Below is some information about the mermaids in the rp, althout truthfully your character will be ignorent of most of these facts, most of their knowledge would be about the legends that mermaids are part of, so I'd like you to keep that in mind. But I did think it would be nice to clearify what all they are capable of so that no one is left in the dark.

Anatomy

Image As you may well know, mermaids are part fish and part woman, the tail of a fish and torso an up a woman. But to clarify, the mermaids in the rp (from here on out referred to as simply mermaids) are part woman and part osteichthyes (bony fish). They are never part shark or dolphin, never part bird or whale, but the varying species of bony fish are numerous, and so the sort of tail they have can vary largely depending on where they dwell. The sort of mermaids that hunt for the tribe have lunate caudal fin (other caudal fins vary according to natural order, and fallow the same rules). This means that the mermaids who hunt for men or other fish have tails with the main fin in the shape of a crescent. This is the optimal sort of fin found in the bony fish kingdom, used for speed and long distances. Eel like tails on a mermaid signify a swimming method which involves rapid undulation. The way an eel swims is the writhe, this is called undulation, and primarily mermaids and eels with this sort of structure are found in rivers and towards the bottom of the ocean, making them benthic creatures. Mermaids with an artistic tail that would look something like a male beta’s fins are not the fastest swimmers in the sea at all, and are also benthic in nature; however they do tend to be the most agile, much like their eel counterparts.

Mermaids also have webbing in between their fingers, which disappears once they breach water. In fact, if a mermaid is entirely breached from the water for about 30 seconds, she will begin to transform into a regular human female. It is a defense mechanism should they become beached and unable to return to water, so that they do not dry out. Underwater and out of it, a mermaid tends to act and look differently. For instance they have no need to blink under water, instead their eye’s lens is extra thick, and glassy looking. Their skin changes also, with scales lining up their arms and a trail up their back to their neck, ears may become pointed and teeth sharpen considerably. This is a drastic change from when they breach water, in which their upper half appears entirely human. Unless changed fully into a woman, mermaids have no mammary glands (no nipples).

Hunting Methods

Image Mermaids love man flesh, and they take the opportunity to eat it whenever they can, if not the simply feast of the other fish around them. This is not uncommon behavior when taking into consideration the other fish of the sea, 97% of the creatures in the ocean are predators, and literally the general rule is, big fish eat smaller fish.

First order of business when hunting for men, lookouts and squads patrol territory and pinpoint where a passing ship may be. Once found, two mermaids trail the ship from below, while the rest go gather a hunting team. Then comes the bait, they use one of the beautifully finned bottom dwellers to grab the attention of the ship. Once she signals the team with song, they swim up from below and begin to sing with her. As the song ends, they attack, pulling men over board and ripping holes into the hull of the ship. Should they encounter trouble, back-up squads are at the ready below to swarm and aid their sisters in need. A full sized frigate can attract numerous mermaids, and they use numbers to their advantage, sometimes skipping the process of lurring and going straight for the hull of the ship, sinking it and taking the men down with the ship. Mermaids are quite strong, strong enough to punch through wood on a raft, though this is their only physical weapon, as they do not generally carry weapons unless they so happen to be higher up in the tribe hierarchy.

Mermaid Culture

ImageWhen not eating men, Mermaids are extremely playful and affectionate towards one another. They decorate each other with shells and seaweed, and play pranks on the other animals. A strong sisterly bond exists between all of them, and even if two meet and do not know each other, it is accepted that each party is fully capable of trusting one another to the death. Mermaids split off and join together in tribes, ruled usually by a mermaid who is motherly and leader-inclined. Rarely is there comflict with who leads the tribe, and just like the bond between each other, it is a matter that is simply accepted. Tribes can number anywhere from ten to a thousand mermaids( the number of them in the whole world is no more than thousand at one time) , however rarely is the concentration so high, instead they travel across the oceans whimsically, staying seperated to better their chances at a meal. Often times when a good hunting ground is located, a tribe will stay in one place, especially since each tribe has at least one bait mermaid, and their tails do not allow them to swim as fast or far as the others.

Mermaids can actually commune with other mammals of the sea who use echo location to commune in their species. Just as a dolphin or whale may sing, the mermaids are able to sing back through pitches of their own. This is used to exchange information on where schools of fish are located out in the open ocean.

The way a Mermaid comes to be is simple, and a mermaid is never born, but made. First a small girl must be taken, this is done near a dock or perhaps if a rare girl child appears on a ship. The girl child is then drowned, and then revived underwater by one of the aleady existing mermaids. A mermaids life span is that of a normal humans, with the exception that they do not age physically after transforming into a mermaid and then growing to their body's full prime.

Mermaids do not take names, casting them away when they become of the sea.
