♦Full Name:
Valentina Marie Russo-Greyback
♦Nicknames:
Val (Perferred) β€’ Lee (Liked) β€’ V or Vee(Neutral) β€’ Tina (Hated) β€’ Mutt (Despised)
♦Birthday:
August 16th (17 years old)
♦Gender:
Female
♦Sexuality:
Bisexual
♦Relationships:
Alistar Goode
Angel & Wizard genealogy, he has limited traits from both and mainly can conduct healing and benevolent magic and trickster magic after extensive training. However there can be a penalty incurred for Angel Wizard hybrids who practice trickster magic, they are more likely to lose their wings and become fallen angels or angels of darkness. Alistar was raised 100% in the Wizarding world and is extremely unfamiliar with the mortal world and is intrigued by it, especially Manhattan.
♦Habits:
Smoker β€’ Excessive\Inappropriate Magic Use
♦Ethnicity:
25% Mexican 25% Italian and 50% British European
(I'm guessing Mason would be the Father)
♦Languages:
Some Spanish, Fluent English, Increasingly Fluent Latin & ASL
♦Supernatural Race:
Wizard\ Witch with latent Werewolf characteristics
Although Val is the child of a wizard Mother and werewolf Father she seemingly only has the predominant traits of wizard. Val has found that her powers are at their most reckless potential and most potent when there's a full moon. She's also prone antsy and flighty behavior under the full moon, she often remedies this by going urban exploring or doing activities outside during the night. Strangely enough Val also has a abnormal internal temperature system for a mortal wizard because of the trace of werewolf genealogy in her. Val overheats very easily in the Summer if she doesn't hydrate well or use a charm to keep her cool and in the Winter she is rarely ever cold enough to need a real winter coat unless the temperature drops to 15 degrees Fahrenheit or below. The last defining feature Val has from her Lyncathrope side is the very localized vitiligo she has on the back of her neck in a small patch that runs into the hair on the nape of neck and makes it a very whiteish grey color. She's grown very comfortable with it and has no hesitation when it comes to wearing her hair up and showing off the white patch. She often gets lots of compliments and inquires on who did the dye job, but it's completely natural.

♦Declared Specialty:
Advanced Enchantments
Valentina had proven to be very gifted from childhood when it came to incantations and enchantments. She was actually a particularly hard child to raise because of her aptitude for creating magic without help from a channeling magical talisman like a wand. As a result of this Valentina is much more gifted with her hands and mind that she has ever been with a wand or any other tool. Although she has a burgundy stained Acacia Koa wand with a ovaline cut diamond (talismanic stone) on top with her zodiac sign carved into it (Leo) that she cherishes deeply she doesn't use it unless she has to or for simple or less powerful spells for fear of exploding the wand like she did with countless others after failing at trying to steadily redirect her power through the medium. As a senior Val is pretty recognized in her school both in a positive and negative light for her aptitude for enchantments, she often is one of the liaisons that introduces the specialization to the incoming freshman classes when it's time for them to decide which specialty they will pursue in Wiztech. She's also pretty well known for being the daughter of THE Alexandra Magarita Russo, defender of the world and a legendary witch in a family with two family wizards in the same generation. Enchanters tend to make the most successful full wizards but they also are more likely to using their magic for evil or self serving purposes.

♦Style:
♦♦Valentina can almost always be found in earth tones, especially dark leafy greens, sandy browns, black, white and other saturated and darker tones. The worst thing you could buy Val to wear for a regular night on the town are neons, urban-wear or over the top graphic tshirts. She likes to keep it simple and keep herself on her toes by incorporating her favorite pieces from each fashion trend into her wardrobe so that she can strip it down and make it her own.

Val would cite her staples pieces as her black low top converse, her black oxford boots, a hair tie, any trench coat or sweater and her vegan leather backpack. A lot of the jewelry Val wears are made out of precious gems such as peridot, sapphire and diamond because of her interest in the antiquated practice of wizardry and witchcraft, but also because of their magical properties and aesthetically pleasing appearances. Valentina also like to reincorporate pieces from her Mother's youth into her wardrobe, mostly her senior year and college items because of their more subtle color schemes, for the most part however Valentina and her Mother's style are vastly different.
♦Height:
5'7 without shoes
♦Weight:
137lbs
♦Build:
Slim & toned
♦Appearance:
♦♦Valentina, like her Mother has long thick dark brown hair that she often cuts to shoulder length in her signature shoulder length waves as well as also inheriting her olive skin tone from her Mother. From her father she inherited her hazel eyes, dimples and defined jawline. Valentina stands at 5'7 without her trusty arsenal of heeled boots and atypical high heels and with her heeled boots or unique high heels she stands at anywhere between 5'8-6'2 depending on how drastic the heel. Val is very toned, she has subtly defined musculature because, unlike her Mother but very like her Father she keeps fit by doing outdoor activities that use the natural range of her body like hiking, running and more. She also dabbles in yoga from time to time.

Sarcastic ❖ Leader ❖ Adventurous
Passionate ❖ Fearless ❖ Irritable

♦Personality:
Much like her Mother Val is very sarcastic and comedic person, she's a leader in her own right, she's driven undeniably by passion, fear rarely ever creeps into her vocabulary and her Achilles heel is how irritable she can become in the blink of an eye, especially when it comes to petty school drama or missing her stop after falling asleep on the subway or even just messing up a spell. A big challenge for her is keeping her emotions from swinging too far in any direction especially in the direction of destructive emotions because that often impacts her spell casting in unexpected ways. Thanks to being raised by one of the snarkiest women ever to have existed Val is a pro when it comes to biting humor, she's often too proficient in it and come off as mean or cold because of her dry and quick jabs. Because of this Val has a rather small friend group, but as a result Val trusts that those who have thick enough skin to tolerate her jokes will be there for life. This sarcasm and humor however is slightly offset by Valentina's propensity to effortlessly fill leadership positions, she’s charming, know what she wants out of life and has great vision especially when there’s a creative task at hand, but she does have a hard time not being too bossy once she’s been given the talking stick and that can sometimes foil her efforts to get people do to what she wants.

♦Hobbies:
Val, much like her parents is very artistically inclined. This artistic expression comes through in her unique approach to enchantments and spell casting as well as in her hobby of singing and her passion in mixed media drawing. After her time at Wiztech Val intends to apply to one of the many prestigious art schools in NYC such as Tisch, The Fashion Institute of Technology or NYU to pursue a degree in digital\ mixed media art or fashion and design. Another hobby of Vals, despite how contrary it seems to most who meet is that she used to be a cheerleader in middle school until her second year when she left to attend Wiztech as a full time student instead of just studying there during summer breaks when mortal schools go on summer vacation. Lastly, Val is really big on fitness especially cardio and low rep workouts and since she is no longer cheering since she was pulled out of mortal school in favor of home schooling and full time enrollment in Wiztech she does yoga occasionally to keep fit or a bit of urban exploring or even β€œhiking” or running in Central Park, if she shirks her fitness regime for too long she gets noticeably irritable.

:

Re-Cap

Valentina's story starts with the epic and rather unlikely life story up until this points of the Russo family and the last generation of kids which included her Mother Alex Russo, her Uncle Justin and her Uncle Max. While the Russos surely weren't the first they were however the first in decades to have two family wizards in one generation. Val's Mother, Alex won her family's Wizard competition over her brothers and they were subsequently stripped of their powers. Her Uncle Max now lives a completely mortal but still far from normal life and owns the family substation, while her Uncle Justin became the youngest headmaster of Wiztech at 21 years old when he had his powers reinstated by Headmaster Crumbs in order to assume the position. A year after the Russo’s Wizard competition Alex Russo faced on last battle with none other than herself and prevailed.

The Future Unfolds

A year after Alex’s last magical battle Alex and Mason took a gap year from their studies at Columbia University as respective Fine Art and International Relations majors to take a much deserved holiday in Tuscany Italy in a location nearby where they met Jerry’s side of the family for the first time. Shortly after at 21 years old Alex became pregnant with her daughter Valentina and moved back to NYC with Mason. Mason went on to complete his degree and worked in the United Nations Headquarters in NYC and Alex finished her second year of school before dropping out for good and opening up her own painting studio in NYC that is a Alex Russo take on wine and painting in their new home of Hell's Kitchen New York, NY, a few stops away from the substation in the TriBeCa section of New York.

Passing The Baton

Similarly to her Mother Val grew up in peculiar yet extremely compelling circumstances like her Mother for having been raised in NYC and being a wizard. Unlike her Mother however Val never had to worry about having to one up anyone but herself because she was an only child. Which meant that she would never have to fight for her powers in a Wizard Competition as long as her parents didn’t make her a big sister, which in many ways she selfishly hoped would not be the case. Despite this however Val always had an inquisitive streak to her when it came to her magical studies and became a pretty proficient wizard for her age with the help of her Mom, Grandfather Jerry and of course Wiztech. All this magical training and her dropping out of traditional mortal school made her grow up geared towards a more magic based lifestyle than a mortal one. She uses magic for even basic tasks, something her Mother was discouraged from doing, and still has a hard time breaking away from today because of habit.

Straddled between the two worlds Val realizes the value in being successful in both but ultimately wants to transition into living in the Wizard World as opposed to her home of New York, she sneaks out frequently to visit her boyfriend’s family home and is encouraged by his parents to visit as often as she likes despite knowing that her parents are mostly unaware and not particularly okay with her forfeiting so much of her mortal life. Her boyfriend Alistar’s parents are separatists and believe that magics and non magics should be separated and gently try to guide Val to see the value in their beliefs. To Val at the tender age of 17 it all seems innocent but her parents see it as more sinister. Having become very accustomed to the fame and infamy of being a Russo-Greyback Alex and Mason are familiar with people trying to get into their good graces to benefit from the legacy, and even plotting to take them down- which is a big part of why they live in the mortal world and not in the wizard world. Alex and Mason also disagree with some of the rituals of the Wizard world that differ greatly from the ones they’re used to, there’s also a stigma against Werewolves in the wizarding world that have slurs attached like Mutt.

The Present

Presently Valentina is a senior high school level student at Wiztech, she boards there for free being that he Uncle is the Headmaster and she bounces between there and her parent's warehouse home in Hell's Kitchen. Valentina works as a mentor and adviser of sorts to freshman and as her senior thesis is working on creating a new enchantment that invoke the assistance of ones guardian angel in the form of direct white light power.

ImageImage Valentina, with a deep breath and a flick of her wand disappeared in a burst of dark green energy that burst forth like a smoke bomb and retracted into the void before bathing her vicinity in a faint green light as she reappeared at the door that led to the balcony of her family's converted warehouse. A white light emitted from the door as soon as her hand touched the handle, her magical line was the passcode, and the door would open only for members of the Russo lineage by blood, with a few exceptions some being her Dad, and her Uncle's wife Juliet.

Val stepped beyond the threshold and into the family's magical den, it was neutral space that always smelled like sage and a hint of lavender . The walls were as white and sterile as a hospital room and the floors were made of a ash grey weave of thick planks. Everything visible to the eye in the room was monochrome right down to the trinkets, books and candles except for a portal in the right most corner of the room that was emitting every shade of visible light in the spectrum, signifying there was mail to be received mail from someone somewhere on the other side of that door. Curiously Val crossed the room and opened the door that in turn spit out a stately looking royal blue envelope with a gold seal in the middle stamped with an ornate W in curlicue script. She knew instantly that it was Wiztech, and more specifically her Uncle Justin, but beyond that she couldn't imagine what would warrant mail this late into a Sunday evening. She unsealed the envelope and watched the parchment paper come to life as a moving graphic of Justin moved on the page before her.
Image
Val listened as the pre recorded and over used greeting played that gave a brief explanation of Wiztech's history and introduced her Uncle as being the 72nd Headmaster of Wiztech and the youngest of the brave, tenacious and bold wizards who came before him.

When the pre-recorded speech was done the apparition flashed white revealing a real time video message of her Uncle looking at her with rather grim and pitying eyes. She always found him the easiest of their family members to read, and the also the best person to go to if she was looking sympathy and a hope of evading punishments doled out by her Mother.

"Hey Uncle Justin, what's going on? Is everything okay at Wiztech did something happen to Abuela and Pop?" Val asked starting slowly to panic, the whole nature of the call was suspicious and the look of steeped sorrow on Justin's face didn't make her nerves any less wrecked.
"Everything is fine here, Theresa and Jerry are fine, don't worry too much, it's uh- just academic." Justin said waveringly as he grabbed for a document on his desk.
"It appears that uh, some members of my council brought a very sensitive issue that directly impacts the family, to a vote and there was not much I could do, my hands were tied- conflict on interests and such-"
"You're stalling Uncle J, just tell it to me straight, whatever it is we'll handle it. We're Russos, that's what we do."
"Okay well as the decision currently stands, every member of the Russo family born after your Mother Max and I must compete against each other to win the title of Family Wizard."
"What... what does that mean? That can't possibly be as batshit as it just sounded!" V exclaimed incredulously, she felt her hands start to shake already as the news began to settle uncomfortably into her mind. She stuck her hands firmly in her pockets waiting for the next wave of bad news.
"Hey, listen kiddo I'm just as astounded by this as you are, but you have to stay level headed. It came to a vote and won by a slight majority with Chancellor Rootie Tootietootie as the tie breaker. I had no say in the decision at all, but that's how it goes, and there's always a designated way around a problem, we're going to get to the bottom of this as a family. Don't you worry.""
"And if we don't?" Val inquired with a raised brow and a deathly unamused scowl on her face.
"Then you Sophie and the others will battle it out just like me your Mother and Max did and like Kelbo Meg and your Pop did before us. It's tradition, I believe you guys can do it."
"That's not a pretty reassuring track record. Both you and Mom got to keep your powers, if tradition was kept one of your lives would have been very different, and Pop, Uncle Kelbo and Aunt Meg haven't spoken for years to this very day. That doesn't sound like some fun family tradition to me."
"Maybe it'll be different this time, you kids will get it right. I've seen you at work, you have as good a shot at this as anyone."
"And maybe we won't. I can't hear anymore of this, I'm going for a walk on the other side of the portal to clear my thoughts because apparently starting right now my days as a wizard are numbered." Val sighed simmering on the situation even as her Uncle spoke directly to her. The prospect of losing her powers was never something she ever even entertained for the sheer fact that she was an only child and had practically got her parents to swear on everything that they loved that she'd be the first and last addition to the family unless of course they were willing to adopt a familiar of some kind.
"Val you don't have to be rash or do this alone I am here for your, your Mother is here for you as well, even your Aunt Meg would help you if you needed advice or tactics. We've all done it before." Justin assure her, but reason was the farthest thing from her mind in the moment that was brewing into a biggest storm that was like overcast clouding any thought processes other than the ones that told her this wasn't happening.

"Thanks Uncle J, but I think I've got this on my own. I have to handle it my own way. I'll see you tomorrow at school." As soon as the last word vibrated off of her lips Val reached for the letter and crumpled it tightly before tossing it into the waste bin. She shook her head furiously as she paced the floor back and forth. "Is this actually happening right now...? she thought as she went in circles until she was dizzy and itching for a bigger space to run free and burn her nervous entry. She looked to the portal with a eagerness to just go. She grabbed the door and stepped through, no looking behind her. She was heading for Wiztech, maybe her cousin Sophia would know something more about this, after all she was the Headmaster's kid, it did come with its own set of perks.

Two weeks before, her father sent the news to the rest of his siblings, Sophia was alone, practicing for her upcoming wand technique exam in her dorm room. "Ahh, The young, Mrs. Russo!...I thought I'd never have to say those words again.." Chancellor Rootie Tootietootie muttered as he thought about the times he called Sophia's aunt that. With a flick of his wand, he finished materializing into her room.

"Chancellor Rootie Tootietootie!" Sophia asked surprised, quickly turning around to hide her copy of the Forbidden Spell Book underneath a pile of used workbooks. She placed her light blue wand down on top and looked at the Chancellor. "What brings you here?"

You know, this and that! In fact, I actually came to visit your father, Justin. Is he around? Rootie Tootietootie asked as he looked around her room suspiciously. His hands on his hips underneath his robe, and his feet dragging along the wood floor.

"My dad...?" She thought about it for a bit. "I think he's a bit busy right now, helping one of our new teachers set up the Abrakadoodler in her classroom. Can I take a message?"

"No, no, it's fine. It's a matter I must speak with him in private about. You know, full wizard stuff..."

"Full wizard stuff? Shouldn't I know then? Obviously, I'm going to be the Family Wizard since I'm really only competing with myself..." Sophia replied with a small shrug and a slight giggle. Who else was going to take on full powers? She, like her cousin Val, was an only child.

"Sure you are sweetie..." He answered. Yet, Sophia knew something was brewing. It was something in the way Chancellor Rootie Tootietootie sarcastically spoke to her. "Look, I'm just going to go find your father, don't worry about anything...."

Reluctantly, Sophia nodded and let the Chancellor be on his way, watching him take out his wand and flash out to see her father. Moments after he left the room, she turned back around, grabbed her wand and headed out the door. She knew exactly where her father was, and she knew that something was going to happen. Something big and life changing. She crept silently through the halls of WizTech and placed her right ear up to a small door leading into the classroom her father was in.

"But...see....why..." She heard her father, Justin mumble, but the words were too soft and mushed together. She couldn't compile a complete sentence.

"....Just....it.....easy..." She heard the Chancellor say.

Sophia sighed. "Some people are a gem, some people are a rat, to learn who's who, give me the ear of a bat" She whispered as he flicked her index finger around her head in a circle. Suddenly, her right ear turned black and grew a pointed tip. She continued to listen through the door. This time everything was much clearer.

"I'm sorry, Justin. It was a hard decision and a close one, but ultimately it made sense for me to vote in favor of it." The Chancelllor said.

"But that doens't mean it was right! They want to keep the family magic within one family then sure, fine, take mine and then Alex is the only Russo in my generation with magic and the rules are followed. Just please, leave the kids out of it!" Her father said.

"Rules are rules. You were the exception, now don't abuse it."

"I understand." Justin sighed.

Sophia's face grew long as she pieced the two together. She was going to have to compete for her powers? The competition her father warned her about, the life changing moment that all depended on her knowledge of magic. She knew this day would possibly come as she overheard her parents discussing the possibility of more children, however, she didn't think that this is how and or why it would happen.

Shocked by the news she opened the door and entered the room. "Dad, is this true? How long have you known that I would have to compete?" She asked, frustrated that her father would keep something like this from her. There was no secrets in the Russo household.

"Sophie...It's been in discussion ever since you all were born. You, Val, and your uncle Max's kids...we never thought..." Justin started as he approached her.

Sophia backed away and shook her head.

"Sophia-" Justin said again, this time in a softer tone, as if he was going to explain it to her calmly.

"Young Mrs. Russo, I'm afraid so....though to be fair, at first we didn't think that this would go through..." The Chancellor sighed. "The test is set to take place in two years. Now, of course that date can be changed by the leading wizard in the family. But since we don't know who that is yet, unfortunately, you all must go through a preliminary test..."

"Sophia..." Justin tried to say again, trying to calm her down.

Sophia shook her head and backed away again. With a single deep breath, she looked at both her father and Chancellor Rootie Tootietootie. She knew getting upset would get her nowhere, and in times like this, she had to the be the strong independent leader she wants to be. "Okay then. If I'm going to compete, I want a fair game. Uncle Max's side of the family will be invited to study here at WizTech for those two years. And Val is already here. That way they can't be complaining about this not being fair when I win..." She said.

With three heavy handed knocks Valentina reined her closed fist down on Sophie's door, shaking the door frame in the process. She waited patiently for all of one second before cupping her hands around the handle and moved in a wispy semi circular motion channeling her magic slowly and with fierce concentration to her hands, letting out a low humming tone as she brewed the chain of words for a impromptu spell in her mind.

"Incantare, reserare, remove the barrier before me." The tumbler in the lock clicked lightly before the door swung open a bit more forcefully than intended causing it to collide with wall with a heavy thud.

"Shit, sorry Soph I've got to work on that. But, in more pressing news I think you have a practical joke you need to let me in on immediately. Your Dad sent a letter through the portal on official Wiztech letter head talking about a wizard competition and some kind of preliminary exam? What in the hell is going on?" Val rambled on with her arms crossed firmly around her chest as she stood barely a few paces into the room, neglecting to close the door behind her.

"This isn't like, set in stone is it? Your Dad is fighting this right?" Val could feel the panic rise with each revolution around the idea that she made, what was so scary to her about going head to head for the title of family wizard, the competitiveness in her in any other situation would have excitement practically coursing through her veins but now that she looked her cousin, 2 years her minor she knew it was because she actually felt challenged, and extremely so if she was to be completely honest. Arguably Justin was the most scholastic and gifted wizard in the Russo family, and definitely one of the greatest of all time. Training under him was a privilege most young wizards would literally give an arm for it asked of them, and Sophie had him wrapped around her finger and at her disposal. Despite this Val knew that her Mother was also the mentor of a lifetime, just let her daughter she casted with heart making every spell all the more volatile and potentially more successful and potent than otherwise thought possible. You couldn't learn to cast that way, you either had it or you didn't and Val most definitely had that trait on lock. The whole scenario made her uneasy and unsure of herself, but she resolved to know one thing for absolute truth she would most definitely prove herself in the preliminary exams to Sophie and to everyone. She was determined to win.

As the hard knocks hit the wood of her dorm room door, Sophia once again hid her copy of the Forbidden Book of Spells, this time underneath a pile of dirty laundry she hadn't sent for cleaning yet. "One minute!" She screamed as Valentina's spell threw the door open.

"What part of one minute did you not understand?" Sophie asked. She ran over to the door to make sure the woodwork was not damaged. She sighed and brushed off the spot where the handle hit the wall.

"Oh...that..." Soph sighed as she heard her cousin ramble on about the previous events. She looked away from her cousin, who obviously was taken with strife about this, and continued one with her practicing.

"This isn't like, set in stone is it? Your Dad is fighting this right?" Val asked in a panic.

"He's trying the best he can." She flicked her wand and waved it up slightly. Without saying any spell she managed to take water out of the glass and make it levitate. As her wand moved up so did the water bubble. As her wand moved down, so did the water. She sighed again and stopped bobbing the water up and down. "Trust me, I wish it was a joke too, but when I heard the Chancellor speak to my dad, they both seemed really serious about this." Sophia glanced back at her cousin, the daughter of infamous Alex Russo, Wizard of the Year, defender of Earth and Magic, the true winner of the previous Russo Family Wizard Competition. There was much to be jealous about. Valentina grew up in both worlds, she knew street smarts and was naturally talented in the magic arts, she was beautiful and had a boyfriend to support her. What did Sophia have? A powerful dad? Even with that, following as the only child of Justin Russo was too much to live up to and too much to work for. She wished she could tell Valentina how much she wished they didn't have to compete with each other, to tell her how much she looked up to her and envied her. But she knew this was not the time. Becoming sentimental would only make her fearful that she wouldn't win. Thoughts like that are like plagues of the mind, ones that infect and spread and ensure one does not survive. Sophia had to survive and make her family, her dad, proud.

"But, Val, it's not just a one-way street here. We want this competition canceled, we all need to work towards changing their minds." She added. She twirled her wand and the water floated back down and into the glass on the desk. "Look, Uncle Max is bringing his kids up to the school soon, and I think Aunt Alex is coming too, right? Maybe if everyone sits down with the Wizard Council and we show them we are all worth full powers, they'll consider it." She smiled back. "Plus, We're Russos. If anyone was to be deemed the "Good at finding loopholes Champion", it would be us!"

  1. Binding- Typically, a magical binding is simply a spell or working that restrains someone metaphysically, preventing them from doing something. It is often used to keep the individual from causing harm to themselves or to others.

Valentina watched as her cousin confidently manipulated and channeled her power through her wand causing an orb of water to bob up and down in mid air separate from the contents of the glass where it came from. She was calm and cool, and demonstrated focus enough to follow through with the spell without incident. Val made sure to cite that as a skill she needed to perfect in the mean time if she intended to be able to go toe to toe with her cousins in battle if by some odd stroke of luck the competition couldn't be called off, but she knew how persuasive her family was, especially her Mom who Valentina thought, in some alternate reality would make a stellar lawyer.

With a crisp sigh Val nodded her head feeling mostly reassured that the ordeal would be put squarely behind them when a family meeting was called into order. She'd get to go back to her mostly unchallenged life, only worrying about graduating and staking her claim in the world, and that was just how she liked it.

"You know what Soph, you're right. It's water under the proverbial bridge. It'll be as good as over by the morning." With that notion planted firmly in her mind Val cooly shut the door behind her and plopped down on the floor next to Sophie but recoiled sharply as her leg made contact with the edge of something pointed. She looked up at her cousin with skeptical eyes as she pushed past the laundry burying the mysterious item.

"Keeping secrets are we?" Valentina teased as she palmed the archaic looking book between her fingers, not realizing it as anything special at first, but the more she analyzed the more astounded she way both at the presence of the relic and the moxie of her little cousin to be studying from it.

"How did you get your hands on this treasure? I've heard of this in stories but Mom binded me from being able to use any location magic to find this a long time ago; it's a long story. But here you are casually with in your dorm room, I'm a bit envious and equal parts impressed. Maybe you have a rebellious streak in you after all..." Val thumbed through the pages curiously, eyes wide open at the magnitude of power trapped between the pages. "This gives me an idea. A really genius and slightly ill advised idea if i do say so myself, but emphasis on the genius part. We could make this meeting go a lot smoother with a little magic to make the proposal more... compelling." Val spoke in a sing songy voice as she flipped to the index. She was staring to understand why she was never allowed to get her hands on the book, she was definitely a slave to curiosity despite the abbreviated saying Curiosity killed the Cat, Valentina and any real adventure chaser knew that satisfaction brought it back.

Val thumbed through the pages curiously, eyes wide open at the magnitude of power trapped between the pages.

Sophie jumped for the book, trying to grab it from Valentina's hands, but ultimately failing at every attempt to do so. "Don't tell my dad!" She said in defense. She took a breath to calm herself down. "Look, I may have...possibly... sneaked into the Grandpa's Old lab in the back of Uncle Max's Sub Shop and used some convenient divination charms to find out where our parents were hiding it...But for good reason though!....Okay, so maybe it was for the compulsion spell...but still!" She rambled, trying to defend herself by stating her reasoning to her cousin, who seemed more interested in the contents of the spell book than her alibi. "...You're not going to tell, right?"

"This gives me an idea. A really genius and slightly ill advised idea if i do say so myself, but emphasis on the genius part. We could make this meeting go a lot smoother with a little magic to make the proposal more... compelling."

"No way, Val! That spell has a mind of its own!" She added, trying in one last attempt to get the book back. "Besides, it wears off in a matter of seconds if not performed right..." She sighed. "...learned that the hard way..." She muttered quietly to herself. "And we don't even have the family wand...We'd never have enough power..."

Sophie crossed her arms and watched as Val continued to flip through the book. She thought about what her cousin said, about using magic to make the meeting go easier. "Wait! She shouted as another idea entered her mind. "We need to get back into Uncle Max's Lab"

"We need to get back into Uncle Max's Lab." Sophia spoke in a much different tone than she held less than a minute before when she shot down Val's lofty proposal. Val assessed the girl with a raised eyebrow, but thought better of questioning her to hard for fear that she'd retreat on whatever insidious plan she had brewing at the forefront of her mind. Sometimes gutsy moves were better left unspoken, and Val knew that better than anyone. She'd be a way different person if she took more time to speak her half baked plans into existence, but she regretted nothing. It was a fun and spontaneous way to be and it kept her entertained and ambitious.

"I've been here for all of 10 minutes and I feel like I'm rubbing off on you already little cousin. You make me so proud." Val plastered a overdramatic Proud Mom look on her face before handing the book off to Sophia and grabbing for her wand from her wing tipped designer boots. "I hope you're ready, there's no time like the present!" She said with a grin as she grabbed her cousins hand and waved the wand around the two of them causing the room to be bathed in a ethereal green light the color of absinthe.

With a violent jolt the duo reappeared in the alleyway adjacent to the substation. Not quite where Val had intended, her radius was meant to fall within the lair, but she kept that little fact to herself. Upon landing Val grasped for the nearest wall for to re steady herself after the rather unsteady landing. Dusting herself off Valentina looked back to check on Sophie who she imagined was probably judging her for messing up such a simple spell.

"Sorry Soph, I really need to work on my wand work." Val motioned for Sophia to follow her a ways down the block and, with another, more calculated flash of her wand the two were inside the closed shop, facing the door to the lair. The Sub-Station looked the same as it always did in it's refurbished 50's subway car glamour. Val was no stranger to her family's restaurant she visited on many weekends with her parents to grab breakfast and catch up with her Uncle and cousins and she was even forced to work their for a few Summer's before she made it very clear to her family and the patrons that fine Summer day that she thoroughly hated her cousin Nico when she very thoughtfully punched him square in the nose for making pointed comments about her, and calling her a mutt for her partially lyncathrope genetics. They'd never really said more than a few words to each other since, and now that he would be returning to Wiztech and she was technically burglarizing his house that whole sore topic likely would have to be addressed.

"Let's hope everyone's asleep; Especially Nick." Val whispered as she made a gagging face and waited for Sophia to make the next move.

Sophia's arms jerked trying to find balance as her cousin flashed them into the old lab. "Let's hope everyone's asleep; Especially Nick."

"You could have used a bit more stabilization on the landing there, Val....try keeping your wand at a higher angle.....however, we're here none the less." Sophia replied, looking around cautiously making sure no one was in the room with them. She too looked around for their cousin, who seemed to not be in the room at the moment. She pulled out her wand and with it, outlines the door of the freezer, opening the secret door to the lab. She pushed the door open and the two were in.

Sophia wasn't totally okay with breaking into her cousin's home, and she knew Val would be all over this "rebel' side of her, however, the item she needed to find was worth the risk. "Wow, Uncle Max really hasn't changed this place..." She said, looking at all the old magical antiques and the red couches which were lined in a semi circle. She snooped around for the family wand. "Well, don't just stand there, Val. Aren't you going to try to find things that could help us?

Soph made her way over to the locked wand box which almost seemed to give off a magical silver glow. She tried opening it, but it didn't budge. She tried again, this time with some magical enhancements to help her along the way. The box gave off a red flashing light, and a beep that seemed to get faster and faster with every minute. "You know how you said you didn't want Nico to find us.....well, I might have accidentally triggered his spell lock..... She handed over the box to Val and shrugged.

With quick light strides Val and Sophia inched closer to the lair that was a time capsule of her parents and grandfathers childhoods. The restaurant has been in the family for three generations now, but despite that and the decades that rolled by the Substation and the family lair was always, for the most part the same as it ever was and probably ever would be. Val watched from a distance as her cousin traced the outline of the lair door with her wand giving way to the hidden gem behind it. Val sauntered around the shop, weaving in and out of the subway cart that housed the more private booths. There were years worth of carvings and sketches on one of the tables on the wall. Things like Max was here, A&M Forever, and the formula for quadratic equation which Val safely assumed was the doing of her Uncle Justin. When the door was finally opened Val made her way behind Sophia into the lair and surveyed the room from her perch, leaned against the door frame.

"Wow, Uncle Max really hasn't changed this place..." Sophia spoke as she searched around the room for God knows what. Val watched as she rummaged through piles and stacks, every so often lifting a container or box that would posses what she came for. She grabbed at slender, rectangular boxes of all colors and sizes. The family wand... huh... Val smirked with a proud and smug look plastered all over her face. I knew my idea was genius.

"Well, don't just stand there, Val. Aren't you going to try to find things that could help us?" Val sighed deeply and pushed herself off of the door frame and sauntered over the middle of the room, choosing her point of attack carefully. Preparing for a tedious process Val pulled her hair up in a high messy bun with loose strands framing her face and exposing the greyish vitiligo patch on the hairs at the nape of her neck. Val reached for a miniature chest under set under the coffee table but as soon as she did a horrible screeching filled the room and seemed to be getting faster and more intense every few seconds.

"Soph what did you just do?" Val spoke as she snaked her neck around slowly to see what was happening behind her wishfully believing that if she somehow stayed calm the situation would rectify itself without any outside intervention. Sophie simply shrugged as she lobbed the box off on her that was now flashing on top of screeching incessantly.

"You know how you said you didn't want Nico to find us.....well, I might have accidentally triggered his spell lock....." Val tensed and shot Soph a scowl that could kill. Setting the box on the table Val flicked her fingers and pushed the air forcefully and spoke strongly, commanding her magic to bend effortlessly to her will.

"Silentium. Immediately the light vanished and the noise ceased. This was her strong suit, but despite this they would still caught absolutely red handed if they didn't make the hastiest exits of their life. "That's handled, but I'm sure he's already realized someones been tampering with his things. God, what kind of psycho booby traps their own house! Ugh, we've got to get the hell out of here" Quickly Val armed herself with her wand but before she could complete the spell to teleport back to Wiztech the door to the lair blew open as if the room had been caught momentarily in a gusty draft. The gust of air threw Val back full forced and landed her squarely on the floor with her wand tumbling halfway across the room.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Not so fast Valentine." Nico with a wry chuckle as he crossed the threshold into the lair and closed the door behind him. As he caught sight of Sophia his wry laugh turned a bit more boisterous. "Oh, this is rich, little miss headmaster is here too? The look on your Dad's face is going to be priceless when he hears about this."

"A. It's Val-en-TINA, and B. How'd you know it was me?" Val kept her eyes glued to Nico as she shot him daggers. She brushed herself off lightly before hopping to her feet and reaching for her wand but not before Nico used his to form a gust of wind that landed it squarely in his hand.

"You're the obvious culprit, this has Val written all over it in marquee lights. And, you won't need that, I'll just hold onto it for safe keeping. There's no way I'm letting you two get out of here before I can rat you out.

"Yeah, well you'll be surprised to know breaking in here wasn't even my idea." As soon as Val uttered the words she regretted it. She didn't mean to rat Sophia out, but damn if she didn't love proving Nico wrong. "And besides if you tell our parents you're going to regret it. And that's a promise by the way, not a threat. If you really think you have a chance in this competition you're delusional. If you help us get what we need we can all get what we want and go our separate ways after, like it never happened. Val watched with utter satisfaction as Nico visibly seemed to be trying to grasp the idea in his head. He was stumped but would never admit it. He doesn't know about the competition... that's no surprise he's such a hot head Uncle Max would probably tell Casey before Nicolas.

"See, you're lost without us Nico. The rules have changed all we all have to compete against each other to keep our powers, but Soph and I have a plan to make sure that doesn't happen, and we just need one thing that you know how to find. The family wand."

"Oh, this is rich, little miss headmaster is here too? The look on your Dad's face is going to be priceless when he hears about this." Nico said. Sophia could feel a fight between her cousins starting to brew

Sophia slowly started to back away, hiding her face from his view. "PLEASE DONT TELL MY DAD! She shouted in panic. "If he finds out I left school grounds, I'm dead." She muttered under her breath.

"Yeah, well you'll be surprised to know breaking in here wasn't even my idea." Val said.

Sophia sighed and looked away from Nico with the look of disappointment on her face. She shrugged her shoulders again. "Yeah, It might have been...possibly...oh i don't know....may have been....my doing..." She sheepishly admitted as the blood vessels on her cheeks started popping, turning her face bright red from embarrassment. How could she, the goodie-goodie of the Russo family have the idea to do something as rebellious as breaking in? The idea of losing her magic was starting to turn her into...her cousins.

Along with the wand Nico took from Val, so went Sophia's plans of keeping her powers. Taking several deep breaths to calm herself down, she began to interpret what was going on. As they both spoke, she could tell that Nico wasn't informed of the rule change yet.

"Nic, you didn't know? My dad sent the message out several days ago. It hasn't come in yet?"

"NICK! BREAKING NEWS!" Casey ran in screaming. "UNCLE JUSTIN IS OUT TO GET US!" He screamed as he pulled out the same message Val got not so long ago. "He's making us compete against...them..." He turned and looked at Sophia and Valentina. "Can you believe this? It was on the kitchen fridge this whole time, under the watermelon magnet!" He sighed. "If only I looked on the door sooner..."

"Wait a minute! My dad is not out to get you." Sophia said in defense. "In fact, he was the first one trying to stop this thing from even happening. So don't you dare say that he did this!" She scowled at the boy. She turned to Nico. "And you, no 'Hello Sophia, how nice to see you?' or a 'Sorry I didn't send you a birthday card this year, but Happy Late Birthday? or just a simple 'hi'? You just go right to accusing people." She took another deep breath. "Look, we all need that wand, but I think I might know a way to break it up into fours, so that when we are all tested for preliminary placement, we can show them that we don't need the Family competition, and that we all are worthy of keeping our powers. Are you in?" She said sincerely at the boys.

ImageImageSpringing off the floor Valentina took long and quick steps until she was face to face with Nico.

"I'll be taking that back thank you very much." She said as she snatched her wand out of his hands, gave a friendly nod to her younger cousin Casey in the process and retreated to where Sophia stood. She wasn't so sure about this alliance they were forging with the two parties fastened stubbornly on either side of the lair, it felt like two warring hemispheres facing off, but it seemed to be their only viable choice. Scanning the divide Val watched as Nicolas moodily shifted his gaze and huffed at the current state of affairs, in which Valentina felt that her and Sophia had the upper hand.

"So, if we're really doing this. We have to communicate with each other. Like, really communicate. So let's start off with someone communicating where the hell the family wand is so we can get back to Wiztech before someone realizes we left campus. Curfew on Sunday starts at 8- I'm surprised I knew that."

"Okay, fine. I won't keep you here any longer than you need to be that's for sure." Nico said as he inched forward and swiped his lock box off of the center table. With a flick of his wand the box burst open with a flash of red light and revealed the contents to him. Whimsically a photo floated down from the box and onto the lair floor. Nico snatched it up quickly and tucked it safely into his back right pocket, but not before anyone who was paying close enough attention could see it. It was a photo of the whole family, but more specifically his Mom from a family reunion that was at least a decade behind them now. Val looked up solemnly at Nico but he kept his eyes cast sternly on the other contents of the box without saying a word, but his face gave him away even if only slightly.

"Years ago, my Dad gave me these, just in case of emergency. If for whatever reason something happened and we had to fend for ourselves." Nico beckoned they all come closer and handed them each a metallic looking cylindrical crystal modifier.

"Put these on your wands and supposedly it'll be almost as good as having the family wand. And whatever we can't do with these, we can use them to find the real thing. The only thing is that we have to cast together or it won't work." He said, explaining to the girls. Nico pulled out his wand, it was a long slender polished black instrument that was ribbed at the handles end and sleek and skinny at the end. At the tip the wand was wrapped with a silver wire and caged a smoky black crystal. Nico slide the apparatus onto his wand to demonstrate and closed his lock box and reset the spell before returning it to it's original resting place.

Nico looked at Casey briefly before he took the letter out of his hands and gave it a once over for the first time. Nico wasn't all too worried about himself, he didn't have formal training like the others but, if all else failed tonight he would be attending Wiztech like the rest and he had all the moxie it took to be a strong elemental wizard. But, he feared for Casey. The boy was bright, and just as capable as anyone one of them, but one well kept secret that Nico guarded with his heart is that he never planned to win the wizard competition between him and his Brother. He loved having magic, it made his life more interesting and it leveled the playing field between him and all the overachievers of the world, but his magic couldn't help him save his Mom, and if anything ever happened to his Brother and he was left mortal and defenseless he couldn't stand to live with himself. He'd made his decision about a year ago, and had even came to terms with it, but now... everything was different and he felt defenseless and he hated it. No matter how much he hated having leverage paraded over his head, he'd grin and bear it long enough to get his Brother in the clear.

Casey pulled out his wand from the back pocket of his freshly pressed slacks. It was white wood based with a thin pliable red wire twirling around the end. He glanced at Nic as he slid the crystal on. He too understood why his brother gave them the crystal, but he never thought he'd use it for this. Standing next to his brother in alliance across from the girls, Casey nodded his head in agreement that he was ready to cast.

"I guess it will have to work for now." Sophia sighed, as she too, slipped the crystal onto her wand, which was a light blue rod with a clear gem on its tip. "Val's right. Let's just do this quick before-"

"Sophia Russo!" A familiar voice shouted from her wand. She extended her arms so the sound was farther away from her ears.

Oh no.... She cringed as the voice became louder and more stern.

Casey losened his grip on his wand, and bobbled his head to try to get a better listen on the other end of Sophia's wand. "Is that Uncle Justin?" He asked, stepping forward towards the girls.

"Hi Daddy..." Soph replied in a unsure tone.

"Sophia Margarita Gianna Russo, don't you "Hi Daddy" me, missy. You left campus, without informing anyone of your whereabouts...." Justin said. Sophia's eyes shut tight and her shoulders rose as she and her cousins listened on. "You know, you shouldn't be wandering off, especially at a time like this! Do you know how hard it is to..." He rambled.

"It was only for a little while..." She said in defense. "And besides, like you said, there is no place safer than the Russo Family lair..."

"That doesn't mean run off there when ever you want, all willy nilly, and such! Young lady, we are going to have a stern talk when-"

"But Uncle Justin! Casey chimed in. He grabbed the wand from Sophia and began speaking into it. "She came here with Val."

"Of course she did..." Justin took a long deep breath, one that almost sounded unapproving, though he didn't want it to come off that way.

Casey shrugged in confusion at his uncle's sigh and looked at Valentina as if he felt she did nothing wrong. He placed his focus back on the call. "Either way, Uncle Justin, the girls only came here to talk to us about the rule change. It seems that we didn't exactly get the memo in time..."

Sophia picked at her upper lip as Casey spoke, knowing it was hard to lie to her father, let alone just bend the truth a little. "Uncle Max must have forgot to tell them, but it's okay, they know now. And they want to study with us...to prepare for the preliminaries."

Casey rasied his eyes at the girl. His face showed it all, Sophia was pulling them into a place they had no intention of going. "We want to what!?" He muttered away from the phone.

"Go with it!" Sophia silently grumbled back

"Okay, I guess I over reacted a bit there...Now knowing that....That is... that's a semi-reasonable response." Justin replied. "That was very responsible of you Soph..." His voice seemed much calmer than the anger his set lose upon them a few minutes prior. "Either way, I sent an escort to get you back to WizTech. I guess now, I'll tell her she's escorting all four of you, instead of just one." He added. "Oh and Sophie, we're still going to have a small reasonable talk about the dangers of leaving without telling people where you're going..." The wand disconnected and hung up.

Sophia sighed in relief. "We probably have time to do the spell before whatever crazy creature my dad sent over here. Quickly! She looked at her wand, which was gripped in her hand at the ready. She looked to Val.

Casey reassumed his position next to his brother, but this time, his arms were crossed as he stared at the girls. "Hold on, back me up Nick..." The glare in his eyes was starting to become more crossed. "Since when did we say that we wanted to study with you?"

ImageVal hung back as Sophia nervously handled the conversation with her Dad that was interjected on every few seconds by Casey who, for better or for worse was trying to mitigate her Father's scolding as best as he could. The debate took dips and turns, but by the end of it all Sophia seemed to be pretty much in the clear, Val just hoped the mention of her name wouldn't warrant a phone call to her Mother, or even worse her Father who was quite notably the stricter of the two and often the one she feared disappointing the most, but bending the rules slightly had always been commonplace for her so she decided to brush it off and assume that her business as usual curiosity and exploration would be seen as just that.

Now, with the interruption put behind them for a few minutes the kids all fastened the modifiers to the wands and prepared to collect the item they came for and to set the course of their futures back onto the right path. Sophia, with what Val appraised as an installation of confidence set her sight on her cousin Val before she took a steadying breath and prepared to weave the words in her mind that would help them locate the wand. All she needed was a simple scrying spell which she'd done many times over, and the crystal, as told by Nick would make it as easy as taking candy from a baby.

Wand raised, and confidence ebbing Valentina was ready, but was abruptly stopped dead in her tracks by the unlikely dissension of Casey.

"Hold on, back me up Nick...Since when did we say that we wanted to study with you?" Val couldn't place where this emboldened offense was coming from, but she simmered it down to Nico and his cataclysmic attitude being an inciting factor in the tone of the room. In another, rather unlikely turn of events Val watched incredulously as Nico raised his wand to join hers and Sophia's.

"Casey. Now's not the time bro, first things first. We need this wand, and this is our only chance to get it. Now come on, we'll talk about this later. Besides, we can do this without you man, this is your area of expertise." He said sternly as he nudged his brothers arm, encouraging him to join their unexpected ragtag coven. When the awkwardness felt too heavy to let linger a moment longer Valentina spoke.

"The spell is really easy, I'll chant. All you guys have to do is keep your minds black of anything other than wand. The more vividly you can see the object the easier it'll be for me to find. If all goes well, the spell will guide our hands towards the location of the wand kind of like a Ouija board." Val focused on chanting her spell, she felt as resistance as she scryed for where the wand could be, Sophia and Nico were harded to channel than she thought, but Casey on the other hand, his visual was coming through as clear as a television broadcast. She was starting to suspect he was doing all the heavy lifting, and took care to follow his lead.

Show to me what I must see
Reveal to me that which shall be
Guide us four to what we need

Val felt a chill run through her body, there was something so invigorating, so complete about the way their magic combined and felt as they cast the spell, she imagined that that was what being a full wizard must feel like, even if only partially and she wanted more. Val chanted cooly as she felt a tug on her arm that pulled motion from her shoulder compelling her to sweep her wand across the room in general spans as the others followed the same trajectory. The more she chanted, the more they followed suit, the more they focused and the smaller their radius became until they stumbled forward clumsily, as their magic dragged them towards a bust in the corner of the room. Valentina beckoned for her cousins to take a closer look. Together with a sweep of their wands over the bust the cranium of the statue came open and upon opening there was the wand levitating in the hollowed out bust, ripe for the taking. Val smiled excitedly at her cousins, proud of her work and more importantly proud of them all for working together to make it happen. As much as she would have loved credit she knew that her spell alone would've been no match for a mystery this scale, not this quickly anyways.

However, their victory was short sung as a rattle roused them quickly out of their giddiness. The portal door shook before bursting open and inviting a small sprite like creature inside. Before it could find them out, Val brushed her hand over the family wand and whispered a quick charm in Latin: ineptus oculos caeci. It roughly meant blind to unfit eyes and for a few short minutes would render the wand completely invisible to anyone but her cousins. Now the only thing left to do was to get back to Wiztech in time.

"Now come on, we have a whole entire campus to give you losers a tour of, we don't want to make Uncle Justin any more mad than he already is." Val said as she discreetly passed the wand off to Casey who at the moment was closest to her and likely the least suspicious of the four if a search was in their future. Val skipped ahead of the queue making her way ahead of their escort into the portal. "God, I'm hungry... you guys think the cafeteria is still open?" She groaned as she disappeared into the fog of the portal, well on her merry way.

In basic family fact, "The Baby" was the best choice for keeping the wand. Everyone, even Nico had a soft spot for him, so in the event that the object was discovered, if it was to be discovered in Casey's possession, he would probably get off with a small warning instead of the full blown punishments his brother or his cousins would have had to serve. Casey swiftly took the wand from Valentina as she passed him and kept away from the sprite's view. He stuck it in his left back pocket, and out of habit, left the top of the silver wand stick out, though it didn't matter as Val had already placed the cloaking spell. He took one last deep breath and reluctantly followed Nic into the portal, who seemed to follow Val. At the end of the line was Sophia, who with one look back after she stepped through the portal's threshold, waved her wand to shut and lock the door behind them. They all followed the sprite through the white fog and entered the wizard world all together.

"God, I'm hungry... you guys think the cafeteria is still open?" Val asked.

Sophia kept walking along with the group. Her head was down and she kept on kicking a small stone on the ground as she walked. "Val, you do remember we all have automatic kitchen privileges, right?"

Casey's gaze was down upon the ground too, but for a slightly different reason. Unlike Sophie's which was out of nervousness about what her father would do to her, his was about what the student body would do to him Add that to the things not to tell people... He sighed. There was no chance of not being able to identify as a Russo now. Just stepping foot through that portal was like having the name RUSSO tattooed to his forehead. Having only been through the portal four or five times before, he knew that this was the start of something he really never wished for; a world full of people comparing him to his family.

The rock Sophia was kicking hit the back of Casey's shoe. She looked up to see the wand in plain sight with no cloaking magic protecting it from peeping eyes anymore as Val's original spell wore off. "Casey! The wand!" She muttered agressively as the rest of the walked ahead. She twirled her finger at the wand in his back pocket and muttered "MinΓΊsculo!", a spell which effectively shrunk the wand down to the size of a pencil, which now was able to fit into his pocket in a way which most wouldn't notice. She watched as he spun around to figure out what she did, but by then the whit fog started to pull away. The sprite walked them through another door, which opened up right to the main hallway of WizTech. With her task done, the spirte vanished without a trace.

Justin, in his pressed suit and dark purple cloak, stood firmly by the stairs leading up to the doorrooms. "I want you to know we are all taking this very seriously. Your mom is trying very hard find a loop-hole, and your dad is trying to confuse the council into appealing the decision." He said as he looked upon the next soon-to-be infamous generation of Russos in the main hall. "We are trying our very best, but I have to be honest with you, it doesn't seem good right now, but I promise, it will work out in the end for you guys." By the tone of his voice, the overwhelming feeling of stress and remorse was flodding the halls. Even with that he smiled and embraced his nephews. "Boys, I'll have to say I was shocked when Sophia said it was your decision to study here with us. Yet, nontheless I am happy you are here, all of you. You all will make our family proud, even if you have to compete." He turned his gaze over to Sophia. This one was much less inviting and more fatherly. "Sophia. Office. Now." His voice was calm, but there was an internal emotional fire to his words. Casey could feel it.

"Well, guess I'll have to give a raincheck on the food later..." Sophie sighed to her cousins as she stumbled over to where her dad was standing. With an effortless flick, Justin and Sophia flashed out.

"Well, hate to break up your little family reunion..." A girl said. The voice seemed to be coming from behind. Casey turned around, startled to see a girl in a burgundy sweatshirt leaning up against the wall casually listening in on their conversation as she threw pieces of popcorn into her mouth. Her hair was with brownish-black and tied up in a ponytail with a few stray pieces out of the holder.

Casey froze, when he walked in to see no one in the main hall gave him the false hope he could possible hind the fact he was a Russo, but now, after seeing this girl, that slim chance was back to no chance. "You're not going to tell anyone right!" He asked the girl, already knowing what she was thinking about.

She shrugged. "Maybe some green peas, the stray cat,...." She said sarcastically as she rolled her eyes and bobbed her head from side to side with every random thing she listed on. She giggled and looked back at the boy, who seemed to take this matter very seriously. "I'm kidding! Wow, some didn't inherit the Russo ability to take a joke..." She pushed herself away from the wall and walked up to the three of them. "But anyway, I was told you two, the dynamic duo over there, were in need of a tour?" She looked at Nico and Casey.

Nico watched as Casey squirmed at every question and gaze that came his way. What was he so nervous about? As pissed ad Nico was to somehow be confined by the halls of a school during the Summer time, he fully intended to slack off as much as possibly and use his notoriety as a Russo and also the kid who flooded the school freshman year to to have a few laughs and meet some new people. He intended for his stay at Wiztech to fly by, to him it was free room and board away from home. Besides, when they rectified the whole situation there'd be no reason to stay a day longer if they didn't want to step foot in Wiztech's halls ever again.

Just as Sophie got hauled away a girl sporting a messy ponytail and a burgundy sweater sauntered over from where she stood propped against a wall across the hallway, picking out pieces of their conversation as she casually feasted on her microwave bag of popcorn. Nico raised a brow as he sussed her out. Casey seemed put off by how much she'd over heard and her interest in them, but Nico was intrigued and the fact that she looked slightly familiar only made the mystery more appealing to him.

The boy quickly searched his brain for any clues of where he might know her from, he couldn't settle on any particular moment but he settled on the idea that he most probably met her in the short lived month or so that he attended the school in his freshman year.

The girl chewed away at her popcorn as if they were a blockbuster film and offered to give them a tour around the school. In any other circumstances he would say no, he wasn't a school spirit type of guy, but Wiztech was a sprawling campus and it'd been a few years since he'd seen it last. And, it would take a while for their luggage, that he assumed was on its way to be checked out in the mail room before they could claim a room as their own.

"I guess it couldn't hurt, lead the way mystery girl. I'm Nicolas, you can call me Nick, this nervous wreck is Casey, and you are?"

"Lydia Lee, you'll get to know her whether you like it or no, she's very popular." Val joked playfully as she gave the girl a curt smile and a nod. She knew her a bit, but never really had much of a conversation with her in the past, but everyone on campus knew Lydia, she was a social titan. She wondered if she was regarded so fondly because of her charm or her power to grant wishes... maybe a mix of both. "She's part wizard and part mermaid, which means you better get in her good graces because she can grant wishes." This time Val directed her speech to Casey who seemed a bot overwhelmed by being here.

"I'm Nicolas, you can call me Nick, this nervous wreck is Casey, and you are?" Lydia shook her head slightly to the side and smiled. She knew very well who they were and what they were doing there.

Casey, still nervous about the entire situation just tottered back and forth. "Hello." He said, trying not to be rude to the girl.

"Oh don't worry. I already know who you are, Water Boy" She said to Nick on the fly. Was it fate that she got to meet the famous Russo, or did she just wheedle her way in? "And what she said." She nodded her head over in the direction of Val after her brief and condensed crash course of Lydia’s history. "Except now with the addition of you two I've been reduced to 5th place on the popular list.” She shrugged. "How's Alistar by the way? Still trying to inform you on the dangers of mixing the worlds?" She toyed. She shrugged her shoulders. "Anyway, follow me-but first." She looked at the boys and scanned them, her eyes trailing up and down their body measuring their size and figures. She swirled her fingers around in the air "Uniformus Appearus" she muttered and the black robes and goofy spectacles were adorned on the boys. "Welcome to WizTech!" She said sarcastically.

Casey jumped back after the spell was performed, and looked down to see himself in his "new look”, unsure if he liked it or not.

"Come on then, follow me" She turned around and started leading them around the school, pointing out the basics like the dorm rooms, the cafeteria, the lounge, and some of the classrooms.

She led them into an open room which seemed like no student dared to enter for a reason. "This is where I tell you that you should spend most of your time. The room has been reserved for you and only you Russos until your preliminary exam. Must be nice to be you.β€œ She stood by the entrance to the room and held the door open. "When would that be exactly, I have no idea. That test appears at random. Could be tonight, tomorrow, next week, next month...you get the idea."

Casey peeped his head inside. The room was large, at least 120 feet wide with a 15 foot ceiling. The walls were a pale orange, a bit lighter than the shade he was used to seeing on his family couch in his own living room. The floor was wood panels, which seemed to creek as he stepped inside. Intrigued by the size and scale of the practice room he was in his eyes gazed upon the large chandelier which hung above them and gave a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to the ambience.

"Cool right?" Lydia said as she sat in the arm of one of the deep purple satin couches. There were three couches, which were arranged in a semi circle-"U-like" formation. One that was like the family lair. "This is the practice room. If you don't already know what it's used for then, I can't help you." She snarked.

"Yeah, it's no lair, but it's still pretty cool I guess" Casey replied, standing over by the large work bench-desk which many crash course spell books resided. The room seemed to calm him down. Something reminded him of home, and let him forget about his worries. In that room Casey looked and acted like Casey. His shoulders finally relaxed and his breaths were less intense. He finally smiled after seeing himself in a mirror, a reminder that he was Casey Russo, and just that. The room allowed him to be himself, free from judgement or fear of exposure. His vulnerability was no more.

"What's on the other side of that wall?" He asked, moving towards the wall on the eastern side of the room. Something was drawing his attention to it, and he couldn't exactly put his finger on what it was. It was a wall like the ones in the rest of the room, though to him, it seemed like it was giving off some kind of sensation, a nerve-racking kind of feeling inside his gut.

"The headmaster's office." Lydia replied, looking down at her freshly painted soft pink nails. "Why? You making plans to break in anytime soon?”

Casey picked up the old mirror off the floor and leaned it up against the wall. "Please please, tell me now, is there something I should know, Deranium, Deranium" he casted with a swing of his wand the mirrors image faded into one of the inside of the office. There he saw his uncle and Sophia conversing. Justin obviously starting to get upset by what he was hearing.

β€” β€” β€”

"Max told me that when you guys left there was a statue broken on the lair. A very important statute. In fact so important because it held the family wand."

"Why are you looking at me daddy?"

"Some are evil some are kind-"

"Okay okay. We may have accidentally used some divination and a location spells to track it down." Sophia answered, cutting off her dads truth spell before it was complete. "Okay okay. We used magic to find the wand. But it was for a good purpose. We figured if we practice with them and are all really good, that the council would see that we are all worthy of keeping our powers."

β€œUn huh,” Justin replied, not buying Sophia’s excuse. β€œAnd that has nothing to do with this being in your room.” He held up the Forbidden Book of Spells that she hid in her laundry basket. In hinds sight, it probably wasn’t the best or safest hiding spot.

Her face turned white, she was frozen still, speechless.

β€œSophia, this is not like you. Keeping secrets, hiding things from me, running off without telling anyone. What is wrong?” He asked, calmly.

Sophia avoided eye contact and crossed her arms in front of her. She refused to say another word.

β€œIf it’s the competition you’re worried about…” He walked towards her and handed her a slip of paper with writing to small to make out from the mirror’s image. β€œDo whatever you have to do to come out on top for the preliminary exam. Afterwards, your mother and I will discuss your punishment.”

β€” β€” β€”

The image faded and the mirror’s reflections of the room reappeared.

β€œHarsh…” Lydia replied, somehow with another bag of popcorn in her hand, watching the entire thing like a TV Drama.

"Oh don't worry. I already know who you are, Water boy." Lydia spoke breezily. The statement took Nick back a step, but he didn't dare show it on his face. He let out a contemplative "Hm," and gave her a quick smirk. Three weeks of planning for the greatest singlehanded prank in Wiztech history and I get reduced to Waterboy... Nico couldn't resolve his division between feeling slightly offended and intrigued by her quick wit that was so perfectly juxtaposed by her sweet and unassuming appearance. Nico had half a mind to probe further, but was cut short by Val's run down on Lydia. The more he knew, the less he knew about what to make of her, she seemed like a bit of a walking contradiction.

"How's Alistar by the way? Still trying to inform you on the dangers of mixing the worlds?." Lydia quipped. This time it was Val's turn to look taken a back, but she was easier read than her cousin. She blinked in astonishment at the girl's bravado but quickly traded her flabbergasted look for a ebullient smile.

"He's great, and a possible contender for top the class last time I checked, so I wouldn't count his ideas out just yet." She said, trying to keep the venom at bay. There was something about being challenged that pushed her buttons without fail. Nico wasn't hesitant to let out a guffaw at the back-handedness of the whole encounter. Val tilted her head in his direction and slanted her eyes at him, he simply shrugged in return and kept on following their mysterious guide who, as the next feature of their tour adorned them in long black Harry-Potter-esque robes and hideous round black fashion frames which elicited a boisterous laugh from Nick.

"Yeah, I'm not wearing this. Ever." He said and quickly flashed the garb off of his body and instead carried it slung over his shoulder with the glasses tucked in his back pocket.

A few steps later the group was in a grand room, that according to Lydia was their training grounds until the day they would take their final exam. The room was massive, and Nic was already eager to find out just how much practicing the room could handle. He readied his wand to test it, in the name of science but stopped short when Casey's attention was caught by the far wall, that was seemingly normal to him.

"Please please, tell me now, is there something I should know, Deranium, Deranium." The kids all gathered closely and watched as Sophia was berated by her Father for her recent bout of breaking and entering, and Valentina couldn't help but to feel responsible for the whole thing.

"Casey shut that off, she's going to be embarrassed enough without us prying into her business." Val scolded, displacing her frustration with herself onto the boy as she plopped onto one of the satin couches and tucked her face into her hands.

β€œHarsh…” Lydia replied, somehow with another bag of popcorn in her hand, watching the entire thing like a TV Drama.

"Does no one feel as guilty as I do right now?." Val asked as she peeked up from her hands to survey the room.

"Not particularly, no. Besides, if you think her Dad would ever let her lose you're just as naive as you look." Nick said with his wand at the ready as he waved it in a cyclic motion causing a fire storm to brew at the type, he wielded his wand until the fire grew bigger and bigger. He imagined Casey would probably be losing his shit right now, but he didn't check or focus on anything other than the spell at hand. He cast the fireball at the wall curious to see if something would ignite, but it bounced off the wall and sizzled as it fell to the floor in a amber string of sparks. The room was spell proofed so it seemed, but he was determined to find some way to live his mark on this pristine place. "Imagine how the headmaster of Wiztech would look if his only Daughter lost her Wizard competition and became a mortal? He'd be a laughing stock, hell maybe they'd even petition to get him off the council and that causes another problem. Uncle Justin powers and his job are a package deal from what I heard. So, if I were you I would figure out what's on that paper he passed her. Probably won't be good news for you." He said with a scoff before landing himself on the couch next to Val, and kicked his legs up onto a pile of books on the table.

"You're so full of shit Nic, since when are you so selfless? You're in this too.." Val asked, as she straightened out her posture and stared him down dead on, looking for any window to reveal the angle that she knew he was playing.

"I'm not selfless at all, I don't care what happens in this competition.Ask Case, he knows. I've been checked out of this medieval archaic BS competition for a long time now. I've had years to consider the possibility of losing my powers, you've had less than 24 hrs. I just wanted to see the stupid look on your face when you realize Little Miss Headmaster isn't going to play fair just because you two are the best of friends now." I don't have to win, I just have to play my cards well enough that Val and Sophia gun for each other, leaving a window open for Casey.

"That's not true, you don't know that." Val said, laughing it off breezily.

"Yeah, maybe I don't but nobody knows for sure. I do know that that elitist pretty boy you call your boyfriend would have a lot to say if you lost." Nic said matter of factly. He could see ever muscle in Val's body tensing as she fought to hold nack her anger that was now, straight to her hands in the form of two balled fists. He knew better than to get hit by her again, she had a killer hook and didn't intend to spend his first week back to Wiztech flirting with the freshman with a black eye and crooked nose.

"Hey, don't shoot the messenger. I'll just get out of your way before you do something you regret." He said and retreated to the other end of the couch where he proceeded to chat up Lydia about the rest of the run down of the place, the stuff they left off the brochures. Val huffed as she tried to reign her emotions back in, but the more she tried the more frustrated she got until her anger and energy built up so much that a old spell book that sat before her exploded into a ticker tape parade of thousands of pages of spells.

She shot a quick text message to Alistar.
"I'm getting out of here before I do exactly that. I'll be in the gym if anyone needs me. But try not to need me." She spoke as she stormed out the room.

"Does no one feel as guilty as I do right now?" Val asked as she peeked up from her hands to survey the room.

"She has the book!" Casey exclaimed, trying to catch the rest of their attentions. "Forget the guilt, she has the book. THE BOOK!"

"Not particularly, no. Besides, if you think her Dad would ever let her lose you're just as naive as you look." Nick said with his wand at the ready as he waved it in a cyclic motion causing a fire storm to brew. "So, if I were you I would figure out what's on that paper he passed her. Probably won't be good news for you"

Casey moved the mirror back to its original location. "It's fair game, Valentina. Nick is right, with Uncle J at her finger tips, she's the biggest threat to all of us. Plus, her dad would be sure not to lose twice." He continued wandering around the room looking for things that could possibly help him prep for this exam.

"You're so full of shit Nic, since when are you so selfless? You're in this too.."

"OooOoofff" Casey added, shaking his head in disagreement.

"I'm not selfless at all, I don't care what happens in this competition. Ask Case, he knows."

"He's right. He clocked out a long time ago. Despite my pestering to actually get him to try..." Casey sighed, looking at his brother who lounged on the couch. He's got a plan, I know it. "Besides Val, didn't you see? Sophia has the book and knows where the wand is. We are nothing compared to the spells in there." As Val went to take a swing, he jumped to Nicks side, ready to take on his cousin if she dared to even try. As she retracted her fists, Casey rolled his eyes, to him, Valentina seemed more of a "bark, but no bite" type of person, especially during this time.

"I'm getting out of here before I do exactly that...try not to need me." Val stormed out after texting Alistar.

Lydia rapidly answered most of Nico's questions, being sure to put her own spin on the answers she replied with. She stopped midsentence once Val was out of sight of the room, and switching the topic to Casey's remark on Nico's participation in the competition. "So wait, you're serious about not even trying to win this thing?" What an odd turn of events she sighed. "I guess we have more in common then I thought."

--

As Sophia took the paper her father gave her from out of her pocket, and read the scribbled down spell. What the-? She thought not knowing what the spell was used for, nor even how to pronounce it. She flipped on the back of the paper to see if anything was there to help her out, but all she could find was an address to an office building. She looked at it with crooked eyes, confused at what her father wanted her to do with this information. Wait a second She flashed herself to the mail room and opened up an WIPS. "Mailus Spontanuous, Wizard Competition Commissioner's Office" She said as she walked through the instant portal.

As the morning of the preliminary exam came, Sophia sighed, looking at the spell her father gave her a few days before. Still undeciphered, the spell seemed to be of some importance, or else why would her dad give it to her. "You can do this Sophia, just give it your all, and it will all turn out okay...ish....I hope." She slipped the paper into her pocket once more before a flash of light struck her and transported her to a small room on the outskirts of the school. "What the-? Hello? I thought we agreed on this afternoon! Not now! I wasn't ready yet!?" She screamed as she looked around, panicking about what just happened. She was alone, but she could feel the presence of her family in the rooms next to hers. She ran towards the door, which had a large square window where see could see across the hall. The other side was Casey, in his own solitary room. Unlike her cousins, she knew the preliminary was going to be today, however this is not what she thought the test would be like. For started she thought it would be some lavish outdoor arena or on some center stage, not an empty isolation room.

Casey, with his wand at the ready, looked around for the thing that flashed them out of their rooms and into this place. "Sophie!" He shouted from the other room as he saw her on the other side. He shrugged his shoulders, also unsure about what was happening. "It must be the exam, it appears randomly!" He tried to say, but his voice was mumbled and unclear through the walls.

"Where's the wand!?"

"I don't know. I woke up and it wasn't by my bed, then I got flashed here."
