"The Secrets of the Universe reveal themselves to those who listen."

a character in “Worlds Collide”, as played by WadeJackel

Soundwave originally transformed into a small cassette player (Communications tower, while on Cybertron), in robot mode, Soundwave is a large, powerful Decepticon in indigo armor, built in a blocky utilitarian style. A sizable trapdoor in his chest bears the Decepticon emblem in its center, and is rimmed in a bright yellow ribbon of color. His single, deep-red eye-band and silver face mask, along with the deep, reverberating monotone of his voice, often seem to make him almost expressionless. The distinctive monotone, computerized voice, makes him the coolest sounding Transformer ever.

Soundwave is physically strong compared to most Decepticons. In fact, Soundwave had taken on three of the strongest Autobots single handed on the journey to earth, prior to its crash landing into the side of the mountain.

Soundwave as a Communication Tower

Soundwave rarely displayed much emotion, described by his fellow Decepticons as uncharismatic and dull.

Soundwave considers Megatron to be highly intelligent; though he lacked any formal education in the ways of science and technology, he displayed an uncanny ability to pick up concepts and apply them in new ways. Although there is often a sense that Soundwave is merely waiting for the perfect opportunity to claim leadership, he no doubt considers himself far superior to the other Decepticons, indeed even Megatron himself.

Soundwave commands a legion of cassette troops to carry out tasks big and small. He has a symbiotic relationship with them. Soundwave regularly gathers vital intelligence for Megatron's numerous schemes with the aid of his faithful and ever-growing team of transforming cassettes. These include the condor Laserbeak. the black cougar Ravage, the twin robots Rumble and Frenzy, along with several others.

Soundwave is able to detect and jam transmissions across the entire energy spectrum, a talent that makes him suited to his position as Decepticon Communications Officer. Additionally, he has a photographic memory thanks to the vast data storage capacity of the magnetic disks in his chest compartment, and he is armed with a shoulder-mounted radio wave sensor and hand-held concussion blaster.

Originally Soundwave was the only Decepticon who possesses the unique ability to create Energon Cubes, which are the main source of energy for both the Autobots and the Decepticons. Later on he had apparently taught several others how to generate the cubes, these were largely the jet Decepticons like Starscream and a few others.

Soundwave serving in much the same capacity as the Autobots, Teletraan-1

Soundwave is one of Megatron's most reliable troops, and he has positioned himself comfortably and irreplaceable in Megatron's upper command structure. He stands at the Decepticon leader's side as a confidant. He is comparable to Starscream and Shockwave in rank and is the only one of the three to display consistent loyalty to Megatron. Soundwave guards his place in the hierarchy fiercely. Soundwave was the first member of Megatron's Decepticon army. Despite his primary role as a spy and communications officer, he never shied away from the battlefield.
