ISAAC FAWKES ||(1675?–1732?)

was an English conjurer and showman. The first record of Fawkes was an appearance by his son at Southwark Fair in 1722, but an advertisement of April of the same year boasted that he had performed for George II, so it is likely that he was well known in London before this time. He was one of the earliest magicians to present conjuring as an entertainment outside of the traditional fairground setting and by skillful promotion and management of his act he was able to amass both fame and a considerable fortune. While most historical experts would claim Fawkes was among the deceased in 1732, this was quite the contrary.

The Wizard had fled his native London, finding that some had caught on to the fact that is magic wasn’t just simply Muggle tricks and as such , he would later move to the Americas and leave his son to take up his name and continue his shows. As he traveled around the colonies, he would later come upon Remington boarding school, a small educational facility masquerading as any normal school, with disorganized leadership. He was perhaps the most talented wizard in the colony, and was given permission to teach the young students, using the knowledge and acumen he gained from his years at Hogwarts, he found the position to be quite fortunate, and would later take a few years to travel around the country and experience magics he had no prior knowledge of.

When he returned he would expand the school within the burgeoning Magical community. It would later be established as the first recognized magical school in the Americas as it grew in size and even tutored some of the more well known Wizards known to history. Fawkes served as the first headmaster over the Academy and would later pass his position over to who he considered to be another wizard or witch with enough skill to manage his school. To this day though, mysteries still surround his death, as he isolated himself within what was considered the last few months of his life, and there is no recorded date or exact year for his death.

MARIE LAVEAU || 1794 – 1881
was a Louisiana Creole practitioner of Voodoo renowned in New Orleans. (As for the date of her birth, while popular sources often say 1794, the records indicate 1801.) Her daughter, Marie Laveau II, (1827 — 1895) also practiced Voudoun, as well as Voodoo. She and her mother had great influence over their multiracial following. Very little is known with any certainty about the life of Marie Laveau. It is believed Laveau and her surviving daughter had the same name, her daughter being named Marie Laveau II. It is commonly believed that the mother was a dedicated practitioner of Voodoo while the daughter enjoyed being more theatrical in its use by holding public events (including inviting attendees to St. John's Eve rituals on Bayou St. John). They received varying amounts of financial support. It is not known which (if either) had done more to establish the voodoo queen reputation. Of Laveau's magical career, there is little that can be substantiated, including whether she had a snake she named Zombi after an African god, whether the occult part of her magic mixed Roman Catholic saints with African spirits, or whether her divinations were supported by a network of informants she developed while working as a hairdresser in prominent white households and in a brothel she ran. She appeared to excel at obtaining inside information on her wealthy patrons by instilling fear in their servants whom she either paid or cured of mysterious ailments.

While many disputed her later acquirement of the school, and her new role as Headmistress, there were some who doubted her ability to lead the Academy, and their ignorance of Voodoo led most to believe it was nothing but Dark Magic, meant to only harm. Leveau would prove them wrong, but her race seemed to blind others to the fact that she was indeed a proficient and fearsome Voodoo priestess. Whether or not she preformed evil spells to curse others, or if she used rituals to deceive others, she was undoubtedly the best this era could offer. She has a strict rule over the school, and actually shaped the school into one that any authority figure would find appropriate, even if others thought her to be too demanding. She also championed the struggle to allow other African American slaves the right to practice magic with their white peers, and as a result the school became the first to integrate both races because of her efforts. Surprisingly, near the end of her life, she would move back to her native Louisiana, and leave the school in the hands of some staff before another would come to take her place. On June 17, 1881, the New Orleans newspaper the Daily Picayune posted her obituary, which, according to Voodoo in New Orleans by Robert Tallant, announced that Marie Laveau had died peacefully in her home.

PROTUL CHANDRA SORCAR || (23 February 1913 – 6 January 1971)

Sorcar was born in a family of magicians of seven generations, Sorcar started off as a stage name for Protul Chandra Sorcar, a name destined to attain ranks of immortals later. He was born on February 23, 1913 in the small town of Tangail in Mymensing which now lies in Bangladesh. From the very childhood Sorcar found magic to be the passion of his life. His singular devotion soon brought its own honest reward. His unique feats of the newly cultivated art had soon won robust acclamation from the press and the public alike. He was hailed as one giving to the art of Indian magic a new cultural background which readily found a strong international appeal.

Sorcar would late be invited to Remington, to possibly educate others in his many advancements. While it was a position he would initially decline, he would later grow much more interested when he learned of the powerful wizard and witches that were trained by the Academy. He would usher in an interesting, and creative era in Remington’s history. Many remember Chandra for being an enthusiast for variety, breaking away from the rigidity of Laveau's curriculum's. He would open official positions for Magical Types, allowing a flurry of experts to educate his students. Those years at Remington were known to be somewhat turbulent but despite it all, Chandra led the school well, and would leave with the blessings of many students. His funeral was perhaps the first that any of Remington’s staff or alumni would attend.

ORENDA || (January, 28th, 1953 - ???)
Orenda was perhaps the most mysterious and elusive Headmaster of all, unlike the previous leaders, not much at all is known about Orenda, and her origins, but she became the first person to become Headmaster while also once being a student. From the mouth of Chandra himself, he choose her right after graduation to lead the Academy when she felt ready to do so. Her Leadership was a tranquil one, while the Academy already had high standards for admission, she seemed to flub those, and instead but her focus on potential graduates who seemed to hail from troublesome backgrounds.

It was clear to most people she seemed to harbor a large amount of raw magical power within her, and was a powerful Divinator. She seemed more eager to use her position to travel the world, and was often times missing from the Academy, and yet not many people seemed to have a problem with their elusive Dean. Her leadership of the Academy was rather short in comparison to her peers, and she seemed to lose interest in the position as soon as the Muggle-Magic War came along and changed the landscape of both the Wizarding and Muggle World. In the chaos of it all, she seemed to disappear from the public eye, though it seems impossible for her to be alive today, but no one is quite sure when or how she died. It is assumed she was apart of the casualties from the war, and in her honor, her name was granted towards the last House known to Remington.

NEW MAGICS

VOODOO

Voodoo has always been seen as Dark Magic because of how it’s power may sometimes rely on praying to deities, asking for power from a higher being tends to involve rather risky complications that are not always known. However, this is not always the case, as some deities will gladly relinquish some of their power to a devoted follower, or a passionate prayer. One does not necessarily have to believe in said Deities, and can easily stick to the more tangible elements of the magical study. This includes the brewing of poisons, the creation of charms, trinkets, and most anything that can be used to tempt the fates. Most Voodoo practitioners have a cherished item that they use for spells, different from a wand, in that it can be nearly anything, so long as the user imbues it with some of their magic. Voodoo tends to incorporate a large amount of time dedicated to meditation, to focus the spirit when performing rituals. These rituals also involve a level of creative or interpretive movements and speak that is practiced by students in order to cast successful incantations. The most important part of Voodoo is the ability to tie one’s soul to an object, not exactly the same as a Horcrux as the user is typically able to return said portion of soul back to the body with ease, but it can be used to empower even spells from other studies. They can also possess others with their spirit in a similar fashion to Shamanists but the means to do so tend to be incredibly difficult and should only be performed by those very skilled in Voodoo Arts. Every year, the school holds a Voodoo Queen and King in tandem with the Mundane tradition of Mardi Gras, something that takes place throughout the whole school and can be celebrated by anybody. Some say that week is when the tether between the living and the dead weakens, and as a result spells from Voodoo specialists and Shamanists tend to be stronger, and the Gods look down favorably to those who choose to contact them.

SHAMANISM

Where Voodoo may be seen as a Dark Art, Shamanism in comparison, seems to attract those with more benevolent means in mind, it contains the most advanced healing magic known to the Wizarding World, extending the process of healing beyond the physical. Shamans are known to have the ability to detach their spirits from their bodies and use it to communicate with others, or even possess lesser spirits like animals. Shamanists are messengers between the human world and the spirit world, as a Shamanist there also seems to be a peculiar talent with exploring the mind of others, much like one might do with a pensieve. A talented Shamanist can jump into the mind of others, or telepathically communicate with those they’re connected with, similiar to Occlumency and Legilimency, but far less subtle and more intrusive than both arts. Typically this art is made up of Seers, and Psychics who are able to interpret dreams and visions that pass through their mental barriers, they are also known to have rather strong protective spells. Users of this art often make the best conjurers, being able to conjure weapons from the energy of their spirits, while most of these weapons don’t do actual physical damage they can still prove lethal or at least incapacitating . Even Shamans can communicate with Gods, though they do not typically associate with the malevolent Gods often featured in Voodoo, and often use their positions to ask for blessings. Talented Shamans not only have the ability to cure serious injury, but also terminal ailments should their talents be needed, but like most skills one must train themselves for years to reach such a level of talent.

ORIENTAL MAGICS

Oriental Magic is a catch all term for magic commonly studied in the Eastern half of the world, as such it encompasses a large amount of different magics, although most of it is broken down into three sects. Elemental Magic, Hand-to-Hand Combat, and Necromancy. Most people who fall under this group, will more than likely start off using their wands to manipulate the elements in their basest forms, and as the years go on they abandon their wands to learn how to manipulate the elements with nothing but their bare hands. While one can easily stop there, some mix this with a side of hand-to-hand combat, all while manipulating the elements at the same time. Such magic takes a considerable amount of talent and control that not many have the patience or concentration for, and it may takes years to hone one’s magic to even perform at a competent level. There are perhaps less than two handful of actual masters of this craft, and one might say that this might be a significant weakness in comparison to other arts, but one might not understand is that it allows a leverage into Alchemy, and the transmutation of basic elements into other items, an example would be Fire to Lightning, or Water to Ice, one could even apply these properties to their bodies and use as weapon or a shield. It has a large amount of application that most are not aware of until you delve into the art. Separate from this, is the ancient art of Necromancy, an art that was forbidden for thousands of years before the Magic-Muggle World has now resurged with the freedom to use Dark Magic without being scrutinized. Necromancy shares properties with Voodoo and Shamanism, but the most important aspect is using the spirits and the dead as weapons against those who wish to do harm to the caster, although there is a catch, this magic tends to drain one’s magical core rather fast, as well as being rather harmful to the caster’s spirits. Remington does not offer an official course towards this art, but it does not impede upon those who wish to learn it for their own gain, but it is obvious to many that the art is looked down upon heavily.

MAGITECH

Magitech is the new burgeoning magical study from more tech saavy students, while purists will often disregard the art, because it tends to involve Mundane technology, it has proven to be rather useful in a world where technology has most definitely advanced. Imbuing magic into new technologies allows one to disrupt entire electrical grids, and manipulate the machinery inside to create something new. It is a mix of Alchemy and Transfiguration, as a user can imbue power within it to create new inventions, or to enhance the product itself. It also is mixed in with a bit of electrical manipulation, as users find their appendages much more charged than normal. While there is more to discover with the art, it is still fairly new, and chances are it won’t be accepted by a Wizard dominated society anytime soon

LYONHEARTH MANOR

    While perhaps not as large as most Wizarding schools, Lyonhearth manor is known to be one of the most cherished magical locations in the world, and as such it's exterior and interiors are well kept, and are just as new as the day the castle was used as the new location of the Academy. The furniture within seems to be teeming with magical energy imbued within and making sure the castle looks beguiling. Many would attest to the idea that the Manor looks as if a Pure Blood of great wealth should live within its halls, luckily, the Academy has avoided any attempts at acquisition and continues to astounding new students every year.

Image

GULF OF MAINE & THE CITY OF PORTLAND

    Beyond the castle exists the beautiful, yet treacherous Gulf of Maine, that seems to influence the weather more times than most people would like, the area of countryside around the Academy is often times drenched in rain, and such a thing has become so commonplace that most people stop noticing light drizzles that can often be accompanied with a seemingly clear day. The city of Portland is not too far from the Academy, and even then there are Floo Stations to separate parts of the city that would allow a young wizard to explore as they like so long as they return before curfew.

DORMITORIES, UNIFORMS & ETC...

    Dormitories in Remington are two bedroom suites, with two bathrooms and a small Den and kitchen for the two students within. Students are paired as same gender, and usually within the same year, although exceptions are always made since the Academy tends to accept more students than normal these days. Uniforms can vary wildly among students, although what is required is at least a collared button up shirt of some kind, and pants or skirts worn on either genders, and some article of colors that denotes their House colors, like a tie, or ascot, these items can be bought at the House's merchandise stores. Common Rooms do exist for each of the Houses, and they are not restricted on a members only basis, as most anyone can enter within a House Common Rooms as long as they are respectful of the House's rules and leave when curfew comes along (12:00pm).

    Students are sorted into Houses upon their second year of attendance, the first year is used to determine what House the student wishes to be sorted in. Every student enrolled in Remington is given a ring, this ring is at first completely blank, but it allows them to access many of the facilities inside the Academy as well as the Stations that bring students to the school. This ring also serves as the sorting system for the school, when a student returns for the first day of their second year the rings are magically emblazoned with the crest of one of the Houses within the school, and upon entering they can then move their possessions into their new House. This process is actually determined by the student’s own magic, and it is a careful deliberation. One can argue against the chosen House, but often times most acquiesce to what is chosen.

    The rings also allow students to access the only official mode of transportation to the school. The abandoned Chambers Street Subway Station in New York City. Since there is no real reason to covertly travel to Remington considering the fact that Mundanes know of their existence most students come to the Academy under normal means, although the train still continues on to this day if one is looking to travel in a traditional fashion.

    Finally there is the Union Pathway, a Street in Portland that is tailored towards the magical populace (think Diagon Alley just bigger and modern?? lol), this is where students come to buy their uniforms, books, and whatever else they might need, it is also the hangout spot for older students that exists outside the school come night.
