A childhood of awkward circumstances, two individuals wishing to force themselves closer to the other, but repelled by forces of envy and confusion. Their faces are similar and they match in an environment where they're anomalies, but with the differences in their families, and the envy spawning from his bitterness, his insecurity, they never get too close, always interrupted by lack of grace and bursts of ill emotions. It's left like this, with adults laughing to themselves, teasing because it appears to be a normal schoolyard crush. It's succeeded by silence, and they don't stand together until high school, when his birthday is remembered by her, when he replies to her gift with a similar piece of media - recommended. It becomes a back and forth until they're buddies bonded through stories, never opening up, but comfortable in the exploration of an evolving medium.

Blanket forts, Goosebumps novels, s'mores and whimsical adventures of tangible fantasy; as a child when an adult asked who is his best friend Daniel's answer was a proud and obdurate - 'Helena Webb'. When their collective group of friends dispersed in the late afternoons they remained stuck together like glue, troublemakers in their most glorious days snooping for clues and experimenting with scientific theories that collide with the supernatural underworld. It's a strong bond, fraying as they age, when their friends stop speaking and Daniel is sent to a different school. They are barely saved by the occasions where they exchange words, further bruised by secrets held within. In the present he considers her a friend, but the title had lost what made it strong and special, turning it tentative, to limited conversations and boundaries - to something ambiguous, not enough to satisfy either of them.

They were droplets in the same ocean, leaders and comrades, orchestrating quests and courses of action together in passionate tranquility. It was the same spitfire leaders that often argued with stubborn ferocity, transforming the ocean into a world of storms and tsunamis. There was affection between the two despite the lack of time spent isolated from the others for they were not the type to share secretes and weave friendship bracelets with one another, but even if their debates were vehement enough to silence the neighborhood they were allies standing side-by-side. Yet uniform with the others, they were destined to drift, and today they are suns with their respective solar systems, fixated on what orbits them, only giving one another glances of acknowledgment and short sentences, living as false-strangers between neutral and friendly.
