DAMES BLANCHES are female spirits or supernatural beings, comparable to the White Women of both Germanic and Dutch mythology. The Dames Blanches were reported in the region of Lorraine (Lotharingen) and Normandy. In recent years, however, their appearances have expanded beyond French borders.

Dames Blanches are beings dressed in white, said to forebode a death. Regardless of her appearance, she is almost always young and very beautiful. The first instance of this apparition occurred in the sixteenth century, and the name given to Stéphanie Félicité, comtesse de Genlis. In general, Dames Blanches are filled with regrets and negative emotions of past loves and failures. They have turbulent personalities, growing increasingly more violent the more their demands are not met. Dames Blanches are difficult to placate and reason with, and often put forth challenging requests to whomever they meet.

A strange breed of Dames Blanche has been said to walk railways and chase after automobiles, perhaps in the pursuit of an estranged lover. As a poltergeist, she is often tied to the road she died on, or the vehicle that caused her end. Some have been said to have blood on her face. Other Saniwa have said that cars with her ‘soul’ attached to them will crash and kill everybody and everything inside them.

Human folklore scholars interpret the Dames Blanches as a derivation of pre-Christian female goddesses, and suggested their name Dame may have derived from the ancient guardian goddesses known as the Matres, by looking at old inscriptions to guardian goddesses, specifically inscriptions to "the Dominæ,” who watched over the home, perhaps became the Dames of mediæval folklore.

“You've got red on you.”

REVENANTS are corporeal beings raised from the dead. Their sole purpose is to fulfill unresolved, murderous intent. Therefore, they are sometimes called “revengers” by their Saniwa sponsors. They spawn from highly spiritual exorcists whom repurpose the soul of a deceased person who never acted upon their ill will. If the soul chosen by the Spiritualist lacks killing intent, the ritual required to birth a Revenant will fail.

Given the dangerous nature of this ceremony, the House forbids this practice and punishes anyone found attempting the Revenant Ritual.

All Revenants have red, sullen eyes and pale skin. Though their other traits vary based on their past, physical body, Revenants carry the same scent: rotting flesh. Unlike the Undead or Draugr, they lack the physical appearance of decay so they appear innocuous to Saniwa until they attack. They are capable of intelligent reasoning, and can effectively strategize against their prey. Combat with Revenants requires extreme physical and psychological toil. Aside from keeping up with their strength, speed, and stamina, they have the unique ability to move through darkness. As part of the Noctis genus, they remain passive during the day, but attack their prey at night, when they have the most mobility. Above all, Revenants will not stop until their target has died. This persistence lasts even after its death as their scratches cause major spiritual corruption. Note however, that a Revenant does not die through conventional means. They only die from the removal of the head and heart.

Greek and Egyptian ancients interpret the Revenants as the servants of vengeful sorcerers. There are historical accounts of Saniwa creating Revenant armies, the most notable being Vlad the Impaler. Paranormalogist Ruding Calmet states how some instances of Revenants mentioned in the twelfth century in England and Denmark stem from the vampire folklore of Poland, Hungary, and Moravia.

In the Saniwa underworld, exorcists may hold competitions where they create Revenants to duel one another and gamble on the results. Though illegal, it remains a highly profitable mode of entertainment.
