The passage of time

OOC: This is a side story off of Zechs Marquise's "Under the cover of Nevada" - http://gwing.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=155 for supporters of Millardo Peacecraft and in no way effects his actual actions. This is just the behind the scenes actions of supports from the shadows.

It had been nearly three years since Val had seen any type of actual action. The days had gone by slowly and meaninglessly. Repairs had been done, equipment had been replaced, and computer systems had been upgraded. But none of that really mattered until a few days ago.

Val walked alone down the dark deserted street. It was around midnight, but even time had stopped having a meaning for him. Only two lights shown on the small island, the light from the nearly full moon that was hanging over head, which allowed him to see where he was going, and the light from the cigarette which hung loosely from his lips. A slight fog covered the ground as he walked and the air smelled of decaying buildings and rusted Mech parts, but none of it mattered. Everything was pointless until they got an assignment, but that hadn't seemed like it going to happen. Zechs, Millardo as he was now called, seemed to be out of action and well, it was kind of hard for Val's now rag-tag group to do anything for someone that didn't have any apparent plan of action. That was until Millardo made his announcement. Effectively a call to arms, which was good news for Val and his cohorts. They had a purpose once again. Now all they needed to do was wait. That wasn't going to be a problem, they had been waiting for three years.

The silence of the night was suddenly broken by the crackle of the radio Val was carrying.

"Val are you there? This is James. We've run a complete system check on absolutely everything we have and everything is in the green. Over.

Good to hear James. Now all we can do is wait. Once Millardo makes his move, we'll make ours. Until then we do nothing, understand? Over.

Rodger that, Sir. I'll go ahead and make sure the rest of the group is up to date with the events. Over and out."

Val took one last drag of his cigarette and dropped the butt on the ground. After stepping on it he turned around and slowly started walking back towards the base.

Val spent a restless night in the base, it had only been a matter of days since Millardo's announcement, but everybody in The Khurah base, including Val himself, was beginning to get restless. Maybe waiting wasn't going to be the easy part this time.

Stepping outside, Val lite a cigarette and inhaled deeply. He turned to see James standing exiting the base behind him.

"I don't think we can wait much longer Sir. It's be one thing if it was just the men that were restless, but everyone can see that even you are."

"I know, spending three years waiting, believing nothing could happens is a lot easier than spending three days knowing something is going to happen, but not knowing when it will. Have the men do so training. I know they've been at it almost twenty-four seven since the announcement, but still, three years of nothing is a lot to shake of in only a few days."

"Yes, Sir. I'll set the up on the usual routine."

With that, James turned and went back into the base. Val waited until he heard the door click shut then let out a deep sigh. This wasn't easy on any of them. He could only imagine how Millardo must be feeling.

"He's probably not as stressed out as we are" Val said with a laugh.

Turning and re-entering the base, Val quickly and quietly entered, he really wasn't in the mood to deal with anyone or anything right now, so chances are, there was going to be a lot of things that needed to be delt with in one way or another. Sure enough, before the door was even closed, Val saw someone running towards him, clipboard in hand. Letting out a sigh and lowering his head Val knew he wasn't going to get out of this one.

"Sir, there's been a few new proposals that a bunch of them men believe to be a good idea. And well, we were wondering if you'd take a look at them and tell us what you think. Sir."

Val glanced down at his watch for no apparent reason, but tried to look as if he was in a hurry, then looked back up to man standing before him. Nodding slightly he took the clipboard, waved the man off and started walking down the long hall towards his office.

Originally it had been a storage room set just off the main drag of the bunker. Once the government took over and attempted to make a mobile suit factory here, the room had been converted to the head engineer’s office. Now, it belonged to Val. Many people thought he choose that office because it was near the heart of the bunker, but frankly, it was the furthest away from everywhere else. There were no windows and no ceiling light. A full sized standing lamp stood in the right corner of the room, by the entrance. The walls were covered in charts ranging from old MS factory Blue Prints to city layout plans for every city in the Sanc Kingdom. His desk wasn't fancy, expensive, or even that well put together. He was convinced that it was just going to crumble to dust one day. On the desk sat a computer, a small lamp, and seemingly endless piles of paper work, none that actually needed to be done though, most of that had been there three years ago when The Caligo Umbra officially disbanded.

Val sat down in the chair behind his desk and looked at the clipboard. He wasn't surprised to see the number one idea on the list was to get every member his or her own Mobile Suit. He let out a sigh and took a red pen and crossed that idea out. Not only did they not have the funding they used to, Val knew for a fact that sixty percent of the people here had never even seen a Mobile Suit, and of the remaining forty percent, thirty or so had never been in one. As for the rest, he doubted they'd have the skills necessary to battle, so there really wasn't any point.

The rest of the proposals were pretty much just as useless. Increased funding, 'That'd be nice, but were not funded by anyone anymore.' he thought. Expansion of base territory into other bunkers on the island, 'We don't have enough people for that, so again pointless'. One by one he went down the list and crossed out every idea until he came to the last one and almost crosses it off without even looking at it. It was an idea to expand the computer network to connect to the main server of the network of the MS Factory. They had recently they discovered the MS network was still up and running.

"If we can connect to that, our computer network would triple in power, at least. And, well, maybe we could get some of the old machines up and running again. They tried building a mass production factory, maybe it could be possible to assemble one at a time."

He smiled at the thought than shook his head.

"Better not start day dreaming, it'll only lead to disappointment."

With that he turned to his computer and started looking through files he had on the MS factory network.

After working for what seemed like several hours, going over every file that they had on the old MS factory network, Val shut down his computer and looked around with blurry eyes. What time was it? And exactly how long had he been looking over those files? Looking down at his watch he saw that it was 3:42 in the morning.

"You've got to be joking. There's no way I could have been looking over those........400 some odd files for that long. Didn't know we had that many. Well now I can see where the time went."

Getting up, Val stumbled to the door and shook his head violently to wake himself up a bit. Leaving the based he walked down the slight slope from the bunker and took a left when he reached the street. After about fifty feet, Val took the first right and walked down two houses and turned up the drive way of the third.

It was a massive three story house. The only one of the wealthy family houses to survive, but only because it was used to house visiting officers when the MS factory was up and running all those years ago. The house had been white at one point in time, but now most of the paint had chipped away or was stained some shade of brown or grey. The first floor windows had all been boarded up because Val and his bunkmate, James, had seen no real reason to have them fixed at the time, and never got around to it since. The double front doors had to be replace, but were nothing like the original elaborate doors. Now a single simple door was installed, where the second door had been they just boarded over. The first floor consisted of a massive entrance way with a room off to either side, which were now used for offices, one for Val, the other for James. Two sets of stair led up to the second floor, one on either side of the entrance hall, where there had originally been some sort of ball room, which now stood empty and unused, a bar, which was up and running again, as well the billiard room. Between the two stair cases stood the dining room and behind that the kitchen. The third floor consisted of the bed rooms, bath rooms and a few more empty rooms that Val and James couldn't find any use for, at least not at the moment.

Looking at the stairs, Val swore slightly under his breath and began to slowly climb up to the second floor. After what seemed like and eternity he reached the second floor and began climbing up the second flight, which sadly was larger than the first. One Val got to his room he collapsed face first on the bed and fell asleep instantly. There was no way he'd be completely functional in the morning.
