Mechanics of the Multiverse

Terminology:
Metaverse: The actual truth, the real universe. Here, now, what many refer to as IRL, or "In Real Life."

Multiverse: "The Multiverse is the summation of the many multiverses (little m) that are created when two players interact (two universes overlap in some way, creating a single multiverse)." Remæus.

multiverse: An overlap of two universes formed when characters interact.

The first concept essential to understanding how the Multiverse works is the concept of a Metaverse. The Metaverse is our universe. The "Meta Universe." We sit in the Metaverse at our computers and phones to communicate with other people. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that your writing your character and sharing the written experience with others. Don't let Metaverse relationships, conflicts, or opinions compromise a good story. You can be best friends with someone in the Metaverse, and have your characters be mortal enemies.

As previously stated, Multiverse is the sum of a whole bunch of little multiverses. In turn, multiverses are created every time two characters interact, an overlap of each character's perspective universe. Anything that happens to things recognized in the multiverse created through that interaction happens in either character perspective universe.
The reverse is not neccessarily true. The relevance of any thing to the multiverse, the multiverse that is created through the interaction of the characters, must be mentioned by the author or recognized by the characters. For instance, both characters would interact with the same round tables of Gambit's, both players acknowledging that the tables of Gambit's bar are indeed round by writing it into the post for their participating character. This can also be done through player communication in the Metaverse.

Example:
Jack and Jill live in two seperate universes. In both universes, there is a Gambit's bar. However, this Gambit's bar is different in both universes.

The Gambit's bar in Jack's universe has round tables.
The Gambit's bar in Jill's universe has sqaure tables.

Lets say that Jack and Jill both go to Gambit's bar one day. Jack walks in sits at one of the tables. He is wearing summer clothing because the sun is shining out and he makes a note of this.
Jill comes in and shakes rain from her coat. It's been stormy but she doesn't have an umbrella so her hair is wet. She see's Jack and goes to his table and sits down mindful of the pointed edge of the table.

As you can see two very different things have happened here. In Jack's universe it is sunny and bright. In Jill's it is raining. Jill has made note of the table's sharp points, as in her universe it is a square.

Here's the fun part. There are no set rules on how this plays out!
What is important in interacting with other character inside the Multiverse isn't the specifics of how your universes are interacting but rather that your characters are interacting in the first place. Depending on the authors, this could go down one of several ways.

1) Events solidify in the multiverse the characters are sharing based on a first come first served basis. It is sunny outside and the table's in the bar are square.
This is probably the most amiable solution. It creates a good flow for the scene and keeps things consistent after they happen. Don't be fooled into thinking that Jack's tables have to be square now or that Jill isn't really wet! When Jill entered from her universe (where it was raining) into the multiverse that was being shared with Jack she would still carry that water with her. By the same token, when Jack is no longer inside of the multiverse with Jill the tables he sits at will be round again.

2) Things arrange themselves organically as the characters interact and authors come into an agreement. Jack may looks outside and suddenly realize it's now raining, or conversely Jill may be confused by the lack of rain.
This is improv, which in other words means both players are winging it. Perhaps things don't even settle down and they continue to shift as the characters interact with each other during the course of the scene. The order it takes place in and what is settled on don't really matter. The experience it creates is something of itself.

3) Both characters see outside Gambit's bar what is happening in their own universes. The table is round when Jack looks at it and square when Jill looks at it. Both things are true at the same time for each person separately.
This is not a very satisfying way to run the scene. Now there are two things going on in the same place at the same time. Doing this increases the number of things other participating players have to acknowledge or pay attention to, and in some cases disregards other players input to the multiverse. This might make for an interesting experience in some cases, but in most cases isn't worth the bother.

4) Everything happens at the same time in the same place! It is both raining and sunny out, Jill and Jack are wet/dry, and stitting at square/round tables!
This is a very silly way to run the scene, but definitely doable. It's presented here mostly as an example of all the outrageous things you can do when in a multiverse setting.

5) Make your own rules for how multiverses interact with their constituent universes, anything goes!
Ultimately what matters is writing an interesting scene with someone and enjoying yourself. If you want to make up your own serious or wacky rules for how universes interact then go ahead!

Hopefully this should solve a lot of people's questions about how the Multiverse works. If you question still hasn't been answered though, post it! I'll gather up the brain trust (e.g., me and anyone I can guilt into helping me) and we'll take a crack at it.
