HISTORY

Derek was born in the heart of Mississippi with one seriously southern family. He grew up with their southern drawl, love for guns, hunting and camping every other weekend, and road horses every Sunday after church. He moved here at the age of 10 but the family traditions still stayed. Once Derek started high school, his dad started having him train heavily everyday after school so he could continue the family legacy of joining the marines.

Derek had so much ahead of him. He was in the best possible shape. His grades were perfect. He was even one of the most eligible bachelors at school thanks to his southern charm. But everything changed senior year...

It was no secret that Derek's mother was sick but no one thought that would be the thing to kill her. She was one stubborn fighter so when it took her away, it shook the entire family. Especially Derek. He had a very strong relationship with his mother. She taught him how to shoot, gave him his first horse, fought off any bullies, and always gave the best advice. With her gone, he completely fell apart. He spent so many nights crying until he found comfort in other thinks. He began to drink and go to parties where he joined the wrong crowd and started doing things even worse... Drugs.

The drugs and the drinking made the pain go away and Derek soon became addicted to the numb feeling it gave him. Even his sister would join in on occasion until he completely messed up.

Derek failed his drug test for the military and his now alcoholic father was furious. As soon as Derek got home, he beat him so hard that Derek had to go to the hospital. After that, Derek was thrown out of his house with no purpose and nothing. He didn't apply to any schools and it wasn't like any were going to take him at this point. His sister ran off because she couldn't deal with it anymore and now Derek has no idea she's infected. His father soon died of a heart attack and now Derek is even more alone than he was before.

Derek had to get two jobs in order to just get by since he was wasting most of his money on booze, drugs, and going to parties almost every night. It got to the point where he was actually having fun in the moment and seeming like he was genuinely enjoying his life. Except this was all just a mask because every time that high wore off, Derek felt that same emptiness again that consumed him. That emptiness that would make him cry himself asleep because at 19 he already saw how much of his life was thrown away and wasted.

When the apocalypse happened, Derek was one of the lucky ones thanks to the military training and constant camping trips. Derek knew what to do and how to try and survive as long as possible. He of course made sure to raid a liquor store and hide his stash. But what's going to happen once those run out and he goes through withdrawal? Of course there may be someone shining a light and making things better for him...

9 Hours until the Apocalypse

With it being a slightly warm day, Sarah left her window open a little so that the cool air could circulate around the room while she got stuck in her book about far away lands with Dragons, Lords, Ladies, Kings, and Queens. Most the time she wished she was apart of their world, because life in the mundane world was just uneventful unless you had the cash to actually enjoy yourself more often.

Considering others lives though, she was grateful, and lucky to be able to have the one that God had gifted her with.

Every night before bed, her mother would make sure that her little Angel had said her preys, and brushed her teeth before tucking her away for a hopeful nightmare free sleep. Those days were gone though, along with the stories that her mother told her before sleeping. Now Sarah had night terrors occasionally with the event of losing her mother so suddenly.

A knock echoed through her bedroom door, causing her to peel her eyes off of the page she was reading. "Sweetie, it's dad. Your dinner will be ready shortly, and your Grandma's come to visit you." Sarah hadn't seen her Grandma May in a couple of Months with being busy at school, then college, but she knew Sarah still loved her. She'd call her everyday on the house phone, and that made her happy enough.

After placing the book mark into the center of the pages she was on, she closed the book, and placed it onto her white bedside table before climbing off of her bed, and placing on the fluffy deep purple slippers that her grandma had brought her last Christmas. She loved Christmas with her family, but she wished every time that her mother could be there hanging up the tree decorations with her like she used to. After quickly wiping under her bottom eyelids, she headed out of her room with a thin cardigan on that was comfy to sit around in. She'd much rather laze around in her Pj's, but she had so much to do this afternoon. Once downstairs, and once she entered the Kitchen/Dining-Room, her grandma couldn't believe her eyes.

She was welling up with joy, causing Sarah to smile with gentle furrowed brows as she admired her grandma who was heading over to her with her aged hands reaching out to cup her Grand-daughters face. "Oh, Sarah.. you're growing into such a Beautiful woman. Your mother would be so proud, and you look just like her when she was your age." Sarah could feel herself tearing up again at the thought of her mother, and how she looked, how she smelt, and even the way she held her in her arms like a Guardian Angel. Now she was a Guardian Angel in Heaven. Even her father looked a little upset at the mention of his wife, so he diverted his attention to setting out the dining table with their Lunch. "Thank you, Grandma." Sarah hugged her gently before kissing her cheek that still felt soft for an old lady, and then helped her Grandma to her chair at the table.

"So how's your training going, Darling?" Her dad asked her as he placed his mother-in-laws food in-front of her, then handed her the cutlery. Sarah wasn't sure anymore if the course she was taking was what she still wanted, but the training was good. "It's good, I'm definitely a lot better now." That's what she thought anyway. "we'll do some later once I've taken your grandma home. Unless she wants to stay here for the night?" Grandma May shook her head gently while sipping on her soup. "I'd rather be in my own bed tonight. The girls are coming over to take me to Bingo." Sarah chuckled. "Still hoping to win Ten million that you almost got, huh?" She couldn't believe they had almost been rich, and then their worries about payments on their home, and other bills wouldn't have to be worrying anymore. "You betcha. We'll get it one day.. you'll see." Sarah smiled before glancing once to her father, then down at the food she hadn't managed to touch just yet.

08 00 HRS REMAINING

Dinner had gone extremely well with her family, but now she just needed some time on her own. She headed back to her room after spending some time with her Grandmother first, then headed upstairs to get comfy on her bed with the TV remote in hand. She pointed it at the red light while pressing one of the remotes buttons, making that red light turn to green which made the TV to jump to life.

It wasn't long before her phone began to buzz on her bedside table with an alert of a text message, so she paused a movie she had found randomly on netflix, and scrolled through her phone to read whatever the message was, and who from. It was her best-friend Chad. He had been out of town for a couple of months for his work, and was now inviting Sarah for just a couple of drinks. He'd make sure she'd get home safely by ordering a cab for the both of them, so he'd pay for the fair of course, because her house a couple of blocks away from his own.

Text
Hi, Chad, it's good to hear from you again. How was work? - I was thinking about having a night in with Netflix, so.. how about you hang out here instead? I got beers for us."
Text Sent

It didn't take him long to reply with a "Yeah, sounds awesome. I'll be over in an hour. Jumping in the shower real quick." She placed her phone back onto her bedside table as she got comfy again, watching some of the movie she had picked out. She had almost fallen asleep when she heard her father calling her from at the bottom of the stairs. With a groan, she got up, and headed to her bedroom door to peek her head out.
"Yeah?"
"There's a young lad at the door asking for you"
"He's my best friend. Let him up, dad. Thanks."

08 00 HOURS REMAINING

Derek awoke to the sound of his own head pounding. His room was always dark so he didn't fully register what time it was. He just got up, turned the lights on, and went to his closet to get dressed since he practically fell asleep naked. Derek did everything slowly out of fear he might throw up all over his floor. He barely remembered what he did just that he took some pills and got wasted right after that but most of the party was a haze. Of course Derek's cure to a hangover was to get himself not sober. He grabbed and bottled of whiskey and poured some of it into a coffee mug before brushing his teeth and dumping on cologne so he wouldn't reek.

Derek walked, or stumbled, out of his room and made his way outside. The motel was a mess but they had the cheapest rates and turned their heads to Derek's 'activities'. He looked a bit out of place from the way he was dressed and the cowboy hat didn't really help but Derek wasn't gonna let that stop him from being overly proud of his southern roots. He tipped his hat at an attractive young woman which earned him a nice giggle before he continued walking. He debated driving to his supplier tonight but he was in no state to drive. At least Derek was somewhat smart. He decided to pay a visit to his old babysitter instead since her job was near by.

He stumbled through the doorway of the door and couldn't help but laugh when he nearly knocked a stand over. He may have had whatever was leftover in his flask on his way here. He spotted Harley and called out to her loudly just in case she tried to ignore him. "Well if it isn't the prettiest southern belle in the whole store." He said charmingly and took his hat off to make a bow. "You're dear old friend, Derek, is in need of a loan because money's been tight, you see. And I just know you'd help out someone that's like family." He put his hat back on and gave her his best grin. "So what do ya say, Harley?"

07 00 HRS REMAINING

It had already been an hour since her friend had turned up to hangout at her place, and they had already had two beers each as they watched the new Mad Max movie. It had good reviews, so it was worth checking out.

"So how was work? did you manage to visit lots of places on your travels?"

"Yeah we did, it was awesome. We had to go to London for an entire week."

Sarah had always wanted to know what it was like there, especially since she had heard that mostly every English person was polite, and friendly. Even if you were a stranger passing in the street, people would politely smile at you, and sometimes even say, "Good morning." or, "Hello." Chad was definitely lucky. "I want to go there one day." she saw her friend smiling, so she smiled too, but frowned slightly as she gave him a questionable look. "I'll happily take you one day. All I have to do, is get permission from my boss, and if not!? well, I'd still invite you anyway." Sarah grinned at that.

Meanwhile in San-Francisco

Somewhere in the city, a homeless man was searching through the trashcans that sat in the public central park of San-Francisco. It wasn't cold luckily, so living on the streets during spring wasn't so bad for the homeless at this current moment. But still, no-one should be homeless, yet it happens. Just as he had sat down to eat, a crazed woman was making her way down the dark alley. She seemed distressed, scared, and looking back every couple of seconds as if she was worried of being followed. The homeless man had watched the entire scene unfold in-front of his eyes as he remained hidden in his boxes that were built for his home against the wind.

Everything had happened so fast. A man came out of nowhere, aimed his gun at the woman, then continued to shoot her multiple times in the chest, causing her to hit the ground in seconds. She looked sick, just like the same sickness that had appeared on the news in some other state, but it hadn't reached this part of town yet, therefore it wasn't even on the news..

yet.

The homeless guy couldn't believe his eyes.. he had either drank too much from his whiskey bottle that was wrapped up with a brown paper bag around it, or this really was happening. The woman who had been shot not too long ago, had began to get up from the ground slowly, with her eyes glazed over like she was blind. The homeless man remained quiet as possible, because something told him that nothing good could come out of this, especially since he had sprained his ankle earlier from looting, so running was out of the question.

The shooter had stupidly come back to the scene to put the woman into the back of his car, just so he can get rid of the body, but when he saw her actually moving with the bullet wound still in her chest where her heart would be, he realized something was definitely not right. She lunged at him when she got the chance, and began taking huge chunks of flesh out of his face while he was screaming, his blood just squirting out of him as this thing mutilated the right side of his face. He tried to push her off of him, but she was much too strong.

The homeless guy was now petrified, because once the screaming had stopped, he assumed the man was dead, especially since he could now here munching, and crunching sounds. He didn't dare to look, the smell was just as bad. He just had to remain quiet, then it will go away once its had its fill. Hopefully.

Sarah's House

The movie had finished, but the second they had gotten back onto the normal TV, the channels were interrupted by the news: The News Broadcast

Harley eventually ran out of things to do at work due to the fact that no one was coming in that day. With a sigh she sat behind her register and pulled out her World War Z book from her purse. She opened to her book mark and began to read with only the sound of the thunderstorm in the background.

She hadn't really been paying attention to the condition of the weather once she got completely engrossed in the book. She continued to read until she heard the bell ring to the entrance. She looked up from World War Z to see Derek stumble in, almost knocking over a display. She sighed, raising her hand up to face-palm, shaking her head. She stood up, walking around the counter while holding her place in her book with her index finger. "Well if it isn't the prettiest southern belle in the whole store. You're dear old friend, Derek, is in need of a loan because money's been tight, you see. And I just know you'd help out someone that's like family. So what do ya say, Harley?" As she closed in towards Derek, her boss came walking up to the front of the store, not looking very pleased. "Sorry Mr. Johnson. I'm taking care of it."

When Harley reached Derek, she reached up with her right hand to grab him by his ear and drag him towards the entrance. She released him when they were by the doors. "I'm gunna kill you." She smacked the back of his head with her book. "You can get me fired stumbling your drunk ass in here." She made a disgusted face when she smelled his breath... Or was that his B.O. Either way, he reeked. She sighed, raising her free hand to rub her temples, "Look Derek. The only money I have, I'm saving to refill my meds." That was the truth, but she also knew the reason he wanted money and because of that she wasn't going to give any to him. Even if he was the only person like family to her these days. Looking him over she frowned slightly. "You're still living in that Motel aren't you?" She sighed, "Well not anymore. You can't live in a Motel forever. And considering your parents are... Well... Not here. I'm all you have." She scratched her head, not able to believe what she was about to say, "Go home. Get some sleep. And when I get off I'm coming to get you and you're going to come live with me."

Just as Harley was turning him around and pushing him towards the exit, she heard the TV alert noise on the shitty old TV that hung off the wall near the registers. Her hands were still grasping at the back of his shirt, so she tugged him with her. She watched in disbelieve at the announcement, glancing back and forth from the TV to her book. This isn't serious is it? When it ended, she was speechless and just looked over at Derek. It wasn't a minute later that her boss showed up looking absolutely terrified, "Go home... I'm closing the store and... Well I don't know but I don't want to be here." She didn't know if she really believed the news broadcast but she wasn't going to leave it to chance. She reached out to gently grab her bosses forearm, "Be careful... Get somewhere safe." He nodded his head towards her, "You too Harley."

Harley didn't hesitate to hurry around the counter and grab her purse, shoving her book in it before walking back over to Derek. "You're coming with me." She grabbed him by his hand and lead him out of the store. She couldn't risk assuming he was following her so she just pulled him behind her. She hurried them down the street until she reached the door that lead to the small staircase up to her apartment. She threw open the door, and pushed Derek onto the couch. She was having a hard time wrapping her mind around any of this but better safe than sorry. She quickly made her way to the kitchen, grabbing a glass and filling it with a variety of mystery ingredients. She returned to Derek, holding the glass out to him. "We need to get you sober. So drink up." She headed towards her room, but turned back towards him as she was halfway down the hall, "Just don't ask what's in it."

She couldn't believe what was being said. The dead are coming to life!? no.. this has to be a prank some how. Clearly it had to be her dad, because he enjoyed a good prank from time to time, especially when he had them really planned out.

"This can't be happening, right? call someone you know, Chad, see if it's on their TV too."

He did just that, and it was on their TV. So this was the real deal, and not a joke. The Government wouldn't pull something like this, because it would cause panic for no reason. But there was definitely going to be people worrying about their families now, and how they were going to get somewhere safe. This was like they were stuck in some nightmare that they couldn't get out of, except this was no dream, this was reality.

"This can't be happening.. my family aren't even in town. They're in New York. It mentioned New York, right?" Raven didn't even have to answer, because Chad knew it already, he was just trying to avoid the truth, and hoping that he was wrong, that he had heard the news wrong. He threw his hands up into his hair in panic. "My Nan's gone to Bingo tonight.. I gotta warn dad. We gotta go get her. She won't survive a day." Sarah was panicking now too as she rushed down to her father with Chad. They told her father everything, and he thought it was a prank too until he turned on the TV to find that every station had the same alert. "Pack food, water, and everything else you can carry in a rucksack or something, anything that might help us. We gotta head to the mountains. Make sure you pack warm clothes, a tent, and anything else that will help us survive."It would make sense that her dad would know what to do, he used to be in the Army. They took weapons, ammo, and other essentials for their trip. They had no idea how long they were going to be gone for, and luckily they had no pets to lumber round with them in a time like this.

"Why can't we just come back here? there's an attic we can stay in."
"We don't truly know how many of them things are out there, and with not being far from the main city? I'm pretty sure the Government will order a nuke attack as a last resort. We're not sure if that blast will be out of range here. We can't risk it."
"But, dad, this was mom's home too. We can't just abandon it.. she--"
I KNOW, SARAH! he yelled. He didn't want to, but the subject about his wife was too delicate for him still. I know.. but she would want you, and I, to be safe." he was right, the house wasn't more important than their lives. She got her stuff, and followed her dad out to the car to get it loaded, then turned to Chad. "You coming with us?" She hoped he would, but he had to get to his own family. "No, I got to get in touch with mom and dad. Go with your dad.. I'll be okay." Sarah hugged him tightly to her as a good bye, and then pulled back from him gently. "Take care of yourself." "You too." he smiled a little before heading off in the opposite direction, and She got into her fathers hummer before they headed to where her Grandmother was going to be for the night with her friends.

Derek would've tried to retaliate going anyone else, but never Harley. Especially considering his ear was still soar from her dragging him to her room. He sat on her bed and kept quiet the whole time. He drank what she told him to drink and watched TV with her. It made him think back to the days when he was younger and she was just his babysitter. Now she's taken it upon herself to act like his slightly abusive older sister. Derek could never fight back with her. He never admitted this but he actually saw some of his mom in her and that's why he couldn't bring himself to ever fight back.

Though it was never beneath him to steal from her...

Derek waited forever for the perfect moment. He waited until she finally got up and went to the bathroom and Derek moved quickly. He grabbed her stash of money knowing exactly where it was and dashed out the room before she even had the chance to turn on the sink. He had a world of pain coming for him but she'd understand. There was no way for him to stop this.

He walked outside and the place looked like total chaos. Derek didn't really understand what was going on but he still grabbed his keys and drove to his suppliers place only to find it empty. Empty of cash at least. There was still a decent amount of drugs remaining and Derek used the opportunity to grab as much as he could along with booze before high tailing it out of there back to his motel room.

He locked himself in his room and opened up a bag of white powder. This one was one for consumption instead of snorting it like usual. He down the drugs and nearly finished a bottle of jack when he turned on the tv to see the news. Something was going on but Derek was too stoned to fully understand.
