RANKS

Pack hierarchy is very important and nuances every interaction within werewolf society. Below are three important roles to understand. However, under the current rule of law pack organization is forbidden and all internal ranking and leadership is not recognized by the government; werewolves must defer to the same government authorities as humans and comply with all human law.

Alpha (al-fuh) - The highest authority in werewolf society. They have unequivocal power, almost like that of a medieval King, but unlike a king the title must first be earned and then maintained. Alphas normally come to power by overthrowing the previous one or forming their own pack. After becoming an Alpha, it is a balancing act to stay in that position; they must be respected and at the same time invoke just enough fear to deter challengers. Alphas make all the final decisions in matters concerning the welfare of the pack and are in charge of handling justice. Some Alphas are less hands on, letting the ranks below them sort themselves out and avoiding meddling in personal affairs unless they somehow affect the entire pack. On the other end of the spectrum there are Alphas who are micromanagers and will make it their business to know and decide who's in what position to even who mates with who to keep order. Either way, an Alpha must always be aware of all the happenings in his pack and be astute of any hierarchal changes beneath him to avoid having his power usurped or having any weaknesses in the chain exposed for outsiders to prey upon.

Beta (bey-tuh) - The second in command of a pack; They act as eyes, ears, and mouth piece of the Alpha and an extension of his authority whenever he is not present. They are treated with almost as much respect as the Alpha since anything they do is on his behalf and to question them is to question his judgement. While someone can become a Beta by overthrowing the previous, it is a position more about character than strength. The Alpha ultimately decides who their second in command is, so the Beta may not be the strongest in a pack. They may be a close friend of the Alpha or if the Alpha has a mate, the Alpha female might occupy this position. When an Alpha dies the Beta is next in line, but they may be dethroned quickly by someone stronger. If the Beta is a female she is not expected to fight and may yield immediately to the challenger.

Omega (oh-meg-uh) - The lowest caste in werewolf society. They are the ones who do the grunge work and must obey the whims of those above them. They are at times the pack whipping child, receiving punishment for seemingly anything whether it has to do with them or not. It is a position often occupied temporarily by the newest pack member or a newly turned wolf and is simply a hazing ritual one must go through to be accepted. However, it can also be a permanent position for some who are unable to fight their way out of it or are somehow outcasts of their pack such as invalids, mutts, or rule breakers. Packs do not always have omegas and some have completely done away with the position altogether considering it outdated and cruel.

LANGUAGE

These are day to day terms that werewolves use to describe relationships and race classification.

Sire (sahyuh r) & Progeny (proj-uh-nee)- The sire is a werewolf that has changed a human by bite and the progeny is the werewolf borne of that bite. A sire and their progeny hold an almost psychic connection to each other and is one of the strongest bonds two people can have. It is no surprise then that most sires and progeny are mated together and the change was made out of love to begin with. Most Alphas require their permission to turn a human because it is a liability upon the pack and a huge responsibility to train a werewolf that does not have control over his or her new instincts. Moreover for ethical reasons changing a human is a serious matter, as not all can survive the bite and the change that comes with it.

Mate (meyt)- A mate is closer to a husband and wife than boyfriend and girlfriend in human terms. In fact werewolves up until they mate do not have boyfriends or girlfriends, they simply have friends with benefits. Werewolves do not have strict rules on sex before mating, one can be with as many or few people as they please but once committed to a mate the relationship is absolutely exclusive. One wrong look at another man's mate is grounds for a fight and death is not considered too harsh a punishment for actually having an affair. (And females are just as susceptible to the same standard) However, males of higher rank can shirk the rules of monogamy and will assert their power by sleeping with whoever they wish.

Mutt (muht)- A derogatory term for a turned wolf. Turned werewolves do not have the full capabilities of a born werewolf; though still stronger and having more enhanced senses than humans they are not as as strong as other werewolves. This makes advancing in rank difficult but not impossible. There are not as many turned werewolves as one might think, since it's not guaranteed anyone bitten will become a werewolf, and they make around just ten percent of the werewolf population.

Mongrel (mong-gruh l) - A derogatory term for a person born of werewolf and human parents. The offspring of werewolf and human parentage are unable to reproduce and are born sterile. In capabilities they fall on the spectrum between a turned wolf and natural born wolf. Mongrels are generally outcasts in werewolf society and they have a difficult time advancing the ranks, since interbreeding between species is taboo. They make up only about 3-5% of the werewolf population, though it is hard to record exactly how many there are since many mixed children try to pass themselves as purely human or werewolf.

Natural Born- Someone who was born to two werewolf parents and has all the enhanced capabilities of their species.

SLANG

Informal speech mostly used by younger generations of werewolves.

Furry - A human obsessed with werewolves and werewolf culture; someone who wants to be in a relationship with a werewolf but not necessarily be one. More often than not these are human women who have a romanticized notion from literature and pop culture of being in a relationship with a male werewolf and/or have a kink.

Fluffy - Derogatory term for a gay male werewolf.

Bitch - Negatively refers to a female werewolf with a more deferent nature, especially to male authority, and also a less polite term for someone's mate. Females who try to please a male they are not mated to are often labeled a bitch for still being under male control. Unlike the human use of the term, it never refers to a hostile or catty woman.

Fido & Lassie - A werewolf obedient to human authority and holds up the status quo. Someone eager to please humans and tattle-tale. Generally Fido is used for males and Lassie for females although to add insult to injury Lassie might be used against a male.

Beast Out - To be so angry or emotionally out of control as to cause transformation into werewolf form.
