Where the Sidewalk Falls Abruptly Into Hell (Mo' demons!)

Well, ladies and jellyspoons, look who it is! Nannyhap, back with an Interest Check for a new RP. The one I'm running presently is plugging along at a delightfully leisurely pace, but I thought that perhaps something with a little more plot might attract some new folks. Now my lovely RhiannontheDane and I are cooking up something new, to appeal, we hope, to a wider audience.

So what is it we're cooking up for you lovely folks this time? Well, I'll give you a hint. It's a little more approachable than Hell, and a little less approachable than a dentist.

Still haven't got a clue?

Why, it's an apocalypse, of course! Sort of.

Now, before you say it—yes, I can hear you, going “Oh, Nan, not another apocalypse RP, there are so many! Zombies and trumpets and archangels and viruses oh my oh my oh my!—just hear me out. Because we're talking baby apocalypse here, and really, that isn't the fun part.

Okay, okay, maybe we'll humor you. What's the story, then, Nan?

I'm glad you asked that question, children! Gather 'round, and Nan will tell you the story of a little-big town besieged by demons, monsters, and, worst of all, card-carrying members of the FBI.

Image

The year is 1958. Our story begins in Philadelphia, but it is not the Philadelphia we know. The fascination with costumed superheros that dominated American media for years has, in this world, been replaced by a wary fascination with the occult. Comics and novels are published on the subject. Radio shows detail the hard work of fictional detectives whose unique skills and unorthodox areas of study help to keep the streets of US cities safe from an ever-growing Infernal threat. All of this media attention, fictional though it may be, leaves a nagging thought in the minds of its readers/listeners.

Demons walk among us, it seems to warn, and we need to be protected from them.

The unfortunate truth of the matter, though, is that this notion, which many pass off as an eerie remnant of an excellent story, could not be more correct.

Every year, tens of thousands of individuals encounter an incident with a demonic entity—and every year, several thousand of them die. These incidents do not go unnoticed. As a matter of fact, the government of the United States has taken measures to ensure the safety of its citizens against Infernal violence. From local police departments all the way up to the FBI, a handful of specially trained individuals all over the country are paving the way to security against a seemingly unkillable threat.

And as if this wasn't bad enough, it seems that demon attacks are on the rise, centering around a few square blocks of downtown Philadelphia that are slowly but surely becoming uninhabitable. The demons prowling the streets at night aren't the sort the occult specialists at the Philly PD are used to dealing with, either—these are young, wild demons, ripping the hearts out of their victims with no rhyme or reason.

To make matters even worse, now the FBI wants to get involved....

Coming Soon to an RP Tab Near You!

But Nan! How does the story end?

Well, that's the aim of the game, isn't it, kiddies? Survive to the end of the story, close up the hole in the Philadelphia underground where all the demons are leaking in, and hopefully prevent the end of the world in doing so. Not, we're assured, that the world would end if you failed. Not exactly. But...well, it's probably best if you don't ask questions about that, isn't it?

...Alright, I'll consider it. But I'm going to need some cool toys to play with, Nannerlady. What'll you give me?

I'm glad you asked that too! Along with the aforementioned story concept, I can promise you the following features:
  • FBI agents!
  • Wizards!
  • Detectives!
  • An excellent escape from the Doldrums of Summer!
  • A culturally rich AU wherein the 50s meets a dark fantasy realm from the depths of your nightmares (or, you know, not your nightmares, I dunno your life.)
  • Gratuitous violence!
  • An awesome group of roleplayers!
  • Very excited GMs who may or may not use too many exclamation points!
  • Communist demons!
  • Regular demons!
  • Grumpy police officers!
  • An open user-fueled wikiblog!
  • Too much detail!
  • Lots of lists!

So, what do you guys think? Would you tap dat RP?

I'm expecting to take a couple weeks or so, as my co-GM will probably be out of commission for a little while starting tomorrow. She's cautiously optimistic that she'll be functioning again by Friday, but pain medications being such that they are, I'm really not expecting too much from her until Wednesdayish. Wisdom teeth! They cause problems.

But I'm leaving this thread open as a discussion channel as much as an interest check, to keep you guys posted on when it looks like it'll be happening. At the moment, I'd say between two and three weeks of prep, but that may very well shrink down depending. That'll put it out just in time for everyone's brain to have thoroughly recovered from finals, though, and that's a desirable time slot if I ever did see one!

Except for the occult and the creatures, is there anything else different about that world?

We're basically taking the world we live in and making it high-magic. There are a lot of cultural differences--major religious leaders (and even some of the minor ones) are well aware of the demonic presence in the world, there are several historical events that are either altered or interpreted differently due to the prevalence of the occult, and then you've got the media aspect....it's mostly different in a thousand small, creaking, "someone please come oil this we've got demons!" ways.

Did you have something in particular in mind?

What about the cold war?

Re: Where the Sidewalk Falls Abruptly Into Hell (Mo' demons!

There's actually a wiki blog currently in the works to explain the sorts of demonic entities that will be available, and which is open to user contributions. I'm using the Hell that I've been working with in my other running roleplay, Snakes and Ladders, as a persistent setting, so the Wiki will be applicable to both, and any other roleplays that RhiannontheDane and I run in that setting. Currently I've got four out of ten descriptions completely finished, with at least one, possibly two, likely to be finished by the end of the evening.

As for the Cold War, it's still going on, but the way we're going about it is actually my co GM's brain-baby, so I'll wait for her to pop in and explain that for you. She's sitting three feet from me, I'm literally poking her about it as we speak, so there should be a response along shortly.

Hello! Co-GM here! The way I'm planning on going about this (and please note that it has been two years since I took US History, so my details on the fifties are slightly fuzzy) is that the Cold War is going on pretty much the same way it did in our world. Events such as the rebellion in Communist Hungary, the Suez Canal Crisis, Sputnik, etc. all happened as they did in our own 1950s.

The real difference lies in exactly what is causing tensions between America and the USSR: after a period of unrest following Josef Stalin's death in 1953, an openly demonic leader stepped forward to head the Communist party in 1955. At this moment in time we are choosing not to disclose the identity of this figurehead (please note that it may not necessarily be Nikita Khrushchev.) So! the Soviet Union is now being candidly run by Hell.

Understandably, the US finds this slightly unsettling.

The Red Scare, experiencing a flare up that is lasting well into the twilight years of the decade, then, is not only based on a hatred and fear of Communism, but of demons as well. Americans are terrified of demons (or Communists, or Communist demons) infiltrating the government and challenging all that they hold dear in the land of the Red, White, and Blue. If you're found to have Communist sympathies, you are not only a traitor to the US and all it symbolizes, but to humanity itself. Now, in this time of fear and uncertainty, America cannot afford to distinguish from belief in political ideology and belief that civilization should be crushed under Satan's boot-heels, in a manner of speaking.

As Senator Joseph McCarthy said*, "Today we are engaged in a final, all-out battle between communistic devil-worship and Christianity. The modern champions of communism have chosen their side, and ladies and gentlemen, the chips are down — they are truly down."

*obviously, this quote has been edited to suit our nefarious purposes

So these names in species description in your wikiblog are characters from your SnL roleplay or just random names?

Ones with links are characters that are currently in the roleplay, and clicking on them links to their profile. The names without links are either NPCs (anyone with Smith or Jones attached to their name is not gonna make a lengthy appearance, for example) or characters that are going to make an appearance, either in SaL or in this roleplay (which we are lovingly referring to as the 50s Quasipocalypse until a working title more effective than bad film noir adaptations can be found :P). They might seem a little bit random, but you can rest assured that each character mentioned is held dearly to his or her player's heart, and will be getting his or her own article shortly.

Once we finish the other zillion.

I did mention that we pay too much attention to detail, yeah? >.>;

Though, what we're really trying to do is make knowing all of the info largely optional, especially since many of the characters in this roleplay will be humans with only a very vague background in working with the occult.

I can assure you that Rhiannon and I are glad you did! Things are pretty slow goings at the moment, but Co-GM and I are having a pow-wow the night after next in order to get things moving faster. Once we've got some of the essential information for the people who are going to be playing demons or FBI and PPD members down on the Wikiblog, I think we're planning on counting everything else as supplemental information and at least sinking our teeth in on the introduction. It's not so much the planning that we're behind on as the writing. :P Ain't that just the way?

Well, ladies and gents, we're getting damn close to pressing the big red "GO" button on this roleplay. Although there are several things that will be added to the wiki after the roleplay is started, there are only two or three more articles/pages that Rhiannon and I consider essential. After that, everything added to the blog will serve the purpose of either incorporating user content or further enriching the world.

The Wiki itself is not a necessary read! All core information will be available in the Introduction part of the tab, and if a question comes up about something that is addressed on the Wiki, Rhiannon and I will direct you to the appropriate article and give you the most relevant explanation we can muster in regards to your question. You need not familiarize yourself with the whole of the Snakes and Ladders universe, although more power to you if you do.

Speaking of which, Kansiov, the blog has been getting a lot of hits from Singapore, which I can only assume is yourself. Rhiannon and I would both like you to know that we appreciate your thorough investigation of the blog! It makes our hearts happy.

Alright, kids, I'm headed back to work on my writeup of Infernal Magic, which should be finished within the next couple of hours if anyone is curious. You're all lovely!

Thank you, TheFinalOne, for your wellwishes. I'm on some antibiotics and feeling well enough to get back down to business today, and I can't make any promises, but I think Rhiannon may have plans to finish the Special Occult Branch article sometime soon.

And thank you, Modesty! ...I think I may still owe you a post from months ago. Finals sort of murdered me.

I should be up to scratch within the next few days, ladies and gents, which means powering forward on this project as quickly as we can once I am. If anyone's interested in getting a head start on a character, the suggested character sheet is available on the Wiki presently, though you are welcome to use any sheet so long as you provide the same information.

Peace out, dudes! I'm off to work on the tab!
