Description

Kaori Kita
Kaori Kita is a first year high school student who’s life is what some people may call chaotic. Since she was young she has always been interested and proficient in sports. Once she entered high school, she decided to get as involved with clubs as possible. Judo, kyuudo, volleyball and swimming are on her list.

Kaori exudes energy, maybe a bit much sometimes, and her mood swings are becoming famous amongst the school. Whether she’s happy or angry, she does everything to the extreme, so you’ll either have a hyperactive happy girl, or a terrorizing tornado of doom.

She admits she can be a bit of an airhead, and good grades don’t come easily to her, but she never gives up and always tries her hardest.

Kaori tries her very hardest to make friends, though most people think she is quite an odd character… Of course everything changes when she gets caught in a mood and accidentally smacks a new kid in the face. Whether it changed for better or worse, Kaori doesn’t know.

So begins...

Those in the surounding courtyard froze as the smack echoed around them. Stunned silence pierced the usual manic atmopshere in a way that can only be described as awkward. Kyouseke didn't realize any of that. All he could feel was the stinging redness of his cheek. Although it hurt, he didn't reach up to feel it. The burning sensation was the most he'd felt all week, but it still confused him.

His eyes wavered down upon a girl a bit shorter than he was, her hand still raised. Her eyebrows were furrowed and her lips pursed tight, Gareki recalling this usually was a sign of anger, but he was so bad at telling it could be something else.

but what did I do? he asked himself. He was pretty sure he hadn't been staring at her, and if by accident he did, not in an obscene way. It would then fall down to how he must've wronged her in some way, biut this was his first day, and he didn't know anybody. So many questions went racing through head, but most of all was WHY.

He couldn't even mutter that though. He just remained in stunned silence starring at the girl.

Kaori paused as she realized the weight of the situation around her. She had just smacked a guy across the face and hadn't even realized this. Sometimes her temper got the better of her and she couldn't control herself. Blind with rage is what they say. The people around them had all went silent too and were staring at her, but one pair of eyes caught her attention. The piercing green eyes of the man she had smacked. Thats when she realized her hand had been on his cheek all too long.

She pulled it back and laughed awkwardly before announcing loudly for everyone to hear, "Ahah! There was a bug on your face! A bug!" She grinned and laughed, keeping her eyes away from him. Someone came from behind her and tugged her short hair. "Excuse Kita-chan, she's a bit of a klutz and an airhead!" It was the voice of Rin Tanaka, a girl that Kaori wasn't a huge fan of. She looked at the taller girl and feigned humour. "Haha, yup.. Thats me! Uh, uh... Better go! Class is soon!" She laughed far too loudly and then ran off before the guy could say anything. Could this day get worse?

Rin rolled her eyes. "That girl's a weirdo, sorry 'bout her.Might wanna get that mark checked out, looks real red." She smirked and laughed and walked away.

Kyouseke stood there a moment longer before noticing he had dropped his bag in the confusion. He leaned down to pick it out, and out of the corner of his eye he noticed people on the outskirts whispering while pointing in his direction. He gave a dull sigh and began to walk towards the doors of the school. Inside he found he shoe locker, and with methodical carelessness, dropped his school shoes in front him and slipped them on.

"I bet he's an ex-boyfriend, that would explain it" he heard a whisper from down the lane. Kyouseke may not be good at anything, but he had sharp senses.

Through the hallway he began to march looking for his homeroom. He had memorized the school's layout so he wouldn't get lost. If he was anything, it was efficient.

"Maybe he's just a perv, you know I bet he tried something with her," he heard a group of girls giggling in their own whispered tones. Miraculously, they fell silent as he approached and walked past, only to hear the slight sound of suppressed giggling as soon as they assumed he was out of ear shot.

Kyouseke sighed. Well, that could've gone better. I'll just keep my head down and those rumors will pass over quick.

He made his way into one of the boy's bathrooms and put his pack on the counter. He studied his own face in the mirror. The redness had not subsided, but at least the pain had. His face would be red when he was forced to make his introduction. He should probably care, but he didn't. It came easy when you don't care about anything.

He walked out of the bathroom towards his assigned classroom, 1-B. With only a few seconds to spare, he walked through the open doorway.

Kaori had rushed over to the nearest bathroom as fast as she could after changing her shoes at her cubby. She threw herself into a stall, locked it and sat on the lid to the toilet, face falling into her hands as she breathed. Okay, no need to freak out... He was just shocked. He totally believed it was a bug, right? Of course! Because it was a bug! Was. A. Bug. She tried to convince herself as she sat there. It wasn't until more girls came in giggling that she snapped from her inner monologue.

"What a freak Kita-chan is. Who would just do something like that?" One girl laughed to what seemed to be three others. Another girl turned on a tap and spoke, "I wonder who he is though? He's also weird. What's with all that hair in his face? I wonder if he's cute."

Kaori paused and frowned. She hadn't really paid attention to the guy other than his weirdly green eyes. How abnormal. She supposed they looked cool, but she had been to busy fleeing than to pay attention to the rest of him. She stood from her spot and charged out of the stall with a plastered on smile and washed her hands and left. She heard the girls all go silent and then burst out in laughter. Kaori just shook her head, rolled her shoulders and moved along to her class of 1-B. She slammed the door open and grinned, "Good morning class!" She yelled.

Other people glanced at her, some waved hesitantly, and others just ignored her. Kaori just went over to her seat which was the perfect position. It was against the wall to the windows so she could stare outside at the small courtyard some people ate lunch at, and it was the second from the back so she could doze off without the teacher seeing. Plus, no one was behind her, so she didn't have to worry about anyone tattling.

He saw the teacher before he entered the room. She was tall and frail looking, her simple brown hair parted evenly down her face revealing a kind smile with soft eyes to match. Kyouseke guessed she was somewhere in her late twenties or early thirties, though he had always been a terrible judge of age. To him, she seemed like the type of teacher that would have trouble standing up for herself if trouble in the class arose, but only time would tell.

Kahori Nakane, Kyouseke recalled her name.

Alright well lets get this over with, he thought with some distaste.

"Good morning class," Kahori said gently. "Now please settle down. Please help me welcome our new student. I'll let him introduce himself."

"Thank you, Sensei," Kyouseke said dryly. He then turned to the class. "My name is Kyouseke Gareki."

There was a pause in which the class waited for him to say more, but instead he went to sit down. Kyouseke spied only two open seats, and one of them was right in front, which he would loathe to have. The second one, although surrounded by people, gave him some distance from the board. Second row from the window, second seat from the back. As he went to his seat, his eyes opened wider when he spotted the girl that had slapped him sitting in the back row, diagonally to his new spot.

He paused only for a moment before continuing towards his seat and sitting down, placing his bag next to his chair.

The class was left in awkward silence.

"Uhh, alright then!" Kahori picked up. "L-let's all make him feel right at home then."

Kaori, who had been sleep deprived last night, decided she might just take a nap during the first chunk. It was on English... And who really needed to know another language? She rest her head on her hand and closed her eyes. She felt the nice warm sun on her skin and wanted to yell in delight. It had been a while since she got the right sleeping atmosphere in class. She might have actually gotten some rest too, if it wasn't for the new kid.

He introduced himself as Gareki Kyouseke in a rather drab and bored tone. Kaori sighed and peeked her eyes open softly, only for them to shoot wide open when she saw him. The guy she had slapped before was in her class. now that she got a better look at him, he was kind of plain and normal looking. Fluffy long black hair, pale skin, average to tall height... The only thing interesting were those eyes. But enough about that.

Kaori froze as he walked on past her and sat down in the seat diagonally behind her. She prayed to the Japanese Lords that he didn't recognize her... But then again... Maybe she needed to apologize. Maybe at lunch? With some kind of gift? She would have to figure that out. For the meantime, she looked back out the window in though, and eventually dozed off, slamming her cheek against the desk as she passed out. Of course, this didn't faze her, she just kept napping.

The class time sludged by, like it always did. Kyouseke filled his time with his usual half-listening while either twirling his pencil or scribbling in his notebook. It's not like he's actually good at drawing, but he's noticed how it seem to make class go faster. Halfway through class he pencil flung from his hand onto the floor And skidded a distance. He had to reach behind him and he caught sight of the girl snoozing in the corner.

"Mmm..." He groaned. And they call me the lazy one?

He looked down at the pencil laying uncomfortably close to her feet. He cast a quick glance at the girl sitting to his left. She had been watching him, but as soon as he glared at her she made an embaressed squeak and hurried her nose in a textbook.

Kyouseke sighed and once more tried to reach for his pencil. He was almost there, his fingertips brushing against the eraser. If he just stretched a little more...

Except at that moment he lost his balance. With a surprised yelp, he tumble onto the ground, bumping into the desk next to him and making a loud, grating noise. The class fell silent and stared at him.

He blinked awkwardly, his mouth slightly left open in embaressment. He was pretty sure his cheeks were even redder than before.

"Pardon me," he said quietly. He forgot to pick up his pencil as he took his seat, head lowered.

Kaori jumped from her sleep and wiped the drool from the corner of her mouth as she heard a loud thump to her side. It took a moment for her to realize the new kid had fallen over in his seat and the whole class was ogling at him. She blinked in surprise at his face laying close to her feet. He picked himself up and excused himself to the class. She looked down to her feet to see a shiny black mechanical pencil laying there that he must have been reaching for. She scooped it up and looked at him and then the pencil. She smirked and tucked the pencil behind her ear and laid her head down to nap again with an evil giggle.

Kyouseke was just able to shrug off what happened. It came easy when you don't really care what other people think. In fact, these incidents might just convince the others to leave him alone, with was fine by him. He wasn't here to make friends, he was here to get through high school as efficiently as possible... though he must admit today hasn't been going very efficiently.

When the period ended and everyone started filing out, Kyouseke casually started to follow, waiting until he was one of the last ones to avoid any confrontations.

"I hope you didn't find the class too boring," Kahori spoke kindly, in a way it was obvious she was joking around.

"Not at all, Sensei," Kyouseke said plainly. Even though he did find it boring, he was more polite than that.

"You know," Kahori began while shuffling through some papers and setting them aside, "joining a club would ease your transition into our school. It's worth thinking about!"

"I'll think about it," Kyouseke lied.

"Good!" Kahori gave a relieved sigh. She peered over to the back of her classroom and spotted Kaori still snoozing at her desk. She groaned like this hasn't been the first time this has happened, and launched one of her erasers and it got Kaori straight in the head.

"Kita-san! How many times do I have to tell you to sleep in the nurse's office, not my classroom!" Kahori hollered. Though she tried to put an edge to her voice, it was obvious she found it at least a little amusing.

Kaori's head poked up and she groaned in pain. "Nakane-san, the view isn't as nice in the nurses office!" She whined, calling the teacher by her first name. She had met the woman in the summer before school term had started, and had gone about calling her by her first name even after knowing her as a teacher. She knew it annoyed the woman to no end, but she couldn't break the habit. Kaori was one odd girl after all.

She sluggishly got up and walked over to the front of the class where she plopped the eraser down on the woman's desk. She gave her a sleepy smile. She barely noticed the boy standing by, observing. The pencil was still stuck behind her ear.

Kaori blinked as he walked by her and out the door. She blinked again and followed after him. He wasn't a very nice person, but he was interesting. She walked behind him slowly, though she usually walked far faster. He had a lazy drawl to him.

"Ne, ne, what was your name again, bug-boy?" She asked curiously. Another part of Kaori that annoyed people was her boundless curiosity and the fact that she never gave up on getting what she wanted.

Bug boy? This better not be the start of some nick name, he sighed to himself. He wondered for a moment if he kept silent if she would just leave him alone, or get bored or something, but he could already tell that that wouldn't be the case.

"Gareki Kyouseke. I'm not sure you want to be following me around, I'm not very interesting."

He stopped when he reached the vending machine and put a few coins in. A moment later the coins came back out the dispenser.

He sighed. Must be out of order or something... he though to himself.

"Hmm?" He turned around and saw the girl was still there. "So is there something I can do for you?"

Kaori didn't answer his question, instead she snatched the money from his hand and held it between her two palms and prayed quietly under her breath, "Oh juice god, oh vending machine god, bless me with good fortune!" She knocked on the front of the machine three times and then stuck the coins in. She grinned when they stayed inside. "Good machine, take bug-boy's money..." Koari had already forgotten his name again. She pressed a random juice button and paused when nothing came out.

"Hmm... Nothing to do but..." She muttered as she backed up a little, cracked her knuckles, cracked her neck and then flung a roundhouse kick to the machine. "HIYA!" There was a moment of silence, Kaori staying in the kick position, before the rattle of juice falling into the bottom of the vending machine. "Ah... It actually worked! I didn't think it really would!" She laughed in amazement and leaned down. "Oh." Inside was two juices instead of one. She pulled them out and inspected them. One peach nectar and one milk tea. Her face wrinkled at the tea. She shoved it towards him. "I don't like milk."

Kyouseke gritted his teeth and took a step back. Great, this girl's insane, he thought before quickly composing himself. The energy this girl was exuding engulfed him, making him feel tired, as if his body was trying to compensate for her. Suddenly, what she said clicked.

"Hey, my name's not," he paused and took one look at her. He knew it was futile. He sighed and, defeated, reached for the tea. "Thank you," he mumbled quietly. At least the tea would calm his nerves.

Not for long though. He suddenly came upon the stark realization that this back and forth they'd been having all day was the most he'd interacted with anyone in... well, years. Probably ever. The very thought drained him and made him wobble unsteadily. People tended to get the wrong idea about him. He was okay with simple social interactions as long as it wasn't tiring. But this... was beyond that. Beyond weakening.

He forced himself to sit down on the nearby bench and take a big gulp of the tea. Just as he imagined, it was rather soothing.

"Sorry about that, it's just I..." He paused before deciding to tell the truth, "you're very... enthusiastic. It kind of overwhelms me." He took another long drink before continuing.

He knew the polite question to ask. "What's your name?"

Kaori paused and laughed awkwardly, scratching the back of her head. Very enthusiastic. That was one way of putting it, and it was mostly the reason why people didn't hang around for long.

"Kaori Kita! World class judo star! World class kyuudo star! World class volleyball player! And more! There was this one time when I totally rode a horse and shot an arrow at a burglar who was trying to steal a ladies purse! Well, maybe it wasn't a horse... just my bike.. and there was no burglar... But I did help an old lady! She was really..." Kaori paused when she realized she was ranting again. She laughed awkwardly and then sighed. "Sorry... I kind of get carried away. A lot."

You can say that again, he thought to himself. It was as if every word circled around him, buzzing constantly and draining his life force. Luckily he had a younger sister that was much the same way, so it wasn't entirely foreign to him. He was able to withstand it without so much as a facial twitch.

He sighed, and looked down to break his eye contact. "Don't get me wrong. I have a lot of respect for people like you. People who can throw around energy like it's a never ending resource." He paused as he cleared his throat. "You... should be proud of it, I guess is what I'm trying to say."

He wondered if he came off sounding condescending or insincere. He knew his voice wasn't the best at clear communication. In a way, it could be assumed as sarcastic, but he didn't mean it that way.

Kaori wasn't used to getting compliments, so she sat there quietly for a while before the bell chimed. She stood up and stretched. "Back to class." She yawned just thinking about all the math that was about to come at them. She was about to offer to walk back with him before she saw Rin walking down the hallway towards them. "Ah! I better hurry, have to ask sensei about something." She bowed shortly to him and ran off without a goodbye. She rushed into class before there was confrontation. She really didn't like that girl.

Kyouseke let out a long breath, almost like resurfacing for air. He scratched the back of his head while pondering the bad luck he'd had so far in the day. As he brought the cup to his lips to take in the last bit of drink, he heard the sound of footsteps stop abruptly next to him. He opened one of his eyes to see what was going on.

It was the tall girl from before.

She bent over slightly to get more on his eye level while he was sitting down. "Hmm, you okay? She didn't slap you again, did she?" She ask, a little too sweetly. She straighten herself up while crossing her arms behind her back.

Kyouseke stood up, slightly surprising Rin doing so. He thought about what happened seconds before with the vending machine; the feeling of drowning in a sea of words and energy. In most ways, it was more shocking than the slap.

He began to walk away before stopping at the trash can. He paused as he opened it. "Yah, I guess she did," he said plainly. He began to walk towards the classroom. In the distance behind him, he heard a girl call out for Rin.

"Come on, we're going to be late!" One said.

"Why were you talking to him?" A second girl said, a bit condescendingly.

"I don't know, he's kinda looks like the rebel type," a third said provocatively. Kyouseke just assumed it was sarcasm. At least he hoped.

They really run their mouths.

He walked into the classroom just as the bell rang.

Kaori heard his chair move behind her, but didn't bother looking. She was already off in her own land wondering what her clubs would be doing after school and when she had class cleaning duty and the like. Math went over her head as it always did, and she stared at her textbook uselessly, the numbers looking like a pile of vomit on paper. She tapped her pen to a soft beat and sang songs in her head to try and pass the time by for lunch.

Luckily math class past quietly, which was something he was supremely grateful for. This day had been so hectic that he wondered if it was just going to be his life now.this period of peace gave him hope of preserving his life style.

His lunch wasnt anything special. He just stopped by a convience store on the way to school. It was bland and not particularly healthy, but Kyouseke didn't care much about those things. While he took a mouthful, his eyes darted between his food and his book. Not a particularly interesting book, but it filled his time, and better still, discouraged anyone from trying to interact with him. It was a little trick he picked up during his childhood.
