Hm, would a magical Renaissance be more appropriate? If magic was new or unexplored, I find it improbable that a whole Academy would be assembled so quickly without any era of conflict or turmoil.
A Renaissance would explain a lot of things. Like the real-life Renaissance, old concepts and principles are brought back along with some new ones, thus explaining the diversity of types of magic and principalities. Ideas are constantly being synthesized and challenged, thus the lack of any dogmas to follow when dabbling with magic.
The only problem I see with a Renaissance is explaining the so-called "Dark Ages" of magic, where magic usage would be kept to a minimum...
