Introduction
On Earth, in the United States the world is going on much as it has for many long years. There are many different people living together, making up this country, and for the most part they all seem to get along. One of the most famous Punk Rock bands that are currently on top of the world is Pillar of Society. They are a small group that has four members. Most people of the world would do anything to meet these men. They currently are living in California, near or in Oxnard. Three of the members are already either dating someone or already married. The lead vocalist/guitarist, though, is completely single. He's just broken it off with his long term girlfriend whom he's had a child with. He's gotten into drugs and alcohol and is slowly spiraling downhill. He has not planned on meeting anyone new let alone someone normal, still quite broken up over his last girlfriend. He's lost interest in performing, forcing the band to take a indefinite break. What would happen if you met him? Would you fall in love with him, being able to see past all of his flaws? Could you handle his hateful ex-girlfriend who will still be in his life because of his daughter? Can you change his self harming habits and make him see that there is truly good in this world?

Jay, the bass player of Pillar of Society, pulled up into the driveway of Zayn's beautiful home. He'd been trying to get a hole of his best friend for about an hour. He was worried. He could remember a time that Zayn had not answered his phone. The man got out of his car and quickly made his way to the front door. It was locked. He knocked loudly upon the door for a minute. Zayn wasn't coming to open the door. He quickly began trying to break through the door. It took several tries before the door gave way, swinging open to allow the man to enter. He walked in quickly yelling out for his friend. There was no answer. He did hear, however, the television on in the living room. He made his way there quickly. What he saw, made his heart drop. Zayn was obviously passed out upon the couch. Zayn normally didn't drink nearly enough to make himself pass out. Jay quickly sat down beside of Zayn. Looking at his friend, he could see that Zayn's skin appeared paler than usual and he wasn't breathing normally. Jay tried waking his friend up but it wasn't working. Thinking quickly, he pulled out his cell and dialed 911. He was frantic by this point. He knew that something was terribly wrong with his friend. He spoke to the operator, telling them he needed help. They told him that they were sending an ambulance to the residence.
Jay waited for about ten minutes before he heard the siren. He didn't bother leaving Zayn's side, knowing that once the EMT's saw the broken door that they would enter. The next thing he knew, Zayn was being loaded up into the emergency vehicle. He quickly got in the back, texting the rest of the band telling them to meet him at the hospital. The ride seemed to take forever, each breath that Zayn took seemed to take longer to come about. Jay told the driver that he needed to call ahead to the hospital, to let them know who was coming. The driver only nodded and did as he was asked. He told the person on the other end that they needed to make sure that only those who would be working with Zayn or taking care of him were to know who he was. The pulled in and they were quickly getting the rockstar out of the vehicle. They made sure that he was covered so that the paparazzi wouldn't get any horrible pictures of him. They moved quickly, walking in. They took the two men into a large room where they would monitor Zayn. Zayn was placed upon the bed and a tube inserted into his throat, to help with his breathing. The doctor was yelling all around the room. Jay just stood by, confused. Where was the rest of the band? The doctor had Zayn's stomach pumped and an intravenous drip inserted. The doctor spoke to Jay, informing him that his friend would have to stay in the hospital for a couple of days until he was well again. Everyone seemed to file out of the room, closing the door. This left Jay in the room with Zayn. Why had he drank so much? He never did that. It was then that Brody, the drummer, and Cody, the guitarist, entered the room. The twins looked very worried. They sat with Jay, talking about what had happened. None of them knew what would have triggered such an act by their friend. Jay informed the two that a nurse was supposed to be coming by to check on Zayn every couple of hours. Hopefully they'd chosen someone that would keep his identity a secret from everyone else in the hospital. They didn't need a mob trying to get into the room while Zayn was trying to heal. Jay thought for a moment. He should probably call Sarah but then again, Zayn wouldn't want her there. Jay decided against it..at least until his friend woke up. Jay knew that it was only a matter of time until the media did find out, though he was going to try and postpone that for as long as possible.
“Oh, c’mon, Billy! Please!” The office lounge was mostly empty, with a nurse or doctor running in and out of it every now and again to grab a coffee or an energy bar. “I was supposed to get off four hours ago!” The female speaking was Amy Marshall, a nurse in the hospital. She was on her cell phone in a corner by the vending machine, whispering to her coworker who had the night off. “I have to check on him every twenty minutes, my feet hurt, my husband is bitching up a storm, you know how much he--” “Alright! Alright. Fine, I’ll come in. You owe me,” Billy’s voice sounded mildly amused with a hint of annoyance, but Billy couldn’t stay mad at anyone.
It took her all of twenty minutes to get there, and when she did she was surprised to see paparazzi crowding the halls of her workplace. “Excuse me, excuse me please, Ma’am, sorry.. MOVE” The frightened news crew blinked at her like curious owls as she forced her way through the throng of people. What the hell was going on in here? She went to the lounge where she found Amy, with dark rings under her eyes. “Okay, he’s in room 138, and for god’s sake, don’t tell anyone.” “Why?” “Just don’t, Billy! God! I have to get out of here, Tyson has been crying for an hour.” “Alright, alright. Give me his chart..” Amy went flying from the room, bursting her way through the crowd of reporters.
Billy thoughtfully looked over the man’s chart as she walked to his room. Mr. Spicer. What a weird name. Apparently he was brought in in critical condition. Alcohol poisoning. How charming. She pushed open the door to his room and slipped inside, still looking down at his chart as she began to speak. “Hello, Mr. Spicer, I’m Billy, I’ll be taking over for Miss Amy. She got called away. Is there anything I can get you to make you more comf-“ she glanced up from her chart and her words were stopped in her throat. Of course he was an alcohol poison case. She was surprised he wasn’t an OD. Resisting the urge to roll her eyes, she maintained her nursely attitude. “Comfortable.”
She looked over his body, he was in recovery now, in a hospital gown like most of her patients. Unlike the others, though, this particular one was covered in tattoos to mask his incredibly milky skin. Her blue hues looked him over, checking the machine by his bed side to make sure all his vitals were stable and normal. Billy was wearing a cow print pair of scrubs today, with white shoes. Her long golden hair was pulled up in a ponytail to keep it out of her way for work, and in case someone threw up on her. She shifted her weight to one side of her hip and held his chart closer to her as she looked him over.
“You know, as ironic as it is, today is a pretty okay day to end up in the hospital. Apparently, some celebrity is in here. There’s a throng of reporters outside. Maybe you’ll get put on TV if you get well enough to leave before they do.” She offered him a smile, to show that she was joking. “Just trying to make light conversation… but seriously, can I get you anything?” She was looking past his tattoos and his strange hair. Today, he was just another patient. Guys like him came in every day. Still, the idea of a celebrity being in the hospital was a little exciting, and she couldn’t help but wonder who it was.
As Zayn was lost in thought, staring off towards the far wall, the door to his room opened. He paid it no mind, thinking that perhaps it was one of the guys. “Hello, Mr. Spicer, I’m Billy, I’ll be taking over for Miss Amy. She got called away. Is there anything I can get you to make you more comf-“ said a female voice. “Comfortable.” Zayn quickly turned his chocolate eyes upon the female. She was quite pretty, Zayn thought as he eyed the girl. He watched as she went about her job. Had they not told her who he was? That was strange. He was sure that it was the talk of the hospital. He wondered if he should tell her, since once the reporters figured out who was the nurse taking care of him, would begin to pester her. “You know, as ironic as it is, today is a pretty okay day to end up in the hospital. Apparently, some celebrity is in here. There’s a throng of reporters outside. Maybe you’ll get put on TV if you get well enough to leave before they do.” Billy said, smiling at him. "Just trying to make light conversation… but seriously, can I get you anything?” Zayn thought for a moment. Did he need anything? "Perhaps a glass of water?" he softly asked. He was still feeling a dizzy and was hoping that some water would help with it. Just as he asked Billy for some water, the door opened again and shut very quickly. Jay had managed to sneak back into the room and Zayn was sure that it had not been easy. He smiled apologetically at his friend. As if not noticing Billy, the bass player began speaking. "Zayn, this had better be the last time you are in the hospital. It's insane out there. Luckily, Brody and Cody are amazing at keeping the camera on them. You know how they are. They love the attention almost as much as you do." Zayn laughed at his friend. He wondered if Billy knew of their band and if so how would she react to finding out that he was the reason for all of the trouble. Jay seemed to pay the girl no mind at all, continuing to speak. "They're all like, 'How's Zayn? Did he OD? What does this mean for Pillar of Society?' I mean really? Reporters are fucking stupid. They can't even let you get better before trying to bombard you." Jay gently sat down in the chair that was near the hospital bed.
It was obvious to Zayn that his friend was stressed and it was all his fault. He would have to find a way to make it up to the band. "Oh, this is Billy." Zayn said, motioning towards the nurse. "Billy, this is Jay." Jay smiled at the girl. "Pleased to meet you, Billy. Thanks for helping take care of this idiot." he said. "Sorry that I've cause you so much trouble." Zayn said towards the girl. He meant it. He had not meant to cause such problems that night when he'd began drinking that night.
Billy was busy going over charts and graphs, checking and rechecking his vitals and his hospital background. As she was doing so, a soft voice interrupted her calculations. "Perhaps a glass of water?" Her blue hues rose off the page in alarm. How could she have forgotten that?! Of course he’d be thirsty, poor man had been knocked out for hours! “Oh my God, of course!” she gushed, placing her papers down and flitting over to the sink. She took one of the paper cups that resided under the cabinet and filled it with the water, opening a small round can to reveal itself as an ice bucket. She plopped in two cubes and took the water over to his bed side, placing it on the tray next to his am.
“Sorry it’s not bottled, it never is. Sometimes we leave the room and pretend to go get one, but we don’t. It’s still tap. Don’t tell anyone.” She was smiling the entire time, doing what nurses do best, which is to be warm and welcoming. She went back to her charts and started her calculations over again. She became completely absorbed in her work, so absorbed that she thought she might have heard the door, and then she caught snips of her patient talking to himself. ” They love the attention almost as much as you do." He sounded like his voice was much better after the glass of water. “They love the attention almost as much as you do." Billy began looking through his charts for schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder. "Oh, this is Billy."
At the sound of her name she turned to him with a sad smile, only to have it vanish as quickly as she had materialized it. "Billy, this is Jay." She was speechless. "Pleased to meet you, Billy. Thanks for helping take care of this idiot," came from the would-be charming man. Who the hell did this guy think he was? Her patient was in recovery this was not his living room for idle chit-chat! “Yes, hello, now get out.” Her voice was stern and demanding. “Visiting hours are clearly posted, and this man is in recovery.” Like a mad mother bear, she crossed the room in surprising speed for her height. She yanked the door open and literally shoved the other man out of the room. From the outside, he would hear the distinct click of a locking mechanism.
"Sorry that I've caused you so much trouble.” Billy turned to her patient and softened a little. “You’re no trouble at all. I apologize, but you need your rest. No visitors until the doctor clears you to be well enough for them.” Again, she managed to make her voice sound warm and firm at the same time. The man’s medicines would be kicking in soon, and he’d be passed out all over again. What was it in all of her patients thinking they were superhumans? ‘I got hit by a car!’ Then the next day—‘ I’m completely fine, honest!’ Shaking her head, she finished up with her work and left the room through a side door that adjoined to another patient’s room.
The Friday morning was bright and warm. Amy walked down the halls of the hospital in a bright and cherry mood. She briefly stopped by room 138, smiling brightly. “The reporters are all gone now, and the doctor has cleared you to leave. I just need you to sign out once you’re finished dressing.” Amy gently placed his bag of clothes on the chair beside the door, and then closed said door behind her. She had other work to be doing, room 138 was just one of her many priorities.
Billy didn’t have work in the hospital today, but she did have work in the Café. Today she was dressed in a white shirt that fit her snugly, with the Cafés logo over her left breast. She was play flirting with the grumpy red head behind the counter named Marge. “Here’s your check, Miss Holland, now get out of here you brown-noser,” the woman huffed, her voice sounding as though she’d been smoking for the better half of her life. Billy grinned and took her check. “You look beautiful today, Marge!” she chirped, turning to walk out. Just as she did so, she came chest to chest with Amy’s pacient. “Oh, Mr. Spicer, excuse me!” she gushed, backing up and blushing intensely. “Watch where you’re going, Billy!” came the raspy voice of Marge. “I’m really sorry,” Billy added, side stepping to move out of his way, and in doing so she bumped right into John, the Fedex man, causing him to topple the three boxes he was carrying. Distraught, she began a slew of apologies, rushing to help him pick up the boxes.
Friday morning, Zayn had awoken quite early. He was brought breakfast at around eight-thirty and quickly ate. He was hoping to be able to get discharged so that he could hopefully be able to see Hailee. Sarah had found out about the alcohol poisoning. She'd called the hospital and spoken to him on the phone around seven. She'd agreed to allow him to go ahead and take Hailee for the weekend. Zayn figured that Sarah probably had some sort of date or something like that, otherwise he doubted that the woman would have allowed him to take the small four year old. They agreed to meet at the coffee shop that was not far from downtown, where the hospital was located. Jay had promised to pick Zayn and Hailee up, he was in the area. “The reporters are all gone now, and the doctor has cleared you to leave. I just need you to sign out once you’re finished dressing.” Zayn heard Amy say. He felt slightly disappointed that it had not been Billy. He didn't bother acknowledging the woman. She was already gone. He slowly got out of the bed and made his way over to the bag. Dressing quickly, he walked into the bathroom. He did his hair and applied his eyeliner. If he was going to be out in the public he wanted to make sure that he looked presentable. Satisfied with his look, Zayn made his way to the desk and signed himself out of the hospital. He made his way quickly out of the large building.
As he exited the hospital, Zayn decided against trying to hide from the reporters and his fans. They weren't at the hospital yet but would be soon. Once they found out that he'd left on foot, they would start looking for him. He normally didn't mind this, but he just wanted to pick up his daughter and get her home. He'd been stuck in the hospital for three days and he was very glad to be out. He made his way down the long streets, dodging as many people as he could. He crossed the street, near the theater and restaurants that littered the large street. He saw the coffee shop. He quickly sent Jay a text to let him know where he was. The bass player would probably bring their security, knowing how crazy it was probably going to get. Luckily it didn't appear as if there was many people there right now. He quickly walked in, hoping that he'd escaped reality for at least a few minutes. He'd not really been paying much attention to his surroundings as he walked and as a result Zayn felt a small pressure against his chest. He looked down to see Billy. “Oh, Mr. Spicer, excuse me!” she said, moving back from the man and blushing. "No, it's all right. It was my fault. I wasn't paying attention." he said kindly, smiling at her. “I’m really sorry,” Billy added, moving out of Zayn's way but into the Fedex man's way. The man dropped the packages that he'd been carrying and Billy was trying to help the man. Zayn quickly moved to Billy's side and picked up the larger box. He handed the box to the man and it was then that he saw people starting to gather at the coffee shop's large windows. Jay must be there if they weren't trying to come in. He ignored the fans and reporters turning back to Billy. "You can call me Zayn, by the way. I was so doped up the other day that I didn't even think to introduce myself." he said to the woman. He was smiling at her.
Cameras were going off and Zayn could here all of the people outside yelling his name. He turned to look at those that adored him. He brightly waved at them, flashing a bright smile. They seemed to go crazy at this. Zayn wondered how Billy would react to this. There was no way that she'd be able to get out of the shop right now. It was then that he heard the most beautiful voice in the world. "Daddy! Daddy!" Hailee was running towards Zayn as quickly as she could, her mother following behind her daughter slowly. It was obvious the woman didn't want to be there. Zayn quickly picked his daughter up, bringing her into a tight hug. The small child wrapped her arms around Zayn's neck as tightly as she could. "I've left her things with Jay. I'll come by and pick her up Sunday night." Sarah said, her voice giving away exactly how much she cared for Zayn and the child that she'd had with him. To Sarah, Hailee was a reminder of what she'd lost. "Alright. Tell Mommy by. She's got to get going." Zayn said softly. Hailee waved at her mother, still not letting completely go of her father. The small girl had missed her Daddy terribly and she wanted to stay in his arms for as long as he'd let her. Sarah rolled her eyes and left the shop quickly. The meeting had gone a bit better than Zayn had thought that it would. He turned back to Billy. "This is Hailee. Hailee can you introduce yourself to Ms. Billy?" He was smiling. He wasn't sure what Billy was thinking but he hoped that she wasn't freaking out because he was famous. The small child smiled at the woman. "I'm Hailee Jayla Spicer. I'm thwee years old and my Daddy is a su..sup..a roc..a rockstar." Hailee was beaming at the blonde woman, obviously proud of herself for being able to tell Billy what her father had asked. "Would you like to join us for coffee? Our treat. It's my fault that you can't leave right now and it's the least that I can do." Zayn asked. He felt himself hoping that Billy would accept and join him for coffee. The fans were still screaming but Zayn had his eyes glued to Billy.
Billy morbidly handed the boxes to the star-struck looking postal man. He thanked her and then kept staring at Amy’s patient. Billy turned to him, wondering what the postal man could be looking at. Sure, the guy was covered in tattoos and looked a little… different… but that was no reason to be outwardly rude about it. “You can call me Zayn, by the way. I was so doped up the other day that I didn't even think to introduce myself,” the patient, no, Zayn, was saying. Billy eyed him suspiciously for a moment, before her thoughts were interrupted by the noises coming from outside.
There was that tall handsome fellow from the hospital, waving his arms around and basking in the flash of cameras. Confused, Billy watched as the crowd took notice of Zayn inside the door that Jay was blocking and they erupted into a muffled through the glass uproar. She glanced to the tall man beside her, uncomfortable with the camera flashes that were capturing her as well, in her café uniform.
Zayn smiled at them, and they went wild, throwing themselves and their camera’s into the glass to try and get closer look from around Jay who boldy blocked off the door to everyone but a red headed woman and a small child. The two entered, letting in a roar of noise as they opened the door. All around them, the people in the shop seemed to have paused what they were doing, everyone staring at Billy and Zayn. "Daddy! Daddy!" The young girl with the woman bolted across the distance of space between herself and the tall man beside Billy. Zayn scooped her up and looked as if he actually had some pigment to his pale skin tone.
The red headed woman stormed up to Zayn, looking rather miffed to have had to come through such a crowd of people to see him. Billy, utterly confused now, quietly side stepped as the woman began to speak in a bitter and flat tone. "I've left her things with Jay. I'll come by and pick her up Sunday night." The red headed, punk looking woman with a nose ring turned her eyes viciously to Billy, sizing her up, before she made her way out of the coffee shop. The woman barged through the crowd, ignoring the microphones and cameras that were shoved into her face.
"This is Hailee. Hailee can you introduce yourself to Ms. Billy?" The words came from Zayn, and they brought Billy’s attention back to the inside of the café. "I'm Hailee Jayla Spicer. I'm thwee years old and my Daddy is a su..sup..a roc..a rockstar,” chirped the mirror image of her father. Billy was still standing in the walk way of the café, looking a little dazed and clinging to the now crumpled envelope that held her check. “Nice to meet you, Hailee,” she managed to say, her voice soft and airy as if she were not completely there. Everything was still processing.
"Would you like to join us for coffee? Our treat. It's my fault that you can't leave right now and it's the least that I can do." Zayn was saying. Billy stared at him for a moment, her blue hues taking him in with growing realization. Spicer. Why did that name sound so incredibly familiar all the sudden? And that red head, she seemed so familiar… and so did that tall handsome man outside, Jay. As if the weight of the world had settled on her shoulders, she flashed back to the other night.
She was cleaning around the house before she went to sleep, and Jake had jumped onto the remote. The TV had flicked on to the news, and on it was the picture of a man, a rock star in a famous band called Pillar of Society. Zayn Spicer, the lead singer, had recently broken up with his girlfriend, Sarah. A picture of the woman looking very broody flashed on the screen as the blonde news reporter went on to talk about the problems it might cause their daughter, Hailee, in the future.
As if she were seeing him for the first time, Billy stepped back to take him in. “It was very nice meeting you both, but, I think I should go,” she replied shortly. Zayn Spicer, the millionaire poster child of the Rock music scene was standing right in front of her. All Billy could think of was the many times she’d seen him in a magazine or on the tv. His band was known for getting into all sorts of trouble. Wrecking hotel rooms, crashing cars, drugs, alcohol, the works.
“Make sure you take good care of him, he could use some taking care of,” Billy said kindly to Hailee. With that, she was rushing out the back door of the establishment, completely embarrassed. How had she not known that it was him? God, she was an idiot! Way to look like a total bimbo in front of hundreds of cameras, Billy!”
"I know. It's not that simple though. You know that. I'm working on it." Zayn replied, sitting down on the couch and turning the television on. The media was going on about Zayn seen with 'another woman' besides Sarah. They were probably talking about Billy. He hoped that they would leave her alone. She clearly had wanted nothing to do with him or Hailee. She'd left rather quickly. Jay walked over and sat beside his friend. "You know, we really need to get back on tour. We were only halfway through it when you ended things with Sarah and decided to take a break. We need to start rehearsing and working on our stage set." Jay said gently. He knew that Zayn had needed the break as he'd taken the breakup hard. Still, they had a job to do. "You're right. Monday we'll get started on rehearsal." Zayn said. Jay only nodded. As Zayn watched the television, the news was reporting everything about the horrible breakup with Sarah and how they were still fighting for custody of Hailee. They were criticizing him for his alcohol poisoning. They were even going on how bringing another woman into Hailee's life right now would be damaging to the child. All of it was bullshit to Zayn. He was going to do whatever he thought was best.
Saturday
Jay had left Zayn's house early that morning. Zayn had been woken by his daughter pouncing upon the bed. He laughed at her, feeling so much happier now that she was home. He now needed to figure out how to win custody of the girl. It would be hard with their continuing tour. He was at a loss. He felt like he needed to get out of the house. He dressed Hailee and loaded them into his older car. Noone would know that it was him. He drove to the more secluded park that most people didn't use anymore. It was out of the way and with the newer park having been built four years ago not many really wanted to go there. Zayn stopped on the way to pick them something up to eat. Hailee was practically bouncing in her car seat. He pulled into the parking space at the park and unloaded his daughter. She took off a bit ahead of him laughing and smiling brightly. Zayn sat upon one of the old benches that was fairly close to the play area. He had his eyes glued to his daughter. She was having the time of her life. It was moments like this that made Zayn glad that he'd left everything behind of his old life. That he'd followed his dreams. Had he not, Hailee wouldn't have been in his life. Zayn thought that he heard a car pull up though paid it no mind. "Daddy! Will you push me?" Hailee yelled towards Zayn. He smiled at the small girl. He got up and walked over to the swing and helped the girl into the seat. He gently pushed the girl for some time. Zayn looked up to see that the car was still there. It wasn't the paparazzi or a fan or they'd have already been in his face. He wondered who it was. Hailee wouldn't allow Zayn to stop pushing her. She was smiling and laughing brightly. "Ms. Billy!" Hailee was yelling. Zayn looked up to see if it was Billy getting out of the car.
The Saturday morning had been hell. Jake had woken her up at six am promptly to be fed his tuna. Billy had fallen asleep again mid-tuna making, which resulted in her waking up a couple of hours later with bits of tuna in her hair. Jake, deprived of his breakfast, had taken his rage out on her pillow in the bedroom, leaving a feathery mess in the room. Billy spent the rest of her morning showering, cleaning up the mess, buying a new pillow, and fixing up her apartment, which surprisingly managed to get pretty messy despite only her and the cat living there.
As her morning was over, and the afternoon was setting in, Billy decided to take advantage of her day off and go for a much needed jog. Leaving a bit of dry cat food mixed with Tuna as a peace offering to Jake, who at that moment was entirely too busy worshiping the broken ice machine, Billy showed herself out. Jake meanwhile sat, transfixed with the broken ice maker. Every so often the fridge would shoot out a random piece of ice, due to the broken mechanics of the machine. The ice would go skittering across the floor, and Jake would shoot off as a white blur after it. Billy made a mental note to have that fixed at some point.
She parked her yellow punch bug under the shade of some trees and stepped out. She wore a black pair of jogging pants with a lime green accent line. Her lime green sports bra matched it perfectly. She was just about to put in her iPhone ear buds when she heard a small voice from across the way. “Miss Billy!” Billy froze and looked over her shoulder. If it wasn’t Mr. Rock Star and his golden girl. Memories of last night’s news report with pictures of her and Zayn picking up boxes flashed across her mind.
She had half a thought to go about her jog as if she had not heard the girl, but her tender heart kept her from doing so. “Good afternoon, Miss Hailee!” she called back, walking over to the play area. She stood a couple feet away from the swing, offering the girl a smile. “Enjoying your day at the park?” Billy asked, ignoring the girl’s father. Judging by the Cheshire grin on the girl’s face, Hailee was having a wonderful time at the park today. “If you’re good, you should get your daddy to take you for ice cream. All princesses deserve ice cream,” Billy added, unable to stop smiling. The girl was too adorable not to instantly fall in love with. No wonder the media loved her so much.
"Hailee!" Zayn said, his voice quite stern. The girl immediately went quiet. "Sorry, Daddy." she said quietly. She was looking quite sad. She'd only wanted Ms. Billy to join them. Zayn stopped pushing Hailee telling her to play on the playground. He slowly walked towards Billy. "I'm sorry about Hailee. Don't feel like you have to go because of her." he said softly. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it. Taking slow drags every once in a while, Zayn watched Hailee. He remained quiet for some time. "Can I ask you something?" he asked, eyeing Billy for a moment. "Why don't you like me? Have I don't something to offend you?" He appeared to be watching his daughter but was watching Billy from the corner of his eye. He wasn't sure what had possessed him to ask her such a question. It shouldn't matter to him if she liked him or not. He doubted that he'd ever see her again and they would slowly forget about each other.
He lit a cigarette and took a few drags from it, causing Billy to scowl a little. She turned to walk off, but was stopped as he said, "Can I ask you something?" Billy stopped and slowly twirled around to face him, flashing a smile. "You just did." She then turned back around to keep walking, but he began to speak again, holding her back once more. "Why don't you like me? Have I don't something to offend you?" Billy stopped, her back still to him. She slowly turned to look at him, her eyes trailing up his slender frame. "You've only offended me by assuming I don't like you. Honestly, I don't know you. How could I like you?" She shifted her weight onto her hips and regarded him curiously. "I'll forgive you, though, if you buy us ice cream. All princesses deserve ice cream," she said, a smile tugging at her lips. She was raised in the south, and it was unladylike of her to judge before she gave him a chance. So, putting the tabloids aside and throwing caution to the wind, she agreed with herself that she would let him take her for ice cream. But it would only be ice cream. Only. Ice cream.
As he led the way into the small shop, Zayn couldn't help but remember how Sarah had used to love going for ice cream. He couldn't believe that she never took Hailee. He opened the door to allow Billy to enter first. "Ladies first." he said, smiling. He sat Hailee down and the little girl followed Billy into the shop. As soon as she saw the large display of the many flavors, she took off to the glass, trying to look. Zayn walked in and walked up to his daughter. He loved this ice cream shop. It was strangely designed and had no windows that looked outside. It was highly unlikely that any reporters or fans would see him. Although Zayn loved being famous it was always nice to be able to get away and just be himself. The older man that ran the shop was speaking with Hailee and Billy, trying to take their orders. Hailee wanted the bubblegum pink ice cream. Zayn didn't even need to tell the old man to put the ice cream in a bowl. They were there almost every weekend and Hailee was hard to forget. Zayn ordered his ice cream, a mocha frozen yogurt bowl. He was smiling at Billy and Hailee. Hailee was standing very close to Billy and was asking the woman how she'd met her father. The old man handed Zayn his and Hailee's ice cream and then handed Billy hers. Hailee quickly made her way to the table that they always sat at near the back. Zayn followed slowly, close to Billy. The little girl quickly sat down and waited for the adults. As he reached the table, Zayn place the pink ice cream in front of Hailee. "Look! Mine's pink because I'm a princess! Right, Ms. Billy?" she said smiling at the woman. Zayn sat down beside of his daughter, smiling. He was dreading Sunday, as he always did. He didn't want to let Hailee go back with Sarah. Hailee dug into her ice cream, not paying much attention to the adults. Zayn slowly worked on his frozen yogurt.
"I am sorry for earlier." Zayn said, eyeing the woman in front of him. He went quiet for a few moments, thinking. "Would you tell me about yourself? I find you..interesting." he said. Now why had he said that? Idiot. Now she was going to think that he was the sex crazed man that the paparazzi liked to try and make him out to be. He said nothing, listening to the woman.
"I'm thinking that we'll go to The Scream'n Cone,” Zayn was saying. It was a popular little place, and they did have amazing ice cream. “You are welcome to ride with us, if you'd like. Or, you can meet us there?" That was bold… Smiling to dismiss her concern, Billy nodded. “I’ll meet you there.” Just then, a little black haired princess came running up to her, looking to Billy with big doe eyes. "Are you coming, Ms. Billy?" “Yes, little princess. How could I say no to such a cute face?”
Billy waited for them to head to their vehicle, and then made her way to hers. She gave a cheerful wave to the little girl as she waved frantically from the back seat. As soon as they were out of sight, Billy nearly threw herself into her back seat, desperately looking for a shirt or something to cover her midsection. She couldn’t imagine going into an ice cream parlor in her workout suit.
She praised God as she found a black tanktop scrunched up under her driver seat. Luckily, she kept her car pretty clean so the shirt wasn’t into too much of a disarray. She shook it out and pulled it on, thankful that it wasn’t too wrinkly. Damn her spontaneous decisions. She searched through her car for the perfume bottle that she knew was in here. Once she found it, she gave herself a few spritz and then raced to catch up to the other car.
She arrived, thankful to her speeding, just as they did. She tugged nervously at her tanktop, and pulled her hair to the front of her person. "Ladies first." She smiled at Zayn and let Hailee go in, then followed after her. Billy waited in line, ignoring the looks they were getting from other customers. Hailee and Zayn ordered, and then she got some standard chocolate for herself. Haliee’s was a bright pink in color, and the little girl turned to Billy and said, "Look! Mine's pink because I'm a princess! Right, Ms. Billy?" “That’s right!” Billy responded, unable to keep herself from smiling. The child was incredibly adorable.
As they sat down, Zayn began talking. "I am sorry for earlier." “Earlier in the park, or earlier when you were almost mobbed to death?” It was obviously a joke, by her tone and the smile that toyed on her face. Delicately spooning a bit of ice cream in her mouth, as she had opted for a bowl instead of a cone, Billy sat back in her seat to look at him. “Would you tell me about yourself? I find you..interesting." Billy cocked a brow at Zayn. He sure is to the point… “Oh, um… Well… I recently moved here.. with my fiancé. We’re from Texas. I have a white cat, named Jake. I work, as you know, in the hospital and at the local coffee shop.”
She looked out the window at the cars passing by. Her life sounded so boring. “My fiancé and I split after I came home to find a Scarlett Johanson look-a-like in my bed… I still have Jake, though. What about you?” The talk of her and her ex splitting seemed to roll off her back like water, seemingly not fazing her. “And little miss Hailee. What does she do? Is she in ballet? She would be a great ballerina.”
Hailee then turned back to her ice cream, ignoring the adults once again. Zayn smiled gently at Billy. "As to your earlier question, I'm afraid that I can't tell you much about my life before moving to California. I've never spoken to the media about my life before Pillar of Society. They have no idea where I'm from or who my family is. Which is how I'd like to keep it. I don't need reporters swarming my parents. They already can't stand me. I've not spoken to them in eleven years and I'm not even sure that they know they have a granddaughter." The handsome man paused for a moment, looking down at the table. It was a nervous habit that he'd developed as a child, a sign that he was uncomfortable about the topic. He looked back up at Billy, his brown eyes staring into her blue hues. "Anyway, I moved out here with the guys when we were signed to our record company. It wasn't long after that that I started dating Sarah. We were together for ten years and I came home one night and found her with some guy. I broke it off with her that night. She of course swore that she'd have.." he nodded towards Hailee, not wanting the girl to realize what they were talking about. "As of right now, she's doing pretty good on keeping that promise. I've not felt like performing. Jay's been trying to get me back to it. I need to to, I know. We were in the middle of a tour when all of this crap happened." Zayn was still staring at Billy. He wondered if he should explain to her why he'd gotten the alcohol poisoning. No. He wouldn't say anything unless she did. No need to talk about that in front of Hailee.
Zayn started talking again once Hailee was convinced she had won the argument over who was a better Powder Puff, Bubbles or Buttercup. I've not spoken to them in eleven years and I'm not even sure that they know they have a granddaughter." Billy was a little surprised to hear that his parents had such little involvement in his life. More so than that, she was annoyed that he didn't share his life prior to the band with her for his publicity reasons.
Resisting the roll of her eyes, she allowed him to continue. "Anyway, I moved out here with the guys when we were signed to our record company. It wasn't long after that that I started dating Sarah. We were together for ten years and I came home one night and found her with some guy. I broke it off with her that night. She of course swore that she'd have.." Zayn paused to nod in the direction of his daughter. Billy nodded, understanding that he didn't want Hailee to know he was talking about how he lost custody of her."As of right now, she's doing pretty good on keeping that promise. I've not felt like performing. Jay's been trying to get me back to it. I need to to, I know. We were in the middle of a tour when all of this crap happened."
Billy eyed him curiously. He was the one that had just gotten out of the hospital with alcohol poisoning, so maybe it was better for Hailee to be with her mom? After all, Zayn was living the life of a rock star. His face was everywhere. Everything he did was plastered all over the television for the world to see. What kind of life would that be for a four year old? Then again, Billy could see that his little look-alike was his world, and it must be hard for him to live without her.
"I'm sorry," was all she could think to say, to sum up her feelings regarding the situation. "But, at least you get to see her on the weekends?" she offered. Billy glanced out the window at the hustle and bustle of the cars. "Do you enjoy it?" she asked. "The Rock Star life, I mean... it doesn't... get old or... you don't ever wonder about what you're going to do once your good looks fade and you develop such a severe level of arthritis that you can't move your fingers anymore? Or, worse, all the smoking and drugs finally take their tole on your vocal cords?" Her words sounded a little judgmental, but she was genuinely just curious.
The man had finished his dessert and was now waiting for Hailee to finish. She always seemed to take a bit longer to finish, enjoying the rare treat. "So, do you enjoy working at the hospital? or do you prefer working at the coffee shop?" he asked. Zayn was thinking back to his home again. Maybe he could tell Billy..but..he wanted to make sure that she wouldn't tell anyone. Zayn pondered for a moment. What would be the best way to figure out how trustworthy she was? "So what is your family like? Do you have any siblings? I'm an only child, I'm afraid. Then I met Jay and the twins and they became my second family." he said, smiling at Billy. Zayn had to admit that he did enjoy sitting here talking with Billy. For some reason, he felt like he wanted to get to know her, to spend time with her. This confused him. It made no sense to him why he would be feeling like this. Hailee was now trying to get Billy's attention. "Can you come over to play with me, Ms. Billy, tomorrow before my Mommy comes to get me? Pretty please?" she asked innocently. The girl was quickly becoming attached to the woman. She was smiling at Billy, happy that her Daddy didn't seem to be upset with her for asking the question. Zayn was curious for Billy's answer. He was sure that she'd say no but he would let the woman speak for herself.
"Well, that must be nice," she said, thinking aloud. "I think that if you're doing something that you love you shouldn't regret it, no matter the end result." "Well, I can't exactly agree with that," she laughed. "I see patients come into the hospital regularly with meth and other drug problems... I'm sure they're doing what they love, but, I don't agree that they shouldn't regret the damage they've done to their bodies, or their families..." "So, do you enjoy working at the hospital? or do you prefer working at the coffee shop?" She had to smile. Maybe she was being a little to hard on him? "Well, I do love my job at the hospital but it gets to be very sad sometimes... it's not the happiest job in the world, sometimes, but there are other times... times when you save a life or you see a cured child... they make it worth it. The coffee shop is nice, too, mostly because I enjoy the smell."
"So what is your family like? Do you have any siblings? I'm an only child, I'm afraid. Then I met Jay and the twins and they became my second family." Billy laughed. "Okay, so.. My family is... Well, they're a bunch of rednecks from Texas, and yes I have two brothers. One older, and one younger. I always wanted to be an only child when I was growing up but now... I like knowing that I can call them if I ever need them. I'm sure your band is a lot like that. I nearly had to beat Jay with a bat to get him to leave you in the recovery room." It was nice, though, to see such loyalty. The band could have made a lot of money on pictures of Zayn laid up in a hospital bed.
"Can you come over to play with me, Ms. Billy, tomorrow before my Mommy comes to get me? Pretty please?" Billy shifted in her seat a little uncomfortably, she didn't like telling the girl no, but it was entirely inappropriate. "Oh, princess, I'm afraid not...But I would really love to see you at the park again sometime. I like to jog, so maybe I will see you next weekend?" Billy turned her hues to Zayn apologetically. It was just too soon for her to be going back to his place, she barely knew the man. Celebrity or not, she wasn't that sort of girl.
"It was very nice meeting both of you, again," she added, finishing off her ice cream. "I think I'll have to buy one of your CDs, so I can see what all the fuss is about." Although she much prefered country music to rock music, Billy couldn't help but want to give this scrawny pale man a chance. Covered in tattoos and a little different from the rest, but famous, so there had to be something about him. Maybe he would sing for her sometime?
Billy stood and pulled at her slightly wrinkled tank, trying to straighten it out again. "I, uh, well... See you next weekend?" she offered them both a smile, and a little wave to the girl, and then walked outside to get back in her car and go home. When she got there, Jake was totally uninterested in her. He still sat under the ice machine, waiting for that random splurt of an ice cube which had entertained him for hours. "Yes, Jake, Pray... pray to the Ice Lord!" Billy giggled and side stepped the cat, pulling out a thing of tuna for him and placing it on the counter. Maybe she should have gone to Zayns? It would have been nicer than staying home alone?
No... she would just end up another fan girl in his line of who-I've-slept-with. With a little sigh, she walked into the living room and sat down on the couch. She had forgotten to give him her number...he'd probably forget all about her. Jake popped up into her lap, curling up against her stomach with a purr. "At least I still have you, Jakey," she sighed.
Middle of the Week
Zayn was laying in bed...alone. As he stared up into the ceiling, his thoughts drifted back to the previous Sunday. Sarah had been very moody towards him when she'd picked Hailee up. She'd threatened him like she always did. He sighed heavily. Zayn wanted so badly to get custody of his little girl. Then, he wouldn't have to worry about weather or not being able to see Hailee. Zayn got out of his bed, and got into the shower. He took his time, allowing the steamy water to run all over his body. Once he deemed himself clean enough, Zayn dried his hair and styled it. He quickly got dressed into his dark jeans, band t-shirt, studded metal belt, and converse. Zayn made his way down the stairs and quickly grabbed his keys and phone. Zayn made his way to his nicer care and hopped in. He quickly pulled out and made his way into town. He drove around for some time before arriving at the coffee shop that he'd been at not too many days before. He quickly put his sunglasses on. He was hoping that no one would realize who he was. He just really didn't feel like dealing with the media or fans. Zayn quickly got out of his car and made his way into the small shop. He walked up to the counter and someone was asking him what they could get for him. "How about..a grande mocha?" he asked, smiling.
She stopped briefly as a smile toyed across her face. "Sure thing," she smiled. She quickly whipped together his order just as Lisa came back from smoking. Billy personally carried Zayn's order around the counter to him, handing the drink out to him. "Fancy seeing you here," she said with a smile. "How, um... How's Hailee?" she asked, toying with her silver charm bracelet. "Hey, I'm sorry about rushing out last weekend. Not every day you, uh..." she glanced around, noticing that he had managed to not draw such attention to himself thus far. "Meet someone like you," she decided to finish. Zayn looked pretty handsome today. Damn Hollywood looks. She turned her attention away from him and to the cafe. "Did you get back to...work?" Did they call it that?
Zayn wasn't sure why'd he'd asked the woman such a question. She'd probably rather do anything else than something with him. Zayn kept his eyes on Billy. He hoped though, that she would agree to spending a bit of time with him. "You know, like dinner or something like that." he mumbled. This confused him. He couldn't remember a time when he'd felt nervous about asking a woman out to do anything. What was it about Billy that had him so..wound up? He would never find out if he at least didn't try to get to know her. Zayn gave her his best smile, hoping to win her over.
Billy looked him over, ignoring her reflection in his sunglasses. What normally gave him inspiration? The fuck? Why do I care? "I was wondering if you have any plans for tonight?" The question caught her off guard and she could feel the blush rising in her cheeks. "Well, I'll have to check my schedule.. Call my people, you know, see if I'm free... I might have a gig, or something..." she smiled up at him, obviously teasing. She pulled out her cellphone and without dialing any numbers, she put the phone to her ear. "Yes, it's me... Yes, I need to find out if I'm free tonight? What? No gigs?" she looked up at him, in mock shock. "Well then... Alright. Well, keep me updated, you know my fans can't stand to be away from me for too long!" she clicked off her fake phone conversation and put her cell back into her pockets. "Well, it looks like I'm free... What did you have in mind?"
"You know, like dinner or something like that." He seemed shy, and uncomfortable. It was completely adorable, to see such a badass squirm from her gaze. "I'd like that... How about Romanos, at seven." She reached over and took his coffee from him, pulling a sharpie from her back pocket, and scribbling her address and cell number on it. "Pick me up." She flashed him a smile, and then turned and slipped out of the cafe door. 'Always leave them wanting more', at least that's what the magazines said. Once she was safely in the back where her car was parked, she peeked around to make sure no one could see her, and then let out a little squeal and happy dance. Climbing into her car, she zipped home to tell Jake about being asked out by the hottest bachelor in California.
Zayn quickly made his way out of the cafe and back into his car. He buckled up and then slowly pulled out. He drove until he reached his large house. He noted that a car was parked outside that wasn't one of his. Jay was there. Probably trying to get him back to 'work' as Billy had put it. Zayn parked his car and got out of the vehicle. He slowly made his way into the house, to deal with his dear friend.
Around five o'clock, after Jay had left the house, Zayn began getting ready for that night. He showered, styled his hair, and got dressed. He was wearing quite a bit of black, as usual. His outfit was boots, pants, belt, white dress shirt and a black coat. Making sure that he looked at least decent, Zayn made his way out of the house and to his car. He got in and buckled himself in. He then pulled out of the driveway and began his journey to Billy's home.
It took him a bit to get to her home. He slowly pulled in and parked. Taking a small breath, Zayn got out of the car and made his way to Billy's front door. He softly knocked and waited. He hoped that tonight would go well. He actually didn't care about trying to get Billy to come home with him. He actually wanted to have a good time, out..on a date with the girl. It was all very exciting for Zayn. He was smiling brightly as the door opened.
With a sigh she turned away from her mirror. Billy walked down the stairs, glancing to the clock on the wall just as she heard a knock at her door. "Shit!" Panic filled her and she ran towards the door, grabbing her red clutch. Taking a deep breath she pulled herself together and opened the door, flashing a smile when she saw him. My god you're so fucking sexy... she immidately thought, but she decided it would be better to say, "Hey, you ready?" Smiling, she walked passed him, closing the locked door behind her and walking to his car. Billy paused to let him get the car door, and got in. She gave him directions and as they walked up to the restaurant doors, she offered a bright smile to the hostess. "Hey Bev, two please." The girl smiled while looking at Billy, and then stood shell-shocked staring at Zayn. "Is that--" "Yes, so I'm sure you'll be able to get us my favorite table..." "Of course, Billy.." Bev grinned, gesturing for them to follow her. Over her shoulder, Bev mouthed 'WOW' to Billy, and kept walking. The preferred seat was in a back corner hidden by a wall. Billy sat down, ordered a glass of red whine, and situated herself in her seat. With a smile, she looked up at Zayn. "You look... great..." She felt the blush rising in her cheeks.
As they reached the table, Zayn waited for Billy to sit. He then joined her. When asked what he wanted to drink, he decided on water. There was really no need for him to consume any alcohol..especially while on a date with the nurse that had helped to take care of him after his recent alcohol poisoning. Billy was smiling at him. "You look... great..." Zayn smiled. "Thank you. If." he paused for only a second, "I may say so, you look very beautiful." He was staring at her with his dark eyes. She was beautiful. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to stop staring at her. What was it about Billy that seemed to draw him to her. "So, why don't you tell me about your friends?" he asked, smiling. He was interested in learning more about her. Zayn listened intently, happy that noone was bothering them. He'd been worried when they'd first come in.
