Name: Shailene Satana Harris

Alias: Night Shadow

Age: 15

Sexual Orientation: Straight

Description: Adorably short and petite, Shailene is very slim and delicate-looking - but she's not. She has almond-shaped, piercing olive-green eyes beneath arched eyebrows, a high forehead, high cheeks, sensual lips, and a thin nose. She has caramel-brown skin that she inherited from her biological father, whom she does not live with but we'll exlain that in the bio. Long, silky and straight dark brown falls down her back and around her shoulders elegantly and freely, hardly ever being worn back. Actually, she hates having her hair up. DON'T ASK!!!

Personality:

Shailene is a quiet person that does not like too much noise and she's cripplingly shy. She often feels uncomfortable around people because she has awful eyesight when there's too much light because she's not used to the sun and bright stuff yet. She's mainly lived in the basement her entire life, so social interactions are still very new to her. She doesn't trust people because the people she should've been able to trust hurt her and she uses her shadows for everything - protection, life, and just a way to get away from the pain of getting close to people.

However, if you get her out of her shell of fear and mistrust, you might find a sweet, sarcastic, and goofy girl. She's surprisingly clumsy because she's used to living in the smaller dimension of her family's basement and not getting out a lot unless it was for to come up for homeschooling.

  • Light weakens her abilites and extreme exposure to light makes her physically weaker
  • She does not know how to fight

History

History:

Before Shailene was born, her mother cheated on her husband with a man she met on her business retreat in Hawaii. Once she discovered that she was pregnant, she tried to hide the paternity of her unborn child, hoping and praying that the child would look like her husband. However, when Shailene was born, her "father" realized that the color of her skin was nowhere near theirs and immediately realized that Shailene was not his child. At that point, it was obvious that her life would never know true happiness.

When it was time to bring baby Shailene home, the parents lied and claimed that she was adopted because the mother lost the child she was carrying. They wanted to protect their image, not wanting to town to see that the perfect couple were on a breaking point and that one of them cheated. Once at home, the father proposed to kill the baby and the mother selfishly, because she did not want some bastard ruining her chances with her husband, agreed. So, they made a fire in the back woods near their house and prepared to throw Shailene in it. But her mutation kicked in at that particular moment, the shadows from the flickering flames encasing her tiny body in a dark, cool protection. From that moment, both parents realized that they would have to keep the mutie freak.

For her entire life, Shailene was kept in the basement of the nice home, only having the privilege of coming upstairs when she had a private tutor or when people were visiting the home. This was the only time they acted like a real family and the parents acted as if they adored the very ground she walked on, providing her better clothing during this time. In order for them to keep Shailene in the basement and for no one to question why she never got out much, the parents lied and stated that she was a sickly child and could therefore not be around other children for fear of contaminating them with her sickness. So, they had her homeschooled by someone and refused to allow her to go outside and socialize. The father hated her more than anything and resorted to physical abuse up until Shailene turned ten because she finally realized that her powers were real and that she could use them. So, she began to use them, hiding in the shadows - and there were plenty in the basement - of her room whenever the only man she knew as father would come to cause her physical harm. Her mother hardly paid her any attention and ignored her mainly because she regretted her affair. So, Shailene grew up with the mentality that she couldn't trust anyone.

When she turned fifteen, her parents came to her and told her that they were sending her away to Xavier's Institute. They were done caring for some "bastard mutie freak" and were ready to be rid of her. They even decided to purchase her an entire, new wardrobe and gave her some money to take with her. They dropped her off without so much as a goodbye, leaving Shailene at the front gates alone and wary of taking the first steps of her new life.

So begins...

It was late... or early when Shailene was dropped off at Xavier's Institute. Time didn't mean much to her. To Shailene all that mattered was that it was dark and soothing. Shadows were everywhere and she took comfort in that as she looked to her new home. Shailene was nervous, this area was too wide and she felt vulnerable she didn't know if even the shadows could protect her from what she would find here. Is this really going to be better for me?

"Hello, you must be the new student." A voice came from behind her. Shailene jumped and spun around automatically ready to put up a defense. what she saw made her pause. She was a red skinned mutie with black hair, yellow eyes, and... horns. Horns were a new one to her. Still she was smiling, smiling was good right? Her tutor had smiled at her whenever she did particularly well on an assignment so smiling meant....

"I'll show you to your room." The mutie broke into her thoughts. "I know you'll like it here there are so many nice new students. I'm sure you'll make great friends. I'm Nadia, I'll be here to help you if you need anything..." Nadia went on as she led Shailene across the mansion. Shailene began to look around as she clutched her one bag and follow her.

As they walked through the grounds Shailene become more and more nervous and twitchy, one hand tapping silently at her thigh. However just as it seemed she would burst from nervousness and the constant chatter. She heard something and she stopped. Nadia noticed and stopped as well quieting for a moment. That was when Shailene realized someone was singing. Slowly the singer got louder and Shailene could recognize the words.

Now that I know what I’m without
you can't just leave me
breathe into me and make me real
bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

Bring me to life
(I've been living a lie, there's nothing inside)
Bring me to life

frozen inside without your touch
Without your love, darling
only you are the life among the dead

The song was near and dear to her heart and she began to harmonize with the beautiful voice. As a note lingered Shailene looked around for the noticed a girl flying overhead. Shailene dubbed the obvious mutie Angel in her mind and she silently thanked the girl in her mind for comforting her in this strange new world. As the song finished Shailene was able to follow Nadia with a little more confidence and less fear. "So where will I be sleeping? Does the basement have multiple rooms?"

"Basement? You will be staying upstairs on the west side of the building. No one stays in the basement." Nadia looked confused. "Oh" Shailene looked embarrassed. Finally, they reached Shailene's room. Shailene quickly thanked Nadia and hurried inside the dark room closing the door behind her. Finally darkness. She leaned on the door and slowly slid down. Cool soothing darkness. Not noticing the bed she fell asleep comfortably where she was on the floor.

Shailene out of habit was up at dawn. She'd had a nightmare she couldn't remember and had awoken panting. At first she hadn't known where she was, Shailene went over the events of yesterday in her head. Realizing where she was Shailene got up and grabbed her generic ivory soap a washcloth and she headed over to the bathroom to wash up and brush her teeth. That done she quick headed to her room and got dressed in a black hoodie and dark jeans. It was then that she realized that she had no idea what she was going to do today. She heard her stomach rumble. Definitely food first. She headed out the door and towards where she smelled food coming from.

On the way to the kitchen Shailene bumped into Nadia. "Oh, I was just looking for you." Said Nadia "I forgot to give you your class schedule here it is. Some of your classes are a little advanced but we were told you had been toutored in advanced classes before and we want you to push yourself." Shailene was handed a piece of paper that said this,
Harris, Shailene S
8:30 Genetics and Mutation
9:30 Journalism/Yearbook
10:30 Korean
11:00 Literature
12:00 Lunch
1:00 Pre-Calculus
2:00 Biology/Life Science
3:00 Training/P.E

Shailene looked up at Nadia shyly "Umm... Do you happen to have a map?" Nadia smiled "Of course, here you go." Shailene was handed a map and Nadia helped her to mark where her classes were on it and even where the kitchen and some students in her classes rooms were in case she needed help in class. "Need anything else Shailene?" Nadia smiled that ever cheerful smile. Shailene had to smile back. "No, not right now but thank you." And she Hurried towards the kitchen it was almost time for classes.

When she arrived at the kitchen she heard "So, what's your schedule?" and paused before entering. I am really ready to face the other students? She asked herself. Then her stomach growled again as if to say "Food first childhood traumas later." So she took a deep breath, covered herself in shadow to make herself slightly harder to see and walked nervously into the kitchen.

Katherine strolled along the halls, humming to Animal I Have Become By Three Days Grace. She nodded her head along to the beat, muttering,

I can't escape this hell,
so many times I tried,
but I'm still caged inside,
Somebody get me through this nightmare,
I can't control myself!

Katherine walked and walked, until she snapped her eyes open, about to slam into a wall. "Super senses, I thank you once again." She talked to herself as she opened the door and walked into the kitchen. Suddenly, a body-less shadow passed by her. Katherine had to blink a few times to register what just happened. She was about to call out to it, when someone tapped on her shoulder. Turning, she saw the devil's look alike with a smile on her face. "Hey Katherine! I've got your class schedule for you." Nadia stuck a piece of paper out to Katherine, which she took. She was actually kind of nervous about her classes. This was her first time in a school with other people. The paper read,

Katherine Torvedia

8:30 Genetics and Mutation
9:30 Latin
10:30 Visual Art
11:00 Literature
12:00 Lunch
1:00 Pre-Calculus
2:00 Economics
3:00 Training/P.E

Katherine lookedat her schedule. It wasn't too bad. "Why in the world do I, of all people, need to take Genetics and Mutation? And Latin? I speak Spanish and Russian, isn't that enough?" She grumbled to herself. Walking over to the food, she grabbed a bagel and a granola bar. Katherine shoved to bar into her pocket, and turned, still looking at the schedule, and bumped into something solid. Raising her gaze up, she saw the shadow she had seen earlier. "Hey, that's a cool power you got there." She looked at the black mass with interest, circling around it.

Shailene thought things were going well, she was halfway to the food and no one had noticed her Nadia had even distracted a student who she thought had noticed her. It was all going well until Shailene had to be her clumsy self and stumble causing her to stop and get her balance causing a student to bump into her. Shailene was terrified. "Hey, that's a cool power you got there." The girl started circling her like some kind of predator and Shailene felt like the prey. She didn't dare look up Shailene didn't know what to do, should she answer or should she run? Well running wasn't an option if she didn't want more attention so she had to answer. So Shailene took a deep breath and dropped her shadow and watched it as it merged with other shadows around her. She then finally looked up at the girl's...shoulder she couldn't force herself to look any higher. "I-I'm Shailene." She said quietly. She then tried to quickly glance at the girl's face only to immediately recognize her. "You," she gasped, still quietly, in awe "Your the angel, the angel I sang with when I arrived here. You saved me."

"Oh, sorry and thanks." Shailene smiled and shook the girl's hand, shyness completely forgotten now that she knew who the girl was. "I'll make sure not to call you Kathy. As for the power," Shailene briefly made herself completely disappear then smiled sadly, as she reappeared having taken a step to the side. "it's served me well." Shailene was surprised and happy she had met a possible friend so soon. She was about to ask what other powers the girl had when her stomach growled making it known that friends were nice and all but food was more important at the moment. Shailene looked embarrassed, "Hey, wanna grab some food together then maybe you can tell me about your powers, other than flying of course." Well, maybe this school won't be so bad.

"What's yours?"

Lydia grinned at Sophia, taking a drink of her coffee. It was sweetened to perfection and the caffeine would no doubt pump energy into her bloodstreams, keeping her energized at least until lunch.

"Well, I have Dance at 8:30, Journalism/Yearbook at 9:30, Arabic at 10:30." Lydia knew she was a little happy about her schedule. It had her favorite class as her last. Definitely the best schedule known to man. "Sociology at 11:00, and then after lunch, I have Pre-Calc at 1:00, Biology at 2:00, and Training at 3:00."

Lydia cut into her pancakes and finally took a bite into the soft, buttery goodness that was pancakes. She recalled years of loving this one particular breakfast food and she was pretty sure that would never change. Remember when you used to throw all of this up, something in her mind said and Lydia found herself pausing in her chewing. Suddenly, the pancake was a tasteless mesh of cake-like stuff with a touch of a sweetness that no longer made her taste buds tingle. Her stomach suddenly was not happy to know that it was about to digest that. She found herself frowning and drinking her coffee.

Stop!

"Do you think you'll like it here?" She decided to ask Sophia just as she spotted Alex and some guy she noticed yesterday approaching them. She had noticed Katherine and this girl whom she had not seen before, but chose only to nod to Katherine - Kathy, she decided to call her mentally in amusement - as a greeting. She smiled up at Alex as the guys sat with them and forced herself not to inquire of Dom's whereabouts. She didn't want to seem too anxious about a guy she just met, but still. She had just seen him and then suddenly, he disappeared.

"Good morning, you two." Alex greeted them and took a drink of his hot chocolate. Lydia smiled brightly as she cut into her pancakes again. She was going to be able to eat her breakfast, damnit, come hell or high waters!

"Hey. How did you sleep?" She asked nicely and plucked the three cut triangles of pancakes from her fork with her teeth, chewing slowly. Finally, the taste of pancakes wasn't bland and depressing. She chewed happily until it was time for her to swallow.

And then a memory hit her hard.

"Look at my little girl!" Her mom exclaimed happily and Lydia found herself giggling, back in her five year old body. She was eating pancakes - chocolate-chip flavored - or she had been. Now, her plate was empty save for the last droplets of syrup.

"Mommy! I finished!" She told her.

Then the scene flipped and Lydia was underwater, holding her breath as the water filled the car up to the top. Her lungs were burning in protest, ready for her to take that next breath of beautiful, fresh relief. She thrashed in her seat, trying her hardest to pull at the seatbelt that chose now to be tight. Any other day, it was loose and her mom would chastise her for not tightening it. Her mom! Lydia's eyes flew to the driver's seat and she saw her mother floating motionless in her seat, head leaning against the window and blood surrounding her. Terror filled Lydia at the realization that her mother could be - was - dead.

"MOMMY!" She screamed and the water filled her, something inside of her tingling as something powerful exploded inside of her.

"I have to go," Lydia said quickly and stood, tears filling her eyes without warning. The bile rose at the back of her throat and she ran out of the dining area, sprinting faster than she ever had in cheerleading practice. Lydia ran past Nadia, who called her in concern, and found the nearest bathroom. And only there did she finally empty the contents of her stomach, retching violently and sobbing as the damn inside of her was broken.

Shailene was one cloud nine and for the first time in her life didn't feel as if she was going to be pushed off. She had what Katherine had called a nickname, Shalie. Shailene had never had a nice nickname before the nicest thing she had been called was "runt" and she hadn't liked that one too much. Happily Shailene grabbed some food with her new friend and found they had three classes together and two other classes that were the same. Shailene was extremely happy as she grabbed a stawberry milk, some suger packets, a chocolate chip muffin, some oatmeal, three waffles, and some hash browns. She then looked towards Katherine "Where do you want to sit?" She smiled wider as she thought of something, "Oh, and can I call you Rin or Riny?" Shailene had thought about it but didn't know if Katherine Would hate Riny because she hated Kathy but Shailene liked Rin better anyway. She wanted eagerly for an answer to both of her questions, she was still hungry.

Katherine took a bite out of her apple, and enjoyed that satisfying crunch that is gave off.
"We can sit wherever," Katherine responded, looking for an empty table. She was momentarily distracted by Lydia running out of the room, with tears in her eyes. A sudden over protective jolt was sent through her body as her gaze rested on Alex, immediately blaming him for it since the only person that was near Lydia was Robbie, who was too quiet to have done that, and Sophia. She didn't think Sophia would have done that, so her eyes bored holes in Alex's.
"Oh, and can I call you Rin or Riny?" Katherine's eyes snapped back to Shalie, taking them off of Alex. "Hmm? Oh, Rin is fine." She smiled back, she'd never heard that one before.
In the backround, she could hear Lydia emptying her stomach in the bathroom, then sobbing. Katherine's nose twitched momentarily, and she did not pick up any scent of rotten food. Her eyes glazed over as she zoned out, listening to Lydia, then Dom knocking on the door to see if she was alright. Katherine was now very confused.

Katherine listened to what the shadows said, and her expression became even more confused. I wonder what's up with Lydia? Katherine wanted to find out, but she didn't want to just ditch Shalie. She was her first real friend here. Well, one she met who didn't help drag a passed out boy from off of her. Katherine looked at her, and her eyes seemed to beg for forgiveness already from Shalie. "I'm sorry. I need to check out what's going on. Lydia's... my friend. Sorry. See you in class!" Katherine gave her an apologetic smile, and turned on one foot, and ran for door, throwing out her apple, banana and milk while passing a trash can.

Involuntarily, she jumped into the air, and started flying through the halls. It took her a moment to register she was airborne. "Well, this isn't safe." She said to herself, yet she didn't land. She had to keep her wings curled in slightly, so they wouldn't hit the walls. Everything was a blur as it rushed past it. Suddenly, a scent smacked into her as Dom's face appeared then disappeared. "Dom!" She yelled, curling her wings in, which sent her into a tuck and roll on the ground. She landed on her stomach, looking like an idiot, sprawled all on the floor. Katherine jumped up, recovering quickly, trying not to look embarrassed. By the look on Dom's face, she narrowed her eyes. "Do you see eagles flying around indoors? I don't think so." Her expression grew serious yet soft, as her eyes locked with his. She said in a lowered voice, "What's wrong with Lydia?" Katherine could still hear her sobbing. The sound rang in her ears in a very annoyingly sad fashion.

Shailene watched as Rin flew, literally flew, from the room and shrugged. Whatever she's doing probably has a reason and Shailene figured that she shouldn't interfere unless asked. So She ate the rest of her muffin and sighed as she threw away the rest of her food. There was no reason to stay here now she didn't feel like meeting anyone else and probably had exhausted her courage for the day anyway. So she glanced down at her map and schedule she still held and headed to her first class. There was no one in the room so she sat at the back of the class and took out a journal with her name on it. As she waited for class to start She began to write about the previous events of today and how she felt. Shailene's tutor had given it to her when she was younger.
Young 5 year old Shailene sat crying from the wounds she had recieved from her father pushing her down the basement stairs. The sound of foot steps filled her ears and at first she thought it was her father before realizing his foot steps were heavier and more brisk she looked up to see a young man in his twenties. He picked her up dusted her of and gently wiped her tears. "It's ok everyone falls sometmes." He comforted her and bandaged her wounds. When she finally stopped crying he looked at her as if he suddenly had an idea and reached into the bag at his side. From the bag he pulled a small journal and a pretty pen. He handed both to her. "Shailene one day you'll look back at this and laugh at how clumsy you were when you were young. Here you can write everything in this and no one else but you will know what's in it. But that's only if you learn how to write." 5 year old Shailene thought tutor John was the smartest and best tutor in the world.
Shailene continued to think so over the next four years. He would bring her little treats and trinkets and she would do her best in classes for him in return. Though the pain and suffering that was her life she told herself one day she would laugh, one day she would laugh. She continued faithfully to write in her journal with her special pen and hide both from her parents.
And then one day he was gone she never knew what happened but one day after her birthday the tutor who showed up was a cruel woman who beat her lessons into her and denied her any affection. The woman called Shailene "Runt" and demanded Shailene call her mistress.

Shailene never saw John again but continued to write and repeat one day I will laugh. t was how she ended each journal entry Tears filled her eyes as she put the journal away and buried her head in her arms on her desk. Hopefully no one would bother a girl with her hood over her face.

Katherine glanced up at the clock. It was about 8:30 in the morning. “I’m late…” Katherine huffed. She wondered if it was even worth going to the class. She pulled the crumpled piece of paper out of her back pocket, and looked at the list. She had genetics and mutation. “Well, I hope the teacher doesn’t ask for samples of my DNA…” She grumbled under her breath. He tried prodding her with a needle; he’s going to lose an arm.

It didn’t take too long to reach the class room. She could hear the teacher talking inside. Katherine registered her as a female. Her hand hovered above the doorknob for a moment, and a sudden feeling formed inside of her. She felt as if a rock had just dropped into her stomach, cold, hard, and annoying. Surely I am not nervous? Over something so little? Katherine practically growled as she grabbed the knob and twisted it, yanking to door open. She opened it rather forcefully. A bit more than she wanted. It made a loud sound, as every head whipped around and looked at her. Katherine’s wings twitched and nestled deeper into her back, as if trying to hide from the embarrassment. Though, the most unsettling thing was the teacher. Her eyes seemed to inspect every inch of Katherine. A sudden shiver was sent down her spine. Katherine glanced around, and noticed she was the only one in the class with something visibly mutant.

”I see you’ve decided to show up.” The teacher’s words were like nails on a chalkboard to Katherine. Another cringe was sent through her body.
“Sorry ‘bout that…” Katherine muttered. Her cheeks were burning red, and she tilted her head in an attempt to hide it. Katherine plopped herself down bluntly on the empty chair nearest to her. Glancing over for a moment, she saw it was Shalie whom she was sitting next to. The teacher didn’t take her eyes off of Katherine.
”And who are you? She asked after some deadly silence.
“Katherine Torvedia.” Katherine said, being very blunt again.
“Alright Katherine. Try not to show up late next time.” She turned back to talking to the class. Katherine hung her head like a puppy who just peed on the carpet. Katherine put her bloody paper-towel-wrapped hand on the table, and stared at it while the teacher talked.

(OOC: I hope this was alright for my first 'teacher' post in the rp.)

Shailene was happy to see Rin was in this class but was also a little worried about her. She had came in late and was injured at that. Shailene wondered if she should say something. Then again she didn't want to embarrass Rin more at the same time that injury looked really bad. Shailene fretted for a moment until an idea sprung into her head.

During this time the teacher was still talking something about the expectations for the year and the syllabus. Shailene wasn't really paying attention and so missed not only the teacher's introduction but her announcement of a project and their homework. She was too busy finding the water bottle in her bag. She then looked up at the teacher. When she turned to write something on the board Shailene quickly froze the water and placed it on Rin's desk with a towel she had also found in her bag. Shailene had no idea why it was there but it was useful.
"Miss Harris I hope I am not interrupting something."
Shailene was jolted out of her thoughts and found the whole class staring at her. This was horrible and instantly made her shut down putting her fully on her guard. Shailene finally answered the question.

"No mam."

"Then maybe you should pay attention in my class. Come sit up front maybe that will help you pay attention."The teacher pointed at a desk in the center of the front row. Shailene was terrified but out of habit didn't show it, instead she did the only thing she could do. She gathered her stuff and slowly without looking at anyone she walked to her new seat.

"If you disappear I will mark you absent." And with that the teacher, Ms. McCain now that she actually looked at the board, went back to her lecture. Shailene felt the familiar feeling of humiliation wash over her Reminds me of home, ad here a thought I would get homesick. she thought bitterly and settled in to learn whatever it was this woman had to teach her face remained blank for the rest of class.
(OOC: I hope I didn't make her too mean but it seemed like a regular teacher thing to do I hope I did alright. )

Katherine sat at her desk, staring at her hand. The pain wasn't too bad, though it was throbbing. Am I really that used to pain..? Noah was right. I am nothing but steel. Cold, heartless, unbreakable. She was referring to just before the two had set out to the separate schools. They had gotten into a fight. Katherine wasn't positive on how it started, but she was pretty sure Noah had accused her of being unable to make any friends. The two said each word with venom and hatred, as if they weren't the only true family that they had. Her wounded fist clenched, as did her jaw. He's right, you cold, heartless, monotone little b-

Her eyes raised as a towel and a frozen water bottle was put onto her desk by Shalie. Katherine's eyes softened and she gave her a thankful smile, hoping se had forgiven her for ditching her earlier. Lydia would have been better off if I hadn't come anyway... Dom's her real friend... Katherine sighed when her eyes were jerked up to the board. The teacher scolded Shalie and made her sit up in the front. Now Katherine felt worse. I got her in trouble too..? Katherine put her chin on her ok hand, and started at the board. Though she wasn't really paying attention.

Sophia was quite happy to be having a normal discussion with Lydia, Alex and Rob. At least it had seemed normal to start with, the Lydia got this look on her face like something was terribly amiss and rushed to the bathroom. Sophia was concerned and started to rise to follow her when both Dom and Katherine followed behind her. She felt too many people would only embarrass Lydia more and so Sophia slowly sat back down. "Did I say something wrong?" She wondered to herself. As her own internal turmoil was going on, she had completely missed Robbie and Alex's conversation.

As she looked up from her plate, she looked just in time to see Alex smiling at her. She smiled back at him but his own smile made her blush intensely and she turned away to look at something else until it went away. Her eyes focused on a different student for a moment. She had not seen her yesterday, nor had she seen her in the yearbooks she pored over yesterday either. Turning back, she looked at both Alex and Robbie. "So what do your schedule's look like for the day?" Without really waiting for them to hand their schedules to her, she slipped both from their hands and examined them. She was more than a little dismayed that she didn't have a single class with Alex other than Training and the disappointment showed on her face. [b]"Well that sucks, I don't have any classes with you Alex," she said and pouted as she handed his schedule back to him. She cheered up a little when she saw Robbie's schedule. While she didn't know him all that well, she was happy to be taking the same class with a familiar face. "I've got 11:00 Literature with you though. I also see you're taking Russian, just at a different time than me. Now we can talk about Alex in Russian and he won't even know." she gave a sly smile in his direction as she handed Robbie back his schedule. Robbie looked a little uncomfortable and slouched in his chair. She gave him a queer look, but didn't question him about it.

Everyone was beginning to leave the cafeteria and with a jolt she finally realized the time. "Oh, we need to get to class! See you at lunch Alex and see you in Literature Robbie." With a final wave, she jumped from her seat, threw her plate away and rushed from the door. She didn't have any supplies on her, so she ran back to her room to grab her backpack that she had prepared.

She arrived the her 8:30 Genetics and Mutations class just in time as the bell rang signalling for classes to begin. She could see that several seats were empty, but she didn't want to sit by herself and opted for a seat by the girl she had seen earlier in the cafeteria. The teacher wasn't there just yet so she turned to the girl and introduced herself. "Hi, I'm Sophia. Nice to meet you.". Before the other girl could reply, the teacher finally came in. She was tall and had the looks of a model, but here she was teaching in a school for mutants. "My name is Ms. McCain. I am the teacher in charge of the Science division here at the Institute. My associate, Mr.Wells teaches our Engineering and Shop classes. I won't lie, I expect a lot from my students. I know that everybody here is capable of achieving greatness and I hope to play a big part in your inevitable success. With that said, I won't dilly-dally any longer. We will be discussing our very own mutations as well as notable others and you will have project that counts as half of your grade. That however will be later on this year." She went on like that for a few more minutes before she paused as a student that was late came in. Sophia recognized her as Katherine. She looked mortified as Ms.McCain grilled her and she sat down on the other side of the new girl. The other girl leaned over and gave her some cold water and a tissue. Her actions did not go unnoticed by the teacher and she was banished to the front row. They spent some time going over the syllabus and Ms.McCain passed out some textbooks to them all. As Ms.McCain handed Sophia a textbook, she looked her in the eye. It was a most unsettling feeling, as if she was staring straight into her very soul. When she turned, Sophia gave a noticeable shiver. She glanced at the clock and saw it read 8:50. "Great, only forty more minutes of this creepy class."

Nadia had avoided her like the plague all through breakfast, though she had made a point to socialize with the other students cheerfully. Liz had been annoyed at first, she still had so many questions to ask the woman about the schedule, but after another cup of coffee and some food she felt better. Though only slightly. She read through her schedule several times but it still made her feel uneasy. The bad part was, there wasn't even anything wrong with the schedule. It all made perfect sense the way Nadia had explained it.

She had finished eating ten minutes before class started. "Genetics and Mutation" didn't seem like something she wanted to be first in for, so after finding the classroom she waited a few feet down the hall from the room for other people to be there. Liz figured she could hide behind the group of students and find a quiet desk at the back of the room.

What seemed like ages later people started to come down the hall and into different classrooms. One girl had arrived just as the bell rang and Liz recognized her. With a sigh she walked to the door of the room, pausing for a moment in nervousness. She couldn't exactly run out of the room if she started to get paranoid... Taking a few deep breaths she Prepared to walk through the door when a hand on her shoulder stopped her. She flinched and stepped away from the door to see the sciences professor who had examined her blood samples when she had first came to the school. She couldn't remember the womans name but she remembered her being very straightforward.

"I know you may be hesitant, but trust me. You will be fine."

Liz looked off to the side and nodded before walking into the room. The teacher walked in after her and began speaking to the class immediately. Liz forgot the womans name instantly and sat at an empty desk at the very back at the room, casting a wary gaze on the rest of the class before pulling a notebook and pen out of her bag. Before anything could get started, the winged girl from yesterday walked in late and flustered. Liz turned a blank expression onto her and wondered why her hand was injured. She wouldn't ask, it wasn't her business. But she could wonder. Rather than dwelling on things though, she chose to ignore all the other students. The class continued with Liz taking random notes, and avoiding the teachers gaze whenever she walked past. Glancing at the clock she could see the class was nearly over. Well, one down, six to go.

Katherine clutched the frozen water bottle in her hands. She stuffed the towel in her backpack, knowing she would probably need it later. The coldness of the bottle seeped through her skin, and was making her hand numb. Well, numb was better than in pain. All of a sudden, a loud ringing noise blasted through the building. Being unprepared, Katherine made an “ARGH!” of annoyance and clapped her hands over her ear, and she started cursing in Russian. When she gets angry she has been known to slip into Russian.

When the hideous noise stopped, the people started filing out of the room. Katherine blinked, and got up, following. This was her first time in a school with other people. She couldn’t exactly attend a human school. People would start getting confused.

The water bottle was still clutched extremely tight in Katherine’s hands. The cold was actually getting painful. Katherine was not, in any way, resilient to the cold. The cold from the bottle was sending needle like pains through her hand. Katherine sighed, and put the water bottle into her bag. She walked next to Shalie as the left the room, and kept stride with her. “Hey, sorry for getting you into trouble.” Katherine sighed.

Shailene was walking out of the classroom when Rin walked up to her. “Hey, sorry for getting you into trouble.” Rin sighed. Shailene looked at her surprised that Rin thought it was her fault. "I wasn't paying attention even before you came in. Anyway more importantly how's your hand? Did you make sure to wrap the towel around the bottle so your hand didn't get too cold?" Shailene herself had made that mistake once but she was used to the cold so it wasn't bad just a little uncomfortable. She looked at Rin's hand anxiously. "How did you do this anyway? Do you want me to go with you to the infirmary? It looks bad." Shailene looked up at Rin worriedly.

Katherine looked at Shalie. "I wasn't paying attention even before you came in. Anyway more importantly how's your hand? Did you make sure to wrap the towel around the bottle so your hand didn't get too cold?" Katherine's face turned into a scowl. She hadn't thought of that. Oh well. "How did you do this anyway? Do you want me to go with you to the infirmary? It looks bad." A little tingle went up Katherine's spine. She could already smell the cleaning alcohol and the fear prickling on the back of her neck. She shook her head. "Nah, I think I'll be fine." Katherine glanced back down at her hand, and realized she would need something new to wrap it with. She looked back at Shalie and answered her second question. "I did it to myself, well, by accident really. The walls were reinforced." Katherine left it at that and shrugged, letting Shalie put the pieces together by herself. "Want to come with me to my room so I can get a real bandage for this?" Katherine wanted to get it done before next period so it didn't get infected.

The bell brought Dom back to reality. He had spent the last half hour more or less in a stupor. Mutant children filed out of the classroom, going to their next class. Dom had another hour of mathematics to go, and as such wasn't going to move from this classroom. But, there was hope that this class may include some of his peers, rather than insignificant brats.

“We have about seven to eight minutes between each class. Why don't you go stretch your legs a bit. Just, try to get back here on time. Okay?” Mr. Hart said as he was shuffling some papers around on his desk. He seemed nice enough, and Dom appreciated that he wasn't acting like a complete prick for being late. Those wings of shadow though....bothered Dom.

“Alright, guess I'll be back,” Dom replied. With that, he exited the classroom and stepped into the hall. There was a cacophany of mutants in the hallway and Dom immediately rolled his eyes. Some were talking in little groups, others were quickly making there way to and fro to get to class. Others were just goofing off. Dom saw a couple different mutant powers being displayed in the hallway, it was like they were using them for entertainment. There was a small girl who was making origami birds flit about the the hallway, and another boy making loud firecracker noises by snapping his fingers, complete with bright red sparks shooting forth in am impressive glimmer. A strange mixture of jealousy and superiority was churning in Dom's mind. These kids don't know how easy they got it. Have fun using your paper birds when hatred comes breaking down your door.

Towering over most of the younger kids and there being only a slight few ones around Dom's age and stature, Dom easily cleared a path down the hallway as he walked toward the water fountain. In the sea of faces, Dom recognized Alex, being the only other boy tall enough to be over the other kids. Dom glanced his way and nodded towards him, as if to say he was sorry for running out on breakfast.

Bright golden hair was filing into a classroom that Dom immediately identified as Lydia. Dom smiled at that, glad that she was doing better and attending classes- and that she put a brush through her hair. Behind her, the unmistakable wings of Katherine and another girl with darker hair and darker features were also walking down the hall.

Seeing Katherine left Dom with a bad taste in his mouth; in truth he didn't care much for the girl. Someone who causes more problems than they are able to fix are wasteful at best, especially when someone else has to clean up their mess. Twice he has cleaned up a mess she has made, and he won't do it again. Next time, Kathy, Dom mentally mocked her, can pick up her own broken pieces or fall apart all together, he didn't care which.

Dom noticed there was a hunched over boy standing lamely in the middle of the hallway. He was not particularly short or crippled looking...he just looked lazy. The boy was looking intently at a patch of ivy that had grown inside the building from the ajar window. It was strangely unsettling for Dom, because he could have sworn he could see the ivy move ever so slightly further and further through the window and onto the wall inside.

Dom reached the water fountain and took a drink from it. BANG! A particularly loud mutant-made firecracker went off and sparks rose into the air in an array of colors. The tender leaves from the ivy did not take well to the heat given off by the sparks, and the ends became singed and curled as they withered away.

Dom had never seen someone's mood change as quickly as that hunched over boy's. His eyes went wide with a rage that he did not attempt to mask in the slightest. No one else seemed to notice the boy, but Dom knew nothing good could come of this. So, instead of reacting to someone's poor decision as he did with Katherine, Dom decided to be proactive this time. Striding over to the boy, Dom put his hand on his shoulder from behind him.

“Hey buddy, everything all right?”
