This thread is for all things related to the politics of the world of Skaerra.
Like a stranger on a grate, or a skylark, or a taper, flying ever upward and knowing of love's satiety. Our dreams beyond the Sun and into the expanse of Night doth sound a quiet hymn.

So let's talk politics.

The year is 3528 C.E.

Dessor

The southern parts of Dessor is controlled by the Empire of Dessor, which was established near the turn of the millennium in 2953. It is ruled by Emperor Pelion Loenthil of the Loenthil Dynasty, he shares power with the Senate, a conclave of (mostly Niessen) nobles. It wasn't until the 3200s that the Duuthesh began to appear in ever higher ranks of the Empire as its legions pushed further north and found federates among outlying Duuthesh enclaves.

It's not quite an Empire if one were to compare it to the domains held by the Sindrelei Kingdom at its height under High King Calnissel prior to its breakup. However, the Empire's political reach is nothing to be snide about, and its military is among one of the better trained, paid, and equipped. It is not the first human empire, and perhaps certainly not the last to be recorded in the history texts of Dessor.

However, slightly further north are a number of maritime city-states or city-kingdoms that have sought to remain independent of the Empire. Their prosperity, they believe, came from their extensive overseas trade networks with the cities of Syakh, not the aid or dominion of the Empire. They are content to have things remain the way they have been. The repeated aggressions of the Empire in the early 3510s prompted the establishment of alliance between the various cities that became known as the Northern Coalition.

To the west is what is known as Daellean, or the Elven Realm.

Within Daellean is a massive forestland, fitting for the tree lovers. It has long closed itself off from outsiders, with the exception of officials from other nations.

To outsiders there is a united front among the Sindrelei, Tlamani, and what few Duuthesh that still choose to remain within Daellean. However, within the Elven Realm are boundaries that mark off the realms of the Tlamani and the Sindrelei. When the dark elf prince Dahlkani Therithil split from his brothers, he led most of his followers out of Daellean to establish their own realm. What few remain, dwell within the domains of their elf brethren almost as second class citizens. It is often hard to tell where an Elven city ends, and the forest begins.

The Sindrelei Kingdom once dominated what is now known as Daellean, the Empire, the lands of the Coalition, and significantly more. Of course, the Sindrelei have since retreated, leaving behind various populations that chose to remain instead of retreat. However, unlike their Tlamani brethren, they remain nonetheless politically informed with the daily changes that undergo within the Empire.

The Sindrelei hail from a number of domains, but the largest of which are as follows.
Flyfendel ruled by King Oyenthius and his line.
Sidya ruled by Princess Fylena.
The Kalas Forests ruled by Lady Simrica.
Alheras ruled by Lord Ashoriel.

Together, the various Sindrelei realms form the Council of Flyfendel.

The Tlamani hail from one of three domains, the realm of Kes, ruled by Prince Thalasor. The second is the Nevreas Forests of Lord Neminel, and the third is the secluded forest heartland of Yhavann protected by Lord Ciranthas.

Syakh

The desert wastes of the continent of Syakh is a land of beauty and wonders as is almost any other land, thus one should say Syakh is a land of a certain beauty and certain wonders. It was once home to the Zengid Empire, the empire of the Zengi, a civilization of sun worshiping lizard people who bore a great resemblance to the ancient dragons. They ruled the dry lands and sands of Syakh without reprieve and they enslaved the D'homani humans living there. They ruled for nearly a millennia until an unexpected disaster struck and toppled their many cities. The centers of learning, trade, and culture, all vanished.

After the fall of the Zengid Empire in the early 800s, the D'homani began to rise amid the ashes. The Zengi disappeared altogether, but it was not until the 1400s that Tharonians began to appear. Some scholars have theorized that the Tharonians are the descendants of the ancient Zengi. Nevertheless the Tharonians no longer bear the empire building sensibilities of their ancestors. They have since become an itinerant race full of nomadic trading clans dwelling within a portion of the desert they call Tharon.

Humans, no matter where they come from, have always been prone to the passions of war as is their nature. This inevitably led to multiple dynastic wars that have destroyed many nation states that hoped to unify the sands. All that remains are a number of wealthy and self-sustaining cities on the coast and slightly further inland.

For the most part, the cities along the coasts are independent city states such as Asyral, Seirkent, Korm, or Khi'ir among others. Each is ruled differently. Asyral is ruled by Sultan Mirza Qaffi with a rather benevolent hand, but that is merely from the view of foreign dignitaries. Rumors from within say of Qaffi’s despotic rule and brutality. Khi'ir is ruled by the Sheikh Aziz Kartal, a man of opulence and eloquence. He is not without connections that link him through the vast deserts.

The strength of each city varies, Korm and Khi'ir rely on their commercial dominance as the many spice routes course through the deserts until they reach their ships which sail off to Dessor in the west or Jilel to the north. For this reason, Korm is led by the Trading Houses, or the major noble-merchant families.

Only recently have the cities of Syakh opened themselves up to the Empire and the Northern Coalition. Bitterness still lingers since the first of the Imperial Crusades of the early 3000s. Imperial forces under Emperor Uriel Loenthil led a number of nobles and lords with the purpose of subjugating Syakh in the name of faith. Erhan Pamuk, the Sheikh of Nabbuz, united the other cities to face the outsiders, one of only a few instances in the history of the land. The Crusades eventually culminated into the ill-fated events of the Disaster at Montare, where the Emperor was slain in battle. This led to the end of hostilities as well any more Imperial fleets to the shores of Syakh with conquest as their objective.

Relations between the Empire and the Syakh city states remained terse for a time. Since then, a period of detente has been reached as the leaders of the Empire recognize the mutual economic benefits of trade with the wealthy and spice rich cities of the desert continent.

Further inland, the rule of civilization begins to break down. Mystic forces continually shape the land and only the boldest of adventurers may witness these. It is only at the oases, once the center for many Zengid cities, that journeymen and adventurers will find refuge from the perils of the land.
