Cassie trudged out of the school wearily. Molly had been freaking out about her comment as she had left and she soon realized her guess wasn't wrong. Sighing she passed the park looking at some kids playing in the jungle gym and she felt hunger come over her.
"No." she said sternly and broke into a run trying to get away from the world. As she ran soon it occurred to her that the school probably still had clubs going on and she sighed. "Oh well. no point now." Seeing no point in going anywhere else she headed home and threw her bag on the floor of her's and her brothers apartment.
"What are you doing home so early?" he demanded and she shrugged.
"Zombie outbreak at school. No reason to stay there. Besides i wanted to take a shower." she said and left without hearing his response. His heart still pumping in her ears she turned the water on scalding hot and jumped in, unsurprised that it had no effect. With terror eluding her she refrained from crying out in anger and disbelief as she sat on the floor of the shower and tried to scrub away the smell wondering how she would face Molly tomorrow with their secret hanging over them.

"A pass? Like a school pass? There is no such thing at this school. But I'd be happy if you'd come along." Kokoro said and smiled. Then Molly asked if there would be a decontamination or a disease sweep after the police arrived. "I am not sure but I dont think so. They will probably put the person under quarantine and they already did a checkup on the people after the outbreak. Somehow they didnt find any bite on me though." Kokoro continued. "Well would you follow me to the gym? I got activities to do. Do you have gymnastics clothing such as a leotard? Best something that is tight but flexible and doesnt flap around your legs."

"Sure." Molly shook her head. "No, I wasn't planning on being in gymnastics. I'll just watch, if that's okay." Molly was visibly disturbed as a student brushed past her on the way to his own activity and she felt the hunger pull on her mind. Her hand involuntarily reached out for him and almost grabbed him, but then she realized what she was doing and closed her hand into a fist, lowering it to her side. What is happening to me? she thought. What have I been turned into? Then she followed Ms. Suginami down the hall to her gymnastics, reflecting on her situation. She couldn't go back to the States, not now. She groaned inwardly, wishing that she were someone else.

Kokoro led the way to the gym where she changed to a black leotard and a black ribbon choker. She then headed to the gym where one of the other members was waiting. The girl had brown hair and wore a blue long sleeved leotard. She looked awfully pale. "Ms. Suginami. I think there is something wrong we me." The girl said. "I... the janitor is in the equipment room." "Its okay Kaede. We think we have the same thing as you." Kokoro said and headed to the equipment room. There the janitor sat on the floor bleeding: "Is that zombie girl gone?" He said. Then Kokoro said: "Bingo. But I think you know too much." Suddenly instinct took over and Kokoros personality turned dark and villainous. When she opened her mouth her teeth seemed sharp and before the janitor could scream, Kokoro somehow tore his head off, sipping from the blood, making sure not to dirty herself. She then tore a piece of flesh off of his body and snacked on it. "I found someone to eat! He is delicious!" Kokoro called to Molly. Suddenly Kokoro got a hold of herself again. "What has happened to me? I just killed someone." It was somehow a shock for her but somehow it didnt feel that bad.

Molly looked at the girl with concern. Another poor soul like her. Molly put her hand on her shoulder, trying to be comforting. "It's okay. We'll get through this together. My name is-" she stopped as she heard Ms. Suginami's voice from the equipment room. "Um, I'll b-be right ba-back." She said to the girl. "S-s-stay here." She ran to the equipment room to see Ms. Suginami standing over a headless janitor. She had some blood around her mouth, and there was blood everywhere. Molly's hand flew up to her mouth to hold in a scream. "What did you do?!? Oh, my God..." But then the hunger called to her. She covered her ears and then dragged her hands to cover her eyes. "No, oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh. This can't be happening to me." She knelt down in front of the dead body of the hapless janitor. "I'm so sorry..." She said. She didn't know who she was saying it to. Herself, the janitor, Kokoro, her parents, the world. Take your pick. Hesitantly, she reached out and grabbed his arm. Slowly, she brought it to her mouth and closed her eyes. Then she bit into the arm. It tasted amazing. It satisfied something deep within her that she had been neglecting. It felt so good. She continued to munch on the arm, forgetting what it was. After a while she opened her eyes and looked at Ms. Suginami. "We have to clean this up. Nobody can find this." Then she looked down at her white shirt. "Oh, damn..." she swore. Blood was all over her shirt. She started to panic. "What do we do??"

"Well I guess we either leave him to rot or bury him in the woods behind the gym. And about your shirt: I can lend you one of mine. Just remember to return it to me." Kokoro said. Then suddenly a male voice behind them said: "Whats going on here?" It was a policeman, but he noticed the scene. He looked for his pistol but luckily for Kokoro and Molly the policeman had forgotten his pistol. So he took out his club and attacked Kokoro who caught it and tore it out of the mans hand. "Sorry. But we arent your enemies." Kokoro said. He looked confused now since he thought zombies to normally be braindead puppets or so. But in his short hesitation, Kokoro bit him. "Just to make sure you dont tell your buddies. I dont think you will turn into a brainless zombie since I have bitten you but rather an intelligent one. You know if you tell anyone who isnt a zombie, then they might kill you or quarantine you where you will be an experiment. You dont want that to happen do you?" Kokoro said. The policeman collapsed both in pain and in fear: "I... I dont want to die. Please. I promise I wont tell anyone." "You shouldnt have judged us and attacked us. Visit me when you have turned into a zombie. You know I only live down the street from you. I will supply you with a daily ration of meat to suppress the hunger. Got me. Kokoro continued. The policeman nodded. Kokoro left the room and came back with a plastic bag and bandages. She aided the policeman and started to tear the meat off of the janitor, putting it into the plastic bag. She probably stuffed everything of the janitor into the large plastic bag except for his bones and most of his head excluding the brain. "There we have less to bury and have probably a weeks worth of meat." She said. Kokoro then washed the specks of blood off of the policemans shirt and said: "There. No one should notice. Act normal and avoid tripping and no one would suspect you of being infected." The policeman straightened his shirt and nodded. He then left. Kokoro still felt some fear from him when he left.

Molly watched as Ms. Suginami dealt with the policeman. It was so reassuring to have someone with her who just knew what to do.

Then she let out the breath she had been holding. "I want your instinct," she said wistfully, " You just always know what to do." But then she realized what had just happened. "But how could you do that?!? You just condemned that man to the same torturous life we have! I could never do that to someone." She said that now, but inside she knew that she would. "You know what I'm most afraid of?" She asked rhetorically, "I'm afraid that I will forget what I used to be." She shook her head sadly. "We can't let ourselves do that. We have to remember that we are human." She pounded her fist into her palm after each sentence, as if the act were a punctuation mark. "Human heart. Human mind. It reminds me of something my mother used to say to me. It's from the Bible: 'For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.'" Molly took a moment to reflect. "I think it applies to us now more than ever. We can't forget it." Then she sighed. "Okay, give me the shirt. It wouldn't do us any good to get caught now."

Kokoro sighed and said: "By means of religion I'd be a yokai and not a human anymore. And yokai should know better than humans without threatening their existence." Kokoro then grabbed the shirt she talked about before. It was a white button up dress shirt. "Here you have the shirt. By the way, its the fault of the man for attacking me and it was to avoid us being killed or worse. Our life will be torturous until we contact that scientist who was working on an alternative food source for zombie and towards making them civilized. He will help us. If he doesnt cooperate then I will do my best to make him do so. And you would do something like I did if you didnt want to die." Kokoro gathered the rest of the janitor and headed outside making sure she wouldnt be seen. Luckily she found a pit to throw the body in. Then she gathered dirt and leaves to cover it up.

Within 15 minutes she was back. The other girl had cleaned up the blood. "Shall we start?" Kokoro said after washing her hands. It was like Kokoro had a different personality. It seemed almost as if she looked down on humans now. Kokoro turned on music and she and the girl started to make graceful movements. Sometime Kokoro slipped and landing on the ground, her head fell off. The one girl held her hand in front of her mouth avoiding to scream. Kokoros body got up and picked up the head. She then somehow reattached it and said: "I dont think this has happened to you to yet. I mean with the head being lopped off. It obviously works with our limbs too. They can come off and be reconnected easily and they will still move when severed. I found out this morning when I fell out of bed and my arm came off. It is even painless."

Ms. Suginami started speaking kind of defensively. "Thanks." the girl said, taking the shirt. Once the teacher had left, Molly took her stained oxford off and put on the new, clean one. Then she washed her hands and face. Then Ms. Suginami came back.

When her head fell off, Molly tried not to scream, then managed to say, "Yes, my foot came off this morning when I was trying to put my shoes on." She held up her foot to show Ms. Suginami the seam-looking line on her ankle. It was extremely faint, but it was there. "I didn't know your - our heads could come off, though."

"Well maybe we should wrap this up. If anyone needs rations of meat, then come over to my place. We have now plenty to eat." Kokoro said. Suddenly the ground started to shake. It was an earthquake. After a minute it stopped. "Whoa, that was a strong one." Kokoro said. She then went to her back and took out her blackberry. She then searched for news. "Well, now we can be sure that if anyone calls for help that they will be delayed by at least four days. There is breaking news in of an earthquake at 6.9 magnitude and that the streets towards the next cities are seriously damaged. Anyone want to come over to my place? If you feel unsafe where you are living, then I still have some room."

(Sorry I'm late.)

Molly fell against a table as the ground shook violently. There were crashing sounds as things in other rooms fell to the ground. She was terrified, but at the same time she was amazed and oddly pleased. This earthquake was just like what it felt like when her mind attacked her. And now everyone was feeling that way. Not just Molly in her own head, but everyone in the room. Serves them right. she thought maliciously. Finally they all know! They have to feel it now whether they like it or not. Eat it, ignorant jerks! EAT IT! This is what it's like! YEESSSS! her thoughts were confused and jumbled, but they somehow satisfied her. She didn't actually hate people who didn't have her mental condition, but sometimes she felt like she did. She hid under the table and waited for it to end. She was kind of disappointed when it did. She emerged from under the table shaken, but smiling.

"6.9??" she said when she heard the news. "I might want to take you up on that offer. I should check on my host family, though." Then she ran out the door. She stepped over overturned tables and lamps and such, and finally emerged into the sunlight outside. She took a deep breath. Then she ran all the way to her host family's house. She found Hira standing next to the rubble of her house. "Oh, my gosh, what happened?" Molly asked as she sprinted up to Hira's side, a little out of breath. Hira was trying not to cry.

"The earthquake..." she said, her voice choked. "I got here as fast as I could, but my house is..." she gestured at the wreckage, a tear sliding down her face.

"Hey. It'll be okay. I'll call the paramedics-" but then she stopped. They would be delayed by four days. "Nevermind. Let's try to find your parents."

"My father is at work."

"Let's find your mother, then." Molly ran into the rubble, looking manically for the woman. An hour of searching yielded horrible results. Molly found her crushed under piece of the ceiling, with dust all over her. Her blood was everywhere. "No..." Molly breathed. She couldn't believe it. This was awful. She reached up to cover her face with her hands, but she couldn't stop staring at the dead woman. "Hira," she called weakly, "I found her..."

Hira ran frantically over, and then collapsed in tears. She bent over the body, crying out in Japanese occasionally.

Molly looked around desperately. "What do we do?" There was no one to help them. No one they could call, no one they could contact at all. "HELP!" Molly screamed. "Somebody!!" But there was no answer. There were some similar wails from other houses, but nothing else. Molly eventually just knelt down and cried with Hira. There was nothing she could do. the same powerless rage she had felt that morning filled her again. The situation was too much, and soon her vision blurred. Black crept out along the edge of her vision, and then she passed out.

Molly had left and Kokoro took the other girl home. Kokoros house was still in one piece. Only a couple shingles had fallen off. Once inside, Kokoro said: "Go ahead and clean yourself. If you need clothes, I have some that should fit you." Kokoro then went to get changed. On her way to her room, she noticed a note on the wall. "Princess. I left this morning to go live with your aunt. Please dont follow me." It read. Kokoro was satisfied. She had one problem less to worry about but somehow was worried about him because of the earthquake.

Kokoro then went into her room and put a fresh set of clothes on. She put a pair of black pants on and a grey halter top. Two suspenders from the pants hung on her shoulders. She then headed out noticing a couple houses had suffered from severe damage. At one house that had collapsed, she noticed Molly. Suddenly Molly collapsed. Kokoro hurried out of her house and rushed to Molly. "Molly! Wake up!" Kokoro said as she tapped her cheek.

Molly felt like she was falling. There was black all around, and the edges of her vision were blurry. That let her realize that it was a dream. The figures that would torment her through voices during the day now took shape and floated around her, screaming. Then they started to rot. They became skeletons and corpses and horrific creatures Molly didn't know of. They kept screaming. One said urgently,"Molly! Wake up!" Then the others took up the chant in a mocking tone. "Molly! Molly! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Molly!" Then they burst out in gales of wicked laughter.

"No..." Molly murmured, still unconcious, "I wish I could, but it's not fun anymore... I don't want to wake up and see them. It's too hard..."

Hira turned and looked at Kokoro. "Molly!" She exclaimed and ran over to the two. When Molly didn't respond to the teachers calls, Hira looked up into the teacher's face, tears staining Hira's face. "You have to help. My mother..." The younger girl glanced back at the dead body. "She was killed... And now Molly's gone, and you have to help me."

"Molly! Wake up! Its just a bad dream!" Kokoro began to yell honestly worried about Molly. Molly seemed to have drifted into the dreamworld not able or not willing to come out for some reason. "Do you know why Molly fainted and why she is like this?" Kokoro asked Hira. "Is it because your house collapsed? Did Molly see anything horrible like a close person dead or so?" Kokoro looked for the cause so she could maybe find a way to wake Molly up. Kokoro didnt really know what to do. She could pinch Molly because if they didnt feel pain when their limbs came of then they might not feel pinches either. It was worth a try though and Kokoro pinched Mollys arm.

Hira shook her head, swallowing. "She does this sometimes when she's really stressed. I don't understand it and she refuses to talk about it. She seems to get lost in her own mind, which she claims 'tortures her.' Just get her to your house. I need to find my father." Hira turned away, pulling out her cellphone and dialing a number. She put the phone hesitantly to her ear as she trudged slowly back to her mother's corpse.

Kokoro picked up Molly and took her to her house. Once there, Kokoro laid Molly on the couch and hoped she would wake up soon. She must have seen something really horrible. There was a knock at the door. It was the policeman from earlier and he was beginning to look pale. "Do you not have family?" Kokoro asked. Then the policeman answered: "No. I am only 22 and havent found someone to be with me for the rest of my life. I am afraid my house is about to collapse. Do you have room for one more?" "Yes. I do. My father moved out this morning to live with his sister." Kokoro said. The policeman then replied: "That poor many had alcoholism problems and was reported a couple times for domestic violence. Then it suddenly stopped and he started coming in with black eyes claiming you beat him. But that man wasnt credible." "I actually did hit him twice. Once defending my mother years ago and the second time was when he stole some of my money just to get drunk. If he hadnt turned out that way. If he had played by the rules and had been a good father then I wouldnt have needed to slap some sense into him. Now he's gone." Kokoro said. A drop of sweat pearled down the policemans head and he said: "Please dont get mad when I say this, but thats messed up." Kokoro grabbed a cigarette and lit it: "I know." She tossed the policeman the pack of cigarettes and said: "You can have one if you want. I like you. Just ask if you need one, then I wont say no. I just hate it when someone doesnt ask." The policeman then took out a cigarette and lit it.

Molly awoke to the smell of nicotine. She was in an unfamiliar house. She thought back a while. Then she remembered. The janitor, the policeman, the earthquake. Hira's house... The policeman! His voice was at the door. So was Kokoro's. She must be in Kokoro's house. If so, what was the policeman doing here? He didn't sound like he was arresting anyone. In fact, he sounded friendly and kind of scared. Molly swung her feet over the side of the couch and looked around. It was a nice house, kind of. She stood up and wobbled to the door. She was a little unsure on her feet still. "Hey, Ms. Suginami." she said weakly.

Kokoro heard Molly's weak voice behind her say: "Hey, Ms. Suginami." "Molly, I was worried about you. You suddenly fainted while I stared out the window towards that collapsed house. Are you alright?" Kokoro said. Kokoro then lit another cigarette and sat back down. "Okay, we need a plan. First we need to find a way to contact this researcher who was working on an alternative food source for zombies. He sure can help us. We also need to make sure no one finds us out. If someone finds out and attacks you, make sure you kill the person. We dont want witnesses and biting them will just make more zombies, probably leading to a food shortage."

Molly nodded. "Yes, I'm fine. It was nothing." She sat down in a chair next to Kokoro, giving the policeman a wary glance. "Okay, we could Google him, maybe his phone number is listed." she suggested. "I mean, it's not the most elegant plan or the best, but it might work. Do you have a computer?" she asked, beginning to stand up. Then she paused, sinking back down into the chair. "Wait. Do we even know his name? Or whether his research is actually valid or not? What countries have been affected? Which country does he live in? Is the internet up? The phone lines?" The flood of questions came naturally to Molly, as she was an inquisitive person. But then she realized that she was being kind of rude. "Sorry. I guess there's a lot we don't know, huh?"
