Dragons in LORE

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby TheUnnamedOne on Tue Jan 08, 2013 7:29 am

Dragons, as you know, have many myths and legends surrounding them. They are known to be feircesome and emotionless, as well as scaly, fire-breathing monstrosities that will rip you in half if they see you. They have a huge reputation for destroying villages, kidnapping fair maidens and hoarding treasure. But in LORE most of those rumours are simply that. Rumours.

Lets start with the basics. Dragons, obviously, come in many shapes, sizes and colours. They can be as tiny as a seahorse, or as large as a small village. They can have four legs, or six, or none. Each and every Dragon is unique. A very little known fact about Dragons is that they have the ablity to change into a human form if their desire to is great enough. For how long depends on the strength of their desire. While changed they lose most of their strengths and invulnerabilities, yet they are known to be more beautiful than any human in the world.

Dragons have been hunted for many reasons and more often than not the particular reason will be proved false. For example, Dragonhide is famously known to be the strongest, ligthest and most durable material for armour than any other. This is false as the hide of a Dragon is turned to a material not unlike snakeskin when removed from the body. It is said that the tongue, eyes and saliva of a Dragon can possess healing properties, though this is also false. A few things that are true is one about Dragons blood, used in potions to increase magical abilities. Dragons are very magical creatures and so their blood will actually increase your magic, but the effects are not permanent. The claws and teeth can also be used to forge weapons as they are incredibly strong and when fashioned right, deadly sharp. It takes a master smith to create a weapon using Dragon claws and/or teeth. Lastly the heart is rumoured to grant immortality to any mortal who consumes it. This is, sadly, true but comes at the risk of going insane. Plus...eating the heart of a Dragon is kind of gross.

Commonly Mistaken Facts about Dragons
  • Not all Dragons can breathe fire, and not all can fly.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Dragons CAN feel emotions. Quite strongly actually, as any emotion felt by a mortal is increased by at least three times by a Dragonkin.
  • Dragons have no interest in maidens or treasure.
  • That said, Dragons have very little to no interest in any other species at all.
  • It is possible for a creature, or another Dragonkin, to form a bond with a Dragon/kin. This bond is unbreakable and enables the two creatures to speak telepathically as well as find the other no matter where they may go. This bond means that should one die, the other dies as well.
  • Dragons can speak the common tongue telepathically, however unless the specific Dragon has perfect control over the volume, the voice causes pain to those who hear it, NO EXCEPTIONS
  • Going off of that, Dragons converse between each other using Dragon Tongue

Hierarchy in Dragon (working from bottom to top)
  • Beings who have consumed Dragon blood enough that they begin to show Dragon characteristics, or have consumed the heart of a Dragon.
  • Daclings - A crossbreed of Dragons and Wyverns
  • Vartii - A Dracling that has killed a Dragon and consumed its heart. Very unstable creature and very violent.
  • Wyverns and Drakes
  • Half-Dragon, Half-Human
  • Dragons
  • High Dragons
  • Elder Dragons - very strong, Very old, extremely well hidden.
  • Queen Dragon - Said to be the first Dragon, every so often it is rumoured that she is seen feeding on large quanities of creatures, however it is still unknown as to whether this holds any truth. Said to be the strongest, and impossible to kill. A creature of legend mostly.
  • Spectral Dragon - A Dragon cursed to by the Queen to walk the world as long as she was alive. He has made no secret of his existence and kills whole villages randomly.
A name is not your identity; a name is your title, your leash, your prison, your expectation. Without a name you can be as free as you want, as obscene as you want, as emotional as you want, anybody you want. A name, your name, is optional not mandatory. And it is because of this that I am The Unnamed One.

Before the Nephilim came, five dragons watched over the land of men to make sure the new race didn't delve the world into chaos.
Pyreenus, the oldest, gave them the gift of fire, giving them the heat of life.
Durandal, the toughest, gave the humans the gift of metal, giving them the ability to concur all other species.
Vesper, the youngest, gave the humans the gift of technology, allowing them to explore the world.
Frastor, the most knowledgeable, gave the humans the gift of literature so they could record the past, present and future.

However, one dragon, Coron, gave the human's a horrible curse. He gave the humans the gift of conflict, never allowing them to reach their full potential.

When the Nephilim came, the dragons decided it was finally time to die, mating with a human and passing on their power to it's offspring.

Pyreenus- fire- Areth

Durandal- earth- twins: one with plants, one with stone and metal.

Vesper- electricity- ?

Coron- Acid/poison- ?

Frastor- Ice- ?

There is another legend concerning Dragons that is not well known at all. Though this legend is more among Dragons and their kin. It is told that when a half-breed between a Human and a Dragon, consumes the heart of a Dragon they will gain the powers of that specific Dragon. Mortals would gain immortality, but Dragonkin are already immune to old age and so, if left healthy and strong, will live forever. (This, however is quite rare as Dragons do tend to fight and they get sick very easily. So an Elder Dragon is very rare and respected)

Naturally, the Dragons and High Dragons were concerned about this and so killed all the half-breeds who knew and/or had consumed at least one heart. They were worried that should only one half-breed eat the heart of a High Dragon, they would be stronger than all the others, and uncontrollable.

And so this legend was passed through the ages of Dragons with the insistance that it was simple a myth told to make little Dragons behave. No one thought to test it, after all if you were a half-breed, you already had a Dragon heart. Why would you need another one?

Dragons have been known to hunt Werewolves for their meat, as to a Dragon, werewolf meat is the most delicious and sweet of all their diet. The Were's also give off a pheromone which makes attracts the Dragons too them. They give this off even in their human form. Because of this young Dragons who have not yet learned control have been known to go wild with a feeding frenzy, hunting and feeding on packs of werewolves.

However, as everyone knows a werewolf is a diseased creature and they're flesh is inedible. It may taste good to a Dragon but it leaves them sick and dying. They have a few weeks before they die, those weeks are spent in agony with their internal organs slowly failing. It takes a difficult healing spell to heal these Dragons, and only a few Light High Dragons have been known to possess it. Among these few are:

~ Narathi, a gold High Dragon close to becoming an Elder who is widely known to all and respected by most of the Dragon society. She has been known to protect many humans from her kind as well as any threatening species.
~ Luthior, a pale yellow High Dragon who has stunned people with his capability to cast high leveled healing spells while he is still only freshly become a High Dragon.
~Penarem, Nearly white and close to becoming an Elder, not much is known about this High Dragon as he only really shows himself when there is a dire need for his healing spells. He is also the only known High Dragon capable of Bringing a Dragon's back from death if done in a certain amount of time.

________

Dragons and Witches haven't always been at each others throats. There was a time, very VERY long ago when they coexisted peacefully. Witches would become a Dragon rider, and the two creatures would become bonded to each other. As the two species were nearly even in magical power this was a good partnership.

But somewhere down the line a Dragon absorbed a Witch soul. It is unknown whether this was intentional or an accident but the outcome is still the same. The thing with Witches is that only other Witches are supposed to be able to absorb a Witch soul. When it was discovered that Dragons were able too the Witches grew frightened for their safety and began killing the Dragons, consuming their hearts in the process. It was then discovered that while Witches are mortal, they can consume a Dragons heart and gain immortality without going insane like other mortals.

Because of this Dragons and Witches have since been fighting and killing each other and Witches (rather than Dragon Slayers) are the Dragons biggest threat.

A group of Witches consumed High Dragon hearts and gained immortality as well as increased magical power. Using this new power they staged an attack on the Elder Dragons, planning on slaughtering them while they all slept. A select few High Dragons stopped their attack in time and killed most of them. Three got away and hid themselves over the land. One High Dragon was tasked with the job of hunting them down and killing them. His name was Screthin, a large black High Dragon skilled in Fire and Dark magic. He hunted two of the Witches easily but the third eluded him for over a hundred years.

He teamed up with an old purple Dragon skilled in Soul and Mind magic who was capable of turning into a human temporarily. Together they managed to track the Witch down and kill her, pulling her soul out and trapping it in a bottle and sealed with the magic from both Dragons. They decided that Screthin would keep the soul in his care. Before this happened they discovered that the Witch had a son somewhere who she had passed the majority of her power to. She gloated over the fact that her child was half Dragon. Worried about the potential for chaos the two set out searching for the boy.

Many years passed and the Purple Dragon eventually had a child to a Dragon Slayer, resulting in his death. Screthin found his old friends child after she killed her mother and waited in the shadows until the High Dragon Council sealed her Dragon side away. Then he trained her.

Before Screthins death it was speculated that he managed to find the Witches child and upon fighting him, was defeated. He fled from the fight dying and passed his powers and heart and possessions onto his student.
