Secrets

Estelle is the very definition of secretive, she trusts no one and so her secrets remain just that, secrets. She has a very obsessive nature in all aspects of her life, she had suffered from OCD and is easily attached to people, tasks or things; before the apocalypse Elle had gained around seven restraining orders from ex-partners, she struggles greatly at letting people go and moving on. Now her latest obsession is finding a cure for the virus, she can spend days locked in her lab testing different vaccines, she will go without food and sleep until someone forces her to rest. Another rather big secret of hers is her mental stability, she has suffered from severe depression since her teens and schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, she has been on mediation for a long time, however recently she had stopped taking the medication and the effects are starting to show.

'I confess that I have been blind as a mole, but it is better to learn wisdom late than never to learn it at all.'

Personality

Estelle is a genius there are no two ways about it, she has been a high established member of her field since she published her first paper right out of university about the next global pandemic and little did she know just how true this would be. From the outside Ella can seem like a well composed and suave individual, she can talk herself out of almost anything, knowing how to use her charms and graces as a woman to get what she wants. However soon the cracks begin to show, she is obsessive, impulsive, abrasive and confrontational, she is always right even when she is wrong and will not take no for an answer. Ella can be rude and mean and become disillusioned, all traces of her mental illness coming into effect, if she feels sympathy she does not show it and this has come to affect every relationship in her life. She can be very coy, calculating and manipulative, she is not above using others for her own personal gain.

Fears||Weaknesses

Perhaps Estelle's greatest fear is herself, she knows that there is something wrong with her mentally and a part of her hates it, she hates things others adore such as puppies and children but she just can't bring herself to care for such trivial things. Having recently stopped taking her medication (as she believed it was affecting her work) Ella has become very unstable, she has fits of rage and sometimes even blackouts, they scare her but her obsession with finding a cure had overshadowed her rational side, she will do anything to achieve this goal.

Weapons

She does not carry any conventional weapons, she does not know how to shoot or had no desire to learn, she can't throw knives or punches, all because she doesn't need to. Her lab is her battlefield and the only weapons she needs there is her knowledge. If she does get into trouble however, she can often manipulate herself out of it, she is very good at that.

Skills

Aside from Estelle's intelligence, she can speak five languages (other than her native French) and these are English, Spanish, German, Russian and Standard Mandarin. She is also quite a talented cook, her mother was once a chef at a high end French restaurant in Paris and so Ella learnt a lot from her. Ella is a trained runner, she has great stamina and can run for long distance, she is also quite agile.

History

Estelle was born in Paris, France during the middle of an outrageously hot heat wave on the 31st May 1976. She was raised by her mother, Katherine as a single parent, she had been married to a man named Stephan, Estelle’s father, however he left not long before their child was born, apparently in order to ‘find himself,’ he was never seen by them again. From a early age it was evident that Estelle was different from her peers, her educational skills far suppressed those of other children in her class, by the age of seven she was doing work aged for children 13+. By the age of ten the school had truly done all they could for the young girl, it was clear that she needed a higher standard of schooling, her mother agreed and managed to get her daughter a scholarship to attend a prestigious private school in the UK. Estelle’s time at this school was conflicting, they offered her the education she needed to thrive, however she suffered terribly at the hands of bullies. The beginning of her mental illness has been sourced to this period in her life, she was tormented by other girls and developed a severe anxiety which lead to depression, Ella constantly wrote home to her mother begging for her to come and pick her up but her mother always believed her to be exaggerating, until she got that fateful call from the hospital saying that Ella had tried to commit suicide. After that Katherine brought her home to France. Life after that seemed to return to some normalcy; however it was clear that Estelle still carried some mental scars. As her high school years ended, Ella went to Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie, one of the best universities in France, where she studied Bio-Chemistry Science. After she graduated with high honours, she moved across the Atlantic and began Medical School, followed by research work at the Environmental Protection Agency; she was one of the first to learn about this new Virus sweeping across the globe and it was her and her teams job to prevent it. Unfortunately the world went to hell before they could make any real progress. She had travelled to the East Coast as she heard there were ships taking people back across the Atlantic, she wanted to return home to her mother, however she was intercepted and quarantined, once she was cleared of the infection, she was offered a job by the Legion to continue her work into finding a cure for this virus, she accepted.

Theme Song

Over the love || Florence and the Machine

Ever since I was a child,
I’ve turned it over in my mind.
I sang by that piano, tore my yellow dress and,
Cried and cried and cried.

And I don’t wanna see what I’ve seen,
To undo what has been done.
Turn off all the lights,
Let the morning come.

Now there’s green light in my eyes,
And my lover on my mind.
And I’ll sing from the piano, tear my yellow dress and,
Cry and cry and cry,
Over the love of you.

On this champagne, drunken hope,
Against the current, all alone,
Everybody, see, I love him.

‘Cause it’s a feeling that you get,
When the afternoon is set,
On a bridge into the city.

And I don’t wanna see what I’ve seen,
To undo what has been done.
Turn off all the lights,
Let the morning come.

Now there’s green light in my eyes,
And my lover on my mind.
And I’ll sing from the piano, tear my yellow dress and,
Cry and cry and cry.

‘Cause you’re a hard soul to save,
With an ocean in the way,
But I’ll get around it,
I’ll get around it.

‘Cause you’re a hard soul to save,
With an ocean in the way,
But I’ll get around it.

Now there’s green light in my eyes,
And my lover on my mind.
And I’ll sing from that piano, tear my yellow dress and,
Cry and cry and cry and,
Over the love of you.

Cry and cry and cry and,
Over the love of you.

Cry and cry and cry and,
(I can see the green light),
(I can see it in your eyes).

(I can see the green light),
(I can see it in your eyes).
Over the love of you.
Cry and cry and cry and cry.

(I can see the green light),
(I can see it in your eyes).
(I can see the green light),
(I can see it in your eyes).

I can see the green light,
I can see it in your eyes.
I can see the green light,
I can see it in your eyes.

I can see the green light,
I can see it in your eyes.
I can see the green light,
I can see it in your eyes.

I can see the green light,
I can see it in your eyes.
I can see the green light,
I can see it in your eyes.

Estelle had never been a particularly queasy woman, nothing had ever really made her stomach churn with a threatening bile rising in her throat, no smell, food or sight that she could remember had ever stirred such a reaction within the Doctor, however the thing on her table before her was coming close. Uncharacteristically, Estelle had winced as they brought in the stage one subject, he had looked almost normal to begin with, save for a rather large cold sore looking blister covering his top lip, he had been exactly what she had asked for but still it came as a shock just how human he still seemed.

Experiments had become a daily part of her routine; she and Dr Frasier had been tasked with finding a cure, a seemingly impossible task and yet one Estelle was committed to even if she died trying, she just could not fathom the thought of giving up. No those words had never been in her vocabulary and she sure as hell wasn’t going to start now. However it did seem that this virus was a incurable, antibiotic’s didn’t work, radiation therapy didn’t work, blood donations, everything that Estelle and Kurt could possibly think of seemed to have no reaction to the virus and that scared her. Of course she had always been taught to believe that there was a balance for everything, just not everything had been discovered yet and so with that thought she managed to hold onto hope of having a break through.

Of course another massive step forward would be knowledge on what they were actually dealing with, they knew the virus had stemmed from infected crops and the stages that the victim goes through, yet other than that not a great deal was known about this virus. It travelled through the bloodstream and affected the carrier’s brain along with their cell system, but the question was, which one of those did the fungus have presence over and which one was simply a side affect? Personally, Estelle believed that the neurological side of the virus was a side affect of the bacteria in the body, the spores and blisters pushing against the lobes of the brain affecting the behaviour of the person or the spores created a liquid around the brain causing it to swell, either way Estelle thought their main shot was trying to come up with some sort of anti-body to inject into the subject.

She had been at a loss of where to start, that was until she had read a book on diseases similar to the one they had been presented with and the first one, which had come to mind, was smallpox. Then she had read about the epidemic during the American Revolution and George Washington’s methods of containing and controlling the disease, one made her think.

Inoculation.

Maybe if she could purposely infect a person with the virus, in a controlled manner as to minimise the severity of the infection so their cells could have a chance to fight it off naturally, then they would be immune against further infections. It was risky but history had proved that it worked, but would it work on a virus so aggressive? That, she was not sure on and so instead of presenting her theory to one of the commanders or the president, she decided to do a few experiments on some early stage one subjects to see how it would work on them.

The result had been inconclusive to say the least, there was no evidence that the inoculation had any affect on the subject yet why would it? One a person who was already infected she was essentially just infecting him more, yet part of her had been curious to see what would happen, part of her had hoped that the existing virus and the newly introduced batch would fight each other, kill each other off but again there was no sign of that happening. The virus continued to ravish the man and in a moment of mercy Estelle had ordered him to be put down.

It was clear, the only way she could test her theory was on a live and uninfected subject. But could she purposely expose another human being to the virus, the answer was yes, she could honestly do anything to help produce this cure.
