Zetsukuro: Shinzui Kitsune Clan

Introduction

The Spirit Fox clan started out when a samurai named Toshi Himura, a retainer to the esteemed Yoshimitsu clan, fell into disgrace. Under the samurai code, he was to commit seppuku, but Himura possessed a higher sense of self-preservation than many samurai of his time. Rather than do the ‘honorable’ thing and end his life, he fled the clan’s grounds and went into hiding, living his life disguised as a peasant. This was not very easy, as the poor man’s life was fraught with constant hardship, having to steal for food, beg for clothes, and being assaulted by petty criminals. Although skilled enough to defend himself without a sword, he had to be careful. The Yoshimitsu clan was on the hunt for him, as they would not tolerate having a disgrace on their name. Exposing the clan’s fighting style in any way would be a dead giveaway.
Image

Things finally came to a head after one and a half years when Himura was set upon by archers working for the Yoshimitsu clan. Although the clan believed him to be dead, he was able to survive and ended up floating down a river. He was rescued by a middle class family in a small farming village who cared for him in his wounded state, and although he was grateful to them, he was at a loss for what to do with his life. He would get an answer.
Image

One night during a particularly bad series of cramps, Himura had a vision. In his vision, he had a revelation in which a kitsune spirit with nine tails came to him and told him that his old life was over, that he must start a new life, and not only that, but start his own clan. His days of being a samurai were over. If he were to live in the shadows, then he was to use them to his advantage. The kitsune in his vision demonstrated this by leaping into a pool of murky darkness and pouncing on him from behind. As the vision faded, Himura realized what he had to do.
Image

Once he had recovered, Himura began travelling Japan, seeking out peasants in need of work or disgraced samurai who would not submit to ritual seppuku and told them that there was a way that they could live as freelance men. Together, they would continue to earn profit and carry out the work of others, but they would not be bound by strict codes. Instead, they would follow their own paths. Thus, the seeds of the yokai clan, named in honor of the kitsune that visited Himura in his dream, were sewn, and as the years passed, they became the assassins they are now…

☯ The Setting ☯

The setting for this role-play is feudal era Japan with the touch of fantasy. Creatures like oni and other fantasy creatures (also known as demons) may be seen and even the idea of 'spirits', and spells/magic may be allowed. Rural forests small towns far apart and vast fields and un-claimed land is the general geography of the area.

This role-play will revolve around the daily lives of the Shinzui Kitsune Clan.
By taking the idea of these legendary tales of the Kitsune, the Shinzui Kitsune Clan has developed it's veil of secrecy, and has allowed more rumors and stories to grow about these folk tales of the Kitsune. By wearing specific garb and ninja masks to veil away their identity whilst on missions has allowed those of superstitious belief who have rarely caught sight of a clan member to spread more tales of what they believed they saw in the flicker of the night.
The home is considered a compound, or a large set of connecting buildings. The Fox Clan's compound is located in a secluded section of the woods built atop a pleatue and nestled with in the side of a mountain. It stands behind a large rock walls behind a substantially large stone labyrinth. It often times appearing to be a temple of some sort to any travelers, stationed near the rocky cliffs and a few water falls in the bosom of mother nature and her bounties only several miles out from a moderate port town for transporting goods.

Main areas will include the bedding halls, the training halls, the kitchens, the shooting range, the barn, the upper and under levels of the main compound, and the storage building.

This role play is open for anyone to apply. We are looking for serious players.

Our clan home is located with in the Mountain's plateau. The port tow is just off to the right of the map.

Any un-marked ground is unknown Territory.

There is a port town off to the right of the mountains. There is also a labyrinth that leads up to the front gates of the ninja compound. The front of the labyrinth can be described as...

A large set of statues standing before an impressive stone maze. The entrance was in the form of a grave yard. Upon the large stone out front which appeared to be a grave marker. Zetsumie took a breath and read the words aloud as he moved taking up the reigns with in his right hand. "The young fox cried, looking to the sky, up on kurai mountain. If you dare to step inside, your entrance will be denied. It's here where the Fox bestows his wrath, on a dark and lonely path, on a dark and lonely night, a thousand spirits circling a burning light, a flower's in the hand that holds the chopsticks, beware there may be a few nasty tricks. I am but a messenger who brings this tragic tale, heed my words you who may try to steal my treasure, for I'll haunt you forever and ever. . . "

Types of charters and the social hierarchy.
Sempai/Teens are the older ones usually in their teens who may be looking forward to starting on their first few missions. Still green but have more combat knowledge under their belt.
Kohai/Children as well as Sempai/Teens are taken in by Kunochi/ female Adult Ninja, Shinobi/ male Adult Ninja and rarely Seniors. Seniors, Kunochi, and shinobi are care takers who become like parental masters and strive to teach their students their new way of life.
This clan works through a hierarchy. The top most is composed of Seniors making up the council. Generally the wisest and most experienced and seasoned of the clan. Under them comes the teachers, adults, and medical. And after the older teens, and finally the Kohai/Children, or the younger children. With age comes privileges and responsibility. Girls and boys are kept in separate sleeping arrangements.

Traditions Ceremonies and Clan Rules

Kohai are governed by rules which are strict, but fair.

A child or adolescent will remain a kohai until they have proven themselves on a mission. Once a kohai turns fourteen, they will be eligible for said mission. There will be a ceremony to commemorate them for missions in which they must undergo what is called The Night of Foxes.

The Night of Foxes is where a kohai walks through the garden and building after rigerious testing of their training. As the sun sets the adolescents receive a speech or two. They are tiered and sleep deprived and they are set to wander the compound and are randomly assaulted by seniors who hide in the shadows. If they can defeat four of the five seniors, they will be eligible for missions.

However, that does not make THEM a senior. That is something else entirely.
Also, kohai must be approved by their caretaker to partake in the The Night of Foxes.

As a sempai, you have more privileges. You will be considered an adult in the eyes of the clan, and be taken on more missions, and be allowed to eat with the adults instead of just your sensei, and if you are exceptional, you may be given your own team of kohai to train. However, you are still expected to be loyal to those ahead of you, such as a sempai who was promoted before you, or your sensei. A sempai cannot punish you, but your sensei CAN, as you are still his/her responsibility.

Kohai will be expected to under go sessions covering the ninja juhakkei during the day light hours.

If Kohai they have difficulty learning, they will be given assistance in their gray areas. However, any sign of intentionally avoiding training or skipping out on classes will be punished. Good training and hard work will be rewarded with time off later in the day for playing with other kohai, walking in the gardens and yards, or doing what suits their fancy (it must be within reason).

Older kohai will be granted certain privileges, such as being able to learn higher techniques, being able to stay up later, being allowed to accompany seniors into town visits, and dining with adults. However, they will also be expected to care for and mentor the younger ones, and if they abuse their privileges or the younger kohai's trust, then their privileges will be revoked. If a kohai sees another kohai (or anybody) mistreating another, they are obligated to report it. If they solve it with their fists, both parties will be punished.

4) You must be of proper age to drink. No children.
5) To become head of the clan you must either win a duel with the current leader or be appointed by the current leader. If the head of the clan dies before passing on his role the council will take the role into consideration and appoint a new leader.
6) Proper dress is required for formal events. No cleavage, flashing, or mooning. Clothing must come down to knees.
7) Courtships must be approved by your master.
8) You must ask for permission.
9) No copulation before marriage.

5. Kill only when necessary for survival.
[If threatened by conflict, competition or failure the ninja will always strive to redirect the end to his favor through any means necessary. And only as a last resort, he go for the death blow.

General in-play Terminology-

Rank and age are generally closely related but not always.
Anything not human or normal animals will be referred to as Yokai, Demons, a type of Yokai, or spiritual entity.

Shinobi- Stealing (into), spy, sneak thief.

Ninja-literal meaning: "stealth person") is a warrior and assassin, trained in the Japanese art of Ninjutsu (roughly art of stealth). Ninja, like Bushido and Samurai, followed their own special code of honor called Ninpo and contrary to popular belief the Ninja's specialty was not assassination but rather espionage

Kunoichi- Female ninja or practitioner of ninjutsu (ninpo).

Sensei- Teacher

Seinor- Seasoned warriors

Kohai- Begging student

Senpai- intermediate student

Senpai/Kohai side note- Senpai and kōhai are an essential element of Japanese seniority-based status relationships, similar to the way that family and other relationships are decided based on age, with even twins being divided into elder and younger sibling. Senpai is roughly equivalent to the western concept of mentor, while kōhai is roughly equivalent to protégé, though they do not imply as strong a relationship as these words mean in the West. More simply, these may be translated as senior and junior, or as an elder compared with someone younger in the family/company/organization—the terms are used more widely than a true mentor/protege in the West. There is usually no average separation in age between a senpai and his or her kōhai. A junior student will often refer to senior students as "senpai", and alumni will often refer to alumni from earlier classes as "senpai". This holds true particularly if events bring them together later on, such as joining the same company, serving on a board together, or simply being in a club or parent's organization at the same time. On rare occasions, a younger person may also be considered the senpai of an elder person if circumstances dictate—such as if the elder entered an organization or company at a later time than the younger did.

Jonin- 'High Man', 'Elite Ninja' or investiture; Jonin are generally highly-experienced shinobi with great individual skill who serve as military captains. Jonin act by establishing in office or to approve and sanction formally. Give orders to the chunin.

Chunin- 'Middle Man' ; Journeyman Ninja who are qualified to guide other ninja and lead missions. Chūnin have reached a level of maturity and ability that primarily consists of leadership skills and tactical prowess.

Genin - Ordinary ninja.

Compound- Where every one lives; the collection of buildings with in the clan's territory where every one is housed.

Dojo, or The Floor/Matt- Training hall area.

Litter- Group of mainly young Kohai and some times even Sempai who are not claimed by a specific Teacher or adult.

Pup, Cub, Kit- The younger of the kids.

Kabuki- is classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers. The individual kanji characters, from left to right, mean sing, dance, and skill. Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as "the art of singing and dancing."

~Common honorifics~

San - is the most commonplace honorific, and is a title of respect typically used between equals of any age.

Chan- is a diminutive suffix; it expresses that the speaker finds a person endearing. Thus, using chan with a superior's name would be condescending and rude. In general, chan is used for babies, young children, grandparents and teenage girls. It may also be used towards cute animals, lovers, close friends, or any youthful woman. It can be used for males in some circumstances, but in general this use is rather condescending or intimate.

Kun- is used by persons of senior status in addressing or referring to those of junior status, or by anyone when addressing or referring to male children or male teenagers. It can also be used by females when addressing a male that they are emotionally attached to or have known for a long period of time. Although kun is generally used for boys, that is not a hard rule. For example, kun can be used to name a close personal friend or family member of either gender. Also, in business settings, young female employees may also be addressed as kun by older males of senior status. It can also be used by male teachers addressing their female students.

Sama- more respectful version of san. It is used mainly to refer to people much higher in rank than oneself, toward one's customers, and sometimes toward people one greatly admires. When used to refer to oneself, sama expresses extreme arrogance (or self-effacing irony), as with ore-sama ("my esteemed self").

Kōhai -is a junior, the reverse of senpai, but it is not normally used as an honorific.
Senpai -is used to address or refer to one's senior colleagues
Gakusei- means student and is not normally used as an honorific.
Shi-
is used in formal writing, and sometimes in very formal speech, for referring to a person who is unfamiliar to the speaker.

Dono/tono-Tono, pronounced dono when attached to a name, roughly means "lord" or "master". It does not equate noble status; rather it is a term akin to "milord" or French "monseigneur," and lies in between san and sama in level of respect. This title is not commonly used in daily conversation, but it is still used in some types of written business correspondence, as well as on certificates and awards, and in written correspondence in tea ceremonies. It is/was also used to indicate that the person referred to has the same (high) rank as the referrer, yet commands respect from the speaker.

~Ranks~

Kyoshi -refers to an advanced teacher.

Hanshi-refers to a senior expert considered a "teacher of teachers". This title is used by many different arts for the top few instructors of that style, and is sometimes translated "Grand Master".

Meijin- awarded by a special board of examiners.

Shinobi no Sato, literally "village of shinobi,"
Their home is considered a compound of a large set of connecting buildings off in a secluded section of the woods built behind a large rock wall appearing to be a temple of some sort to any travelers, stationed near the rocky cliffs and a few water falls in the bosom of mother nature and her bounties only several miles out from a moderate port town for transporting goods.

Second Floor:
Restricted book room: Adults only for obvious reasons. Children, you can enjoy this room when you understand why the adults are so happy when they leave. Just kidding! It’s for keeping important documents and books based on clan history. For obvious reasons, it’s good to keep it limited on who enters.
Sewing room: Clothes are made here so don’t harass anyone holding a needle! (Take it as you will).
Meeting room: Place for the seniors to speak with the adults. A place for business. Under no circumstances will a child be allowed in here. Unless that child is actually a midget, then I’m sorry.
Offices: Where the elders will do important tasks. Others may be invited into the offices if needed but none are allowed in without official business.
Entrance to the Cellar is located here.
( Teh following was written in a very silly manner )
Floor One:
Dining hall: This is where large clan gatherings, celebrations, or ceremonies will be carried out if not here then it will be outside. You will also eat here. Or maybe in a closet if you’re in trouble. Maybe under your bed, but mostly here. This is supposed to be a social area. Sort of.
Bed Chambers: Well you sleep here… You also dream here and experience nightmares here. You’re stuff can be under your bed if you’d like although I don’t know why you’d do that when there is a perfectly fine chest at the end of your bed. Well unless you got the explosive chest then… Well it’ll be okay. Just focus on sleeping here.
Kitchen: I don’t see the need for explaining what this is but I’ll say it anyway. Food is made here. Yum-yum food. No bodies, please. Leave the bodies out. Unless you’re into that, then just… Just leave.
Dojos: Training hall. Where we get to beat your sorry @$$ around the mat because you can’t cry to mama. Because momma is DEAD! D-E-D! DEAD!
Theater Room: It’s supposed to be the entertainment room. With acting, maybe some dancing and special events such as a very important person nobody likes that wants to make everyone’s ears bleed by singing. So this entertainment. Right… Move along.
Wash Room: This is where clothing is either burned [Yay!] or cleaned [EW]. This is also where you get cleaned off enough to enter the bath house if you are covered in grime, which will probably be more than likely. Smelly piggy’s.
Tea Room: This is where tea ceremonies are held or for conversation to be held. Children are not allowed in the tea room unless they are accompanied by an adult. Don’t need tea being spilled now do we?
Weapons cache: As the name states, your weapons will be found along with weapons belonging to the others. Take your own unless being attacked by a rabid chinchilla, then that’s okay.
Closet hall: A hall closet. It keeps stuff in it. Clothing. Shoes. Things like bodies. Just don’t make it obvious you’re hiding one here.
Meditation room: You should sit down and think about what you did. You know what I’m talking about. You know it… Think. THINK! Meditate. Aim to reach a higher level of understand of what life is to you (42). What the meaning of life is (42). Things like that.
Book room: Well, there are a lot of books here. Scrolls… Books… Paper… Ink… Things you can read. No fire anything allowed, please.
Play Room: A room where young, children can be taken to so they can experience… Playtime. What the hell am I supposed to say for this? This is needless! I mean… Pie.

Underground:
Purgatory: Where newcomers are taken to be judged. So feel like a tiny insect as old people stare at you and test you.
Punishment room: This is my second favorite room. As the name says, you will be punished here. How you are punished depends on your sensei and the level of, for lack of better words, badness/mistreatment of rules is.
Cellar: Go to the second floor to find the entrance. Stairs spiral around each other, by the way. This is where wine, rice, and other provisions are kept along with perhaps spare building materials or decorations for the dining hall. This is a store room and thus items are generally stored down here. Just keep the bodies out. Entrance to the Pit of Woe is here, be careful where you step.
Pit of Woe: Tiny, tiny room with very dim lighting. It has nothing on the walls, ceilings, or floor (which is dirt. Compacted dirt. Smelly dirt. Maybe it's manure...) except for a tiny, tiny chair that pokes into your back every five seconds and makes your butt and legs fall asleep. It’s very uncomfortable – veryveryveryveryveryveryveryvery uncomfortable. It’s pretty much a closet – except smaller. You’re sent here when you’re bad. Really bad…. I mean REALLY bad. So bad that nobody wants to see your face, they just shove you in here for a few hours until they stop going, “NYUH!” when they so much as think of thinking about the possibility of thinking about your name. So yeah… Avoid getting sent here. Or you’ll be uncomfortable. Did I mention it’s uncomfortable. By the way, it has a spider web with a large, angry spider staring at you the entire time. And your hands are tied so you can’t kill it. So, ha!

Inner Outside: (Close to the buildings):
Forge: Weapons are created here. This place is so hard to get to you might as well learn how to fly.
Restrooms: Do I need to explain how to answer nature’s call? Because I’m not going to. You can explode in a golden shower for all I care.
Bath House: Well, normally if you smell you kind of need to BATHE. So, you take soap, smelly smelly soap that for some reason cleans you, then you rub it along your skin until it kind of hurts but you know the dirt is gone by then, then you rinse and repeat. Make sure you get between the toes and behind the ears. Under the fingernails too, please. Then make sure you dry off and get dressed. No streaking is allowed. Unless that’s punishment.
Gardens: Stuff grows here. Plants. You know the green things you see outside? Sometimes vegetables and fruit trees. Also, a large willow tree that watches you pee. Koi ponds with koi that eat your soul. Just kidding, they just stare at your soul.
Zen / rock garden: A garden of rocks pretty much. There’s sand with rocks placed about. Maybe randomly, maybe not. Depends. Also, you get a rake! Isn’t that awesome?

Middle Outside: (Further out but not too far):
Barn: Animals are kept here. Sometimes bratty children. Pigs, cows, sheep, horses, maybe a chicken. I like chickens. And polka dotted horses.
Pasture: Generally, horses graze here. And cows… So you can kill/milk them. You know, whatever comes first. It’s a pretty pasture, by the way. Too bad you can’t see it. It’s only accessible by senior members just in case a child wants to go rape a cow. That’d be bad.
Riding Ring: You learn how to ride here. HEE-YAH! Enjoy, try not to fall off. But if you do, cry.
Mews: Place where they keep hawks. Also, a cat makes this noise. Just thought I’d tell you.
Chicken Coop: Cluck-Cluck. Chickens live here. Yummy, yummy chickens.
Archery Range: You learn how to shoot a bow and arrow here. Try to avoid poking peoples eyes out with the arrows, please. If you do, then you’ll be forced to clean it up… With your face.
Wood Shed: Go chop down a tree and you’ll understand what the hell that is.
Torture shed: My favorite room. Bodies can be created here. They just can’t stay here. Accustom yourself to the various weapons and learn how to drive a man insane just by putting drops of water on his forehead or how to break an enemy into giving you their child’s favorite toy just by hanging upside down and whipping him. Or her. Maybe they have boobs maybe they don’t.
Hot Spring: You CAN use this as a reward for successfully completing a mission. You’ll mostly see old people here though. Hope you don’t mind. By the way, no bodies allowed.

Boundary:
Giant Wall: A wall… That’s giant. 4 feet thick stone makes up this wall. It’s a pretty big wall. It surrounds the compound, just saying. By the way, it’s really tall. It’s like 15 feet tall… Okay maybe it’s not THAT tall but it’s taller than your mom, that’s dead…. Lotta rock…. Lotta rock.
Watch Tower: It’s on the wall… You know, the giant wall? You just read about it? Ah! You have a brain! Anyway, it’s on the wall next to the gate. You just sit up there and stare at the people that want to come in. Just to, you know, make sure nobody is trying to smuggle in explosive babies.
Gate: Opens and Closes. To let people in… I hope you know what this is.

Beyond Boundary:
Waterfalls: Well. I’m not explaining this. No bodies allowed.
River: Not explaining this either. No bodies allowed here either.
Lake: Or this. Leave the bodies out of here too.
Cemetery: I was told to be serious here. So, dead people are buried here. You can come and cry and tell them you miss them and then get back to your regular lives until you feel guilty about being alive again. Then the cycle repeats. Pets are buried here too. Like fish. Yes, that creepy fish you kept sneaking food despite the fact you felt as if it could read your mind and then you had dreams that it was watching you… At any rate, this a serious place. No goofing around unless your mother was a clown. What? Oh, right. Serious place. SERIOUS PLACE. Dead bodies are , however allowed here. ; )

For Akimoto a the mission was a bit of an enigma. Such dangerous opposition with undocumented abilities combined to make one of the most exciting and terrifying ventures the shinobi could ever hope to embark upon. Of course it stood to reason that there was some kind of misinformation. It certainly would explain their choice of delegation to Sugahara, and would actually make for a rather bemusing joke. Yet he couldn't help but allow himself to fantasize about the nature of their mission. He could return home as Akimoto, the blade that tore through a kami. At the same time, it wasn't so far fetched an idea that he could never see the village again.

Zetsumie was coming with them but this did not bring any comfort to Akimoto. The elder ninja was a powerful force but his reputation wasn't in the safekeeping of his comrades. While the details were foggy, it was known that Zetsumie had lost his former apprentice. Through wild speculation or not, the situation was less then ideal. Zetsumie would get the job done if the task before them could be accomplished.

Strangely it was in Mashio that he found a private reserve of resolve. Though he would never admit it to himself, she was still superior in his mind. Yes today he had eked a victory, but he had done so with the addition of intense training. Weeks had been spent and milestones accomplished and it all amounted to little in their duel. Akimoto has the resolve and the nerve to grow, but it was Mashio who had the true potential. Though he hated it, he was gladdened for her company and more importantly her talent.

Preparations were hardly needed he had been in anticipation for an outing in some time. Food and supplies were constantly restocked in hope and all that he had left to accomplish was to ditch his armor in favor of stealth. He gave up the armor reluctantly but understood his mission demanded otherwise. Stealth wasn't Akimoto's strong point but he could fight with the best of them. All that remained would be to gather the various tools that could be needed.

When he returned to the appointed gathering he had said nothing. Moving about in his travel guise and abandoning most anything that resembled the armored-nin's iconic appearance. He had kept his contributions to himself for the time being, their journey would take the path decided by the eldest. Though Sugahara had expressed a wise course of action, he knew it would ultimately be decided by whomever had both the most prestige and loudest opinion.

Every journey changes a man -- even short walks after a heavy dinner can induce the kind of quiet reflections that are the origins of soul-searching. Whenever Sugahara Matsu had real difficulty with his reports -- when understanding simply wouldn't come -- he would put down his work and walk about the shinobi village or sometimes its immediate surroundings, and by the time he'd returned his frame of mind had sufficiently changed where he could suddenly make heretofore unseen connections between the differing and sometimes contradictory reports that passed across his desk.

If such effects could be felt in even the shortest of walks, what then could the old scholar expect from a months-long journey across the land? Was it as his old mentor Arashiyami Kozaburo had quoted? That 'he who returns from a journey is not the same man as he who left'? Sugahara Matsu found the prospect daunting.

Still, as the group began their journey the dark clouds lingering in his mind slowly but surely evaporated, leaving only rays of sunshine and warmth. The land was beautiful, the weather perfect and the company interesting. There was Zetsumie Aku, the living legend; mysterious, dour and capable. There was Akimoto Tsugaru, young and inexperienced but whose brashness was tempered by a quiet and introspective soul that Matsu sensed as being not altogether different from his own. Then there was Mashio Miyazaki, who was like an ornery house cat -- pleasant in limited doses, but fickle and prickly and prone to lashing out.

As their journey began, the company had walked more or less in a loose single file, so that each was in his or her own world, silent and isolated from the others. As the morning sun slowly climbed in the sky, the formation began to change at random -- sometimes Matsu found himself side by side with one of the other three, enjoying a conversation of small talk and pleasantries; other times all of them spoke together in their first real group dynamic. These conversations didn't last long -- as though Zetsumie's overbearing presence required Miya and Akimoto to bristle. One of the two youths would snap at the other, then there would be a short burst of heated comments before both retreated to their solitude once more. Matsu hoped that they would come to accept each other's company as the journey went on. For his own peace of mind of course, but for the strength of unity and success in their dangerous mission.

"Perhaps we can take a quick break here?" he offered to the group as the sun neared its peak in the clear blue sky. They'd been walking for several hours, and while the three chunin were no doubt ready and able to continue for days without rest, the old genin was ready for a good meal and a nap. He would find neither today, as lunch consisted of some root vegetables and a negligible bit of smoked mackerel; and the group was ready to move on almost immediately after the small meal. With a hearty sigh, he licked the grease from his fingers before wiping them on the grass, and moved on with the others.

After the shared meal the group's spirits seemed higher than before, and even the two competitive youngsters shared a few words that weren't snapped off between gritted teeth. Matsu found Zetsumie to be a fount of information when the stoic warrior deigned to speak -- the man was a walking treasure trove of exciting trials and tribulations from his storied past. Akimoto possessed a scholar's mind to be sure, and Matsu found their conversations to be stimulating, although a bit one-sided. And even the tempestuous Miyazaki was entertaining as well, although too eager to see slights where there were none.

"Oh dear," Matsu muttered as the small group crested a hill, where they saw a steep ravine barred their pass. The floor of the trench was no more than four or five paces deep, but recent rains had turned its steep slopes into mud -- the robed scholar didn't much like the idea of struggling to climb up that slippery, crumbling slope, or of falling back to the muddied floor again and again. He scanned up and down its narrow banks, looking for a drier space to traverse. Instead, he saw a short ways along the ravine that there were two trees -- one on either side -- whose high branches intermingled enough where passage could be attempted. Still, even the soft mud floor wouldn't make safe a fall from that height.

The kunoichi spotted the trees as well, and made her way to them. Placing her pack on the ground, she nimbly scurried up the trunk and disappeared into the branches. Matsu heard the leaves rustle and watched them fall to the ground as the girl made her slow progress across, her every footstep accompanied by an ominous snapping noise. Eventually she reappeared above them. "I don't think you three will be able to cross here," she admitted. "The branches barely support my weight."

"Can you cross?" the scholar asked, and predictably the girl stiffened as though at a challenge. "Of course," she snapped, as though daring Matsu to contradict her. When he said nothing she relaxed. "Probably," she added quietly.

For the majority of their trip Zetsumie seemed to trail be hind the group most of all. He was being rather silent and spoke only when spoken to or about. He had brought Kuro with him and had been leading the work horse along. As they neared their first little obstacle He remained silent seemingly observing the others. He seemed to allow his mind to wander for certain subjects abut for now he was focused on the task at hand. "Aki; Take Kuro and check for any alternative routs." He said leading the black horse over to the younger. "Be quick about it." He said before moving towards the tree the young girl scuttled up. "Come down from there we needn't be making any trip back home so soon. "Zetsumie Called up before removing a knife and going to fetch a thin sapling to see just how deep the w mud would sink if prodded in to. If worse came to worse they could always ax down some smaller trees and create a path. Zetsumie paused looking to Matsu as he stabbed the sapling in to the mud. "Don't supposes you're up for rope climbing?" he asked.

"That seems to be the best solution," Matsu agreed, gathering up some of his beard between his teeth to chew on fretfully -- an absent-minded habit he sunk into when worried. He wasn't afraid of getting muddied of course, nor was he particularly concerned about climbing the rope back up the other side, but the fat old scholar was worried about how the others would perceive him. He would have thought that in his old age that others' opinions of him wouldn't matter -- but he was so conscious of being unsuited for a mission such as this, that he couldn't shake the feeling that each of the others harbored those same doubts about him.

He looked up from the ravine to see Miyazaki climbing down from the far-side tree, having safely made the crossing. "Throw me the rope!" she called, so that she could anchor it to the tree for the others to scale the steep, loose mud wall. Matsu stepped back to give Zetsumie room. "It will be difficult to bring the work horse along," he acknowledged. "I hope Akimoto-sama finds another way across." It would be hard enough for Matsu to climb the rope himself, much less haul the pack animal behind!

Gingerly, Sugahara Matsu made his way down the side of the slope -- half sliding, half crawling. Nearly tumbling as his foot sucked deep into the muck, but he was able to wrench himself free without going sprawling at the bottom of the ditch. He made his way across the thin expanse to the other side, and grabbed the rope that Mashio Miyazaki had secured. He gave it a few experimental tugs before putting his full weight into climbing.

The muddy walls made the task difficult, but Matsu was surprised and pleased by his relatively smooth ascent. Sure, none of the other three companions were likely to be getting jealous of his skills in the near future, but he hadn't embarrassed himself either. With a groan and a helping hand from the kunoichi, the old genin hauled himself out over the lip of the ravine, rolling onto his back.

"Whoof!" he exhaled, before climbing to his feet and spending a few fruitless moments using handfuls of grass to wipe the mud off his arms, legs and belly.

"I half thought we were going to have to leave you behind, Matsu-sama," the girl joked, gracing him with a quick smile.

"Perhaps that would have been wiser," he laughed ruefully. He turned to watch the others.

My apologies, but I can't keep with this RP. As much as I hate to bow out, I think that will be the best course of action for me.
It was a really cool game for me though, very inventive characters and ideas.

Sure, but I'm not exactly fast either. <.<
I'll get out a post within the next day or two.

Cool, glad to see you're still around ^^ I'm sure Shadow wouldn't mind us posting in his absence, if you want to continue on our own for now? It's been over two weeks since his last response.

Re: Zetsukuro: Shinzui Kitsune Clan
