She was on his heels, not daring to let Will out of her sight. She knew that Moon would take care of the kids, it was Tori, Devan, and Will's job to clear a path and get them the hell out of dodge. She had to trust that her small little crew could get through this, she had to focus on herself right now. Anything else would get her killed.
Zara was right behind Tori, arrow knocked and ready to penetrate some squishy skulls. Despite the adrenaline pumping strong through Zara's fierce veins, she was eerily calm. Nothing mattered, nothing fazed her. She was a stone wall, she dulled out everything that wasn't important. The scared whimpers from the children behind her, the tension in the room. Everything was gone except that gap between the doors when William pulled them open.
She unleashed her arsenal with such a fluid grace that she appeared superhuman. The ones closest to the door slumped to the ground within a few seconds. She wondered if Jace saw, if he was impressed.
'Probably not,' she thought. The boy was more of a stone wall that she was. He wasn't focused on her, he was focused on the decaying corpses that were trying to force their way into the church.
Tori didn't need a command, she moved forward as Zara cleared her a path, She used her hunting knife on the one's closest to her, trying to keep from attracting the monstrosities with noise. The crimson haired warrior wasn't bothered with the blood that now splattered her face from the first few enemies she felled, or the corpses that fell at her feet. She was no longer bothered with morality, they were no longer humans, they were only in her way, a barrier that caused her group hard ship and it had to be dealt with. She stayed near Will the entire time they cleared the path out of the prison of a cathedral.
'safety in numbers' she told herself. It was more than that.
'If you can see him, you know he is safe, you can concentrate.' was the real reason. There was a semi clear path now.
“Guys, let's move! Keep the kids safe,” she motioned for the others to run through and out of the fray of the horde. They could move around the few stragglers and Moon would put them down, especially if the kids were in trouble.
Zara ran through, taking out a few in her path with a machete as she did. They needed a way to get out of here and fast. Walking or running wasn't going to cut it, they could just run into another horde, especially since the helicopter crash most likely was going to have them swarming the place. She saw it out of the corner of her eye and ran for it.
It was a forest green colored van, with enough room to fit all of their little group. She sprinted, keeping her blade ready in case of an ambush. She tried the handle and thankfully it was unlocked. She was grateful she wasn't going to have to break the window and draw the undead to her. Hopping into the drivers seat she quickly turned the key. It tried to turn over but wouldn't. The sound caught the attention of a few of the walkers and they started her way.
“Fuck,” she hissed and tried the key again. Still it revved with no sign of starting. She slammed her fist against the dash board.
“Come on...” then with one last turn it roared to life. She excitedly jumped from the seat and knocked an arrow, killing one of the undead that now headed in her direction.
“Come on guys! Get in! I can't drive this thing” She opened the large sliding door for easy access and began to pick off the walking plague sacks.
Tori looked up and smiled. She could always count on Zara to be a resourceful one. It was perfect. They would be able to get to a safer area and then siphon some of the other dead cars for gas. She waited behind for the others to head for the van.
That's when she saw him. She hadn't thought much of him sense the day everything went down, she had been to preoccupied with surviving and getting out of the city. Then with her brother's three day fight with the disease, and finally with her group. But there he was.
They had been friends once upon a time. They had even hooked up a few times, although they were nothing serious. She had been texting him the night her mother had gotten bitten. He looked good for a zombie. No pieces of flesh missing, no protruding bones. He was almost the right color. She wasn't entirely sure he was a zombie, but the way he walked. It was off.
'How long ago did he get bitten,' she thought. 'Could I have saved him if I had looked for him,'
“Benny?” she asked. She had to be sure. He turned, and her heart leaped with joy, he was okay. Then he opened his mouth and a terrible hungry hiss exited his lips. He was gone. She pulled back her knife but at the last minute she hesitated and she didn't strike with the force she normally would have. The blade didn't enter deep enough into the skull. It did get stuck. She tried to pull it out but it was stuck. She reached for her pistol but it was too late.
Benny had her on the ground before she could release it from the holster. She tried to push him off but he was too strong for her. She knew that she would be gone in minutes.
Zara watched helplessly from the van as some of the crew entered. She tried to shoot the man that had gotten Tori to the ground, but it was no use. She couldn't get a clear shot. For fear of shooting their fiery second in command. She stayed her bow.
