a character in “Winter's Bounty”, as played by phoenixheart

Description

ImageName: Leah Payne
Nickname: Elfie, Lee
Position: Carpenter Apprentice
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Lesbian

Race: Elf
Age: 24
Height: 5'4
Description: Leah is a tiny little thing. She's been told that by plenty of the people on board, you don't need to remind her. Like most of her people, she's a little on the short side and has a narrow build, although her shoulders and upper arms are slightly more developed. When she's working, she has her hair tied back, albeit very messily. Most of Leah's clothes are a little on the plain side. There's no point wearing something fancy if all you're going to be doing is working up a sweat and surrounding yourself with wood. She does however have a particular taste for a good coat. Where her shirts and trousers are a little worse for wear, her coats are almost always in perfect condition.

Nationality: Batheon
Creed: I am a person. You are a person. That is enough
Motivation: Forever looking out for the little people
Likes: People, Green Apples, Dancing, Fancy coats, Sarcasm, Mischief, Women
Dislikes: Nobles, Hypocrites, Liars, Self-entitles assholes, Men who act like self-entitled assholes
Strengths: Carpentry- While hardly a prodigy in her chosen field, Leah's skills are solid, even if she does lack a certain flair. What she makes and repairs is solid and will last, and that is the most important thing.
People-Leah is good with people and likes being surrounded by them. She's good at understanding people, almost reading them in a sense.
Loyal- To the people she genuinely likes, Leah is a fiercely loyal friend. Those who cross her friends do so at their peril.
Weaknesses: Naive and Idealistic- While her solid beliefs tend to keep on her on track, Leah can quite easily be accused of being too simplistic in her view of the world. She's yet to realise that there are a million shade of grey and that's okay.
Holds grudges- Forgive and forget isn't a phrase Leah is familiar with. If you should be one of the few people she only tolerates, be careful, you are nearing the end of her patience and you won't be getting back on once you drop off.

Personality: To say Leah is a 'people person' would be putting it mildly. She loves being around people and learning about them, listening to what they have to say and building up the picture of who they are. That isn't to say she passively accepts everything that she's told. If she learns something about someone that she doesn't like or that challenges her ideals or beliefs, she'll call them out on it. Leah is the eternal optimist, or at least she tries to be, and no one is without worth in Leah's eyes, therefore everyone should be treated as a king, or queen if that's their preference, or no one should be. This is why she constantly looks out for the little people, especially her fellow elves who weren't lucky enough to be born Sédalian. Where she sees injustice, she strives to right it. If Leah finds herself lonely or having her values and her value constantly called into question, she can get incredibly frustrated and has a tendency to lash out when this happens.

Equipment:
A simple axe. It's good for cutting a lot of things, not just wood.
Her tools. Carpentry isn't just hacking at wood and hoping for the best.

History: Born in Batheon, Leah inhabited the line between Spear and Sédalian, never quite being fully accepted by either. From a young age, she noticed that the Sédalian elves were treated differently, with more respect. Life was hardly harsh for her family, but it was different. She was regularly told that she had it a lot better than most elves, especially the elves that lived overseas. Given that she was a curious child, this sparked her imagination and she was gripped with a sense of wanderlust. How bad was it that she lived like royalty in comparison? And what gave the humans of these lands the right to treat elves like that? Not quite believing the stories she was told, Leah longed to see these lands for herself. Travel was limited, her family could hardly purchase a ship and just go sailing, although that didn't stop Leah travelling Batheon when she could, rarely getting further than the next town, but it was a start.

Her uncle was the man who instilled carpentry in her. He was a fine craftsman in his own right, and had regularly made the toys Leah and her siblings played with as children. As a child, Leah would spend hours in his workshop, watching him work, utterly fascinated. As she got older, he began allowing her to help with gradually bigger projects until she was his apprentice in all but name. She often made little toys for her younger cousins, moving onto furniture for the house as she became more confident in her skills.

Given Batheon's trading, ships were often passing by. When it became clear that there was little work in her town, Leah began stalking the docks for an apprenticeship at least. After asking about, she was directed to the current carpenter on board The Wind in the Barley. She knew what he saw; a small, scrawny and very young elf girl. "I'm cheaper than whatever other people you were looking at," was her argument, "you can tell your captain that." Being an elf, there was little point in setting her price too high, especially if she was wanting to be on a Tarn ship. As she traveled with The Wind, she began to discover that the tales she had been told were true; people like her were seldom welcome anywhere. Angered by this absurdity, Leah began sharing what little pay she got with the 'little people'. If they were to be docked for a few days, Leah often raised a little hell for any local nobles. Enough to anger them, but not enough to get into serious trouble, and if she did, her master was willing to cover for her. The nobles rarely noticed a few, ok quite a lot, of missing coin. The townspeople appreciated it more anyway.

Abe stood, arrow nocked, watching the lines they had set up. If anyone got too close, he would take them out. One or two brave souls would come to close to the lines and get an arrow through the chest for their troubles. Evidently their captain hadn't realised that as he continued to give the orders for the lines to be cut.

Three, four, five. Abe's arrows were hastily dispatched.

As more men went on board, it became harder to tell friend from foe and Abe's arrows slowed. Not that the crew needed any help. They were doing a wonderful job of cutting down the Barley's crew on their own. He heard a cry off to his left. Abe turned and saw a line fall, a few good men with it. He pressed his lips into a thin line, searching for the soul who had severed the line. He saw a small, dark haired girl pulling on an axe. Frowning, he pulled the bowstring back, waiting for a clear shot on the girl. As he was about to release his arrow, she moved, lifting the axe and spinning away. Then she was gone.

Abe relaxed the bowstring, lowering his bow. From the corner of his eye, he saw another man reach for the line. Quickly and surely, Abe let his arrow fly into the man, keeping the line in tact. A familiar whistle sounded and the crew stopped. Abe lowered his bow and relaxed. They'd made it again.

"Captain Xing, the opening negotiations have concluded. The ship is yours!"

Leah held the nail steady, gently tapping it into the wood. She held another two between her teeth. How had they managed to break the bunk so badly? On second thoughts, she didn't want to know. What the crew got up to in their free time was down to them. Still, she thought, it would be nice if she didn't have to clean up after them. Leah hammered the last nail in, barely paying attention to the world around her. A war could have started there and then and she would have been none the wiser.

A loud crash echoed around the cabin. Leah started, looking around her. What? Oh, oh no. Leah scrambled to her feet, grabbing her axe as she did. She briefly remembered hearing that they were being pursued by another ship, pirates was the word bandied about by some of the more fanciful members of the crew. Whatever the truth, that ship had caught up with them and was now blowing holes in the ship; holes that she and her master were going to have to fix if they came out of this. Leah shuddered at the thought of that seat. She might as well cling to the side of the ship herself. She made her way to the deck, albeit reluctantly. All the way she could hear the cries of battle on deck.

Pirates.

Actual pirates.

Attacking the crew she had worked for for years. The same crew who had afforded her little respect because she wasn't as useful as she could be. She was just an apprentice. May their deities help them if she ever made it to master carpenter. Or would it be mistress? Who knew? More importantly at this moment in time, who cared? Leah gripped her axe, looking for the lines. If she didn't cut them, and the crew came out of this, she would be blamed for not helping. Leah sighed, heading for the lines. In the confusion of the battle, it became difficult enough to get close to a line without being killed. She swung her axe down, severing the rope and sent a handful of men into the ocean. She heard a yell behind her. Leah looked over her shoulder and saw a giant of a man coming towards her. Leah began tugging on the axe, trying to lift it free of the wood. She felt the head give and the axe came free. She spun, using her momentum to bury the axe in the side of his neck. He gave a strange, surprised sound. Evidently being killed by an elf girl wasn't on his list of things to do today. Leah pulled the axe free. Blood spurted from the wound as the man slumped. Leah looked down at her bloodstained clothes. Even when they died, men were filthy buggers.

Leah took a moment to look around. They were losing. She wasn't sure how she felt about that. Maybe if she knew more about the pirates, she would know how she felt. They took from the rich, right? Wealthy merchant ships like this one. They couldn't be all bad. A whistle rang out and the pirates stopped. Leah shifted her grip on the axe, waiting for the next move. There were perhaps a handful of the crew left. Where was Jones? She cast a cursory glance over the corpses littering the deck, not looking at any one for too long. She didn't want confirmation of what she feared.

"Captain Xing, the opening negotiations have concluded. The ship is yours!"

Well, shit.
