers. "Three packs. I don't care how you get it, but I expect it to be done by let's say..." He glanced at the group, some sending him shoats of 'in two days', 'by the end of the week' and even 'tomorrow'. Richard chuckled and nodded, facing Nicki once again. "You heard them, tomorrow. I dare you, so don't mess up."

His focus switched over to the boy, Sven, studying him for a moment before giving him his own sentence. "You know, Hayes has been really irritating me lately." He yawned and stretched, walking over. "You kind of irritate me too." By now his smile was gone, and there was tension hanging in the air. "I want you to try and become 'friends' with him. Kind of like our own little spy, figure out what's going on in that head of his." The peanut gallery laughed and he waved a hand in the air to shush them. "And then I want you to tell me all about him. Don't worry, your brother will give me your phone number." He smiled at the end of the sentence, expecting that him mentioning Sven's sibling would bother him. "I dare you. This starts now. For the next few weeks, you'll be my little dog. And if we're lucky, we'll see Pierce oh so heartbroken when he finds out his little freshmen pal betrayed him." Richard took a few paces backwards, wearing the same wicked expression. "It really is perfect that he already 'saved' you fish earlier, he won't suspect a thing." The man's eyes narrowed. "You cannot tell him a thing about this dare, nothing at all, or else they'll be..sever consequences. Trust me, we will know if you did."

Richard grinned again, and the others made comments of approval. "So you two understand, right?" His grin faltered into a smirk. "Then hurry up and beat it, get out of my sight until you have done what I had asked."

He couldn't go back now. Once he had said he was in, that was it. Well, he could change his mind but then he'd be known as a quitter and also get the same treatment as the other lad had said. Besides, since it was their first day, they had to start easy surely. Afterall, though these dares were supposed to test their limits and see if they could push themselves to do it, so surely they would start low and then work way upto the top, as with competitions like this, you only go up, not down. Sven dearly hoped that it was something easy for the first day so he could get it over and done with and then have a good night sleep at the end and prepare himself for the next one.

As he looked to Nicki and saw her smile at him, he had no idea where her confidence was coming from. How on earth could see be all cool about it? She was probably thinking the same as him, to get it out the way and once they had passed, they didn't have to deal with them anymore. However, she seemed alot more confident and ready to get going and what Sven needed was his lunch as his belly rumbled inside. He hadn't ate anything since breakfast. "So now we're both in can I eat my lunch because quite frankly I am starving". You and me both, he said to himself trying to be as confident as Nicki as she played with her hair but he couldn't do that. It was a girl thing, but wasn't the girls most vulnerable in challenges like this. Then again, this whole system was wrong so anything could be possible. It would be hard no doubt but once they done it, they were in the clear and they could move on.

Sven was looking forward to his music lesson so he could get his saxophone out, but thinking about it, if students had to vote people for who to play in a play for example....they'd want someone with guts wouldn't they? He could not bail out, and he could not fail or his whole time here and everything he did was at stake. How Harlow gets good reputation for its results yet has this is beyond explanation...he could move school but then he'd be in a bad school and it'll be too far away, not to mention torture at home as well with his brother if he became a quitter. He had to do it, and as he thought on it, he heard Richard approach Nicki, [i]"You...You're a bold one, aren't you?"
. Sven's eyes looked to her, hoping he wouldn't try anything or give her something to disgrace her, as since their meeting, he'd say that he respected her. Infact that's an understatement, he admired her for her courage and standing up to these guys yet there he was wanting to run away but his shoes were gluued to the ground.

"We're running low on cigarettes, so why don't you get us some...tomorrow", he told her. Well, the deadline was a little challenging but all in all, it didn't seem so bad. If Nicki shown great courage like she did and got something like that, surely he'd have something even easier than that to see if he had a bone of courage on him before working his way up. He'll be alright, he can do this, as he kept reassuring himself, but the way he yawned with his smile gone and saying how he irritated him, made all his confidence build-up drop, before he quickly picked it up again like dropping his towel from swimming. He disliked being the target and despite agreeing to the game and with everyone being happy, they could at least be nice to him...surely....?

"Hayes....I want you to try and become 'friends' with him. Kind of like our own little spy, figure out what's going on in that head of his", as a chorus of laughter erupted and ended as quick as it started. Sometimes Sven was too honest and kind for his own good, but this, why this? Something else please, he cried inside yet on the outside, he took a leaf out of Nicki's book to hold himself together and keeping a straight face and nodding occassionally, but not confident one bit. "And then I want you to tell me all about him. Don't worry, your brother will give me your phone number", as he smiled at the end but Sven didn't. With his brother mentioned, he now knew he had to do it, cos if he didn't, he'd get treated badly at college and at home as well. Why me?! he asked. Not that he wanted Nicki to have the job but he was expecting something easier and straight to the point, not something as dishonest as this.

"I dare you. This starts now. For the next few weeks, you'll be my little dog. And if we're lucky, we'll see Pierce oh so heartbroken when he finds out his little freshmen pal betrayed him...", he missed the next bit as Richard stepped back, arrogant toad. Oh the words couldn't reach him, but if there was one thing he hated, it was hurting other people. Inside, one part of him kept saying "you can't do this", but then another side which kept going on and on and go in an annoying tone was "you got to do this, you got to do this", but he completely didn't feel like it. "You cannot tell him a thing about this dare, nothing at all, or else they'll be..severe consequences. Trust me, we will know if you did". Of course they would, they were the biggest bullies in the school and just a little beating or teasing could get anyone to talk. He just wanted to get out of there.

Thankfully, his desire is what he wanted to, "So you two understand, right? Then hurry up and beat it, get out of my sight until you have done what I had asked", as Sven gave a sharp nod and walked calmly till he was round the corner before running quicker than molasses, but before he could, he felt himself being pulled towards a wall before hearing a familiar voice, "So Sven, you have your first task", as Devin looked straight into his eyes and his face all serious as his hands held Sven into place on the wall, "You be sure to pass it with flying colours. In this college, your on your own. Like I said, welcome...to...Hell. One person is your friend for one moment and the next your enemy. Mess it up..." as he leaned forward, "You know what you get", before pushing him back into the wall and walking off.

Sven simply couldn't win, he was too weak as he slumped to the floor. He had lost his apetite and barely felt like eating. He wanted to run, but where? He had no-one and now was told to do something that went against his morals that he has lived by all his life. If he kept all Devin's don't trust no-one and stick up for yourself attitude, he'll just turn into a creep like him. Why couldn't he have a caring elder brother who can be playful and stick up for him? and an even better question, why did he even get himself messed up in all this in the first place? His mind simply could not comprehend at this point since all was jumbled. The only good noise was what Richard had said about not seeing their face till they completed their task, which for him was a few weeks which means no dares or whatnot while he already had this one, a task he totally detested.

Why me......

Lunch was more than halfway over and Pierce was alone, Ashlin and Micheal left him to go to class early, apparently the seniors had to go tape together the project for their shared literature class and left in a hurry. He ended up finishing his lunch and wandering down an empty hallway nearby, it's white walls nearly blinding and tile too harsh against the bottom of his shoes. The junior was headed towards an area outside of the school that was rarely checked on - let alone known about, so it was a good place to smoke.

The boy was starting to crave a cigarette, partially because of his addiction, and partially because of the walls around him. He wasn't too fond of school, though it was better than being on his own most of the day. It wasn't always so tolerable though, the air hung around him like deadweight, bringing his spirit and mood down. Even the walls of the building seemed to dig under his skin and irritate him, at times it was comforting to be in a place where he had some friends, and at others it was like being in a prison. Right now he was feeling as if it was the latte. The school itself could make him nauseous, but the people in it had an even worse effect.

Devin Amilio passed him in the hall, yet Pierce payed him no mind, not even looking in his direction. It was people like that who made him stomach feel sick more than anyone else. It wasn't how they played with others like they were toys and would cast them aside when they were no longer any fun, he did the same thing. They did this in different ways, them through bullying and him through brief adventures, though he wouldn't call himself any better. No, it was how they derived sick pleasure from the despair of others, and how they liked watching people dance for them, even if they were putting themselves or others in danger.

There was that girl who had to drive while blindfolded, or that boy who had to walk across the edge of a building while it was icy. Even if both finished the tasks without injury it could have been to easy for something to go wrong. That's what turned him ill. This environment was suffocating, and the juniors weren't any better, he could see how they were just as excited as their elders to join in on the fun the following year, like it was some sick tradition they couldn't help themselves from carrying on. Pierce didn't understand it at all. What was so great about causing pain to others? He didn't want to understand what they got out of it, not now, not ever.

Pierce turned the next corner, soon spotting one of the freshmen from earlier. The one with green hair, had he caught his name? The other boy was against a wall and looked a bit distraught. His mind soon wandered back to Devin, who truly was a snake, and he wondered if that particular senior was behind the freshman's unsettled expression. A flash of anger shot through him and his body tensed, and he struggled to keep his composure. That guy really pissed him off, even the sight of him could turn his mood sour. He wanted to demand to know what happened, but prevented himself from acting so rashly. It's not like he really knew anything at the moment, and he shouldn't go jumping to conclusions, even if Devin Amilio was an irritating, vile rat.

So he approached the kid instead of exploding, trying to ignore the negative energy around him. The boy must of had a rough first day, a lot of the people in his position did. "Hey." He greeted, stopping a few paces away from the green haired boy, which was a sight to see in itself. Pierce gestured down the hall with his head. "I was about to get some air. You want to come with?" His words were casual, but his tone was slightly strained thanks to the atmosphere. The younger boy looked like he needed to get out a bit, and Pierce knew that he himself needed to but out in the open for the sake of his sanity, if not just for a short while. That is, unless he decided to skip, he wasn't a person to think so far ahead.

He had a few weeks to get close to Pierce, the kindest guy he had met since coming into Harlow High and helped him, Nicki and Jamie get out a spot of bother with this Johnson. Now he was expected to be friendly with him which was not a problem since Sven was a friendly guy, but to feed out what secrets he had and to pass them to those guys who could then attack Pierce. He didn't like the idea at all, and despite the only positive being a few weeks away from them all, he'd be expected to deliver along with pressure each day from his brother to ensure he is doing his told.

Sven always did his told, but going against what he felt was wrong was not something he felt comfortable with. Why couldn't he have one of those elder brothers who protected him, why couldn't his brother be someone like Pierce who would come to his aid when he needed it, instead of pushing him into a wall and saying or doing what he liked. Sometimes he wished he was stronger, that he could defend himself, but if he didn't go through with these darings, he'd end up having a real hard time at school and not to mention home. The thought of it made him puke inside, and even considered puking up right now against the school's whitewash walls to add a bit of colour and show how he felt. It really disgusted him.

Nicki on the other hand had cigarettes to buy by tomorrow. With her being the more confident one, he would of thought they would of been nice to her and gave her something a little longer and little harder to see if she would do it. Then again getting cigarettes itself had it's risks, but surely something in a day to see if someone that was not really upto it was really into it or just a craven, would of been more for Sven. Though he weren't complaining about that. He thought it'll just be simply things like painting something on a teachers' car or something. As he rushed away, Nicki grabbed his hand with her long nails and let go as she realised what happened, "Oops sorry". He managed a smile, "It's alright, looks like we can get some food now. Catch you later", seeing as he was not after the canteen, but instead of getting some space, Devin had paid a visit. Despite where he had hurt him as he sat slumped on the floor, he felt where Nicki's nails had digged in, wishing that he could have some sort of defence when being faced with all this than being so useless.

Just then, he heard a familiar voice, "Hey", as Sven turned, only to see the guy he was told to betray and since he felt so ashamed he looked down thinking what to do. Pierce would probably think it would have to do with the seniors which was partly true, but what he didn't like the most was the task he had to do. "I was about to get some air. You want to come with?", he heard him ask. With his parents out and his brother in charge, he had no one to run and cry to and just then, with how kind Pierce was being, he felt like doing to him, but he couldn't. He wasn't family, he was a stranger and all they knew about each other was their names, except Sven kept his surname out the picture. Though thinking about it, maybe if he proclaimed he was related to Devin and acted more tough like him, he might get easier and not so morally wrong tasks to do.

Despite it all, he couldn't be on his own all day and he could use the company as he smiled, "coming!", he replied as he pulled out a tissue from his pocket to wipe the tears that had formed in the corners of his eye. Afterall, boys don't cry right? That's what Devin tells him. Once he was happy that he didn't look too bad, he rushed towards him since walking made Pierce wait longer. When he reached him he smiled, "Thank you", following him as he led him outside to get some air which he could really use right now.

There had been tears at his eyes, but Pierce didn't feel like it would do any good to point them out. He was sure it was better to find a way to get away from what caused such pain in the first place, discussing things didn't do much good. "It's no problem." Actions were all that mattered in this word, just talking about it didn't get anyone anywhere. He nodded, his lips pulling into a small smile as he lead the way outside, holding the door open for the other boy as the two exited the stuffy building. Inside was a home to twisted demons wearing the skins of humans, and out here there was a light breeze and clouds that covered the sun, allowing only small beams of light to be reflected off the puddles still on the ground from last nights rain. There was the noise of cars nearby and the buzz of the city around them was far from serene; even so he felt his soul grow calmer as he leaned against the wall of the building, allowing the world around him wash over his mind and cool the embers within him.

Pierce took a cigarette from out of his pocket and lit it with a simple blue lighter, pocketing the pack and fire making device soon after. He inhaled the smoke before holding the item between his fingers, exhaling the dark clouds from his lungs into the air above. "Though this be madness, yet there is method in't." He quoted Hamlet, a reading assignment he had enjoyed thanks to his fondness of poetry, referencing the seniors in the school. Though there may be those that acted as vicious wolves, the ones that controlled those animals weren't without intelligence and existed far from being simply crazed teenagers. People like Renee and Richard plotted behind the scenes to make sure everything came together in a perfect, gruesome painting that would suit their insidious, deceitful wishes.

It was disturbing, to say the least. He took another breath of tobacco into his body, pupils shrinking as he studied the sky above. Pierce's shoulders relaxed the more he studied the aerosols, the shapes the droplets of water gave him a sense of artistic beauty. They floated where they pleased, until they fell to the ground, only to dissipate and gather once more in the air. The boy's eyelids closed for a moment, candidly enjoying the moment; The soothing effect of the cigarette, the touch of the swirling cool air, the noise of the birds and the thoughts of hanging far above the ground, caught in an endless, beautiful cycle. Pierce opened his eyes again and rolled his shoulders, flicking ashes onto the ground below. He didn't want to go to class anymore. Why listen to a curriculum when he could discover and think on his own? Letters on a report meant nothing to him, memories and emotions held such greater value than money and material objects.

He looked over to Sven, perhaps he didn't take it into account if the boy was able to enjoy the silence. Pierce wasn't one to adapt, he pulled people along for a ride of spontaneity. If they enjoyed that, they could stay. Although, they couldn't stand by him for long, because soon even eccentric people wished to slow down, as they would grow weary of such an unstable lifestyle. "Do you want to go someplace with me?" He asked, making sure to study his reaction. Body language, expression, they were both important to take notice of. It's been awhile since he gained a new companion to share adventures with, he had been hanging around the band too often lately. They were official friends of his, but they didn't live like him, nor did they completely understand how the gears of his mind turned. However, they did acknowledge that they couldn't tie down a fire, and had gotten used to his erratic behavior.

A smile returned to his face, the look on his face being relaxed, carefree, covering the feeling of restlessness. "If you don't mind skipping class, that is." He put his cigarette out on the wall behind him, walking a few paces to toss the remainder of the cylinder shaped item in the trash can nearby. Pierce wasn't the type to force people to do anything, they could leave or refuse whenever they pleased. He didn't like chains on himself, so he wouldn't try putting them on others. The boy with long limbs and blue eyes that lived up to his name turned back around, looking at Sven while he waited for an answer as thoughts arose in his mind. There were billions of places to visit, the vast majority yet to be explored, and only a limited handful within his reach. Finding them on his own worked just fine, but company often made the journey more enjoyable, no matter how brief said venture lasted.

After all that had occurred, the walk had indeed eased his mind. As he walked, he attempted to clear his mind, at least temporarily, of the seniors who had started in the morning and then being pulled along the corridors and the task that he was assigned. What right did they have to order something that went against a person's morality? Probably would of been wise to ask what sort of tasks others had done, though maybe the best ones to ask was the juniors like Pierce as the seniors would only twist his request and see him as asking for more which was not his intention. Since he had nodded and agreed to go ahead with the game that meant life or death while at Harlow High, there was nothing he could do now except prove himself, pass all their tests and then finally be left alone by them. He definitely didn't see him doing something like what they had to new freshmen when he was of age.

One part of him wanted this first year to be over quickly so he could walk into school without worrying about anything, but as much as he wanted the year to pass, there was alot of work to do this year to help him next year so he'd have to continue on, press on, with such worrying thoughts in his head. He looked up as he saw Pierce leaning against the wall after having a cigarette with his eyes closed. How could he be at peace with everything around them? Maybe it was something to do with his smoking, but smoking was bad weren't it? then again, so was what the seniors were doing, but at least the smoke wouldn't question his morality.

Now wasn't the time to think of all that however as a light breeze passed through him, as if taking his burden off his shoulders and looking up to Pierce who faced him, "Do you want to go someplace with me?". Well, that was out of the blue. First day, and already he had somebody who wanted to take him out, somebody older aswell who had defended him before, as well as guiding them to their first lesson like armed security. He had been so kind to him and now the dare was to do something horrible back. What was he supposed to do....enjoy his time of course! He didn't enjoy what he had to do, but what he could enjoy was the time away from the bullies.

"If you don't mind skipping class, that is", Pierce added a smile which in itself helped him relax, as he felt safe round him. One wouldn't hurt and with his state of mind, he wouldn't be able to concentrate, as he nodded, "I don't mind" as a smile grew on his face. Sven then moved to his side before looking upto him, "So where we going?", he asked curiously.....

Pierce had placed his hand on his chin at the question, mocking a stroking motion often found in bad gangster movies and cartoons. "Where?" He acted as if he was pondering for a moment before smiling. "Anywhere we want to go." He had driven across the country before, just on a whim. However, that wasn't what he had in mind for today, the coast would always be there. He missed the ocean, but there was always next time. He began walking backwards away from the school and towards a path not far away, leading towards an array of buildings. As always, the staff was ever so unobservant. They didn't care what the students did so long as it didn't draw unnecessary attention to the school and they maintained decent test scores. Surprisingly enough, both of those were achieved, and the teachers continued to half ass their jobs. That was the law of their world, and while it had many drawbacks, it did have it's benefits.

Or at least, it benefited him, and his truant habits. "Though, I have someplace in mind." Pierce turned around, leading the way between and around buildings. His mind landed on the location because of was close by at first, though soon he realized how much he missed coming here - it must of been a few weeks since his last visit. He doubted he'd be out of practice though, but if he was - that would just make it all that much more thrilling, right?

The city was filled with noise, like usual, and it was comforting to him. Knowing there were other people, living their own lives, it was nice to be reminded that he hadn't somehow woken up alone in this world. There were so many interesting people in this world, he looked forward to the chance at meeting them. There were always those that were less then pleasant though, he wouldn't back down from them when the time came. Even so, it made him feel better to put distance between him and the school where hyenas and jackals preyed on the weak - or would it be more fitting to call them vultures? The atmosphere still seemed off to him; they were planning something big this year, and he had a bad feeling he would be dragged into it all over again.

Well, better him, then someone else.

The young man stopped outside the door of what looked to be a large, abandoned building. It's bricks were losing its color and many windows were broken, it didn't look like it had been used in several years. In reality, it had only stopped being used about six months ago. Even so, Pierce knelt down and grabbed a key from under the mat, using it to unlock the back door with peeling red paint. The inside was a bit drafty from the windows, yet it wasn't too cold, having been well insulated. He reached over and flicked on the light switch, illuminating the red and gold colored hall for them, round light bulbs over head. At one time this place was a common venue, attracting many people with the several attractions it held. Now it was abandoned and bleak, holding onto a sliver of it's past glory. To Pierce, that just made it even more beautiful. It was lost and forgotten, and it still existed; peaceful, quiet.

Not bothering with words, Pierce simply lead the way down the hallway, his posture becoming more tense than relaxed from the anticipation. The hallway grew wider, larger, and he flicked on another series of light switches, bringing light into a large room up ahead. He didn't even attempt to hide his smile as he stepped out of the hall into a large circle, surrounded by rows and rows of seats. The building housed opera singers, bands, magicians and so on until it went out of business. He walked on, looking at the objects left behind from the last show. Chairs of bright colors, a trailer, platforms, cages, stilts - all suited for the circus that had used it last. They weren't only the last show to be put on here, fittingly it was their last performance as well.

"It's not much, but..." He stopped near a ladder leading up to a platform held several feet in the air, though not absurdly so. A tightrope was between two platforms, stretching for about twenty feet across the air. It was still sturdy and would hold, being good enough to be used. Below was a net to catch people, if they were to fall. Pierce turned around and faced Sven again. "Are you afraid of heights?" He questioned, before walking over to check the net, making sure it hadn't been tampered with by rascally children.

Sven remained by Pierce's side. Even if he had asked him where he was going, inside his mind he couldn't really mind as long as he was away from all the bullies and being harassed whenever he wanted a bit of fresh air, something that Pierce was offering. If the teachers couldn't be bothered to protect their students then why bother turning up to class. Blimey, he really was changing and it was only the first day. What had happened as he put his head down ashamed of himself for thinking such, even if he couldn't help it. Pierce was so relaxed and had an aura of a free spirit, which was confirmed when he said, "Anywhere we want to go". Far away from Devin would be nice, but he'd want to be with someone and not on his own, and as much as he admired Pierce, he seemed to be the guy who liked to be on the move and not be in a place too long. How on earth did he manage his freshman year? Maybe he'd ask him. However, it meant bringing back the school topic again.....

"Though, I have someplace in mind", he brought up, as he walked infront of him, causing Sven the need to catch up as they entered the busy city until they came to what looked like an old run-down building no longer in use. Pierce was approaching it and then grabbed the key and begun to open the lock. He wasn't thinking what he thought he was thinking. He wasn't going in there....yes he was, as the doors open. Was he sure about this, "Is it safe?", he asked looking around, but Pierce was inside so he took a gulp and rushed in as he entered a grand corridor with Pierce turning on the lights as if he owned the place. He could hardly walk without looking around and seeing all the sparkles. Why, lots of talented individuals must of walked down this same corridor. Could this be him someday?

Following Pierce, they entered the inner chamber with a multitude of seats encircled around a stage. A circus? surely it was used for music, but it seemed now that the old styles of music was going out and being replaced by all the rock and roll and stuff. He begun to wonder if any career in the music industry with his saxophone would be anything or not at all, to be run-down like this place. Now he was thinking too much, as Pierce was still up ahead and continued to move, "It's not much, but...", in which Sven shook his head, "No...it's amazing!", he commented as they went onto the stage with Sven turning round to face the what-would-be audience and spun round, only to see Pierce away from him again. Couldn't he stop still.

"Are you afraid of heights?", he asked him as he watched Pierce check the net which was used to catch anyone that fell. He was going do the tightrope wasn't he? Sven couldn't help himself but smile. Why couldn't he have a brother that could be as fun, in which case Sven responded honestly, "I don't know....Never been a position, to be afraid of heights, but I'm willing to give a go". The majority of his time was being afraid that he wouldn't succeed and be stuck with his brother. This was a first for him, and as Pierce seemed confidence, he decided to stick close to him. Why couldn't this of been the dare rather than dishonesty. He hated it, but this would show that he did have the guts to do wild things.....

It seemed like Sven was already beginning to become fond of this place, Pierce marked that down as a good thing. He enjoyed it here, inside it was quiet, but not silent. You could still hear the sounds from outside, though muffled, like being under water. This was one of the places where he felt free, but separated from others; it felt like the world around him didn't matter. Rules and regulations, they are vaporized from his mind whenever he walked on the tightrope, pretending he was only floating through air. Hardly anyone came here, and maybe only the people he had shown this place knew that it was more than an abandoned, yet not forgotten, building. Besides, he had found the key to the back door, and was sure to lock it up every time he left. That didn't mean people couldn't break in though, so it was best to be careful.

"I don't know....Never been a position, to be afraid of heights, but I'm willing to give a go." He smiled in return, good, it was always a lot better to share the experience with others. Pierce stopped beside the ladder and slid off his shoes, following that up by removing his socks and placing them inside them, setting the pair aside. The rope wasn't too rough, it was best to walk on it barefoot, especially for beginners. "Great." He stood up straight, ready to brief Sven of how to stay balanced, and how to fall. "The rope will go between your big toe, it'll help hold you in place. Be sure to walk slowly, one foot at a time. You'll want to hold out your arms too to keep yourself balanced."

His voice was laid back, not stern like that of an instructors. "The key is to stay relaxed, so if you think looking down will sketch you out, keep looking forward. Try not to panic, if you start tipping to the side just lean over towards the opposite, and you regain your balance." It wasn't that hard, people usually messed up because they were afraid of falling, but Pierce thought that took out a big part of tightrope walking. Falling was a possible outcome and was part of it, the threat of falling was a pierce of the experience. Tt wasn't something to fear, you just had to move with the rope and distribute your weight. "Don't be afraid of falling, it's not that bad. If you do, just be sure to not fall head or feet first." That wouldn't be good at all. The rope was strong and the holes were small, but falling that way would hurt.

The boy turned around and started climbing the ladder, looking upwards instead of down, and continued to talk. "If you really think you're going to fall, don't fight it, it'll just make it worse. Don't worry though, it doesn't hurt or anything." He paused and look downwards towards Sven, sending him what he hoped was a reassuring smile, before climbing the rest of the way up. He pulled himself up on the platform, walking to the edge and looking over, examining the area below. Most people would be unsettled by the height, which wasn't too high up, but he enjoyed looking down from high places. It simply was just more interesting this way, giving him a new point of view on the world around him. From the ground everything looked so big, and up high everything was so small.

Then he moved forward off the platform, walking onto the rope set in front of him. His shoulders were loose as he held his arms out to his sides, he exhaled, and then his breathing turned even and relaxed. It was both soothing and exciting, he continued to walk forward, eyes looking over the ground, the ceiling, even shutting momentarily. A small dose of adrenaline shot through him, but Pierce refused to become shaken, and a peaceful expression was marked on his face. Slowly, he turned around, only a couple of feet away from the platform, and looked towards Sven. "Are you going to join me?" He held out his hand, even if it was more symbolic, as the other was too far away to take it.

Sven would always be willing to try something new, within reason. Afterall, he had spent his entire life at the mercy of his older nasty brother Devin, and if anyone could put up with Devin for fifteen years, then he must be doing something right. Many times had he wondered what caused Devin to act in the way he does. Maybe his attitude would change towards him once he passed these dares that he continued to mock and bully him with. He also didn't seem bothered at the task he had to do. He gave no words of encouragement except the consequences if he messed up. Be bad towards those who are nice to you, and be nice and do what is asked of you by those that are bad to you. It didn't make any sense at all, nor did it feel right. He wished he was stronger.

Everytime he looked up at Pierce, he saw the aura of strength and confidence surrounding him. He wished he had the confidence he had and strength to do something about these dares, but he couldn't. He wouldn't of minded doing something bad that took only a few seconds, but getting close to somebody and then stabbing them in the back wasn't his way at all. He listened to Pierce's instructions about how to walk the tightrope, "the key is to stay relaxed" he told him. Sven continues to try and keep calm everyday but ends up losing it. His life was like a tightrope, "If you start tipping to the side just lean over towards the opposite, and you regain your balance", well, wasn't that what he was doing? Leaning towards one side and then leaning on the other side so he doesn't fall and get hurt.

"Don't be afraid of falling, it's not that bad. If you do, just be sure to not fall head or feet first....If you really think you're going to fall, don't fight it, it'll just make it worse. Don't worry though, it doesn't hurt or anything". If he fell from his tightrope, would it hurt. Instead of leaning to the side he didn't like to keep standing, if he stayed to the side he cared the most and held his ground and fell, would he be better off? Maybe self-defence lessons would help so if he fell, he could fight off those who tried to hurt him for not bending their way. He just didn't know anymore. He hadn't only to think about school, but how things at home with Devin will be also.

Stuff Devin! he yelled to himself, as he took off his shoes and socks and climbed up the ladder, watching Pierce cross. He performed the walk so exceptionally. He could manage to walk over without leaning heavily on either side. When he was finished, he turned round and held his hand out, "Are you going to join me?", he asked. Yes, yes! he told himself, I can do it!, but as soon as he put his first foot down with his big toe on the rope, he begun to falter. Stepping back, he then called back, "Gimme a minute", as he closed his eyes to clear his mind, He wasn't concentrating and that was the problem.

A picture laid out in his mind. Before him was a flowing river. The rope was the only way across. To fall would mean to drown, to stay would mean to be caught as he heard Devin shout with other seniors round him including Richard, and on the other side of the rope was Pierce who was telling him to come and join him. Immediately Sven lifted his foot on the rope with his big toe holding him into place, before lifting his other foot in the same way. His arms opened up like a plane, taking one step at a time. When he begun to tip, he used the force he used to move his other foot to lean him away, just how Pierce told him too as he came closer and closer to Pierce, with his hand in sight. If he moved quicker, he could reach his hand, pull himself over and then the tides would be over.

When he was training to play his saxophone and then playing in assembly, he usually got nervous, but what he was told, was to focus on something or someone and to ignore everything else. Doing exactly that, he ignored where he was and the little picture of his mind he had formed to help him across, and immediately moved forward towards him. Seeing his hand, he reached his own to hold his and rushed forward onto the platform, but in doing so, he lost his balance, so in order to stabilise himself, his other hand held Pierce's arm to straighten himself up. "Sorry", he said, apologising for gripping onto him like an anchor in a storm.

A smile crept onto his face as his head then turned to face the once-scary tightrope and laughed, "That was fun!", even if it took him and his mentality awhile, he had passed the obstacle, "Thank you!". He had certainly had his spirits lifted up. He hadn't laughed all day until now. Realising he still had his hand in his hand and his other hand still holding his arm, he then let go, now that he had regained his posture to see what Pierce thought of his display. If only life's tightrope would be the same way, but what he was lacking was that anchor to hold onto to prevent him from falling. Would he ever have an anchor? especially how these games work to hurt the ones you like, so even if you do pass, your left with no-one except the bullies. Was it even worth it?
