so, jared had a major crush on shailene back in the day but it was unfortunate that matthew got to her before he had the chance to. it seemed like their close friendship would've been ruined if they had gotten together though but still, jared wished that he would've spoken up and pursued her though. she might be a bit put off by his newfound attitude though. he will try his best not to be too mean to her now but there are no guaranteed promises.

shay and harry were able to be friends in high school thanks to matthew. but harry always liked shay a lot more than him, and they've still kept that connection. harry has a feeling that her and matthew's relationship wasn't as shiny as it appeared, but doesn't want to press her too much on it, and is instead trying to lead by example by being open about his parents with her.

They had more of a brother/sister type relationship. He was the only one she thought about telling she was leaving town, but she decided not to do it because she didn't want anyone else finding out about it or having him talk her into staying.

Upon their reunion, Sutton is more welcoming of Shailene now that they all grew up, but she is still a bit wary of why she has been being as kind to her as she has been.

Even though the only contact they had with each other over the past few years was through phone calls or messages on facebook/text messages.

There's a lot of things Matthew got in the way of Shailene having, but the one thing she's grateful - besides knowing how strong she's always been - is the very real friend she had been able to find in Harry. It sucked that back then his parents didn't approve of them having much to do with one another until Matthew was involved, and there were times Matt side-eyed her about this relationship with another guy, but in the only way they could have given their situations - they'd found friendship where they shouldn't have. And now that they're older - now that they're no longer repressed and oppressed and everything else in between - Shailene honestly is elated about the easy way they're able to slip into old and new habits, and is super proud of how free Harry seems to be now. It's refreshing.

Now that she's older and far more mature, Shailene knows for a fact that she doesn't fear Rin. She can possibly say now that she had not feared her back then, that it had been more-so intimidation - rightful intimidation because Rin...well, Rin is Rin and always has been. It didn't help that, once Matthew brought her into the fold, it always felt like Shailene didn't know how to navigate the social scene, didn't know how not to be herself for a time. Now, though, even if Rin did ever sneer down her nose at Shailene back then, it wouldn't matter to her now because no one's opinion of her matters as much as her own. That's the kind of growth Shay has had. Would Rin probably still intimidate Shailene now? Damn straight...just not as much after a few drinks.

She never said anything - and therein lies her problem - but before Matthew had ever come along, Shailene had always had a crush on Jared. But between her own shyness and fear of ruining their friendship - and Matthew's confident pursuit - Shailene had told herself it had been for the best...until Matthew's abuse started and it felt like whatever relationship she did have with Jared had been compromised. They were still friends, that was for sure, but the two boys never got along, and Shailene always felt like she was letting Jared down by not sticking up for anymore - not leaving when she knew very well she should have. It just always felt like she couldn't. Then Jared left and it hurt, a lot more than what she was prepared for, which is why she's so excited to see him. Granted, it's all because of a funeral, but still. She wants to know why he left, wants to explain why she hadn't back then even after he told her to, and she also wants to figure out why there's still an eager swoop in her stomach she thought she left in high school at the mention of his name.

Shailene had never seen any real reason why Matthew and his friends ever messed with Sutton other than the fact that they could and more than likely would get away with it. She had never agreed with the bullying or brutality they displayed, but the few times she had said something did not end well for herself behind closed doors, so it didn't happen often. And it stuck with her constantly. It probably throws Sutton now, this sudden display of keen kindness and and open extension of friendship. Shailene doesn't think she'll be necessarily redeemed by the new woman she's becoming, but she does want to prove that she was always better than her silence might have let people believe. Besides, she always could have made friends back then and now she's more inclined to do so without hesitation.

Nas and Shailene were never really amazing friends or anything, and they definitely didn't keep in contact when everyone went their separate ways. However, Shailene looks back on him and currently towards him with a fondness immersed in gratitude. Matthew and Nas had never gotten along back then, but during a particularly bad situation in one of the high school's back hallways when Matthew had Shailene pinned to the wall, fingers digging into her jaw as he forced her to look him in the face in amidst his vitriol, Nas had literally come out of nowhere and body-slammed him. If Shailene could have laughed in the face of Matthew's limping afterwards when Nas told him to go away, and not feared a later response, she would have. All she did was sob and all Nas did was watch her every now and then, even when he knew she was looking. He swore he'd call the cops, the last thing she wanted, but never did. And Shailene has never forgotten that.

Jackson's another case of Shailene wanting to be better for now that they're in the same space. She doesn't expect them to be the best of friends, but they always could have been better. She could've stuck up for him more when Douchebag McDouchebaggery kept antagonizing him, when Matthew and the others would laugh about it even as she winced and wanted them all to just grow up. Shailene remembers never being cruel, but she also never interacted with or defended him, and that's stayed with her. She hates her own inaction - her own weakness - and hopes to actually foster a relationship she can be proud of when they part ways.
