Write: Gateway's Pad System

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby DemiKara on Thu Jan 07, 2016 3:33 pm

There is a feature that you may not know of on this site. It’s probably the handiest feature I can think of for planning roleplays, storing character and roleplay ideas and formatting, and keeping things in one place. You can even invite a friend to join you there, and roleplay there as well.

This feature is write.roleplaygateway.com. Write is a real time, online document collaboration tool. Think of it like Microsoft word, but a word file anyone who you share the link with can see. It’s pretty easy to use to, so let me give you a quick run through!

Start out by going to the Write main page.

Where the text box is, you can see that I gave my pad a title. This is pretty important. Make certain to give yours a title you’ll remember, as anyone with that title can access that pad. Click okay, and you’ll get to see some pretty familiar options, with some preset text.

Most of the symbols there are probably familiar to you! You have the standard bold, italics, underline, along with a strikethrough option. You can make a numbered or bulleted list, or tab in or out for a paragraph. You can undo or redo what you’ve done.

That next symbol though may be a little weird. It’s a crossed out eye. By clicking the eye you clear any authorship colors from the pad. What do I mean by that? Well.

Every user gets a unique authorship color. By clicking the color next to their name in the userlist, a color wheel will appear, and a user of the pad can change their color. The user list of the pad is all the way over to the left, as the last button. Before that, there’s the import/export option, where you can choose to save all your work as another file type; the timeslider option, where you can see changes as they were made to the pad; the save revision button; where you can save a version of a pad so it can just be clicked too on the timeslider; a settings button, and an embed/share button.

The setting button is the only remotely complicated one, and it’s not all that complicated. For the check boxes, you can turn them on and off here. This allows you to make the chat always visible, or only visible when you click on it. It also allows you to have the user list and chat permanently up, to hide authorship colors, instead of clearing them entirely, to hide the line numbers to the lefthand side of the screen, and to change the orientation, language, and font of your document.

As for the chat I’ve mentioned a few times now, the automatic setting is that you have to click on it to make it viewable. Otherwise, it’s a small bar to the lower right hand side of your screen.

That’s about it for an introduction to Write! As for what you would use write for, I suggest for 1x1s, as a storage place for RP ideas you’re not ready for anyone to see yet, or even to plan out an RP with your co-GM or your friends. You could even store BBCode you’ve worked on here so you don’t lose it all, or write posts here so you don’t lose them if you accidentally click away or refresh.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It's been fashionable, for some time, to use various pads (Pirate, Think, Write, Gator... probably some others), but I'm glad there's something "official" with RPG's name in the URL. Makes it seem a little less hokey when you try to link someone to it.

And now there's no reason for anyone to make a storage RP.
Do you feel like you're a bad writer? PM me, and let's talk about it. :)
